Abstract

The K+ → π+νν decay is characterised by a very precise prediction in the Standard Model (SM). Its branching ratio, which is expected to be less than 10−10 is one of the best candidates to indicate indirect effects of new physics beyond SM at the highest mass scales. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the K+ → π+νν decay with an in-fight technique, never used before for this measurement. NA62 is taking data since in 2016 with the goal to reach the SM sensitivity, an accuracy of the order of 10%. In 2017 it has then collected 10 times more statistics and a similar amount of data is expected from the 2018 run. The preliminary result on K+ → π+νν from the full 2016 data set and prospects for future developments are presented.

Abstract

Fixed target experiments are a particularly useful tool in the search of very weakly coupled particles in the MeV-GeV range that could explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, the nature of the Dark Matter and the origin of the neutrino masses and oscillations. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is currently taking data to measure the rare decay $K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+} v \bar v$. Owing to the high beam-energy and high beam intensity, a long decay volume and a hermetic detector coverage, NA62 also has the opportunity to directly search for a plethora of hidden-sector particles, both in visible or invisible final states. We will detail on status and prospects of these searches, with special focus on those that can be performed with the experiment operated in beam-dump mode.

Abstract

The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector is crucial for the identification of charged particles in the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS. The detector commissioning was completed in 2016 by the precise alignment of mirrors using reconstructed tracks. The alignment procedure and measurement of the basic performance are described. Ring radius resolution, ring centre resolution, single hit resolution and mean number of hits per ring are evaluated for positron tracks. The contribution of the residual mirror misalignment to the performance is calculated., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The precise measurement of the branching ratio of an ultrarare decay K+ → π+vv¯ (~10-10 according to the calculation within the Standard Model) allows to probe New Physics via indirect effects at mass scales higher than those accessible at the LHC. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is aimed at measuring this branching ratio with the 10% precision. To achieve such level of precision, a novel decay-in-flight technique is used. The statistics collected during the first NA62 physics run in 2016 allowed to demonstrate the proof of the experimental method and obtain O(10-10) single event sensitivity. The preliminary results based on the 2016 data set are described.

Abstract

The RICH detector of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is required to suppress \(\mu ^+\) contamination in \(K^+ \rightarrow \pi ^+ \nu \bar{\nu }\) candidate events by a factor at least 100 between 15 and 35 GeV/c momentum, to measure the pion arrival time with \(\sim 100\) ps resolution and to produce a trigger for a charged track. It consists of a 17 m long tank filled with Neon gas at atmospheric pressure. Cerenkov light is reflected by a mosaic of 20 spherical mirrors placed at the downstream end of the vessel and is collected by 1952 photomultipliers placed at the upstream end. The construction of the detector will be described and the performance reached during first runs will be discussed.

Abstract

The use of GPUs to implement general purpose computational tasks, known as GPGPU since fifteen years ago, has reached maturity. Applications take advantage of the parallel architectures of these devices in many different domains. Over the last few years several works have demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of GPU-based systems in the high level trigger of various HEP experiments. On the other hand, the use of GPUs in the DAQ and low level trigger systems, characterized by stringent real-time constraints, poses several challenges. In order to achieve such a goal we devised NaNet, a FPGA-based PCI-Express Network Interface Card design capable of direct (zero-copy) data transferring with CPU and GPU (GPUDirect) while online processing incoming and outgoing data streams. The board provides as well support for multiple link technologies (1/10/40GbE and custom ones). The validity of our approach has been tested in the context of the NA62 CERN experiment, harvesting the computing power of last generation NVIDIA Pascal GPUs and of the FPGA hosted by NaNet to build in real-time refined physics-related primitives for the RICH detector (i.e. the Cerenkov rings parameters) that enable the building of more stringent conditions for data selection in the low level trigger.

Abstract

International audience; The GigaTracker is a lightweight hybrid silicon pixel detector built for the NA62 experiment at CERN, which aims at measuring the branching fraction of the ultra-rare kaon decay $K^+\rightarrow \pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ at the CERN SPS. The detector tracks charged particles in a 75 GeV/$c$ hadron beam with a flux reaching 1.3 MHz/mm$^2$. It consists of three stations, 61$\times$27 mm$^2$ each, which provide single-hit timing with 130 ps resolution. Each station is composed of a 200 $\mu$m thick planar silicon sensor, segmented in 300$\times$300 $\mu$m$^2$ pixels, bump-bonded to 2$\times$5 custom 100 $\mu$m thick ASIC, called TDCPix. Each TDCPix contains 40$\times$45 asynchronous pixels, and is instrumented with 360 pairs of time-to-digital converter channels with 100 ps bin. The three stations are installed in vacuum (about 10$^{-6}$ mbar) and cooled with liquid $\mathrm{C_6F_{14}}$ circulating through micro-channels etched inside silicon plates a few hundred microns thick. The total material budget is less than 0.5% $X_0$ per station. Detector description, operational experience and performance from the NA62 experimental run in 2016, at about 30% the nominal beam intensity, will be presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is currently taking data to measure the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ . The high-intensity setup, trigger flexibility, detector performance and high-efficiency vetoes make NA62 also suitable for direct searches of long-lived, beyond-the-Standard-Model particles, such as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs), Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) and Dark Photons (DPs), moreover, many rare and forbidden decays are studied at NA62. The status of all these searches is reviewed, together with prospects for future data taking at NA62 after the CERN Long Shutdown 2 (LS2).

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS started physics data taking this year with the aim to measure the ultra-rare decay $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$. The experiment consists of a large number of subsystems to reach the goal of 10% accuracy and less than 10% background. The Run Control has been designed to link their trigger and data acquisition system in a single central application easily controllable by non-expert shifters. It has been continuously evolving over time, integrating new equipments, following new requirements and feedback from shifters. Abstract

The time resolution of the prototype counters for a new charged particle hodoscope for the NA62 experiment has been measured. The prototype scintillation counters with dimensions of 90 × 90, 100 × 100, 150 × 150, 180 × 100, and 270 × 100 mm are investigated. Several variants of direct light collection from a scintillator brink and a corner are considered, as well as light collection using wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibers. Silicon photodiodes from the Centre of Perspective Technologies and Apparatuses (CPTA) and SensL, as well as a compact R7400U photomultiplier tube were used as photodetectors. An R7899-20 photomultiplier tube with a high quantum efficiency in the green spectral region is used as a reference counter. The measurements have been taken with cosmic muons and the beam halo of beamline 21 in the zone of the OKA experiment. The time resolution of a 100 × 100 mm cell, averaged over the area, is 590 ± 10 ps in the case of the WLS-fiber readout and 260 ± 25 ps in the case of direct light collection from the scintillator brink.

Abstract

The measurement of ${\rm BR}(K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu})$ constitutes a precision test of the Standard Model, given the extremely theoretically clean environment. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS has been designed to this purpose. Its commissioning phase is complete and the experiment is taking good quality data. A preliminary exploratory analysis, aimed to assess the detector performance and the sensitivity, has been performed using a small fraction of the 2016 data taking.

Abstract

High-intensity proton beams impinging on a fixed target or beam dump allow to probe new physics via the production of new weakly-coupled particles in hadron decays. The CERN SPS provides opportunities to do so with the running NA62 experiment and the planned SHiP experiment. Reconstruction of kaon decay kinematics (beam mode) allows NA62 to probe for the existence of right-handed neutrinos and dark photons with masses below 0.45 GeV. Direct reconstruction of displaced vertices from the decays of new neutral particles (dump mode) will allow NA62 and SHiP to probe right-handed neutrinos with masses up to 5 GeV and mixings down to several orders of magnitude smaller than current constraints, in regions favoured in models which explain at once neutrino masses, matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter.

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected large samples of charged kaon decays in flight with a minimum bias trigger configuration in 2007 and in 2015 using a completely new detector setup. Upper limits on the rate of the charged kaon decay into a muon and a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) obtained from 2007 data and limits for the charged kaon decay into an electron and a HNL obtained from 2015 data, are reported in this proceedings.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is aimed to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu}$ with 10\% accuracy. The experiment operates with a 75 GeV/c high intensity (750 MHz) secondary beam. A new detector, named Charged Particle Hodoscope (CHOD), designed to produce an input signal to the L0 trigger processor for events with charged particles produced in kaon decays, has been assembled, installed, integrated in NA62 Data Acquisition System (DAQ) and commissioned in 2016. Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay K+->pi+ nu nubar with 10% precision. For this purpose the experiment aims to collect of the order of 100 K+->pi+ nu nubar events which would require at least 10^13 K+ decays in the fiducial volume of the detector. The large sample of K+ decays that will be available at NA62 allows the experiment to carry out a rich program for rare and forbidden K+ and pi0 decays, including lepton flavour and/or number violating modes, sterile neutrinos, exotic particles (e.g. Dark Photons). NA62's potential for such searches in K+ and pi0 decays is discussed, with initial sensitivity estimates. In addition, plans for continuing the experiment after 2021 (Long Shutdown 2) are presented, including in particular the possibility to operate in a beam-dump mode for exploring various Dark Matter scenarios.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment aims to measure the B R ( K + → π + ν ν ) with a 10% precision. One of the main backgrounds comes from the decay K + → μ + ν , therefore a highly powerful pion/muon separation is needed. The NA62 RICH, together with the calorimeter system, provides an accurate particle identification which has been essential to obtain the first results of the NA62 K + → π + ν ν analysis, based on 2016 data. Two different algorithms have been exploited which, used in combination, allowed to get a pion reconstruction and identification efficiency of 75%, with a muon suppression factor of about 500, in the momentum range 15–35 GeV/c.

Abstract

The L0TP+ initiative is aimed at the upgrade of the FPGA-based Level-0 Trigger Processor (L0TP) of the NA62 experiment at CERN for the post-LS2 data taking, which is expected to happen at 100% of design beam intensity, corresponding to about 3.3 × 1012 protons per pulse on the beryllium target used to produce the kaons beam. Although tests performed at the end of 2018 showed a substantial robustness of the L0TP system also at full beam intensity, there are several reasons to motivate such an upgrade: i) avoid FPGA platform obsolescence, ii) make room for improvements in the firmware design leveraging a more capable FPGA device, iii) add new functionalities, iv) support the 4 beam intensity increase foreseen in future experiment upgrades. We singled out the Xilinx Virtex UltraScale+ VCU118 development board as the ideal platform for the project. L0TP+ seamless integration into the current NA62 TDAQ system and exact matching of L0TP functionalities represent the main requirements and focus of the project; nevertheless, the final design will include additional features, such as a PCIe RDMA engine to enable processing on CPU and GPU accelerators, and the partial reconfiguration of trigger firmware starting from a high level language description (C/C++). The latter capability is enabled by modern High Level Synthesis (HLS) tools, but to what extent this methodology can be applied to perform complex tasks in the L0 trigger, with its stringent latency requirements and the limits imposed by single FPGA resources, is currently being investigated. As a test case for this scenario we considered the online reconstruction of the RICH detector rings on an HLS generated module, using a dedicated primitives data stream with PM hits IDs. Besides, the chosen platform supports the Virtex Ultrascale+ FPGA wide I/O capabilities, allowing for straightforward integration of primitive streams from additional sub-detectors in order to improve the performance of the trigger.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN aims to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare charged kaon decay K+→π+νν¯ with a 10% accuracy and with a background contamination at the 10% level. Since the branching ratio of this decay is O (10 −10 ), to fulfill such request one of the main backgrounds, the decay K+→μ+ν (BR ~63% ), must be suppressed by a rejection factor of 4×10 −13 (assuming 10% signal acceptance). This can be partially accomplished using a combination of kinematical cuts (8×10 −6 ) and the different power of penetration through matter of pions and muons (10 −5 ). A further 5×10 −3 suppression factor will be provided by a RICH detector, in a momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c. The details of the RICH project as well as the results from test runs performed on a RICH prototype of the same length of the final detector will be presented. The current status of the construction and the description of the final readout and trigger electronics will also be reviewed.

Abstract: The proposal (CERN no. P326) for a new experiment, NA62, is described. This experiment aims to perform a precise measurement of the very rare kaon decay branching ratio. About 80 events with 10% of background are expected to be obtained in two years of data taking. To reconstruct charged pion tracks with high efficiency and high resolution a single magnet spectrometer based on straw tubes, working in vacuum, should be designed and produced. Abstract

The Physics Beyond Colliders study investigates the feasibility of future projects and experiments using CERN facilities. In the scope of this study, a future operation of the NA62 experiment using the existing K12 beam line operated in beam dump mode is discussed. Such a setup allows for a search for dark sector particles, e.g. heavy neutral leptons, dark photons and axions. Production of these hypothetical particles requires the 400GeV/c proton beam extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) to be dumped on a massive dump collimator located in the first part of the K12 beam line. The decay of these dark sector particles, for example, into muons could be detected by the NA62 experimental setup. However, muons created in particle interactions with material and from in-flight decays of secondary hadrons pose a critical background for this kind of experiment. Magnetic sweeping serves as an efficient tool for reducing this background. This paper discusses the simulation studies conducted with the software framework G4beamline to reduce the expected single-muon rate for this experiment. The required beam line modifications, in particular the removal of the beryllium target and repositioning of the dump, have been implemented into this model. A comparison of simulated muon distributions and spectra available experimental data, already taken in test runs, has been made in order to validate the beam line simulation. Finally, additional beam line modifications to further suppress the muon background are elaborated upon. These studies show a potential further reduction of a factor four of the total single-muon rate relative to the nominal setup over the full momentum range, and up to a factor twenty considering only muons with momenta [Formula: see text].

Abstract

The main aim of the NA62 experiment (NA62 Technical Design Report, 〈http://na62.web.cern.ch/NA62/Documents/TD_Full_doc_v1.pdf〉 [1] ) is to study ultra-rare Kaon decays. In order to select rare events over the overwhelming background, central systems with high-performance, high bandwidth, flexibility and configurability are necessary, that minimize dead time while maximizing data collection reliability. The NA62 experiment consists of 12 sub-detector systems and several trigger and control systems, for a total channel count of less than 100,000. The GigaTracKer (GTK) has the largest number of channels (54,000), and the Liquid Krypton (LKr) calorimeter shares with it the largest raw data rate (19 GB/s). The NA62 trigger system works with 3 trigger levels. The first trigger level is based on a hardware central trigger unit, so-called L0 Trigger Processor (L0TP), and Local Trigger Units (LTU), which are all located in the experimental cavern. Other two trigger levels are based on software, and done with a computer farm located on surface. The L0TP receives information from triggering sub-detectors asynchronously via Ethernet; it processes the information, and then transmits a final trigger decision synchronously to each sub-detector through the Trigger and Timing Control (TTC) system. The interface between L0TP and the TTC system, which is used for trigger and clock distribution, is provided by the Local Trigger Unit board (LTU). The LTU can work in two modes: global and stand-alone. In the global mode, the LTU provides an interface between L0TP and TTC system. In the stand-alone mode, the LTU can fully emulate L0TP and so provides an independent way for each sub-detector for testing or calibration purposes. In addition to the emulation functionality, a further functionality is implemented that allows to synchronize the clock of the LTU with the L0TP and the TTC system. For testing and debugging purposes, a Snap Shot Memory (SSM) interface is implemented, that can work both in an input or an output mode. The trigger rates will be permanently monitored by reading counters at regular intervals. This paper describes the overall NA62 trigger system focusing on the setup for the dry and technical runs in 2012.

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. The kaon beam represents a source of tagged neutral pion decays in vacuum. A measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor slope of the neutral pion in the time-like region from $1.05\times10^6$ fully reconstructed $\pi^0$ Dalitz decay is presented. The limits on dark photon production in $\pi^0$ decays from the earlier kaon experiment at CERN, NA48/2, are also reported.

Abstract

The flavor physics sector allows us to explore the possible extensions of the Standard Model (SM) in a complementary approach to the direct searches conducted i.e. at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). New physics contributions at high energy scales can manifest themselves in low energy phenomena provided that the observables are carefully chosen, precisely measured and compared to accurate predictions. A stringent test of the SM predictions is the observation of the rare decay K+ to pi+ nu nubar. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 achieving the commissioning of the detectors and the designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is described and the quality of data collected in view of the final measurement is reported.

Abstract

In Ref [1] we have presented the results of an exploratory lattice QCD computation of the long-distance contribution to the $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay amplitude. In the present paper we describe the details of this calculation, which includes the implementation of a number of novel techniques. The $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay amplitude is dominated by short-distance contributions which can be computed in perturbation theory with the only required non-perturbative input being the relatively well-known form factors of semileptonic kaon decays. The long-distance contributions, which are the target of this work, are expected to be of O(5%) in the branching ratio. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of lattice QCD computations of the $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay amplitude, and in particular of the long-distance component. Though this calculation is performed on a small lattice ($16^3\times32$) and at unphysical pion, kaon and charm quark masses, $m_\pi=420$ MeV, $m_K=563$ MeV and $m_c^{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}(\mbox{2 GeV})=863$ MeV, the techniques presented in this work can readily be applied to a future realistic calculation., Comment: 74 pages, 12 figures

The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS has started its data-taking. Its aim is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay K+ → π+ν ν . In this context, rejecting the background is a crucial topic. One of the main background to the measurement is represented by the K+ → π+π0 decay. In the 1-8.5 mrad decay region this background is rejected by the calorimetric trigger processor (Cal-L0). In this work we present the performance of a soft-core based parallel architecture built on FPGAs for the energy peak reconstruction as an alternative to an implementation completely founded on VHDL language.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment recorded a large sample of K+→μ+νμ decays in 2007. A peak search has been performed in the reconstructed missing mass spectrum. In the absence of a signal, limits in the range 2×10−6 to 10−5 have been set on the squared mixing matrix element |Uμ4|2 between muon and heavy neutrino states, for heavy neutrino masses in the range 300–375 MeV/ c2 . The result extends the range of masses for which upper limits have been set on the value of |Uμ4|2 in previous production search experiments.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. The kaon beam represents a source of tagged neutral pion decays in vacuum. A measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor slope of the neutral pion in the time-like region from ∼1 million fully reconstructed π 0 Dalitz decay is presented. The limits on dark photon production in π 0 decays from the earlier kaon experiment at CERN, NA48/2, are also reported.

Abstract

NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar\nu$ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. For this purpose, innovative techniques have been developed, in particular, in the domain of low-mass tracking devices. Detector construction spanned several years from 2009 to 2014. The collaboration started detector commissioning in 2014 and will collect data until the end of 2018. Abstract

The $\pi\nu\nu$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the $K^+\rightarrow\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay with 10\% precision. NA62 took data in 2015 and 2016 reaching the Standard Model sensitivity. The KOTO experiment in Japan is investigating the decay $K_L\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ reaching a higher background suppression. Both experiments are reviewed, and recent results and prospects are summarised.

Abstract

is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10% precision. NA62 took data in 2014 and 2015 and will accumulate kaon decays till the end of 2018. The quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement will be presented. The experiment is also collecting data to search for exotic processes, like Lepton Flavour and Number violation and Axions.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment collected a large sample of charged kaon decays in 2007 with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons. A measurement of the $\pi^0$ electromagnetic transition form factor slope parameter from $1.11\times10^{6}$ fully reconstructed $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^0_D, \pi^0_D \to e^+ e^-\gamma$ events is reported. The measured value $a = (3.68 \pm 0.57)\times10^{-2}$ is in good agreement with theoretical expectations and previous measurements, and represents the most precise experimental determination of the slope in the time-like momentum transfer region., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; Revised version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The parallel computing power of commercial Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) is exploited to perform real-time ring fitting at the lowest trigger level using information coming from the Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector of the NA62 experiment at CERN. To this purpose, direct GPU communication with a custom FPGA-based board has been used to reduce the data transmission latency. The GPU-based trigger system is currently integrated in the experimental setup of the RICH detector of the NA62 experiment, in order to reconstruct ring-shaped hit patterns. The ring-fitting algorithm running on GPU is fed with raw RICH data only, with no information coming from other detectors, and is able to provide more complex trigger primitives with respect to the simple photodetector hit multiplicity, resulting in a higher selection efficiency. The performance of the system for multi-ring Cherenkov online reconstruction obtained during the NA62 physics run is presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays in ight with a minimum bias trigger in 2007. Upper limits on the rate of the charged kaon decay into a muon and a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) obtained from this data are reported for a range of HNL masses. The NA62 experiment has collected further data in 2015 with a completely new and improved detector. New limits on heavy neutrinos from kaon decays into electron and HNL will be presented.

Abstract

A large RICH detector is used in NA62 to suppress the muon contamination in the charged pion selection by a factor 100 in the momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c. The detector consists of a 17 m long tank (vessel), filled with neon gas at atmospheric pressure. Cherenkov light is reflected by a mosaic of 20 spherical mirrors with 17 m focal length, placed at the downstream end, and collected by 1952 photomultipliers (PMTs) placed at the upstream end. In this paper the characterization of the mirrors before installation and the mirror support system are described. The mirror installation procedure and the laser alignment are also illustrated.

Abstract

The decay is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decays to look for indirect effects of new physics in a complementary way to direct searches at the LHC. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10% precision. NA62 is taking data since 2014, eventually reaching the final designed beam intensity. Using a sample of data taken in 2015, the experimental performances in view of the branching ratio measurement is reported.

Abstract

General-purpose computing on GPUs is emerging as a new paradigm in several fields of science, although so far applications have been tailored to employ GPUs as accelerators in offline computations. With the steady decrease of GPU latencies and the increase in link and memory throughputs, time is ripe for real-time applications using GPUs in high-energy physics data acquisition and trigger systems. We will discuss the use of online parallel computing on GPUs for synchronous low level trigger systems, focusing on tests performed on the trigger of the CERN NA62 experiment. Latencies of all components need analysing, networking being the most critical. To keep it under control, we envisioned NaNet, an FPGA-based PCIe Network Interface Card (NIC) enabling GPUDirect connection. Moreover, we discuss how specific trigger algorithms can be parallelised and thus benefit from a GPU implementation, in terms of increased execution speed. Such improvements are particularly relevant for the foreseen LHC luminosity upgrade where highly selective algorithms will be crucial to maintain sustainable trigger rates with very high pileup.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. The kaon beam represents a source of tagged neutral pion decays in vacuum. A measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor slope of the neutral pion in the time-like region from ∼1 million fully reconstructed π 0 Dalitz decay is presented. The limits on dark photon production in π 0 decays from the earlier kaon experiment at CERN, NA48/2, are also reported.

Abstract

The NA48/2 collaboration has analysed more than one million K ± → π + π − e ± ν decays, resulting in the improved determination of branching fraction by a factor of 3 and high precision form factor measurements. Concurrently, about 45000 K ± → π 0 π 0 e ± ν decays have been analyzed. Background contamination below the percent level and very good π 0 reconstruction allow the first accurate measurement of the branching fraction and decay form factor at the percent level. The achieved precision makes possible the observation of small effects such as π + π − → π 0 π 0 re-scattering. Both K e 4 modes decay properties bring new precise inputs to Low Energy QCD studies and can provide strong tests of ChPT predictions. Future prospects include the observation of several thousand decays in similar muonic modes K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν and K ± → π + π − μ ± ν , that could be studied also in the forthcoming NA62 experiment.

Abstract

NA62 is a fixed target experiment located at the CERN SPS which aims to perform flavour physics studies in the charged kaon sector with an unprecedented precision. Due to the abundance of kaon decays with a po in the final state, NA62 is also a perfect environment to measure the neutral pion characteristics. NA62 collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. We report about the measurement of the po electromagnetic transition form factor slope parameter in the time-like region. Between 2008 and 2014 the NA62 apparatus underwent an intense upgrade phase to improve the physics sensitivity of the experiment to precisely measure the Br (K+ !p+n ¯ n). NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is presented.

Abstract

The main goal of the last generation kaon experiment NA62 at CERN is the measurement of the branching ratio of the ultra-rare decay K+ → π+ vv with 10% uncertainty. One of the key principles of the experiment is the reliable particle identification (PID) which is crucial for the rejection of background decay modes with muons and electrons in the final state, e.g. K+ → μ+ v μ . The RICH detector is designed to suppress muon contamination in the pion sample by the factor of 100 in the momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c, to measure the pion crossing time with a resolution of about 100 ps and to produce a trigger signal for a charged track. The detector was installed in 2014 and has been operating during NA62 data taking periods: a pilot run in 2014, the Commissioning Run in 2015 and Physics Run in 2016. This paper describes the RICH construction and measurements of the detector performance.

Abstract

The GigaTracker magnetic spectrometer (GTK) has been designed for the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS. NA62 aims to measure the branching fraction of the ultra-rare decay K+ → π+ vm[1] [2]. The detector is made of three planes of hybrid pixels, as shown in Figure 1. It has to track particles in a beam with a flux reaching 1.3 MHz/mm2 and provide single-hit timing with 200 ps resolution for a total material budget of less than 0.5% X 0 per station. In order to maintain good timing performance, it is planned to replace the detectors after 100 days of operation, which would correspond to a fluence of 1014 1 MeV eq. n/cm2.

This is the first attempt at building a complete medium-size prototype of this kind (comprising about 8M Logic Elements, distributed on several separate boards), operating it continuously at its limit speed. This study emphasizes logic architecture, correct operation, size, and compatibility with a standard readout framework, to explore its useability as an add-on to a conventional readout system. For this reason we have chosen for implementation a moderate-cost, moderate-speed board already in use in the data acquisition of an existing HEP experiment. Our choice fell on the readout boards currently in use by the NA62 experiment (TEL62), each equipped with 5 Altera Stratix III FPGAs and 4 Gbit/s ethernet interface. We have reprogrammed the board firmware in two different ways, to make the boards behave as the two main blocks of a AR system (switch system, and cellular processor farm). They are interfaced via the front panel, inverting their normal data flow path, by custom interconnection boards, and devoped in internal sytem for continuous feeding of data in order to test them at their maximum achievable speed. We report the results of extensive tests perfomed with this prototype, and discuss their implications regarding the applicability of the “retina architecture” to faster, and custom-developed real-time processors.

Abstract

The goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to collect O(100) events of the ultrarare K $^{+}\rightarrow \pi ^{+}\nu \bar {\nu }$ decay in two years. After a long R&D phase and a successful pilot run in 2014, the first data-taking phase took place in 2015. In this paper the importance of the experiment’s physics goal, as well as the experimental solutions adopted in order to attain it, will be reviewed.

The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is reported. Abstract

The ultra-rare decays K → π ν ν ¯ are excellent processes to make tests of new physics at the highest energy scale complementary to LHC, thanks to their theoretically clean predictions. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS aims to collect about 100 K + → π ′ ν ν ¯ events in two years of data taking, keeping the background at 10% level. A rich physics program is accessible to NA62, in addition to the main goal. A precise measurement of the helicity-suppressed ratio R K of the K ± → e v e and K ± → μ v μ decay rates has already been performed, using data collected at an early stage of the experiment. The result agrees with the Standard Model expectations. A description of the R K measurement, the physics prospects and the status of the NA62 experiment will be presented in this paper.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS aims at measuring-100 events of the very rare decay K + →π + ννˉ (BR∼8.5xlO∼ 10 ). It poses stringent requirements on PID capabilities to reject the overwhelming π + π 0 (63%) and Kμ 2 (21%) backgrounds. The photon veto system must provide a rejection factor of 10∼ 8 on π 0 decays. As a main γ veto detector, the NA48 liquid Kripton calorimeter will be used. To have full geometrical acceptance up to 50 mr, a set of 12 veto stations should be placed along the vacuum decay tank, with an inefficiency 4 in a wide energy range (200 MeV-35 GeV). Good energy resolution (∼10% at 1 GeV) for threshold definition, good time resolution (∼1 ns) to be used at the trigger level, sensitivity to MIP for calibration with muons of the beam halo are needed. A moderate segmentation in the azimuthal angle is desirable, for reducing the counting rate and providing information on the γ direction. We performed an intense R&D program on three solutions: “spaghetti” calorimeter, lead/scintillator sandwich calorimeter, and original re-use of the existing barrel of the OPAL lead-glass e.m. calorimeter. Studies have been performed at the Frascati BTF beam and all three meet the efficiency requirements. The final choice uses a peculiar radial arrangement of lead-glasses in rings. Front-end electronics has been designed to cover the tree orders of magnitude of the signal, contributing to the trigger, and integrated in the general TDAQ, while keeping low cost and simplicity. The first five full veto stations have been constructed. Two tests have been done and problems found fixed. We will discuss about R&D for the technology choice, LAV construction, test beams results and simulation performance.

Abstract

The CERN NA62 experiment aims to measure the ultra-rare charged kaon decay K + → π + νν (branching fraction O(10 -10 )) with a 10% accuracy. The detector must be able to reject background events from decay channels of which the branching fractions are up to 10 orders of magnitude larger than the signal and with similar experimental signature. To totally suppress the main background from K + →μ + ν decay (BR ∼ 63%), NA62 will need a further μ rejection factor better than 5x10 -3 . This will be provided by a gas RICH detector for π/μ separation in a momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c. The details of the RICH project will be described and the results of two beam tests performed at CERN with prototypes will be presented.

Abstract

One of the most challenging detectors of the NA62 experiment is the silicon tracker, called Gigatracker. It consists of three hybrid silicon pixel stations, each one covering an area of 27 mm×60 mm. While the maximum pixel size is fairly large, 300 μ m × 300 μ m the system has to sustain a very high particle rate, 1.5 MHz/mm 2 , which corresponds to 800 MHz for each station. To obtain an efficient tracking with such a high rate the required track timing resolution is 150 ps (rms). Therefore the front-end ASIC should provide for each pixel a 200 ps time measurement capability, thus leading to the requirement of time walk compensation and very compact TDCs. Moreover, Single Event Upset protection has to be implemented in order to protect the digital circuitry. An ASIC prototype has been realized in CMOS 130 nm technology, containing three pixel columns. The chip performs the time walk compensation by a Constant Fraction Discriminator circuit, while the time measurement is performed by a Time to Amplitude Converter based TDC, both of them implemented on each pixel cell. The End of Column circuit containing only digital logic is responsible for the data readout from the pixel cell. The whole chip works with a system clock of 160 MHz and the digital logic is SEU protected by the use of Hamming codes. The detailed architecture of the ASIC prototype and test results are presented.

The matrix hodoscope of the OKA experimental setup and a prototype of the hodoscope for the NA62 experiment are described. The design of both hodoscopes is presented. The requirements for the hodoscope prototype are listed, and the efficiency and the time resolution obtained on the basis of experimental data are quoted.
