This paper examines the competing claims on land use resulting from the expansion of biofuel production. Sugarcane for biofuel drives agrarian change in So Paulo state, which has become the major ethanol-producing region in Brazil. We analyse how the expansion of sugarcane-based ethanol in So Paulo state has impacted dairy and beef production. Historical changes in land use, production technologies, and product and land prices are described, as well as how these are linked to changing policies in Brazil. We argue that sugarcane/biofuel expansion should be understood in the context of the dynamics of other agricultural sectors and the long-term national political economy rather than as solely due to recent global demand for biofuel. This argument is based on a meticulous analysis of changes in three important sectors - sugarcane, dairy farming, and beef production - and the mutual interactions between these sectors.

Investigation of the aetiology of viral meningitis in Brazil is most often restricted to cases that occur in the Southern and Southeastern Regions; therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe the viral meningitis cases that occurred in state of Pará, Northern Brazil, from January 2005-December 2006. The detection of enterovirus (EV) in cerebrospinal fluid was performed using cell culture techniques, RT-PCR, nested PCR and nucleotide sequencing. The ages of the 91 patients ranged from < one year old to > 60 years old (median age 15.90 years). Fever (87.1%), headache (77.0%), vomiting (61.5%) and stiffness (61.5%) were the most frequent symptoms. Of 91 samples analyzed, 18 (19.8%) were positive for EV. Twelve were detected only by RT- PCR followed by nested PCR, whereas six were found by both cell culture and RT-PCR. From the last group, five were sequenced and classified as echovirus 30 (Echo 30). Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Echo 30 detected in Northern Brazil clustered within a unique group with a bootstrap value of 100% and could constitute a new subgroup (4c) according to the phylogenetic tree described by Oberste et al. (1999). This study described the first molecular characterization of Echo 30 in Brazil and this will certainly contribute to future molecular analyses involving strains detected in other regions of Brazil.

Objective: To evaluate, by means of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ), the quality of life of ulcerative colitis patients submitted to proctocolectomy with sphincter preservation using J-pouch reconstruction over ten years ago., Methods: The study consisted of 36 patients interviewed using the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire. The score scale, resulting from the addition of each answer, ranged from 32 to 224, where the highest score indicates the best quality of life. The chi square test was used to verify the existence of meaningful differences between the results of the questionnaire and age, and gender proportion. For each section, as well as for all of them combined, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to verify if there were differences in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire scores among the groups in relation to the proportions., Results: After applying the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, it was determined that quality of life was considered excellent for 9 (25%), good for 11 (30.6%), regular for 13 (36.1%), and bad for 3 (8.3%) patients. In our study, we determined that 85% of the patients were pleased with and thankful for the surgery that they underwent., Conclusion: We can conclude that the possibility of sphincter preservation should always be taken into account, since patients remain clinically stable and have a high quality of life even after long periods.

Mucorales were isolated from maize flour, corn meal and cooked cornflakes using surface and depth plate methods. Rhizopus oryzae, Circinella muscae, Mucor subtilissimus, Mucor hiemalis f. hiemalis, Syncephalastrum racemosum, Rhizopus microsporus var. chinensis and Absidia cylindrospora showed protease activity.

Background: Ever since the first total gastrectomy, there has always been a great concern in increasing the survival of patients, and with the advance of techniques, in improving the quality of life of these patients. The most common reconstruction technique of the gastrointestinal transit is the Roux-en-Y. The reposition of a functional pouch in place of the resected stomach was proposed to minimize the postprandial symptoms, improve the nutritional grade and consequently, the quality of life. The Safatle reconstruction of the gastrointestinal transit technique consists of, in short, in the association of the interposition of the jejunal loop with partial transit through the duodenum, with an inverted Roux-en-Y and with the creation of a pouch which resembles the dynamics of the stomach, achieved by duodenojejunal segment which has an antiperistalsis emptying., Aim: To assess, by radiographic means, the emptying of the duodenojejunal pouch in patients submitted to total gastrectomy using the Safatle reconstruction technique., Method: Twelve patients submitted to total gastrectomy using the Safatle technique due to gastric cancer were studied. They were summoned to perform contrasted radiographies of the esophagus-duodenum-jejunum by the videofluoroscopic method during the months of July and August, 2005., Results: All the patients presented satisfactory movement of the duodenojejunal pouch and an adequate emptying in antiperistalsis without food stasis. There has been an average 25-minute drainage time of the duodenojejunal pouch., Conclusion: The duodenojejunal pouch, in the patients submitted to total gastrectomy using the Safatle reconstruction, presented adequate emptying and movement.

Background: Inguinal hernia is the second most common surgical case in our field. The anatomical factors alone are not enough to explain the inguinal hernia. Studies show changes in the proportion and quantity of collagen fibers in the developing of inguinal hernia. The greater production of collagen type III compared to the type I could justify the thinning of the fascia transversalis and its weakness., Aim: To determine the quantitative and qualitative changes of collagen in the fascia transversalis in inguinal hernia patients and compare them to findings from corpses without inguinal hernia., Method: Prospective case-control study based on the biopsy of fascia transversalis of 27 patients and 24 corpses. The technique used was hematoxylin-eosin and picrosirius colorimetry., Results: The medium percent area of collagen (types I + III) and collagen type I, in both groups, show no statistic difference. The quantity of collagen type III was greater in the patients. Patients classified with Nyhus IIIa presented greater quantity of collagen type III., Conclusion: There is no significant difference in the quantity of collagen in the fascia transversalis of patients compared to the controls. An increase in the quantity of collagen type III was found in patients with inguinal hernia and a greater quantity in those patients classified with Nyhus IIIa.

Human astroviruses (HAstV) have been increasingly identified as important etiological agents of acute gastroenteritis in children up to five years old. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and genotype diversity of HAstV in children with symptomatic and asymptomatic infections in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. From June 1997 to July 1999 a total of 183 fecal samples 84 from symptomatic and 99 from asymptomatic children were tested by enzyme immunoassay for HAstV. Prevalence rates were found to be 11 and 3% for symptomatic and asymptomatic children, respectively. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was carried out in 46 specimens (26 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic) including the 12 samples that were positive by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The overall positivity yielded by both methods was 8% (15/184); of these, 11% (9/84) for symptomatic and 5% (5/99) for those without symptoms or signs. Sequence analysis of amplicons revealed that HAstV-1 genotype was the most prevalent, accounting for 60% of isolates. Genotypes 2, 3, 4, and 5 were also detected, as one single isolate (10%) for each type. Variations in the sequences were observed when Brazilian isolates were compared to prototype strains identified in the United Kingdom. No seasonal pattern of occurrence was observed during these two years of study, and peak detection rate was observed in children aged between 3 and 6 months in the symptomatic group, and between 18 and 24 months in the controls.

[reaction: see text] A simple and efficient protocol for the preparation of functionalized styrenes is disclosed that employs the palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of arylboronic acids with vinyl bromide, generated in situ from 1,2-dibromoethane. The reaction is carried out under mild reaction conditions. Compared with the cross-coupling reactions usually employed to obtain vinylarenes, this protocol is very simple, overcomes the inconvenience of using of ethylene under pressure, and uses air-stable and widely available arylboronic acids instead of vinyl organometallic reagents.

The first case of AIDS due to occupational exposure in Brazil is described. The accident occurred in 1994 and the health care worker was classified as AIDS-positive with unidentified risk in 1997. The correct classification as occupational exposure occurred after an epidemiological investigation conducted in 1999.

NiCl(2)(PCy(3))(2) associated with PCy(3) promotes the selective cross-coupling of aryltosylates with arylboronic acids under relatively mild reaction conditions, and a variety of functional groups are tolerated in both arenes. [reaction: see text] Cyclopalladated compounds derived from the ortho-metalation of benzylic tert-butyl thioethers are excellent catalyst precursors for the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of aryl bromides and chlorides with phenylboronic acid under mild reaction conditions. A broad range of substrates and functional groups are tolerated in this protocol, and highly catalytic activity is attained.

The reaction can be performed with aryl lodides, bromides, and chlorides, with acrylic esters and styrene, leading to turnover numbers up to 1,850,000.
