We demonstrate that a middle sized ring laser gyroscope (RLG) can be a very sensitive and robust instrument for rotational seismology, even if it operates in a quite noisy environment. The RLG has a square cavity, 1.60×1.60 m 2 , and it lies in a plane orthogonal to the Earth's rotational axis. The Fabry-Perot optical cavities along the diagonals of the square were accessed, and their lengths were locked to a reference laser. Through a quite simple locking circuit, we were able to keep the sensor fully operative for 14 days. We verified that the prototype properties are compatible with the seismic requirements. The obtained long term stability is of the order of 3 nanorad/s, and the short term sensitivity is close to 2 n a n o r a d / s ⋅ H z -1/2 . These results are limited only by the noisy environment; our laboratory is located in a building downtown.

Devices as large as ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs) for fundamental physics and geophysics investigation are currently run by means of radio frequency (RF) power supply systems. This is not the standard method to supply a gas laser, which typically is powered by a DC system. In literature, RF power supply lasers were studied several years ago, and to correctly understand the behavior of devices such as RLGs, a more detailed study has been pursued. Detailed study of the radial distribution of the optical gain of a He-Ne discharge cell in function of gas pressure and radio frequency (RF) power supply will be illustrated, discussed, and compared with existing literature. The presented analysis demonstrates that it is possible to optimize ring laser gyroscope (RLG) operation with a proper choice of gas pressure and power level of the RF power supply. Accordingly, we have been able to establish transversal and longitudinal single-mode operation of our prototype GP2.

GINGERino is a large frame laser gyroscope investigating the ground motion in the most inner part of the underground international laboratory of the Gran Sasso, in central Italy. It consists of a square ring laser with a 3.6 m side. Several days of continuous measurements have been collected, with the apparatus running unattended. The power spectral density in the seismic bandwidth is at the level of 10 -10  (rad/s)/Hz. A maximum resolution of 30 prad/s is obtained with an integration time of few hundred seconds. The ring laser routinely detects seismic rotations induced by both regional earthquakes and teleseisms. A broadband seismic station is installed on the same structure of the gyroscope. First analysis of the correlation between the rotational and the translational signal is presented.

He-Ne ring-laser gyroscopes are, at present, the most precise devices for absolute angular velocity measurements. Limitations to their performance come from the nonlinear dynamics of the laser. Following Lamb semiclassical theory, we find a set of critical parameters affecting the time stability of the system. We propose a method for estimating the long-term drift of the laser parameters and for filtering out the laser dynamics effects from the rotation measurement. The parameter estimation procedure, based on the perturbative solutions of the laser dynamics, allows us to apply Kalman filter theory for the estimation of the angular velocity. Results of a comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation and results of a preliminary analysis on experimental data from the ring-laser prototype G-Pisa are shown and discussed.

G-Pisa is an experiment investigating the possibility of operating a high-sensitivity laser gyroscope with area less than 1 m2 for improving the performances of the mirrors suspensions of the gravitational wave antenna Virgo. The experimental set-up consists of a He-Ne ring laser with a 4-mirror square cavity. The laser is pumped by an RF discharge where the RF oscillator includes the laser plasma to reach a better stability. The contrast of the Sagnac fringes is typically above 50% and a stable regime has been reached with the laser operating in either single mode or multimode. The effect of hydrogen contamination on the laser was also checked. A low-frequency sensitivity, below 1 Hz, in the range of 10(-8)(rad/s)/square root(Hz) has been measured.

We propose a method to control the thermal stability of a sapphire dielectric transducer made with 2 dielectric disks separated by a thin gap and resonating in the whispering gallery (WG) modes of the electromagnetic field. The simultaneous measurement of the frequencies of both a WGH mode and a WGE mode allows one to discriminate the frequency shifts due to gap variations from those due to temperature instability. A simple model, valid in quasi-equilibrium conditions, describes the frequency shift of the 2 modes in terms of 4 tuning parameters. A procedure for their direct measurement is presented.

We demonstrate the possibility of using a femtosecond laser to measure with high accuracy the frequency of a far-infrared (FIR) monochromatic source, such as an optically pumped molecular laser, by generating in a suitable mixer a signal in the radio-frequency region at the frequency difference between n steps of a femtosecond comb and the FIR source. All the couples of modes lying a distance of n steps from one another contribute coherently to the heterodyne signal. The technique has been tested up to 670 GHz.

Frequency noise of the local oscillator at even harmonics of the modulation frequency is known to contribute to the short-term instability of passive frequency standards. The mechanism by which this noise transfer takes place in Rb-cell standards is described here in a comprehensive approach that includes both signal theory methods and a time-dependent quantum mechanical analysis. The resulting calculated transfer coefficients for the various even harmonics are discussed in relationship with measured coefficients in an actual experiment.

We have performed zero-field level-crossing resonance measurements (nonlinear Hanle effect) in a metastable Ca atomic beam. By saturating the optical transitions (3)P(1,2) ? (3)S(1), for which the radiative linewidth is 10.5 MHz, we have recorded resonances corresponding to widths of about 31 kHz. The effect has been investigated as a function of the saturating-radiation intensity. The frequency jitter of the laser used in the measurements is about 40 times wider than the recorded widths.

Laser cooling in a Mg atomic beam is reported for the first time to our knowledge. Previous cooling experiments were performed by using visible or infrared lasers. The Mg atoms were cooled by using an intracavity frequency-doubled dye laser at 285 nm to reach the resonant (1)S(0)-(1)P(1) transition. Evidence of laser cooling was obtained even with the limited available laser power ( approximately 1-2 mW).

Evidence of coherence effects has been observed in the Zeeman sublevels by means of nonlinear level crossing in a metastable Ca beam with resonance width 3 orders of magnitude less than the radiative linewidth of the investigated transitions. By using two separate traveling waves, Ramsey-like fringes have been observed. The final measured widths are determined by the transit time, are weakly dependent on the magnetic-field inhomogeneities, and are independent of the natural width of the optical transitions and the laser bandwidth.
