51. Evaluating the reliability of a microperimetry-based method for assessing visual function in the junctional zone of geographic atrophy lesions.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the repeatability of a microperimetry methodology for quantifying visual function changes in the junctional zone of eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) in the clinical trial context. Methods: A post hoc analysis of the OAKS phase III trial was conducted, which enrolled patients with GA secondary to age-related macular degeneration. Microperimetry using a standard 10 − 2 fovea centered grid was performed at baseline and follow-up visits. GA regions were traced on fundus autofluorescence (FAF) images. Two graders independently registered baseline microperimetry images with baseline FAF images in a sampling of 30 eyes from the OAKS study. Agreement between the two graders' assessments of mean sensitivity and the number of scotomatous points within a ± 250 휇m GA junctional zone was assessed. Results: The intraclass correlation (ICC) and coefficient of repeatability (CoR) for the mean junctional zone sensitivity were 0.987 and 0.214 dB, respectively. The ICC and CoR for the total number of scotomatous points within the junctional zone were 0.991 and 1.42, respectively. Conclusions: The repeatability of the methodology and its compatibility with standard MP acquisitions appear to make it well-suited for identifying and analyzing retinal sensitivity within high-risk areas of the retina. Summary: We present a microperimetry-based methodology for assessing visual function changes in the junctional zone of geographic atrophy lesions using a standard 10 − 2 fovea centered grid in a clinical trial context. Abstract

Estimating the long-run variance (LRV) is crucial for several econometric issues. Constructing reliable heteroskedasticity autocorrelation consistent (HAC) variance-covariance matrices and implementing efficient generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation procedures require a consistent LRV estimate. A good VARHAC estimator (HAC matrix with the spectral density at frequency zero constructed using a VAR spectral estimation) requires accurately estimating the sum of autoregressive (AR) coefficients; however, a criterion that minimizes the innovation variance does not necessarily yield the best spectral estimate. This article implements an optimal VARHAC estimator using an alternative information criterion, considering the bias in the sum of the parameters for the AR estimator of the spectral density at frequency zero. Abstract

In our proposal, we aim to present some findings from a research study that has been conducted on the urban periphery of Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, since 2020, with a specific social group recognized as "pepenadores" or "waste pickers." These individuals perform an important role in the city, being part of the urban cleaning processes that are closely related to the management of solid waste, including garbage, and are in direct contact with the collection routes and the city's landfill. Our goal is to highlight the occupational culture of this social group and to present some of the fieldwork findings related to the motivations and circumstances that lead families, sometimes involving more than one generation, to dedicate their lives to waste picking. At the same time, we employ a category we call the plecostomus effect, given the similarities between the work of the waste pickers and this fish native to South America., Em nossa proposta, buscamos apresentar alguns achados de uma pesquisa que vem sendo realizada na periferia urbana de Tepic, Nayarit, México, desde 2020, com um grupo social específico reconhecido como “pepenadores” ou “catadores de lixo”. Essas pessoas desempenham um papel importante na cidade, sendo parte dos processos de limpeza urbana que estão estreitamente relacionados ao manejo de resíduos sólidos, incluindo o lixo, e estão em contato direto com as rotas de coleta e o lixão da cidade. Nosso objetivo é destacar a cultura ocupacional desse grupo social e mostrar alguns dos achados do trabalho de campo, que estão relacionados às motivações e circunstâncias que levam as famílias, às vezes envolvendo mais de uma geração, a dedicar suas vidas ao trabalho de catadores de lixo. Ao mesmo tempo, utilizamos uma categoria que denominamos efeito plecostomus, dadas as semelhanças entre o trabalho dos catadores e este peixe originário da América do Sul., En nuestra propuesta tratamos de mostrar algunos hallazgos de una investigación que se ha venido realizando en la periferia urbana de Tepic, Nayarit, México, desde el año 2020, con un grupo social específico reconocido como “pepenadores” o “basureros”. Estas personas cumplen una labor importante en la ciudad, al ser parte de los procesos de limpieza urbana, que están en estrecha relación con el manejo de los residuos sólidos, incluida la basura, y que se encuentran en contacto directo con las rutas de recolección y el vertedero de la ciudad. Lo que pretendemos es dar cuenta de la cultura ocupacional de este grupo social y mostrar algunos de los hallazgos del trabajo de campo, los cuales van relacionados con las motivaciones y circunstancias que llevan a las familias, en algunos casos involucrando a más de una generación, a dedicar su vida al trabajo de pepenadores de basura. Al mismo tiempo, hacemos uso de una categoría que denominamos el efecto plecostomus, dadas las semejanzas entre la labor de los pepenadores y este pez originario de Sudamérica.
