54. Sustainable chemical reaction-free vacuum separation process to extract selenium from high-value-added hazardous selenium sludge

Abstract

High-value-added hazardous selenium sludge extracted from copper anode slime may cause serious selenium contamination and potential threats to human health if improperly treated. In this study, a sustainable chemical reaction-free vacuum separation process was used to extract selenium and recycle valuable metals from selenium sludge. The process comprises low-pressure dehydration and Se extraction by vacuum distillation. The laboratory-scale results indicate that 90.76% of selenium was extracted from volatiles at a purity of 98.68% under the optimum distillation conditions of 693 K, 90 min and 30–50 Pa. Ag and Au were enriched to 28004 g/t and 1226 g/t in residues from 2560 g/t and 112 g/t, respectively, in raw materials, representing increases of 10.4 and 10.25 times. On this basis, a low-pressure melting-vacuum distillation process and equipment with an annual selenium sludge disposal capacity of 500 metric tons were developed for industrial production. The continuous production data show that the purity of the extracted selenium always exceeded 98.0%, the direct yield ratio of selenium exceeded 96.5%, and the consumption was only 1150 kW h electricity per ton of selenium ingot output. Additionally, Ag and Au were enriched by over 11 times in the residue. The discharged water evaporated, and residues were returned to the comprehensive copper anode slime treatment process for the further valuable metal extraction. Compared with chemical processes, the proposed technology consumes fewer resources and reduces the environmental impacts, resulting in better economic and sustainability assessment results. The proposed process meets the demand for cleaner production within the selenium metallurgical industry.

67. Instant Visual Detection of Trinitrotoluene Particulates on Various Surfaces by Ratiometric Fluorescence of Dual-Emission Quantum Dots Hybrid

Abstract

To detect trace trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosives deposited on various surfaces instantly and on-site still remains a challenge for homeland security needs against terrorism. This work demonstrates a new concept and its utility for visual detection of TNT particulates on various package materials. The concept takes advantages of the superior fluorescent properties of quantum dots (QDs) for visual signal output via ratiometric fluorescence, the feasibility of surface grafting of QDs for chemical recognition of TNT, and the ease of operation of the fingerprint lifting technique. Two differently sized CdTe QDs emitting red and green fluorescences, respectively, have been hybridized by embedding the red-emitting one in silica nanoparticles and covalently linking the green-emitting one to the silica surface, respectively, to form a dual-emissive fluorescent hybrid nanoparticle. The fluorescence of red QDs in the silica nanoparticles stays constant, whereas the green QDs functionalized with polyamine can selectively bind TNT by the formation of Meisenheimer complex, leading to the green fluorescence quenching due to resonance energy transfer. The variations of the two fluorescence intensity ratios display continuous color changes from yellow-green to red upon exposure to different amounts of TNT. By immobilization of the probes on a piece of filter paper, a fingerprint lifting technique has been innovated to visualize trace TNT particulates on various surfaces by the appearance of a different color against a yellow-green background under a UV lamp. This method shows high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit as low as 5 ng/mm2on a manila envelope and the attribute of being seen with the naked eye.

68. Real-Time Visualization of Cysteine Metabolism in Living Cells with Ratiometric Fluorescence Probes

Abstract

Sulfite from cysteine metabolism in living cells plays a crucial role in improving the water solubility of metabolic xenobiotics for their easier excretion in urine or bile. However, an imbalance of sulfite in vivowould lead to oxidative stress or age-related diseases, and an effective strategy for real-time imaging of cysteine metabolism in living cells is still lacking due to its low metabolite concentration and rapid reaction kinetics. Herein, a cyanine moiety based ratiometric fluorescence probe was developed for highly selective and sensitive detection of sulfite in aqueous solution and living cells. The free probe exhibited an orange emission color, and the fluorescence color would gradually change to blue once sulfite anions selectively reacted with the unsaturated carbon double bonds in the probe molecule. This ratiometric fluorescence manner endowed the probe excellent sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.78 nM, which was then explored to image the kinetic process of sulfite release in hepatic BRL cells after incubating with an excess amount of cysteine. This strategy opens new opportunities for revealing thiol-containing species metabolism and even quantitatively tracking their distributions in live cells or organelles.

73. Rapid and On-Site Detection of Uranyl Ions via Ratiometric Fluorescence Signals Based on a Smartphone Platform

Abstract

Fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) of carbon and semiconductors have superior optical properties and show great potential in sensing applications. This paper reports a novel method for rapid detection of uranyl ions via ratiometric fluorescence signals by employing two types of QDs as the key materials. As the most soluble and stable toxic uranium species, uranyl has been recognized as an important index for nuclear industrial wastewater. However, its on-site, rapid, and sensitive determination remains challenging. This work uses the ratiometric fluorescent signal of QDs and combines a smartphone-based handheld device for on-site and rapid detection of uranyl. The ratiometric fluorescent probe is achieved by integrating carbon dots (C-dots) and CdTe QDs (MPA@CdTe QDs) through chemical hybridization. The presence of uranyl ions greatly quenches the red fluorescence of the CdTe QDs, whereas the green fluorescence keeps constant, leading to an obvious color change. An app and a 3D-printed accessory have been developed on a smartphone to analyze and calculate the content of uranyl on the basis of captured fluorescence signals from a test strip with an immobilized probe. This new designed mobile detection system displays good analytical performance for uranyl ions in a wide concentration range of 1 to 150 μM, which shows a great potential application in controlling the nuclear industrial pollution.

Abstract

In the era of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), sensors have become an integral part of intelligent systems. Although the traditional sensing technology is very mature in long‐term development, there are remaining defects and limitations that make it difficult to meet the growing demands of current applications, such as high‐sensitivity detection and self‐supplied sensing. As a new type of sensor, array triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG)‐based tactile sensors can respond to wide dynamic range of mechanical stimuli in the surrounding environment and converting them into quantifiable electrical signals, thus realizing real‐time self‐supplied tactile sensing. The array structure allows for fine delineation of the sensing area and improved spatial resolution, resulting in accurate localization and quantification of the detected tactile signals, and have been widely used in wearable devices, smart interaction, medical and health detection, and other fields. In this paper, the latest research progress of functional tactile sensors based on arrayed triboelectric nanogenerators is systematically reviewed from the aspects of working mechanism, material selection, material processing, structural design, functional integration, and application. Finally, the challenges faced by arrayed triboelectric tactile sensors are summarized with a view to providing inspiration and guidance for the future development of tactile sensors. Abstract

Spatial and temporal precisely control of direction and speed is crucial for nanomotors to enable complex operations and applications in microsurgery, drug delivery, isolation of biological targets, and so on. Judicious material design involving Janus nanoparticles has been popular over the past decades, however, precise and customizable modulation of Janus structure with a specific asymmetric ratio for motion control is still challenging. In this study, a universal “interface allocation” strategy is developed for efficient and controllable preparation of Janus mesoporous silica‐coated upconversion nanoparticles (Janus UCNP@mSiO2) with precisely tuned asymmetric ratio to achieve near‐infrared (NIR)‐controlled active mobility for relieving vessel plaque. Mesoporous silica with a thickness of 50 nm is precisely coated onto the nanoparticles’ surface with an optimal coverage ratio of 50% to encapsulate gas propellant. Upon exposure to upconverted blue light, the nanomotors release nitric oxide, facilitating their motion and pathologically improving atherosclerosis through endothelium‐dependent vasodilation. Experimental and theoretical simulation results demonstrate the advantages of NIR‐controlled Janus upconversion nanomotors in atherosclerosis treatment, including enhanced nanoparticle‐transmittance rate (34.83% to 85.57%) and excellent in vivo therapeutic efficacy. 90. Upconverting Ultra-Thin Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 Nanosheets for Synergistic Photodynamic Therapy and Radiotherapy.

Abstract

Synergistic therapy has become the major therapeutic method for malignant tumors in clinical. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and radiotherapy (RT) always combine together because of their identical anti-tumor mechanisms, that is reactive oxygen species are generated by the use of radiosensitizers after irradiation by X-ray to efficiently kill cancer cells, PDT also follows similar mechanism. Full exposure of energy-absorbing species in nanomaterials to X-ray or near-infrared light irradiation makes the energy interchange between nanomaterials and surrounding H 2 O or dissolved oxygen easier, however, it remains challenging. Herein, an ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet (NS) is developed, Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 , doped with lanthanide ions to give out upconversion luminescence, where the high Z elements Bi, Yb, and Er promote the radio-sensitizing effect. To the surprise, lanthanide activator ions gave out completely different luminescence properties compared with traditional upconversion nanoparticles. Less dopant of Er ions in nanosheets lattice resulted in brighter red emission, which provides more efficient PDT. Under RT/PDT combined treatment, NS shows a good tumor growth-inhibiting effect. In addition, synergistic therapy requires lower radiation dose than conventional radiotherapy and lower light power than single photodynamic therapy, thus greatly reducing radiation damage caused by RT and thermal damage caused by PDT., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Abstract

We have devised a facile and general methodology for the synthesis of various molecularly imprinted shells at the surface of polystyrene (PS) colloidal spheres to recognize the explosive compound 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). PS spheres with surface-functionalized carboxyl-group layers could direct a selective imprinting polymerization on their surface through the hydrogen-bonding interactions between surface carboxyl groups and amino monomers. Meanwhile, homogeneous polymerization in the solution phase was completely prevented by stepwise polymerization. The overall process led to the formation of monodisperse molecularly imprinted core-shell microspheres, and was very successful in the preparation of organic polymer and inorganic xerogel shells. Furthermore, greater capacity and faster binding kinetics towards target species were achieved, because surface-imprinted sites ensured the complete removal of templates, good accessibility to target molecules, and low mass-transfer resistance. The results reported herein, concerning the production of high-quality molecularly imprinted products, could also form the basis for the formulation of a new strategy for the fabrication of various functional coating layers on colloidal spheres with potential applications in the fields of separations and chemical sensing., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
