Abstract

We demonstrate a high-speed optical switch based on a generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a hybrid configuration consisting of a silica-based planar lightwave circuit and lithium niobate phase shifters. The novel switch demonstrated here has one input and four output ports and a switching time of less than 0.1 mus, thanks to the fast response of the electrooptic phase shifters on the LN chip. The insertion loss and extinction ratio of the switch are 4.2 dB and more than 17 dB, respectively [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

We review our recent progress toward 100 Gbps and beyond, focusing on integrated optical devices. Topics include our recently developed integrated optical front-ends for 100 Gbps PDM-QPSK based on multi-channel micro collimator optics and hermetically sealed O/E converters, and PLC-LiNbO3 hybrid optical modulators for 100 Gbps PDM-QPSK. We also describe our recent work on exceeding 100 Gbps, including 64 QAM modulators, modulation-level-selectable modulators, and high-speed digital-analog converter ICs for future multi-level transmissions.

Abstract

We present a power-efficient and reduced-complexity all-optical approach to generate high-bit rate superchannels, based on joint time-frequency multiplexing. Both optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and Nyquist-optical time division multiplexing (N-OTDM) signals are generated and processed using a wavelength-selective switch (WSS). We use the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) to introduce the largest degree of flexibility in optical networking, and we experimentally demonstrate that the transmitted signal can be received either in parallel, as OFDM subcarriers, or in series, as an N-OTDM signal. Compared to conventional optical OFDM, we achieve peak to average power ratio (PAPR) reduction; compared to N-OTDM, we introduce flexible chromatic dispersion (CD) management. We successfully demonstrate a field trial experiment of 4-channel 40 Gb/s hybrid OFDM/N-OTDM transmission over the 89.2-km Japan gigabit network-extreme (JGN X) test bed, with 1 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency.

Abstract

We verified the insertion effect of a cyclic prefix (CP) in an all-optical fractional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (FrOFDM) system. CP is an essential technique for reducing inter-channel interference in conventional OFDM. Because a FrOFDM signal is generated by a fractional Fourier transform, which is a generalization of the Fourier transform, a CP is also effective for a FrOFDM signal. The measured bit error rate of a 4×10 Gbit/s DBPSK all-optical FrOFDM system showed that the CP improves the signal quality even if the performance of the time gate is insufficient.
