Background: Systems that capture motion under laboratory conditions limit validity in real-world environments. Mobile motion capture solutions such as Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) can progress our understanding of "real" human movement. IMU data must be validated in each application to interpret with clinical applicability; this is particularly true for diverse populations. Our IMU analysis method builds on the OpenSim IMU Inverse Kinematics toolkit integrating the Versatile Quaternion-based Filter and incorporates realistic constraints to the underlying biomechanical model. We validate our processing method against the reference standard optical motion capture in a case report with participants with transfemoral amputation fitted with a Percutaneous Osseointegrated Implant (POI) and without amputation walking over level ground. We hypothesis that by using this novel pipeline, we can validate IMU motion capture data, to a clinically acceptable degree. Results: Average RMSE (across all joints) between the two systems from the participant with a unilateral transfemoral amputation (TFA) on the amputated and the intact sides were 2.35° (IQR = 1.45°) and 3.59° (IQR = 2.00°) respectively. Equivalent results in the non-amputated participant were 2.26° (IQR = 1.08°). Joint level average RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 1.66° to 3.82° and from 1.21° to 5.46° in the non-amputated participant. In plane average RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 2.17° (coronal) to 3.91° (sagittal) and from 1.96° (transverse) to 2.32° (sagittal) in the non-amputated participant. Coefficients of Multiple Correlation (CMC) results between the two systems in the TFA ranged from 0.74 to > 0.99 and from 0.72 to > 0.99 in the non-amputated participant and resulted in 'excellent' similarity in each data set average, in every plane and at all joint levels. Normalized RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 3.40% (knee level) to 54.54% (pelvis level) and from 2.18% to 36.01% in the non-amputated participant. Conclusions: We offer a modular processing pipeline that enables the addition of extra layers, facilitates changes to the underlying biomechanical model, and can accept raw IMU data from any vendor. Digital quantification of gait can be used to measure aging- and disease-related decline in mobility. Gait performance also predicts prognosis, disease progression, and response to therapies. Most gait analysis systems require large amounts of space, resources, and expertise to implement and are not widely accessible. Thus, there is a need for a portable system that accurately characterizes gait. Here, depth video from two portable cameras accurately reconstructed gait metrics comparable to those reported by a pressure-sensitive walkway. 392 research participants walked across a four-meter pressure-sensitive walkway while depth video was recorded. Gait speed, cadence, and step and stride durations and lengths strongly correlated (r > 0.9) between modalities, with root-mean-squared-errors (RMSE) of 0.04 m/s, 2.3 steps/min, 0.03 s, and 0.05–0.08 m for speed, cadence, step/stride duration, and step/stride length, respectively. Step, stance, and double support durations (gait cycle percentage) significantly correlated (r > 0.6) between modalities, with 5% RMSE for step and stance and 10% RMSE for double support. In an exploratory analysis, gait speed from both modalities significantly related to healthy, mild, moderate, or severe categorizations of Charleson Comorbidity Indices (ANOVA, Tukey's HSD, p < 0.0125). Purpose: 3D FatNavs are rapid acquisitions of MRI fat-volumes within the head that can be used for retrospective motion correction for brain MRI. 3D FatNavs typically use very high acceleration factors and are reconstructed with the GRAPPA parallel imaging technique. However, the GRAPPA reconstruction is not expected to perform well on 3D FatNavs volumes in the presence of strong motion due to the mismatched calibration data acquired once at the start of the scan, leading to motion-parameter misestimation. This study aims to assess the accuracy and precision of 3D FatNav-derived motion-estimates in the presence of large changes in head position. Methods: Rigid motion parameters were simulated and applied retrospectively to the 3D FatNav volumes from MPRAGE datasets acquired at 3T. The transformed images were then re-reconstructed using GRAPPA to simulate real motion deterioration of the fat-navigator, and used to estimate the motion applied and evaluate the tracking inaccuracy. This information was then used to estimate the residual motion after 3D FatNav-based motion correction and applied to the original MPRAGE volumes. The effect of the misestimation was assessed using an image quality metric and the evaluation scores from two observers. Quality boundaries were then estimated to assess the motion tolerance when 3D FatNavs are used. Results: The GRAPPA reconstruction was shown to deteriorate for large changes in the head position, affecting the quality of 3D FatNav volumes and consequently degrading the accuracy of the motion-estimates. Based on our simulations, the estimated threshold of motion that led to a noticeable degradation in the MPRAGE image quality was up to RMS values of 3.7° and 3 mm for rotations and translations respectively. Conclusions: 3D FatNavs were shown to be able to correct for a wide range of motion levels and types. Introduction: Some research indicates that neurodivergent people are less likely than “neurotypical” people to adapt their movements to a partner’s movements to facilitate interpersonal motor synchrony. Researchers therefore suggest synchrony deficits underlie the social differences associated with autism and other neurodivergences. Intensive Interaction (II) is a client-led approach, where Learning Support Workers (LSW) follow the lead of learners to create balanced and reciprocal interactions. Methods: We aimed to examine the balance of synchrony in learners with autism and Severe Learning Disabilities and their LSWs in a special education college where learners had prior experience with II. Using Motion Energy Analysis, we assessed the degree to which each partner acted as a leader, and hence which partner acted as a follower, during moments of close synchrony. Results: Overall, learners and LSWs showed higher than chance synchrony. There were no differences in the degree to which each partner led the moments of synchrony, or the amount pairs synchronized with zero-lag, where there was no delay between each partners’ movements. Discussion: The equal balance of leading and following in the learner and LSW pairs demonstrates that both partners consistently adapted their movements to their partner’s movements to facilitate synchrony. The findings tentatively challenge the notion of a synchrony deficit in autism and suggest synchrony can be present in cross-neurotype pairs in comfortable and engaging conditions. The automatic detection of smoke by analyzing the video stream acquired by traditional surveillance cameras is becoming a more and more interesting problem for the scientific community thanks to the necessity to prevent fires at the very early stages. The adoption of a smart visual sensor, namely a computer vision algorithm running in real time, allows one to overcome the limitations of standard physical sensors. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging problem, due to the strong similarity of the smoke with other environmental elements like clouds, fog and dust. In addition to this challenge, data available for training deep neural networks is limited and not fully representative of real environments. Within this context, in this paper we propose a new method for smoke detection based on the combination of motion and appearance analysis with a modern convolutional neural network (CNN). Moreover, we propose a new dataset, called the MIVIA Smoke Detection Dataset (MIVIA-SDD), publicly available for research purposes; it consists of 129 videos covering about 28 h of recordings. The proposed hybrid method, trained and evaluated on the proposed dataset, demonstrated to be very effective by achieving a 94% smoke recognition rate and, at the same time, a substantially lower false positive rate if compared with fully deep learning-based approaches (14% vs. 100%). Therefore, the proposed combination of motion and appearance analysis with deep learning CNNs can be further investigated to improve the precision of fire detection approaches. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and hypofractionation using pencil-beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PBSPT) is an attractive option for thoracic malignancies. Combining the advantages of target coverage conformity and critical organ sparing from both PBSPT and SBRT, this new delivery technique has great potential to improve the therapeutic ratio, particularly for tumors near critical organs. Safe and effective implementation of PBSPT SBRT/hypofractionation to treat thoracic malignancies is more challenging than the conventionally fractionated PBSPT because of concerns of amplified uncertainties at the larger dose per fraction. The NRG Oncology and Particle Therapy Cooperative Group Thoracic Subcommittee surveyed proton centers in the United States to identify practice patterns of thoracic PBSPT SBRT/hypofractionation. From these patterns, we present recommendations for future technical development of proton SBRT/hypofractionation for thoracic treatment. Among other points, the recommendations highlight the need for volumetric image guidance and multiple computed tomography–based robust optimization and robustness tools to minimize further the effect of uncertainties associated with respiratory motion. Study Design. Clinical experimental diagnostic study. Objective. The objective of the study was to investigate cervical spine dynamics including changes in the cervical foramina in patients experiencing intermittent arm radiculopathy. Background. Cervical foraminal stenosis is a frequent cause of radicular arm pain. The Spurling test, while specific, lacks the precision to identify symptomatic nerve roots. The relationship among vertebral motion, foraminal changes, and radiculopathy during a Spurling test remains underexplored. Patients and Methods. Ten patients with positive Spurling tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed 1 or 2-level cervical foraminal stenosis were scanned using the Dynamic MRI Compression System enabling a simulated Spurling test inside the MRI gantry of a 3T MRI scanner with a dedicated neck coil. First, a relaxed image acquisition was undertaken, followed by slowly applying the Spurling test until the patient reported aggravation of radiculopathy or discomfort, where the next image series was taken. Zero echo time MRI was employed to obtain computed tomography (CT)--like images. The images were thereafter analyzed using the Sectra® CT-based Micromotion Analysis software for motion analysis. Results. The C4/C5 level exhibited the most significant movements both in translation and rotation, with less movements observed in C5 to C6 and C6 to C7 levels. No uniform pattern emerged that differentiated suspected stenotic levels from nonsuspected levels. Despite relatively small vertebral movements, 9/10 of patients reported arm pain during provocation, indicating extremely narrow margins of tolerance. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the utility of zero echo time MRI and CT-based Micromotion Analysis in detecting subtle yet clinically relevant vertebral motions influencing the foramina in the cervical spine during the Spurling maneuver. These findings could lead to a better understanding and potentially improved diagnostic strategies for cervical foraminal stenosis, although further research with a larger cohort is necessary to confirm these results. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in sports involving jumping and rapid direction changes, often occurring in non-contact situations. The risk of ACL injury is evaluated by knee flexion and valgus angles; a small knee flexion angle combined with a large valgus angle increases the risk. Monitoring these angles during activities can help athletes recognize their ACL injury risk and adjust their movements. Traditional 3D motion analysis, used for measuring knee angles, is costly and impractical for daily practice. This study proposes a knee supporter with stretch sensors to estimate knee flexion and valgus angles in practice settings, evaluating ACL injury risk and notifying athletes of high-risk movements. The proposed device wirelessly transmits data from three stretch sensors placed on the device to a PC and uses machine learning to estimate the knee angles. The results of the evaluation experiments, conducted with data from five healthy male and female participants in their twenties, indicate that the estimation accuracy for the knee flexion angle, achieved by a model trained using a Random Forest Regressor (RFR) with data from individuals other than the target user, resulted in a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 8.86 degrees. Background: Movement is a defining aspect of animals, but it is rarely studied using quantitative methods in microscopic invertebrates. Bdelloid rotifers are a cosmopolitan class of aquatic invertebrates of great scientific interest because of their ability to survive in very harsh environment and also because they represent a rare example of an ancient lineage that only includes asexually reproducing species. In this class, Adineta ricciae has become a model species as it is unusually easy to culture. Yet, relatively little is known of its ethology and almost nothing on how it behaves during feeding. Methods: To explore feeding behaviour in A. ricciae, as well as to provide an example of application of computational ethology in a microscopic invertebrate, we apply Procrustes motion analysis in combination with ordination and clustering methods to a laboratory bred sample of individuals recorded during feeding. Results: We demonstrate that movement during feeding can be accurately described in a simple two-dimensional shape space with three main 'modes' of motion. Foot telescoping, with the body kept straight, is the most frequent 'mode', but it is accompanied by periodic rotations of the foot together with bending while the foot is mostly retracted. Conclusions: Procrustes motion analysis is a relatively simple but effective tool for describing motion during feeding in A. ricciae. The application of this method generates quantitative data that could be analysed in relation to genetic and ecological differences in a variety of experimental settings. AbstractThe temperature measurement during grinding process is difficult due to work–wheel interactions and nearby coolant layers. Surface integrity also gets affected by the grinding burns caused due to high heat generation. Therefore, the theoretical temperature estimation could provide prior detection of grinding burns. This article presents an analytical model to predict the heat flux in pressurized lubricated ultrasonic-assisted surface grinding of Nimonic 80 A using Cubic Boron Nitride (cBN) grinding wheel (vitrified grinding bond, grit 80/100, concentration 100%). In this process, the high frequency of ultrasonic vibration and low amplitude is employed to vibrate the workpiece. In the current modeling approach, the motion analysis of grains has been estimated initially, which provided the effective grinding force. This effective grinding force was then utilized to obtain the analytical model of heat flux. Finally, the model was formulated by considering the effect of heat conducted into the material and heat released due to the lubrication system. The established model comprised the effects of lubricating and machining parameters such as dynamic viscosity of cutting fluid, pressure, diameter and length of cutting fluid pipes, width of cut, frequency, speed of table, amplitude, depth of cut and speed of the wheel. This numerical model revealed affirmative results substantiated by experimentally procured data. This developed model can add to the direction of sustainable grinding approach. Vision-based estimation of the motion of a moving target is usually formulated as a bearing-only estimation problem where the visual measurement is modeled as a bearing vector. Although the bearing-only approach has been studied for decades, a fundamental limitation of this approach is that it requires extra lateral motion of the observer to enhance the target's observability. Unfortunately, the extra lateral motion conflicts with the desired motion of the observer in many tasks. It is well-known that, once a target has been detected in an image, a bounding box that surrounds the target can be obtained. Surprisingly, this common visual measurement especially its size information has not been well explored up to now. In this paper, we propose a new bearing-angle approach to estimate the motion of a target by modeling its image bounding box as bearing-angle measurements. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that this approach can significantly enhance the observability without relying on additional lateral motion of the observer. The benefit of the bearing-angle approach comes with no additional cost because a bounding box is a standard output of object detection algorithms. In this era of endoscopic surgery, feedback from recorded surgical videos is useful and efficient; therefore, effective methods of obtaining this feedback are needed. We analyzed surgical videos using motion analysis software and verified the usefulness of visualizing and objectively evaluating surgical procedures. We measured the grasping and traction angles of the vascular sheath when using forceps and the trajectory of the forceps tip for the upper pulmonary vein during right upper lobectomy during video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery performed by three trainers and trainees. Compared with the trainers, the trainees exhibited insufficient traction of the vascular sheath, performed many slow and unnecessary manipulations, and sometimes performed sudden and fast movements. By visualizing the surgical procedures, the trainee will be better able to identify dangerous or futile movements. It may also make it easier to objectively recognize improvements in one's technique. In this work, a novel non-probabilistic time-dependent reliability analysis method is proposed for evaluating the motion accuracy of a mechanism. Previous studies have usually assumed that uncertain variables satisfy a certain probability distribution and have given insufficient consideration to time-dependent variables. In practical engineering problems, however, there are also uncertain variables that need to be expressed in non-probabilistic models. The novelty of the proposed method is that the nonprobability interval variables and time-dependent variables are considered together in the modeling, and extreme value response analysis is applied to the reliability analysis. As a result, the time-dependent reliability problem is transformed into an instantaneous reliability problem for simplified calculation. The reliability indices obtained can be used to evaluate the reliability of the motion accuracy of the mechanism. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the local optimization algorithm in the non-probabilistic model are obtained through the analysis of two application examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an on-line closed-loop identification of mainly mass and inertia of an under-actuated aerial vehicle, namely a quadrotor acting as an aerial manipulator, is presented. Being treated as a rigid body, only one set of eighteen- or six tri-axial linear accelerometers is used to facilitate such estimation. Force and torque disturbances acting upon the vehicle during identification are also estimated which will refine the overall estimation quality of the unknown parameters. Namely, recursive linear and nonlinear least squares methods are used to obtain initial and refined estimations, respectively. Random disturbances are introduced to the closed-loop system to ensure enough excitation of the overall system. Issues related to identifiability, stability and performance are discussed. Since the proposed method depends on general kinematical and dynamical analyses of motion, it is claimed that the presented method will be also applicable to a wider range of, mainly, aerial vehicles. The dynamics of DNA in the cell nucleus plays a role in cellular processes and fates but the interplay of DNA mobility with the hierarchical levels of DNA organization is still underexplored. Here, we made use of DNA replication to directly label genomic DNA in an unbiased genome-wide manner. This was followed by live-cell time-lapse microscopy of the labeled DNA combining imaging at different resolutions levels simultaneously and allowing one to trace DNA motion across organization levels within the same cells. Quantification of the labeled DNA segments at different microscopic resolution levels revealed sizes comparable to the ones reported for DNA loops using 3D super-resolution microscopy, topologically associated domains (TAD) using 3D widefield microscopy, and also entire chromosomes. By employing advanced chromatin tracking and image registration, we discovered that DNA exhibited higher mobility at the individual loop level compared to the TAD level and even less at the chromosome level. Additionally, our findings indicate that chromatin movement, regardless of the resolution, slowed down during the S phase of the cell cycle compared to the G1/G2 phases. Furthermore, we found that a fraction of DNA loops and TADs exhibited directed movement with the majority depicting constrained movement. Our data also indicated spatial mobility differences with DNA loops and TADs at the nuclear periphery and the nuclear interior exhibiting lower velocity and radius of gyration than the intermediate locations. On the basis of these insights, we propose that there is a link between DNA mobility and its organizational structure including spatial distribution, which impacts cellular processes. This study compared the joint kinematics between the front squat (FS) conducted in the upright (natural gravity) position and in the supine position on a short arm human centrifuge (SAHC). Male participants (N = 12) with no prior experience exercising on a centrifuge completed a FS in the upright position before (PRE) and after (POST) a FS exercise conducted on the SAHC while exposed to artificial gravity (AG). Participants completed, in randomized order, three sets of six repetitions with a load equal to body weight or 1.25 × body weight for upright squats, and 1 g and 1.25 g at the center of gravity (COG) for AG. During the terrestrial squats, the load was applied with a barbell. Knee (left/right) and hip (left/right) flexion angles were recorded with a set of inertial measurement units. AG decreased the maximum flexion angle (MAX) of knees and hips as well as the range of motion (ROM), both at 1 and 1.25 g. Minor adaptation was observed between the first and the last repetition performed in AG. AG affects the ability to FS in naïve participants by reducing MAX, MIN and ROM of the knees and hip. In recent years, preoperative planning has undergone significant advancements, with a dual focus: improving the accuracy of implant placement and enhancing the prediction of functional outcomes. These breakthroughs have been made possible through the development of advanced processing methods for 3D preoperative images. These methods not only offer novel visualization techniques but can also be seamlessly integrated into computer-aided design models. Additionally, the refinement of motion capture systems has played a pivotal role in this progress. These "markerless" systems are more straightforward to implement and facilitate easier data analysis. Simultaneously, the emergence of machine learning algorithms, utilizing artificial intelligence, has enabled the amalgamation of anatomical and functional data, leading to highly personalized preoperative plans for patients. The shift in preoperative planning from 2D towards 3D, from static to dynamic, is closely linked to technological advances, which will be described in this instructional review. The task of transporting objects is a fundamental part of daily living activities. Previous kinematic studies focusing on tasks such as pointing, reach-to-grasp, and drinking have not fully captured the motor behaviors involved in object transportation, including placing a cup on a table or storing items in specific places. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the motor behavior associated with transporting a mug using upper limb kinematic variables. Fifteen healthy adults were instructed to transport an open-handle mug across a table. The kinematic metrics evaluated included object end-error for accuracy, frontal and lateral end-range for precision, movement time, peak velocity, time to peak velocity for control strategy, object path ratio for efficiency, and interjoint coordination. The stability of motor behavior was assessed through a test-retest analysis. The mug transporting task achieved accuracy with a radius <10 mm around the target, a peak velocity of ∼0.4 m/s, a control strategy where acceleration time constituted about 30% of the movement time, and a slightly curved trajectory. The test-retest analysis confirmed stable motor behavior across all kinematic metrics (ICCs > 0.75). Thus, the mug transporting task exhibited unique and stable kinematic characteristics, distinguishing it from non-transport activities and effectively mirroring transporting activities of daily living. Analysis on eddy motion is the essential method for understanding viscous flows. Compared with the current methods to identify the vortex, the study presents a method to investigate vortex structures based on topological analysis and nonlinear dynamics, and establishes a connection between the direction of the vortex and the real eigenvalue of the velocity gradient tensor. The study highlights the significance of the real and imaginary parts of complex eigenvalues in vortex development, wherein the real part indicates topological stability and the imaginary part represents swirling strength, contributing to get the characters of the viscous flows. Armor technologists' improvement of protection systems led to the design of complex systems. Given the risk factor on human life, increasing requirements on the ballistic resistance evaluation are imposed. Consequently, an increased effort is dedicated to estimating the perforation probability curve as a function of the bullet impact velocity. The main limitation of methods that fits a normal law to perforation velocities is their purely statistical character. A Brownian-based approach that couples the system response variability and physics was proposed using the Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov criterion function for model parameters estimation. One major limitation of this inference approach is the large experimental database required for its execution. The contribution of this paper is the introduction of the maximum likelihood inference for parameters estimation of the Brownian-based approach. The agreement between the obtained results and the experimental ones confirms the appropriateness of the likelihood inference to solve the studied problem. Moreover, the estimations uncertainty was analyzed and compared to the existing method ones. It was observed that the proposed model reduces the confidence intervals on key velocity estimations. Background: Velocity-based training (VBT) is commonly used for programming and autoregulation of resistance training. Velocity may also be measured during resistance training to estimate one repetition maximum and monitor fatigue. This study quantifies the validity of Metric VBT, a mobile application that uses camera-vision for measuring barbell range of motion (RoM) and mean velocity during resistance exercises. Methods: Twenty-four participants completed back squat and bench press repetitions across various loads. Five mobile devices were placed at varying angles (0, ±10, and ±20°) perpendicular to the participant. The validity of Metric VBT was assessed in comparison to Vicon motion analysis using precision and recall, Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, and Bland-Altman plots. Proportional bias was assessed using linear regression. Results: Metric VBT accurately detected over 95% of repetitions. It showed moderate to substantial agreement with the Vicon system for measuring RoM in both exercises. The average Limits of Agreement (LoA) for RoM across all camera positions were −5.45 to 4.94 cm for squats and −5.80 to 3.55 cm for bench presses. Metric VBT exhibited poor to moderate agreement with the Vicon system for measuring mean velocity. The average LoA for mean velocity were 0.03 to 0.25 m/s for squats and −5.80 to 3.55 m/s for bench presses. A proportional bias was observed, with bias increasing as repetition velocity increased. Conclusions: Metric VBT's wide LoA for measuring RoM and mean velocity highlights significant accuracy concerns, exceeding acceptable levels for practical use. In this paper, the characteristics of special stamping process requirements and the shortcomings of existing application technology are studied. Through repeated motion simulation analysis and size optimization calculation, a kind of inertia-controlled molding press is proposed to make up for this technical vacancy. This paper first describes the working principle and structure scheme of the main transmission mechanism of the inertia-controlled molding press. With the help of Adams-View x64 2013, the main transmission mechanism is simulated and analyzed from the aspects of kinematics and dynamics, and a physical prototype is made to test the key reliability indexes of the main transmission mechanism. According to the test data, the static strength, stiffness, vibration characteristics, and dynamic characteristics of the 200 t inertia-controlled molding press are evaluated, which provides a reference for the design of this kind of machine tool. In professional sports, motion analysis has become a fundamental tool for the creation of training menu and to prevent injuries. However, motion analysis techniques are not among amateurs due to the associated high costs and the need for a certain degree of expertise to process and analyze the data. Although video cameras and IMUs are successfully used to monitor athletes’ motion in short-distance running sports, they require to place subjects in a controlled environment that is far from the real conditions met during a competition. Therefore, we propose a non-intrusive speed, stride, and pitch estimation method using 3D-LiDAR, which is compact and can measure real competitions. Our preliminary results show that the maximum error of the proposed method is 2.2%, indicating that the performance of the proposed method is comparable to that of video-based methods. This paper proposes a new type of omnidirectional mobile robot for land and air, which has three motion modes, combines the motion characteristics of land motion and air flight, has the ability to climb walls, and can be actively deformed to adapt to the working conditions according to the current working environment. The robot incorporates an innovative "rotor blade–single row omnidirectional wheel" composite structure, which is mainly characterized by a single row of continuous switching wheels covering the outside of each rotor blade, and does not need to provide additional power when moving on the ground and walls, relying on the driving force generated by the rotor blades to drive the continuous switching wheels driven by the rotor blades. This structure can effectively combine the land movement mode, wall crawling mode, and air flight mode, which reduces the energy consumption of the robot without increasing the weight, and we design a deformation device that can realize the transformation of the three modes into each other. This paper mainly focuses on the design of the robot structure and the analysis of the movement method, and the land omnidirectional movement experiments, wall crawling experiments, and air flight experiments were, respectively, carried out, and the results show that the proposed land and air omnidirectional mobile robot has the ability to adapt to the movement of each scene, and improves the upper limit of the robot's operation. In this study, a numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the coupled behaviour of a TLP (tension leg platform) -TAD (tender-assisted drilling) system under a series of regular waves in surge direction. The numerical model is established in the time domain considering the nonlinear characteristics of the mooring systems and the hydrodynamic interference. After the case validations, the effects of the wave periods and amplitudes on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the surge motions are investigated in detail. Then, the observed nonlinear dynamic characteristics are interpreted in detail through the existing theory of phase dynamics. The surge motions of the coupled system can show multiperiod nonlinear characteristics under regular waves in certain wave periods. Three forms of phase dynamic characteristics: phase locking, phase trapping, and phase drifting and slipping are observed in the surge motions of the tender-assisted drilling operation system. To address the low clearance rate issue of the anti-blocking mechanism for maize no-till planters in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of China, experiments and simulations were conducted to analyze the individual and collective movements of straw under the action of the round roller-claw anti-blocking mechanism. A tracer-based measurement method for straw displacement was applied firstly. Experimental results showed that the straw forward displacement could be characterized by the average horizontal displacements of longitudinal and lateral tracers, while the straw side displacement could be characterized by the lateral displacement of the longitudinal tracer. The straw forward displacement was 58.95% greater than the side displacement. Forward, side, and total displacements of straw increased as the mechanism's forward speed increased from 3 km/h to 7 km/h, with corresponding rates of increase at 233.98%, 43.20%, and 162.47%, respectively. Furthermore, a model of straw–soil–mechanism interaction was constructed in EDEM 2022 software. The relative error between experimental and simulated straw clearance rates was 11.20%, confirming the applicability of the simulation model for studying straw–soil–mechanism interaction. Based on the simulation model, three straw tracers of different lengths were selected to study the motion behavior of straw. It was inferred that despite differences in straw length, the movement behaviors of the three straw tracers under the influence of the anti-blocking mechanism were similar. Additionally, longer straws exhibited greater displacements in all directions. This paper serves as a reference for studying straw motion behavior influenced by anti-blocking mechanisms. The control of air flow fields generated in the textile manufacturing process is important to fiber motion. With the expansion of textile applications and the challenges brought by carbon emissions, a series of fundamental research has been conducted on the control of various forms of air flow fields in textile processes. This paper reviews the research on air flow fields and fiber motion in textile processes over the past few decades, focusing on both experimental and numerical studies. The air flow field characteristics, fiber motion patterns, and corresponding control methods for vortex, jet and shear flow fields in the textile process are summarized. The results show that the air flow field and fiber motion are major factors affecting textile structure. Offline and current online physical education classes are characterized by low learning efficiency and poor teaching quality. To solve this problem, the study combines a dynamic time regularization algorithm and local image feature action recognition with virtual technology, which is applied to online teaching to improve teaching quality. Experimental results indicate that the overall model accuracy reaches more than 94%, and in the public dataset MSR, the model accuracy reaches 91.4%. In the UTK dataset, the accuracy reaches 85.8%. When the accuracy of pose recognition is compared, the research model is superior to the two traditional models. The validation results against KNN and SVM are 62% and 71% as well as 79% and 84%, respectively, and the experimental results of the research model have improved by 9% and 5%. The research technique achieves an overall fit of more than 90% for different parts in the analysis of motion capture, which is superior to the traditional online instruction. The overall teaching satisfaction reaches more than 93.5% in the comparison of online physical education courses with offline courses. In summary, the optimized and improved posture recognition system is better for human motion capture, and the applied virtual technology can effectively improve the learning effect and teaching quality of online physical education courses. In order to explore the influence of deflectable fin on the motion state of small supercavitating vehicle, a nonlinear dynamic model of small supercavitating vehicle with fin-controlled function is established. The dynamic system of the vehicle is calculated, and the stability of the system is judged by Lyapunov exponent spectrum and phase-orbit diagram. The stable system, periodic oscillation system, and chaotic system with different fin feedback gain are analyzed by nonlinear dynamic analysis method, and the feedback gain parameter interval of small non-power supercavitating vehicle maintaining stable motion under velocity attenuation is obtained. In recent years, ultra-large-scale offshore wind turbines have attracted widespread attention. However, accurately evaluating the motion responses of offshore wind turbines under extreme conditions, especially for semisubmersible floating off-shore wind turbines, is often challenging. In order to assess the operational behavior of wind turbines under wind and wave loads, this paper adopted a numerical analysis method to solve the motion responses under extreme conditions. It specifically examines the motion responses of the IEA 15 MW wind turbine in terms of surge, heave, and pitch direction, focusing on environmental loads that occur once every 50 years. The results show that the wind turbine can still operate normally under the Ultimate condition. However, the average amplitude increased by 7% in the pitch direction and decreased by 4% in the heave direction compared to the rated condition. Under extreme conditions (occurring once every 50 years), with the wind turbine parked, the average amplitude in the surge direction reduced by 33%, while the average amplitude in the pitch direction reduced by 106%. This study aimed to clarify the kinematics, particularly of the shoulder and hip joints, during preparation for manual wheelchair-to-bed transfer (i.e. when flipping up the arm and foot supports). This cross-sectional study included 32 able-bodied individuals. The kinematics of the shoulder and hip joints when the arm and foot supports were flipped up of manual wheelchair, were evaluated using a markerless inertial sensor-based motion capture system. We found that flipping the arm support upwards involved a large amount of abduction, internal and external rotation, flexion, and extension at the shoulder joint, whereas flipping the foot support upwards involved a large amount of flexion at the hip joint. The findings suggest that it is necessary to consider the range of motion required to flip up the arm and foot supports of manual wheelchairs, particularly in those with limited shoulder and hip range of motion such as older people, neuromuscular disorders, and orthopedic disorders. In order to solve the problem of efficient trajectory control of centimeter-scale robots with small size, a small jellyfish robot (JRT) is designed and developed, which is composed of an air chamber, a center of gravity adjustment device and a jellyfish-inspired thruster with a size of only ⌀6.8 cm × 5.3 cm. Its trajectory can be effectively controlled underwater through the coordination of the center of gravity adjustment device and jellyfish-inspired thruster. Underwater experiments verify the function of JRT swimming and hovering in the vertical direction, horizontal directional swimming, and horizontal ejection. By analyzing the force balance relationship and motion state data of JRT swimming in the vertical and horizontal directions, a trajectory control scheme is proposed. The speed of horizontal directional swimming can reach 1.7 cm/s, and the trajectory deviation is 0—3.4 cm, which shows that the JRT has a good trajectory control ability and is expected to be applied in underwater resource exploration, environmental monitoring, and other fields.

[Objective] To deal the technical difficulties in further realizing the automation of de nucleating production of fresh peach slices. [Methods] A new type of fresh peach slicing and coining machine was designed. The cutting tool for slice kerning was simplified and analyzed by Mathematical analysis, and the motion characteristic equation and curve of the mechanism were obtained. The motion simulation analysis of the slicing and core-removing tool mechanism was carried out by using SolidWorks Motion software, and the motion characteristic curve of the mechanism was obtained.The correctness of the mathematical analysis was verified, and the rationality of the design of the cutting tool was also verified. [Results] The machine uses PLC control, including fresh peach conveyor chain feeding, fresh peach positioning, slicing tool movement, etc. Through the analysis of the field test results, the average cutting rate of fresh peach slicing and coiling machine reached 99.39%, the average coiling rate reached 99.15%, and the average breakage rate was lower than 0.12%. [Conclusion] The new type of fresh peach slicing and coiling machine can realize the automatic positioning, cutting and coiling of fresh peach, etc.

Abstract Background Systems that capture motion under laboratory conditions limit validity in real-world environments. Mobile motion capture solutions such as Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) can progress our understanding of "real" human movement. IMU data must be validated in each application to interpret with clinical applicability; this is particularly true for diverse populations. Our IMU analysis method builds on the OpenSim IMU Inverse Kinematics toolkit integrating the Versatile Quaternion-based Filter and incorporates realistic constraints to the underlying biomechanical model. We validate our processing method against the reference standard optical motion capture in a case report with participants with transfemoral amputation fitted with a Percutaneous Osseointegrated Implant (POI) and without amputation walking over level ground. We hypothesis that by using this novel pipeline, we can validate IMU motion capture data, to a clinically acceptable degree. Results Average RMSE (across all joints) between the two systems from the participant with a unilateral transfemoral amputation (TFA) on the amputated and the intact sides were 2.35° (IQR = 1.45°) and 3.59° (IQR = 2.00°) respectively. Equivalent results in the non-amputated participant were 2.26° (IQR = 1.08°). Joint level average RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 1.66° to 3.82° and from 1.21° to 5.46° in the non-amputated participant. In plane average RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 2.17° (coronal) to 3.91° (sagittal) and from 1.96° (transverse) to 2.32° (sagittal) in the non-amputated participant. Coefficients of Multiple Correlation (CMC) results between the two systems in the TFA ranged from 0.74 to > 0.99 and from 0.72 to > 0.99 in the non-amputated participant and resulted in ‘excellent’ similarity in each data set average, in every plane and at all joint levels. Normalized RMSE between the two systems from the TFA ranged from 3.40% (knee level) to 54.54% (pelvis level) and from 2.18% to 36.01% in the non-amputated participant. Conclusions We offer a modular processing pipeline that enables the addition of extra layers, facilitates changes to the underlying biomechanical model, and can accept raw IMU data from any vendor. We successfully validate the pipeline using data, for the first time, from a TFA participant using a POI and have proved our hypothesis.

Abstract Background Movement is a defining aspect of animals, but it is rarely studied using quantitative methods in microscopic invertebrates. Bdelloid rotifers are a cosmopolitan class of aquatic invertebrates of great scientific interest because of their ability to survive in very harsh environment and also because they represent a rare example of an ancient lineage that only includes asexually reproducing species. In this class, Adineta ricciae has become a model species as it is unusually easy to culture. Yet, relatively little is known of its ethology and almost nothing on how it behaves during feeding. Methods To explore feeding behaviour in A. ricciae, as well as to provide an example of application of computational ethology in a microscopic invertebrate, we apply Procrustes motion analysis in combination with ordination and clustering methods to a laboratory bred sample of individuals recorded during feeding. Results We demonstrate that movement during feeding can be accurately described in a simple two-dimensional shape space with three main ‘modes’ of motion. Foot telescoping, with the body kept straight, is the most frequent ‘mode’, but it is accompanied by periodic rotations of the foot together with bending while the foot is mostly retracted. Conclusions Procrustes motion analysis is a relatively simple but effective tool for describing motion during feeding in A. ricciae. The application of this method generates quantitative data that could be analysed in relation to genetic and ecological differences in a variety of experimental settings. The study provides an example that is easy to replicate in other invertebrates, including other microscopic animals whose behavioural ecology is often poorly known.

Accurate analysis of sperm cell flagellar dynamics plays a crucial role in understanding sperm motility as flagella parameters determine cell behavior in the spatiotemporal domain. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by harnessing Genetic Algorithms (GA) to analyze sperm flagellar motion characteristics and compare the results with the traditional decomposition method based on Fourier analysis. Our analysis focuses on extracting key parameters of the equation approximating flagellar shape, including beating period time, bending amplitude, mean curvature, and wavelength. Additionally, we delve into the extraction of phase constants and initial swimming directions, vital for the comprehensive study of sperm cell pairs and bundling phenomena. One significant advantage of GA over Fourier analysis is its ability to integrate sperm cell motion data, enabling a more comprehensive analysis. In contrast, Fourier analysis neglects sperm cell motion by transitioning to a sperm-centered coordinate system (material system). In our comparative study, GA consistently outperform the Fourier analysis-based method, yielding a remarkable reduction in fitting error of up to 70% and on average by 45%. An in-depth exploration of the sperm cell motion becomes indispensable in a wide range of applications from complexities of reproductive biology and medicine, to developing soft flagellated microrobots.

The development of the Drag-Free and Attitude Control System is crucial for space-based gravitational wave detectors. The Drag-Free and Attitude Control System includes for spacecraft attitude control, drag-free control, moving optical subassemblies pointing control, and test masses electrostatic control during multiple phases of the mission lifetime. An accurate model of the spacecraft dynamics model is not only a precondition for the control design of Drag-Free and Attitude Control System, but also can serve as a valuable reference to assess the noise budget of gravitational wave detectors. This paper presents a generic, nonlinear mathematical model that describes the multi-body dynamics for the gravitational wave detectors. The model fully considers the couplings between the bodies involved, with a particular focus on the impact of the moving optical subassemblies on the spacecraft attitude. Additionally, a corresponding reduced model for the control design of the science mode is divided. Sports-related concussion (SRC) in adolescent athletes is associated with an increased risk of subsequent lower extremity injury. Neuromuscular training (NMT) has shown promise for reducing lower extremity injuries following SRC, however, neural adaptations in response to changes in lower extremity biomechanics following NMT in athletes with a history of SRC (HxSRC) remains poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify changes in neural activity associated with lower extremity movement adaptations following a six-week NMT intervention in athletes with a HxSRC. Thirty-two right-hand/foot-dominant female adolescent athletes (16 with self-reported HxSRC, 16 age- and anthropometrically-matched controls) completed a bilateral leg press task with 3D motion analysis during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Movement adaptations were defined as a change in frontal and sagittal plane range of motion (ROM) during the fMRI bilateral leg press task. Significant pre- to post-NMT reductions were observed in the non-dominant (left) mean frontal plane ROM. Whole-brain neural correlate analysis revealed that increased cerebellar activity was significantly associated with reduced mean left-knee frontal ROM for matched controls. Exploratory within group analyses identified neural correlates in the postcentral gyrus for the HxSRC group which was associated with reduced mean left-knee frontal plane ROM. These distinct longitudinal changes provide preliminary evidence of differential neural activity associated with NMT to support knee frontal plane control in athletes with and without a HxSRC. Learning through cooperation with conspecifics—'cooperative learning'—is critical to cultural evolution and survival. Recent progress has established that interbrain synchronization (IBS) between individuals predicts success in cooperative learning. However, the likely sources of IBS during learning interactions remain poorly understood. To address this dearth of knowledge, we tested whether movement synchrony serves as an exogenous factor that drives IBS, taking an embodiment perspective. We formed dyads of individuals with varying levels of prior knowledge (high–high (HH), high–low (HL), low–low (LL) dyads) and instructed them to collaboratively analyse an ancient Chinese poem. During the task, we simultaneously recorded their brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy and filmed the entire experiment to parse interpersonal movement synchrony using the computer-vision motion energy analysis. Interestingly, the homogeneous groups (HH and/or LL) exhibited stronger movement synchrony and IBS compared with the heterogeneous group. Importantly, mediation analysis revealed that spontaneous and synchronized body movements between individuals contribute to IBS, hence facilitating learning. This study therefore fills a critical gap in our understanding of how interpersonal transmission of information between individual brains, associated with behavioural entrainment, shapes social learning. Biomechanical trajectories are often routed through a chain of processing steps prior to statistical analysis. As changes in processing parameter values can affect these trajectories, care is required when choosing data processing specifics. The purpose of this Research Note was to demonstrate a simple way to propagate data processing parameter uncertainty to statistical inferences regarding biomechanical trajectories. As an example application. the correlation between foot contact duration and vertical ground reaction force during constant-speed treadmill walking was considered. Uncertainty was modeled using plausible-range uniform distributions in three data processing steps, and Monte Carlo simulation was used to construct probabilistic representations of both individual vertical ground reaction force measurements and the ultimate statistical results. Whereas an initial. plausible set of parameter values yielded a significant correlation between contact duration and late-stance vertical ground reaction force, Monte Carlo simulations revealed strong sensitivity, with 'significance" being reached in fewer than 40% of simulations. with relatively little net effect of parameter uncertainty magnitude. These results indicate that propagating processing parameter uncertainty to statistical results promotes a cautious, nuanced, and robust view of observed effects.
