Para tanto, partiu-se da construção de um pluviômetro tipo pet em sala de aula, bem como a construção e interpretação de gráficos da distribuição de chuvas em cada mês do ano nesse município no período compreendido entre janeiro de 1994 e dezembro de 2012. Considerando que a maioria dos alunos que estão concluindo o Ensino Médio reside na zona rural desse município, a finalidade desse trabalho é que os alunos utilizem e divulguem essas informações nas propriedades onde residem e façam dessas uma previsão mais concisa sobre a distribuição da chuva ao longo dos meses. Pretende-se dessa forma ensinar Geometria e Estatística de maneira contextualizada aplicando esses conteúdos em problemas locais no município de Vila Pavão ES contribuindo assim para dar significado prático a esses conteúdos matemáticos This report has the subject of presenting the contextualization of concepts of Geometry and Statistics for the third level college students from Vila Pavão city Espírito Santo. Was begun from the construction of a plastic pluviometer in class, also the construction and interpretation of grafics for the distribution of rain in each month of the year in this city, through the period from January of the year 1994 to December of the year 2012. Considering that most part of the students concluding college live in the countryside of this city, the intention of this report is that the students use this information and make them spread on the farms they live and have a concise forecast about the distribution of rain throughout the months. Information technology (IT) fashions are new emerging IT innovations that are going through a hyped phase. Consequently they are on the rise and their proponents claim they are a fundamental improvement offering solutions to real or perceived problems with IT. Naturally, IT fashions are characterized by both high risk and high expected returns. Hitherto, suitable methodologies to quantify the impacts of IT fashions have been virtually absent. Decisions on IT fashion engagements (ITFE) are often made following a gut feeling or jumping on the bandwagon. Research within this area provides mainly empirical or argumentative results emphasizing the importance of academic engagement with IT fashions. To support business decisions on IT innovations and to demonstrate the importance of steady ITFE within an IT innovation portfolio, this paper aims at a model that provides the optimal share of ITFE within an IT innovation portfolio under risk/return aspects. Using a real-world example from the financial industry, we obtain first results and recommendations for the role of ITFE within an IT innovation portfolio. We find that engagement with risky IT fashions can be used not only to maximize the value of an IT innovation portfolio but even to minimize its overall risk. more...

MedAustron [1], the Austrian hadron therapy center is currently under construction. Irradiation will be performed using active scanning with proton and carbon ion pencil beams. Major beam delivery system contributors to dose heterogeneities are evaluated: beam position, beam size and spot weight errors. Their individual and combined effect on the dose distribution is quantified, using semianalytical models of lateral beam spread in the nozzle and target and depth-dose curves for protons and carbon ions. Deduced requirements on critical parts of the beam delivery system are presented. Preventive and active methods to suppress the impact of beam delivery inaccuracies are proposed. more...

The adoption of synchrotrons for medical applications necessitates a comprehensive on-line verification of all beam parameters, autonomous of common beam monitors. In particular for energy verification, the required precision of down to 0.1MeV in absolute terms, poses a special challenge regarding the betatron-core driven 3rd order extraction mechanism which is intended to be used at MedAustron [1]. Two different energy verification options have been studied and their limiting factors were investigated: 1) A time-of-flight measurement in the synchrotron, limited by the orbit circumference information and measurement duration as well as extraction uncertainties. 2) A calorimeter-style system in the extraction line, limited by radiation hardness and statistical fluctuations. Background Computational prediction of functionally related groups of genes (functional modules) from large-scale data is an important issue in computational biology. Gene expression experiments and interaction networks are well studied large-scale data sources, available for many not yet exhaustively annotated organisms. It has been well established, when analyzing these two data sources jointly, modules are often reflected by highly interconnected (dense) regions in the interaction networks whose participating genes are co-expressed. However, the tractability of the problem had remained unclear and methods by which to exhaustively search for such constellations had not been presented. Methodology/Principal Findings We provide an algorithmic framework, referred to as Densely Connected Biclustering (DECOB), by which the aforementioned search problem becomes tractable. To benchmark the predictive power inherent to the approach, we computed all co-expressed, dense regions in physical protein and genetic interaction networks from human and yeast. An automatized filtering procedure reduces our output which results in smaller collections of modules, comparable to state-of-the-art approaches. Our results performed favorably in a fair benchmarking competition which adheres to standard criteria. We demonstrate the usefulness of an exhaustive module search, by using the unreduced output to more quickly perform GO term related function prediction tasks. We point out the advantages of our exhaustive output by predicting functional relationships using two examples. Conclusion/Significance We demonstrate that the computation of all densely connected and co-expressed regions in interaction networks is an approach to module discovery of considerable value. Beyond confirming the well settled hypothesis that such co-expressed, densely connected interaction network regions reflect functional modules, we open up novel computational ways to comprehensively analyze the modular organization of an organism based on prevalent and largely available large-scale datasets.
