Abstract

We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in a gaseous target, made of a H2/O2 mixture, exposed to a muon beam. This work sets constraints on theoretical models of muon transfer and is of fundamental importance for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen ground state as proposed by the FAMU collaboration.

Abstract

La gestión pública en América Latina enfrenta el reto del desarrollo social. Las múltiples dificultades y complejidades de la región la convierten en la más desigual del mundo. De este modo, la toma de decisiones estratégicas funge como una herramienta que posibilita la elaboración de políticas públicas eficaces ante este escenario. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar la toma de decisiones estratégicas en la gestión pública de cara al desarrollo social. Se realizó una investigación documental de distintas fuentes bibliográficas. Se concluye que la toma de decisiones estratégicas permite la construcción de planes de acción eficientes de cara a la comprensión de las necesidades de la población y la elaboración de políticas públicas capaces de superar los males administrativos y de cobertura que atañen a la región. El alcance del desarrollo social requiere la comunión entre Estado, organizaciones sociales y sector privado.

Abstract

Resumen Introducción: Las metástasis cervicales con primario oculto representan el 5% de los tumores de cabeza y cuello. Su diagnóstico y tratamiento han sufrido modificaciones con los años según las diferentes investigaciones, con vistas a mayores tasas de supervivencia. Objetivo: Determinar la supervivencia global y según diferentes variables. Material y Método: Investigación retrospectiva, descriptiva y longitudinal de 96 pacientes diagnosticados en el Instituto Nacional de Oncología y Radiobiología (INOR) en el periodo 2007-2012, manteniéndose el seguimiento hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2017. Resultados: De los pacientes estudiados, 65 eran hombres (67,7%) y 31 mujeres (32,3%), para una razón de 2,1:1, con una media de edad de 61,4 años. El tabaquismo estuvo presente en el 64,6% de la población. El nivel ganglionar más afectado fue el II y 41 pacientes (42,7%) presentaron una enfermedad N1 al diagnóstico. En 42 pacientes (43,8%) estuvo presente el grado histológico poco diferenciado. Al 70,9% se les practicó cirugía con adyuvancia o sin ella y el 86,5% tuvo respuesta completa. El tumor primario apareció en el 13,5% de los casos, más frecuente en amígdala. La supervivencia global a los 5 años fue del 74% y resultaron variables determinantes de supervivencia el estado ganglionar y la extensión extraganglionar. Los resultados coinciden con la literatura revisada. Conclusión: La supervivencia global a los 5 años de los pacientes con metástasis cervical de primario oculto es elevada, tiene tendencia a mejorar con el paso de los años y está determinada por el estado ganglionar y la extensión extracapsular de forma inversamente proporcional.

Abstract

La cuarta revolución industrial está generando aceleradas transformaciones en las distintas esferas de la sociedad. El mundo contemporáneo se encuentra marcado por los avances tecnológicos en materia de integración del mundo físico con el mundo digital y virtual. En estos nuevos escenarios, las organizaciones deben reflexionar en torno a la capacidad de su talento humano de cara a los nuevos retos y desafíos que las sociedades imponen. El objetivo de este trabajo es caracterizar el talento humano en el contexto de la cuarta revolución industrial. La investigación corresponde a una revisión teórica documental y/o bibliográfica. Los resultados arrojaron que las organizaciones deben promover la captación de talentos multidisciplinarios con adaptabilidad ante las innovaciones que surgirán a lo largo de este siglo. Se concluye que las organizaciones contarán con tecnologías que reemplacen labores humanas automatizadas, así como, con talento humano fortalecido en sus capacidades gracias a las herramientas tecnológicas.

57. Phase advance constraint in $K$ modulation for precise $\beta$-function determination

Abstract

A precise determination of the β function at different locations of an accelerator is essential to allow accurate optics correction and to ensure high machine performance. The β function can only be measured directly at locations where beam position monitors are installed. For other locations, we rely on a K-modulation technique. However, this technique presents some limitations resulting in imprecise β values when the phase advance between the modulated quadrupole and the observation point is separated by 90°. To mitigate these limitations, we have introduced the same phase advance as an additional constraint in the K-modulation algorithm. In this paper, the improvement of the β measurement uncertainty is quantified for different optics configurations for both, the LHC and the proton synchrotron (PS) booster. The new algorithm is used to reanalyze measured data during van der Meer scans for luminosity calibration providing significantly more accurate results than obtained previously. Moreover, in the PS booster, this improvement has also reduced the uncertainty of the β function at different locations of the machine.

Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the acute and subacute toxicity of the injectable alpha compound to Hsd Han: WIST rats. For the acute toxicity assessment, rats were inoculated with doses of 2 000, 1 000, 500, 100, or 10 mg/kg alpha compound intramuscularly. The results of histopathological analysis did not show apparent changes with the doses used. Notably, 2 animals died after treatment with the 2 000 mg/kg dose, and one animal died in the 1 000 mg/kg group. In the subacute toxicity study, neither male nor female rats inoculated with repeated doses of 8, 24, and 40 mg/kg alpha compound showed significant changes in percent body weight (P = 0.5930). Among the females, significant differences were observed for the serum biochemical parameters glucose and cholesterol in the group inoculated with 8 mg/kg compared to the control. The hematocrit values in the 8, 24 and 40 mg/kg groups and the platelet count in the 24 mg/kg group were significantly different (P = 0.0110) among the females compared to the control group. For the male rats, significant differences were found in erythrocyte count and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in the groups treated with 8 and 40 mg/kg. However, these values are normal according to the literature. The histopathological evaluations did not show apparent changes, so it is concluded that the alpha compound has a wide margin of safety after injection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from µp atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in gaseous target H2/O2 exposed to a muon beam. Based on the data, we determined the muon transfer energy dependence up to 0.1 eV, showing an 8-fold increase in contrast with the predictions of constant rate in the low energy limit. This work set constraints on theoretical models of muon transfer, and is of fundamental importance for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of µp by the FAMU collaboration.

Abstract

During 2020 the health situation linked to the COVID-19 has led to the suspension of face-to-face classes in almost all of the Argentine territory. Different distance-learning resources were developed to replace traditional classes. The aim of this study was to assess the school engagement (SE) of Argentinian children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 in the distance schooling context due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to analyze its variability based on socioeconomic status, gender, educational level and movement restriction measures. Caregivers of 1205 children and adolescents (47,5% females, 51,8% males, 0,7% trans/non-binary) answered an online survey between June 5 and June 28, 2020. The survey included an SE questionnaire which was adapted to the virtual schooling context and showed adequate psychometric properties. The results showed higher values of behavioral SE in comparison to emotional SE, and differences according to the variables measured. Less general SE in students attending second cycle of primary school (9 to 12 years), higher behavioral SE in secondary school students, and higher emotional SE in preschool children was found. Girls and students of the upper-middle and upper classes who attend private schools reported higher levels of SE in both dimensions. Also, lower SE was found in students under isolation measures, comparing to those under distancing measures. The contribution of the results for the analysis of the current situation is discussed, and the importance of school engagement as a central variable to assess the effectiveness of the educational practices in a pandemic context is highlighted. Abstract

BDSIM is a program that uses a suite of high energy physics software in- cluding Geant4, CLHEP & ROOT, to seamlessly track particles through a 3-dimensional accelerator model utilising the full range of particles and physics processes from Geant4. BDSIM was originally developed to simulate linear colliders such as the International Linear Collider (ILC), but has more recently been extended for application to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and gen- erally to storage rings. Abstract

This chapter addresses the connection between the right to justification and power. It reconstructs Forst’s noumenal understanding of power by analyzing his argumentative steps from the recognition of reasons by subjects of power to the thesis that this recognition requires justification and, ultimately, to the conclusion that power requires justification. It then challenges different aspects of this account related to a conceptual link and a normative link between power and justification. As far as the conceptual link is concerned, the chapter critically explores Forst’s various premises in order to challenge his conclusion that power requires justification. This critical exploration raises doubts about Forst’s starting point that to be a subject of power is to be moved by reasons.

Abstract

We aimed to assess the rate and predictive factors of bloodstream infection (BSI) due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa in neutropenic cancer patients. We performed a multicenter, retrospective cohort study including oncohematological neutropenic patients with BSI due to P. aeruginosa conducted across 34 centers in 12 countries from January 2006 to May 2018. A mixed logistic regression model was used to estimate a model to predict the multidrug resistance of the causative pathogens. of a total of 1,217 episodes of BSI due to P. aeruginosa, 309 episodes (25.4%) were caused by MDR strains. the rate of multidrug resistance increased significantly over the study period (P = 0.033). Predictors of MDR P. aeruginosa BSI were prior therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam (odds ratio [OR), 3.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.29 to 5.30), prior antipseudomonal carbapenem use (OR, 2.53; 95% CI, 1.65 to 3.87), fluoroquinolone prophylaxis (OR, 2.99; 95% CI, 1.92 to 4.64), underlying hematological disease (OR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.26 to 3.44), and the presence of a urinary catheter (OR, 2.54; 95% CI, 1.65 to 3.91), whereas older age (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97 to 0.99) was found to be protective. Abstract

Physical review applied 14(6), 064066 (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevApplied.14.064066, Beam collimation in high-energy colliders is customarily carried out by means of massive amorphous absorbers surrounding the circulating beam. Several studies were performed in the last decades to establish an innovative collimation technique that relies on particle deflection by means of channeling between crystalline planes of a bent crystal. We report the operational use of crystal collimation in the Large Hadron Collider that was achieved during a special high-$β^∗$ physics run with low-intensity beams, representing a milestone for both accelerator and high-energy physics that could pave the way for new synergies in the near future. The deployment of this scheme was steered and motivated by machine-simulation studies, which were then confirmed experimentally using data provided by the experiments thanks to a sensitivity not accessible with the ring instrumentation. The evidence of beam-related experimental background reduction, improved data quality, and faster halo removal with respect to amorphous collimators is obtained using bent crystals as the primary collimation stage. A detailed description of preparatory studies and operational performance is reported, together with a comparison between experimental results and theoretical expectations., Published by American Physical Society, College Park, Md. Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up anew energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design valueand the integrated luminosity (totalnumber of collisions) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complexand exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures(underground and on surface)and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

81. Supervivencia de pacientes con metástasis cervical de primario desconocido en el Instituto Nacional de Oncología y Radiobiología. 2007-2012

Abstract

Resumen Introducción: Las metástasis cervicales con primario oculto representan el 5% de los tumores de cabeza y cuello. Su diagnóstico y tratamiento han sufrido modificaciones con los años según las diferentes investigaciones, con vistas a mayores tasas de supervivencia. Objetivo: Determinar la supervivencia global y según diferentes variables. Material y Método: Investigación retrospectiva, descriptiva y longitudinal de 96 pacientes diagnosticados en el Instituto Nacional de Oncología y Radiobiología (INOR) en el periodo 2007-2012, manteniéndose el seguimiento hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2017. Resultados: De los pacientes estudiados, 65 eran hombres (67,7%) y 31 mujeres (32,3%), para una razón de 2,1:1, con una media de edad de 61,4 años. El tabaquismo estuvo presente en el 64,6% de la población. El nivel ganglionar más afectado fue el II y 41 pacientes (42,7%) presentaron una enfermedad N1 al diagnóstico. En 42 pacientes (43,8%) estuvo presente el grado histológico poco diferenciado. Al 70,9% se les practicó cirugía con adyuvancia o sin ella y el 86,5% tuvo respuesta completa. El tumor primario apareció en el 13,5% de los casos, más frecuente en amígdala. La supervivencia global a los 5 años fue del 74% y resultaron variables determinantes de supervivencia el estado ganglionar y la extensión extraganglionar. Los resultados coinciden con la literatura revisada. Conclusión: La supervivencia global a los 5 años de los pacientes con metástasis cervical de primario oculto es elevada, tiene tendencia a mejorar con el paso de los años y está determinada por el estado ganglionar y la extensión extracapsular de forma inversamente proporcional.

Abstract

Beam Delivery Simulation (BDSIM) is a program that simulates the passage of particles in a particle accelerator. It uses a suite of standard high energy physics codes (Geant4, ROOT and CLHEP) to create a computational model of a particle accelerator that combines accurate accelerator tracking routines with all of the physics processes of particles in Geant4. This unique combination permits radiation and detector background simulations in accelerators where both accurate tracking of all particles is required over long range or over many revolutions of a circular machine, as well as interaction with the material of the accelerator.

Abstract

Volume changes and whole cell membrane currents activated during gradual osmolarity decrease in C6 glioma cells: contribution of two types of [K.sup.+] channels. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 286: C 1399-C1409, 2004. First published January 21,2004; 10.1152/ajpcell.00198.2003.--Volume changes and whole cell ionic currents activated by gradual osmolarity reductions (GOR) of 1.8 mosM/min were characterized in C6 glioma cells. Cells swell less in GOR than after sudden osmolarity reductions (SOR), the extent of swelling being partly [Ca.sup.2+] dependent. In nominally [Ca.sup.2+]-free conditions, GOR activated predominantly whole cell outward currents. Cells depolarized from the initial -79 mV to a steady state of -54 mV reached at 18% osmolarity reduction [hyposmolarity of -18% (H-18%)]. Recordings of [Cl.sup.-] and [K.sup.+] currents showed activation at H-3% of an outwardly rectifying [Cl.sup.-] current, with conductance of 1.6 nS, sensitive to niflumic acid and 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)benzoic acid, followed at H-18% by an outwardly rectifying [K.sup.+] current with conductance of 4.1 nS, inhibited by clofilium but insensitive to the typical [K.sup.+] channel blockers. With 200 nM [Ca.sup.2+] in the patch pipette, whole cell currents activated at H-3% and at H-13% cells depolarized from -77 to -63 mV. A [K.sup.+] current activated at H-l%, showing a rapid increase in conductance, suppressed by charybdotoxin and insensitive to clofilium. These results show the operation of two different [K.sup.+] channels in response to GOR in the same cell type, activated by [Ca.sup.2+] and osmolarity and with different osmolarity activation thresholds. Taurine and glutamate efflux, monitored by labeled tracers, showed delayed osmolarity thresholds of H-39 and H-33%, respectively. This observation clearly separates the C[l.sup.-] and amino acid osmosensitive pathways.
