Purpose: To assess the safety and effectiveness of polidocanol sclerotherapy combined with transarterial embolization using a liquid adhesive agent (n-butyl cyanoacrylate, NBCA) for treatment of extracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).Materials and Methods: Twenty-three patients with symptomatic AVMs in the head and neck (6), upper (7) and lower extremity (10) with a mean age of 42 years (range 4-74) treated with polidocanol sclerotherapy were retrospectively assessed. AVMs were classified according to the angiographic morphology of the nidus. There were 2 type I, 6 type II, 6 type IIIa and 9 type IIIb. Arterial embolization using NBCA was performed to reduce arterial flow before sclerotherapy. Polidocanol mixed with contrast material or carbon dioxide was delivered by percutaneous direct puncture.Results: Treatment was successfully performed in all patients. In the mean follow-up period of 38 months, symptoms resolved or improved in 20/23 patients (87.0%). AVMs were devascularized 100% in 2 patients, 76-99% in 13, 50-75% in 7 and < 50% in 1. More than 50% devascularization was seen in 22 patients (95.6%). Two (8%) patients had complete remission, 17 (74%) had partial remission and 3 (13%) had no remission. There was no aggravation. Treatment was considered effective (complete and partial remission) in 20 patients (87.0%). Minor complications including localized arterial thrombosis (2) and spontaneously healing skin ulcer (1) were seen in 2 patients (8.7%). There were no major procedure-related complications.Conclusion: Polidocanol sclerotherapy combined with transarterial embolization using NBCA is safe and effective for treating extracranial AVMs with an acceptable risk of minor complications. Background In large-caliber pial macrofistulae (pMF), the combination of high blood flow velocity and large efferent artery diameter makes control over the endovascular vessel occlusion difficult and may result in the inadvertent venous passage of occlusive devices or embolic agents. Case descriptions Patient 1: A 27-year-old man presented with headache and ataxia. An infratentorial pMF supplied by both superior cerebellar arteries with venous ectasia was found. The first treatment attempt using balloons and coils failed since the position of either device could not be controlled because of a distal diameter of the feeding artery of 8 mm. In a second session a pCANvas1 (phenox) was deployed at the level of the arteriovenous connection and adenosine-induced asystole allowed the controlled injection of nBCA/Lipiodol with partial occlusion of the pMF. A remaining arteriovenous shunt was occluded under asystole in a third session. The procedures were well tolerated, the patient returned to normal and DSA confirmed the occlusion of the fistula. Patient 2: A 13-year-old boy with hereditary hemorrhagic teleangiectasia presented with an intracerebral hemorrhage from an aneurysm of the left MCA. Twelve weeks after the aneurysm treatment a feeding MCA branch (diameter 4.5 mm) of a right frontal pMF was catheterized. The macrofistula was occluded by deployment of a pCANvas1, followed by the injection of nBCAl/Lipiodol under adenosine-induced asystole. Conclusion pCANvas1 and adenosine-induced asystole allow a controlled injection of nBCA/Lipiodol for the endovascular occlusion of high-flow pMF without venous passage of the embolic agent. Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is associated with high recurrence rates. Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has emerged as a promising treatment option. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of MMAE for CSDH using liquid embolic agents and compare them with particles.We systematically reviewed all studies describing MMAE for CSDH with liquid embolic agents, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Additionally, we included a cohort of patients from our institution using liquid and particle embolic agents. Data were analyzed using random-effects proportions and comparisons meta-analysis, and statistical heterogeneity was assessed.A total of 18 studies with 507 cases of MMAE with liquid embolic agents (including our institutional experience) were included in the analysis. The success rate was 99% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 98–⁠100%), all complications rate was 1% (95% CI: 0–⁠5%), major complications rate was 0% (95% CI: 0–⁠0%), and mortality rate was 1% (95% CI: 0–⁠6%). The rate of hematoma size reduction was 97% (95% CI: 73–⁠100%), complete resolution 64% (95% CI: 33–⁠87%), radiographic recurrence 3% (95% CI: 1–⁠7%), and reoperation 3% (95% CI: 1–⁠7%). No significant differences in outcomes were found between liquid and particle embolic agents. Sensitivity analyses revealed that liquid embolic agents were associated with lower reoperation rates in upfront MMAE (risk ratio 0.13, 95% CI: 0.02–⁠0.95).MMAE with liquid embolic agents is safe and effective for the treatment of CSDH. Outcomes are comparable to particles, but liquids were associated with a decreased risk of reoperation in upfront MMAE. However, further studies are needed to support our findings. Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of selective arterial embolization with N-2-butyl-cyanoacrylate for aneurysmal bone cysts.Methods: We retrospectively studied 102 patients (72 male, 30 female; mean age, 16 years; range, 3-60 years) with aneurysmal bone cysts treated with embolization with N-2-butyl-cyanoacrylate. Mean follow-up was seven years (range, 3-13 years); no patient was lost to follow-up. We evaluated healing and recurrences of the lesions, complications and cost of the procedures, and recurrences with respect to age and gender of the patients, and size and location of the lesions.Results: Embolization was feasible in 88 patients (86.3%), and not feasible in 14 patients (13.6%) because feeding arteries were not identified or the spinal artery of Adamkiewicz was recognized at the embolization field. Seventy two patients (81.8%) experienced complete healing of their lesions after a single (50 patients, 56.8%), a second (17 patients, 19.3%) or a third embolization (5 patients, 5.7%). Sixteen patients (18.2%) experienced recurrence within four months (range, 3-9 months) after embolization; these patients underwent surgical treatment. Recurrences were more common in patients younger than 15 years of age and cysts larger than 6 cm, without any difference with respect to gender and location. Four patients (4.5%) experienced a complication including skin necrosis, sciatic nerve paresthesias, and femoral artery pseudoaneurysm. The cost estimate was 3000 euro per procedure.Conclusion: Embolization of aneurysmal bone cysts with N-2-butyl-cyanoacrylate is associated with good results and low complication rates, however, experience, technical skills, and knowledge of the vascular anatomy of the area is necessary. The local delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to tumor sites is an effective approach for achieving therapeutic drug concentrations in solid tumors. Injectable implants with the ability to formin siturepresent one of the most promising technologies for intratumoral chemotherapy. However, many issues must be resolved before these implants can be applied in clinical practice. Herein, we report a novel injectablein situ-forming implant system composed ofn-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) and ethyl oleate, and the sol–gel phase transition is activated by anions in body fluids or blood. This newly developed injectable NBCA ethyl oleate implant (INEI) is biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic. INEI solidifies in several seconds after exposure to body fluids or blood, and the implant’sin vivodegradation time can be controlled. In addition, the pore sizes formed by the polymerization of NBCA can be decreased by increasing the NBCA concentration in the implants. Therefore, the drug retention/release time can be adjusted from a few weeks to several months by changing the concentration of NBCA in the implant formulation. Anti-tumor experiments in animal models showed that the average growth inhibition rate of xenografted human breast cancer cells by the paclitaxel-loaded INEI (40% NBCA) was 80%, and they also indicated that tumors in some of the mice were completely eliminated by just a single dosage injection. For the epirubicin-loaded INEI (50% NBCA), the average growth inhibition rate of xenografted human liver cancer cells was 58%. Introduction: Injuries to the internal carotid artery close to the cavernous sinus may result in a fistulous connection between the artery and the venous sinus. Symptoms include pulsatile tinnitus, intracranial bruit, ophthalmological symptoms, and risk of intracerebral hematoma in cases of cortical venous reflux. Previous treatment strategies have included detachable latex balloons, coils, covered stents, or combinations thereof. Today, detachable latex balloons are phased out or withdrawn from several markets. Acrylic glue is a proven stable material used for embolization of arteriovenous shunts. It is a precise, fast, and cost-effective method of endovascular embolization, and it does not cause artifacts on MRI or MRA. Methods: We treated nine patients suffering from direct fistulas with acrylic glue without any permanent neurological adverse events. Results: Four patients were treated with glue embolization of the fistula without occlusion of the parent artery. Five patients with long-lasting symptomatology, large tears in the ICA, and with full collateral cerebral circulation were treated with glue embolization of the fistula and sacrifice of the ICA antero- and retrograde via the ICA and the posterior communicating artery. A case of multiple hepatocellular carcinomas with a severe intrahepatic arterioportal shunt that was successfully embolized with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate with coaxial double-balloon occlusion prior to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization is presented. A proximal balloon positioned at the proper hepatic artery was used for flow control, and a coaxial microballoon, positioned in the closest of three arterial feeding branches to the arterioportal shunt, was used to control the delivery of n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. This coaxial double-balloon technique can prevent proximal embolization and distal migration of n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and enable precise control of the distribution of n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. Endovascular embolization is the primary strategy in the management for vein of Galen malformations (VOGM). However, despite significant advances in endovascular embolization technologies and techniques, VOGMs remain very technically challenging lesions largely due to the high-flow arteriovenous shunts present in these malformations. A variety of advanced flow-control techniques can be implemented to mitigate the risk of venous escape and increase the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment. These techniques include regionally targeted strategies (transvenous embolization and balloon-assisted transarterial embolization) and global flow-control methods (pharmacologic cardiac arrest and rapid ventricular overdrive pacing). Brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) are frequently managed by endovascular embolization with a growing number of centers embolizing with intent to cure. Hemorrhage post-embolization is a severe and poorly understood complication. We present a novel imaging finding associated with post-embolization hemorrhage that has significantly impacted the management of patients at our institution.A retrospective review of all patients undergoing embolization of BAVM at a single center was performed. Post-embolization magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was reviewed for the presence of T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintense vessels (FHVs). Bivariate analysis was performed to determine associations between patient characteristics and risk of hemorrhage.A total of 50 patients underwent 75 embolization procedures. Forty-six post-embolization MRIs were available for review. There were four hemorrhages and 100% of those presented with FHV. In contrast, only 11.9% of embolization procedures without post-procedural hemorrhage had FHVs on MRI. In total, 18.7% of embolizations led to some morbidity or mortality, with only 6.7% leading to permanent morbidity or mortality. In bivariate analysis, only the presence of FHVs was correlated with the risk of hemorrhage (p < 0.05).This is the first series to describe the finding of hyperintense blood vessels on FLAIR imaging after embolization of BAVMs and correlate it with hemorrhage post embolization. Method for finding the attractors is the important object to investigate in the linear/additive CA because it is a primary interest in applications like pattern recognition, pattern classification, design of associative memory and query processing etc. But the research has been so far mostly concentrated around linear/additive CA and it is not enough to modelize the complex real life problem. So nonlinear CA is demanded to devise effective models of the problem and solutions around CA model. The growth in understanding of the pathophysiological relationships between various neurovascular diseases in the past decades has increased the significance and need for endovascular treatment. Consequently, an extraordinary development of different embolic agents was indispensable. The present work first presents the historical milestones in the discovery of various embolic materials used for neurovascular interventions. In the second part, the current endovascular embolization procedures, requiring both liquid and solid embolic agents, are discussed. In some cases and diseases the combination of both may be mandatory. Special emphasis is placed on the consideration needed when choosing appropriate embolic materials, chiefly depending on the goal of the endovascular procedure. Furthermore, the present understanding of the specifics in angioarchitecture and hemodynamics, leading to the most suitable form of access to the vascular lesion, will be covered. Regarding the latter, it is important to note that the aim should always be to achieve optimal superselectivity while being aware of all approaches, ranging from transarterial and transvenous to direct puncture. Purpose: To evaluate the potential usefulness of the balloon-occluded histoacryl glue embolization (B-glue) technique. Materials and methods: Both flow-dependent (no balloon occlusion) and B-glue techniques were used for 24 intercostal arteries of two female swine. N-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) was diluted with lipiodol to a 50 % solution, which was infused after occluding the arteries with microballoon catheters. The embolization range, fragmentation, reflux, adhesion, and glue particle attachment were compared between flow-dependent and B-glue techniques. Results: The B-glue technique was performed in a controlled fashion resulting in successful arterial occlusion without fragmented migration of the injected glue cast. Reflux occurred less frequently with the B-glue technique and was significantly different ( p = 0.012) from that for the flow-dependent technique. Catheters were safely removed from the arterial walls, although in one instance (8.3 %), large glue particles were found to be attached to the catheter tip on removal. Conversely, the flow-dependent technique was more difficult to control and resulted in several instances of higher rates of fragmentation. Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of N-butyl-2-cyano-acrylate (NBCA) for endovascular management of iatrogenic renal-vascular injuries and effects on renal function. Material & Methods Fifteen patients with diagnosed or suspected iatrogenic renal vascular injuries, following percutaneous procedures formed the study group. All the patients were having retroperitoneal hemorrhage or hematuria, with hemodynamic instability at the time of presentation. Pseudoaneurysms, active extravasation of contrast, and the arteriovenous fistula were identified as the cause of bleeding on digital subtraction angiography. Patients underwent trans arterial super-selective embolization. Renal function was monitored using serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and mean blood pressure of all the patients at immediate post-procedure and two months intervals. Results Technical and clinical success was achieved in all the cases using NBCA alone. Patients improved hemodynamically. None of the patients required repeat embolization. No derangement in renal function was observed immediately after the procedure and at interval follow-up. Conclusion NBCA can be used as a safe embolizing agent to provide a quick and effective cure for iatrogenic renovascular injuries. Background: Surgical resection of vertebral hemangiomas in the setting of cord compression can be technically difficult and has the potential for life-threatening hemorrhage. The authors report a case of intraoperative direct intralesional n-butyl-cyanoacrylate embolization for intractable vertebral hemangioma bleeding., Observations: A 53-year-old woman presented for repeat surgery of a residual vertebral hemangioma after a previous debulking, laminectomy, and fixation that were without problems with bleeding. The second surgery was complicated by intractable hemorrhage. Bleeding was controlled with direct intralesional n-butyl-cyanoacrylate embolization after fluoroscopy without accompanying endovascular embolization., Lessons: Aggressive vertebral hemangiomas should ideally be managed in centers where transarterial embolization is available. If such centers are not available or there is still intractable intraoperative bleeding despite preoperative embolization, direct intralesional embolization may be considered as a potential salvage technique.

Endovascular tumor embolization as adjunctive therapy for head and neck cancers is evolving and has become an important part of the tools available for their treatment. Careful study of tumor vascular anatomy and adhering to general principles of intra-arterial therapy can prove this approach to be effective and safe. Various embolic materials are available and can be suited for a given tumor and its vascular supply. This article aims to summarize current methods and agents used in endovascular head and neck tumor embolization and discuss important angiographic and treatment characteristics of selected common head and neck tumors.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the safety and efficiency of the endovascular treatment of spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (SDAVFs). Methods: Between May 1992 and August 2012, 78 patients (59 men) with an angiographically proven SDAVF with pial venous drainage were treated by endovascular embolization ( n = 61) and/or surgery ( n = 31) at three German hospitals by a single team of physicians and according to a uniform therapeutic concept. Results: Endovascular treatment resulted in a complete occlusion of the fistula in 47 cases (77 %). After failed embolization with residual shunt, 14 DAVFs were surgically cured (23 % failure rate). We had one permanent and two minor complications after endovascular therapy. Within a postoperative period of 2 weeks, 73.6 % of patients improved in gait disability, 51.1 % in micturition function, and 70.5 % in paresthesia of the lower extremities. Long-term follow-up data showed further improvement of clinical symptoms confirmed by normalization or resolution of spinal changes on MRI. Conclusions: An interdisciplinary approach to the management of SDAVFs is mandatory. Patients without a common origin of arteries supplying the spinal cord and the dural fistula, and without a stenosis or occlusion of the concerning segmental artery are potential candidates for endovascular treatment (diluted n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate). Symptomatic slow-flow vascular malformations include venous malformations and lymphatic malformations, as well as combined anomalies. Endovascular therapy, consisting mainly of intralesional sclerosant injection, is now accepted as the primary treatment for most of these lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography supplement physical examination for diagnosis and assessment of the extent of malformation. Endovascular treatment is usually carried out under general anesthesia. Sclerosants for venous malformations include ethanol, 3% sodium tetradecyl sulfate, and bleomycin. Lymphatic malformations can be injected with doxycycline, bleomycin, OK-432, or other sclerosants. Complications of sclerotherapy include tissue necrosis, peripheral nerve injury, hemoglobinuria, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Infectious intracranial aneurysms (IIA) are rare but a considerable source of morbidity and mortality as a result of rupture. Most patients with these lesions have considerable medical comorbidities, making endovascular approaches a crucial modality in their treatment armamentarium. Contributing our own case, we performed a comprehensive review of the literature to illustrate overall results and outcomes for patients with IIA treated with endovascular approaches. Incorporating our own case, we found 65 patients harboring 72 IIA across 31 reports. Fifty-one were treated via parent artery occlusion (71 %), 17 via direct aneurysm embolization (24 %), two via stent-coiling (3 %), and two with stent monotherapy (3 %). Twenty-nine IIAs were treated with n-butylcyanoacrylate (NBCA) (40 %), 25 with coils (35 %), seven with Onyx or ethylene vinyl alcohol (10 %), five with detachable balloons (7 %), four with stents (6 %), and one with autologous clot (1 %). One case of incomplete aneurysm occlusion and two cases of recanalization were reported. Six symptomatic periprocedural ischemic events were reported (9 %), with only three resulting in permanent sequelae (5 %). No infectious complications were reported. Incorporating the natural history of the disease, 28 patients were neurologically intact (43 %), while seven had died at the time of follow-up (11 %). Endovascular treatment of ruptured, symptomatic, or enlarging IIA is an excellent treatment modality with high occlusion rates and low procedure-related complication rates. Distal IIA are more often treated with parent artery occlusion, in our hands, preferentially with Onyx, while proximal lesions may be treated with direct stent-coiling or even flow-diverting stent monotherapy. Intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have a cumulative risk of hemorrhage and refractory seizures. Pre-surgical Onyx embolization of cerebral AVMs improves clinical outcome. A 45-year-old man with a history of seizures was diagnosed with a Spetzler-Martin grade 4 AVM in the right occipital lobe. As per initial assessment, three to four sessions were required for adequate devascularization of the AVM before offering either surgery or gamma knife treatment. We achieved 10% and 70% devascularization in the first and second stage Onyx18 embolization respectively. Subsequent bilateral internal carotid, external carotid, vertebral and right posterior cerebral artery superselective angiography performed six weeks after the second stage of embolization demonstrated unexpected complete angiographic cure of the AVM. We retrospectively studied 31 patients with painful bone (15 patients) and soft-tissue (16 patients) hemangiomas treated with 39 embolizations using N-2-butyl cyanoacrylate from 2003 to 2010. The mean tumor size before embolization was 6 cm for bone and 7 cm for soft-tissue hemangiomas. The technique of embolization was the same for bone and soft-tissue lesions. Preoperative embolization was done in six patients, while the remaining patients had embolization as only treatment. The mean follow-up was 47 months (11-89 months). The clinical and imaging effect of treatment was evaluated at follow-up with a pain score scale, tumor size, and ossification. In four patients, embolization was not feasible because of the inability to catheterize and low blood flow of the feeding vessels. Nine patients with bone and 10 with soft-tissue hemangiomas experienced complete pain relief. Four patients with bone and four with soft-tissue hemangiomas experienced recurrence of pain and were treated with repeat embolization. Re-recurrences were not observed in any of the patients with soft-tissue hemangiomas until the period of this study. Ossification and tumor size reduction were higher for bone hemangiomas. Abstract: A 29-year-old woman with placenta increta with hemorrhage underwent uterine artery embolization using 12.5% NBCA (N-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate) diluted with iodized oil (Lipiodol). Complete resolution of placenta increta without performing curettage was obtained. The uterus returned to its normal shape, with restored endometrium, junctional zone, and myometrium. Menstruation resumed after 3 months. In cases of retained placenta due to placenta accreta, and even those with placenta increta, uterine artery embolization using NBCA is a useful treatment. The purpose of this article is to describe the indications for use of n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) in abdominal and pelvic embolotherapy, appropriate techniques for NBCA embolotherapy, and NBCA-related complications and their management. NBCA embolotherapy is a feasible and effective method for treating a variety of abdominal and pelvic vascular lesions or tumors; however, the techniques suitable for each case and knowledge of NBCA-related complications are essential to achieve favorable outcomes. The toxic effects of onyx, its solvent dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), and n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) were evaluated after infusion into the subaracnoid space of a rabbit model. Each of the two various concentrations of onyx, pure DMSO, NBCA, and normal saline solution were percutaneously infused into the pontocerebellar cisternae of 39 domestic male albino rabbits, after which, the brain stems and medial cerebellar tissues were harvested for biochemical and histopathological studies. The specimens infused in various concentration of onyx, DMSO, and NBCA showed neural tissue necrosis and edema with inflammatory cell infitration in the acute stage. Although the mean values of the lipid peroxidase in the control, saline, and NBCA groups were found to be almost similar, they were found to be low in the onyx and DMSO groups. This experimental study suggests that NBCA, and various concentrations of onyx and DMSO have toxic effects on the neural tissues of rabbits when infused into the subarachnoid space. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of transcatheter embolization for pseudoaneurysms of peripheral arteries with n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA). From November 2000 to February 2008, 17 patients with 18 pseudoaneurysms were treated by transcatheter embolization at our affiliated hospitals. The locations of the pseudoaneurysms were right hepatic artery (n=3), renal artery (n=5), splenic artery (n=2), gastroduodenal artery (n=2), common hepatic artery (n=1), pancreatic arcade (n=1), external iliac artery (n=1), internal iliac artery (n=1), internal thoracic artery (n=1), and left gastric artery (n=1). We assessed technical success rate, embolization methods, and clinical course in this study. The technical success rate was 94.4% (17/18 cases). Embolization methods were isolation (n=17) and packing (n=1). Only NBCA was used in 14 cases, both coils and NBCA were used in four cases. Six patients were in shock prior to the procedure, but all patients recovered immediately after embolization procedure including transfusion. None of the patients died of procedure-related factors or had notable postoperative complications, but three patients died within a week of the procedure because of deterioration of the underlying disease. The study's purpose was to assess the safety, feasibility and efficiency of selective arterial embolization (SAE) using N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) glue before percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) of renal malignancies in patients whose tumor characteristics and/or comorbidities resulted in an unacceptable risk of bleeding. In this single-center retrospective study of 19 consecutive high-risk patients (median age, 74 years) with renal malignancies managed in 2017–2020 by SAE with NBCA followed by PCA, data about patients, tumor and procedures characteristics, complications, renal function and hemoglobin concentration before and after treatment, as well as recurrence were collected. Charlson comorbidity index was ≥4 in 89.5% of patients. Ten patients were treated by antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy. Median tumor largest diameter was 3.75 cm (range, 1–6.5 cm) and R.E.N.A.L. nephrometry score was ≥7 in 80%, indicating substantial tumor complexity. No major complications were recorded and minor complications occurred in 7 patients. No residual tumor was found at 6-week imaging follow-up in 18/19 patients. Tumor recurrence was visible in 1/16 patients at 6-month imaging follow-up. No significant difference was found for renal function after treatment (p = 0.07), whereas significant decrease in hemoglobin concentration was noted (p = 0.00004), although it was relevant for only one patient who required only blood transfusion and no further intervention. Surgical treatment or varicocele embolization (VE) with sclerosing or mechanical embolic agents have been shown to improve the semen parameters of infertile men. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of VE using N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) glue on semen parameters in infertile men. From January 2014 to June 2018, infertile adult patients with stage 3 varicocele and an initial semen analysis showing at least one abnormal semen parameter, and who were successfully embolized with NBCA Glubran®2 glue, were retrospectively recruited. The availability of a second semen analysis after VE was mandatory for patient inclusion. The primary endpoint was the change in total sperm number (TSN) after VE. The other parameters of interest were progressive and total sperm motilities (Smot) at 1 h (H1), sperm vitality (SV) and morphology (SMor). One hundred and two patients were included. Eight patients presented null TSN before and after VE. Among the remaining 94 patients, a significant improvement in the median TSN after VE was shown (31.79 × 106/ejaculate [IQR: 11.10–127.40 × 106/ejaculate] versus 62.24 × 106/ejaculate [IQR: 17.90–201.60 × 106/ejaculate], p = 0.0295). Significant improvement in TSN was found for the 60 oligo- or azoospermic patients (p = 0.0007), whereas no significant change was found for the 42 patients with normal initial TSN (p = 0.49). Other parameters, such as progressive and total SMot, SV and SMor, also significantly improved after VE (p = 0.0003, 0.0013, 0.0356 and 0.007, respectively). Pulmonary artery aneurysms due to Behçet's disease are mainly seen in young males and very rarely in females. To our knowledge there are only 10 cases reported in the related literature. Emergent transcatheter embolization was performed in a female patient with a known history of Behçet's disease in whom massive hemoptysis developed because of rupture of a giant pulmonary artery aneurysm. At 6-month follow-up, transformation of the aneurysm sac into an air cavity was detected. To our knowledge, such a transformation has never been reported in the literature before. The experimental data have been collected from a high-resolution X-ray diffraction pattern and the theoretical analyses have been carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) based on B3LYP level at 6-31++G (d, p) by Gaussian program, knowing that every single vibration frequency is awarded on the potential energy distribution (PED) base and electronic transitions are computed according to the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The non-linear optical parameters (NLO) have similarly been investigated at the same level theory. The energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the global chemical reactivity descriptors (GCRD) of the title molecule were investigated by using DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G (d, p) method. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) is simulated to look for better reactive sites for electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks. To ascertain the contribution of intermolecular interactions, Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plots were carried out. Cyanoacrylates were first used for medical purposes during World War II to close skin wounds. Over time, medical applications were developed, specifically in the vascular field. Uses now range from extravascular instillation in vascular grafting to intravascular injection for embolization. These applications were made possible by the conduct of numerous preclinical studies involving a variety of tests and outcome measures, including angiographic and histological criteria. Cyanoacrylates were first harshly criticized by vascular surgeons, chiefly due to their fast and irreversible polymerization. Over the past five years, however, cyanoacrylates have earned an established place in endovascular interventional radiology. Given the irreversible effects of cyanoacrylates, studies in animal models are ethically acceptable only if supported by reliable preliminary data. Many animal studies of cyanoacrylates involved the experimental creation of aneurysms or arteriovenous fistulas, whose treatment by endovascular embolization was then assessed. In clinical practice, however, injection into non-modified arteries may be desirable, for instance, to deprive a tumor of its vascular supply. To help investigators in this field select the animal models and procedures that are most appropriate for their objectives, we have reviewed all published in vivo animal studies that involved the injection of cyanoacrylates into non-modified arteries to discuss their main characteristics and endpoints.
