Abstract

For higher density MO recording, a magnetic domain expansion readout method named MAMMOS has been proposed [1]. Herein we report a novel MAMMOS scheme using an in-plane to perpendicular magnetization changing effect. Expansion readout has been achieved by both a magnetic field modulation method and a light intensity modulation method. A clearly amplified readout signal was reproduced from repetition of 0.2 [Mu] m packed marks.

Abstract

The MAMMOS (magnetic amplifying magneto-optical system) read-out is achieved by applying an alternating external magnetic field for domain expansion and collapse processes. Since the read-out magnetic domain size is expanded by a magnetic field, a strong enhancement in the amplitude of the read-out signal is expected. The read-out laser power dependence of the MAMMOS signal was measured, and the resolution was estimated empirically. Applying an alternating magnetic field with suitable intensity, MAMMOS readout was realized for a certain range of read-out laser power. The resolution and the margin of magnetic field depended on the laser power. Even at a 0.2 [[micro]meter] domain size, its signal was recognizable without interference at the optimum laser power. A C/N level of over 50 dB was obtained for a 0.2 [[micro]meter] domain size. Index terms - CNR, domain expansion, magneto-optical disk, resolution.

Abstract

Magnetic Multi-Valued (MMV) recording process is studied by numerical simulation including thermomagnetic effect. A medium, which consists of PtCo capping layer coupled to TbFeCo recording layer, switches the signal of Kerr rotation angle responding to the external field in four levels. The time evolution of generated pattern of recording mark is calculated by extending the previous magneto-optical (MO) recording simulation for single layer system.

Abstract

New magnetic configurations in 2D and 3D artificial lattices are studied by solving the non-linear equation based on the classical Heisenberg models for 2D and 3D artificial lattices. The results indicate strong possibility to be used as an ultra-high density magnetic recording media achieved by magnetic multi-valued (MMV) recording. The MMV states are based on the magnetic anisotropic configurations in 2D and 3D artificial lattices. In this paper, the magnetic properties of these artificial lattices and the density of MMV recording are discussed.

Natural polymers have been revisited as a material which may contribute to a low-carbon society. However, the utilization of such natural polymers is quite limited even now. Previously, we have revealed that double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is one of promising resources as a structural material having peculiar tensile properties. A self-supported film of DNA prepared by a solvent-casting method can be regulated from glassy to rubbery state via semicrystalline-like by its water content. However, there is a problem that the water evaporation causes changing the tensile properties of the films in a short time. To overcome this problem, in this study, we focused on hydrated ionic liquid as a non-volatile substance to maintain the tensile properties of DNA films for a long time. Abstract

Atomic force microscope (AFM) was employed to solve deformation mechanisms of thermoplastic valcanizates (TPVs). It can visualize their mechanical properties in nano-scale by giving Young’s modulus mapping. Abstract

Tumor size is important when distinguishing T1 renal cell carcinoma (RCC) from T2 disease. However, further details of the relationship between tumor size and TNM classifications have not been reported. In this study, we evaluated the correlation between the size and TNM stage of RCC and compared it with correlations for tumor volume. We retrospectively studied 241 patients with RCC and obtained data on size and TNM stage from surgical records. To assess the correlation of these variables with involvement of the renal capsule, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis, the area under the corresponding receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve was calculated. The statistical significance of differences between these ROC curves was also studied. With respect to involvement of the renal capsule, the areas under the ROC curves for tumor size and volume were 0.796 and 0.800, respectively. There was no significant difference between tumor size and tumor volume. With lymph node metastasis, the areas for tumor size and volume were 0.751 and 0.757, respectively. With distant metastasis they were 0.693 and 0.722, respectively. The areas for tumor volume were larger than those for tumor size, but there were no significant differences between these 2 variables. By using a cutoff value of 5 cm for tumor size and 65 mL for tumor volume, we obtained a high sensitivity and specificity in detecting renal capsular invasion. Tumor size and volume are both sensitive and specific indices of renal capsular invasion. These variables, obtained before surgery by imaging modalities, could be useful for preoperative staging of RCC, especially for T staging.
