Risk and disaster management involves a large amount of data that needs to be collected, processed, and analyzed to become information that results, therefore, in measures to reduce risk and damage. Therefore, this study aims to describe how the macro processes of risk and disaster management are supported using Geographic Information Systems in the Web platform (SIG Web). More specifically, the use of SIG Web VICON as an alternative to improve risk and disaster management actions, especially in the context of disaster risk assessment and communication by the protection and civil defense agencies in Brazil. The contribution of information that the tool provides for the identification, monitoring of threats, response actions, and characterization of vulnerable populations, makes VICON an instrument with high potential to support reducing the impacts caused by disasters.

The immune system plays a critical role in modulating cancer development and progression. Polymorphisms in key genes involved in immune responses are known to affect susceptibility to cancer. Here, we analyzed 35 genes to evaluate the association between variants of genes involved in immune responses and prostate cancer risk. Thirty-five genes were analyzed in 47 patients with prostate cancer and 43 healthy controls using next-generation sequencing. Allelic and genotype frequencies were calculated in both cohorts, and a generalized linear mixed model was applied to test the relationship between prostate cancer risk and nucleotide substitution. Odds ratios were calculated to describe the association between each single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and prostate cancer risk. Significant changes in allelic and genotypic distributions were observed for IL4R, IL12RB1, IL12RB2, IL6, TMPRSS2, and ACE2. Furthermore, a generalized linear mixed model identified statistically significant associations between prostate cancer risk and SNPs in IL12RB2, IL13, IL17A, IL4R, MAPT, and TFNRS1B. Finally, a statistically significant association was observed between IL2RA and TNFRSF1B and Gleason scores, and between SLC11A1, TNFRSF1B and PSA values. We identified SNPs in inflammation and two prostate cancer-associated genes. Our results provide new insights into the immunogenetic landscape of prostate cancer and the impact that SNPs on immune genes may have on affecting the susceptibility to prostate cancer.

Hibiscus tiliaceus L. is a seaside plant that has several benefits, one of which is as a producer of paper fiber. H. tiliaceus need a better nutrient to grow on coastal land that is still constrained by the high level of salinity. By this, a special treatment is needed to support its growth. One of them is the application of mycorrhizal inoculants. Mycorrhizae is known as one of the fungi that can help plants tolerate salinity. The aims of the research were to determine the effect of AMF inoculants and determine the best doses of AMF to the seedling growth. The research used completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were (A) without AMF (control), (B) inoculation AMF 10 g/plant, (C) inoculation AMF 15 g/plant, (D) inoculation AMF 20 g/plant and (E) inoculation AMF 25 g/plant. The result showed that AMF can infect the roots of hibiscus seedlings with an infection degree of 18-34%. However, it has not been able to have a significant effect on shoot length, number of leaves, dry weight of root, and dry weight of shoot.

Estimating the effects of international migration on left-behind children's educational attainment is complicated by the potential offsetting effects of fathers' absences and household remittances. Most research has not separated these aspects of international migration on children's human capital outcomes. We address this deficiency by using instrumental variables to isolate the effects of fathers' international migration absences from international household remittances on student enrollment and grade progression in Guatemala. Results indicate that fathers' absences and household international remittances are negatively related to enrollment, providing evidence for a culture of migration effect. For students who remain in school, household international remittances neutralize the harmful influence of fathers' absences on grade progression.

Historically, Guatemalans have suffered high rates of poverty and malnutrition while nearly ten percent of their population resides abroad. Many Guatemalan parents use economic migration, mainly international migration to the United States, as a means to improve the human capital prospects of their children. However, as this investigation shows, the timing of migration events in relation to left-behind children's ages has important, often negative and likely permanent, repercussions on the physical development of their children. To illustrate these dynamics, this investigation uses an instrumental variables framework to disentangle the countervailing effects of Guatemalan fathers' absences due to migration from concomitant remittances on left-behind children's growth outcomes. Based on national-level data collected in 2000, the investigation reveals that the international migration of a father in the previous year is correlated with a 22.1% lower length/height-for-age z-score for the average left-behind child aged ≤ 3. In contrast, the receipt of remittance income has no influence on the physical stature of a child, which may indicate that migrant fathers with young children are not able to achieve economic success soon enough during their ventures abroad to fully ameliorate the harmful effects caused by their absences.

Neurological diseases remain a major concern due to the high world mortality rate and the absence of appropriate therapies to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Therefore, the major focus is on the development of such strategies that not only enhance the efficacy of drugs but also increase their permeability in the BBB. Currently, nano-scale materials seem to be an appropriate approach to treating neurological diseases based on their drug-loading capacity, reduced toxicity, targeted delivery, and enhanced therapeutic effect. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient and has been of remarkable interest owing to its essential role in the physiological activity of the nervous system, i.e., signal transmission, memory, coordination, and locomotor activity. A deficiency of Se leads to various neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, owing to the neuroprotective role of Se (selenium) nanoparticles (SeNPs) are of particular interest to treat neurological diseases. To date, many studies investigate the role of altered microbiota with neurological diseases; thus, the current review focused not only on the recent advancement in the field of nanotechnology, considering SeNPs to cure neurological diseases, but also on investigating the potential role of SeNPs in altered microbiota.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder involving the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn)/Lewy bodies in the brain and -enteric nervous system. The etiology of the disease is not well understood, but bacterial and viral infections may contribute to the pathogenesis of PD. It has been suggested that the gastrointestinal (GI) complications observed in PD patients may arise from bacterial dysbiosis, leading to curli/α-syn deposits in the enteric nervous system. Enteric bacteria secrete curli, a functional amyloid peptide involved in adhesion to surfaces, cell invasion, and biofilm formation. However, these bacterial amyloids can initiate additional α-syn deposits through immune system activation and cross-seeding. In this study, we investigate the humoral response against α-syn, curli peptides, and various bacterial and viral immunogen peptides in PD patients, and compare them with those in healthy controls (HCs). Polyclonal IgG antibodies (Abs) were detected against peptides derived from α-syn (α-syn100–114), curli (Curli133–141), Porphyromonas gingivalis Pg (RgpA800–812, Kpg328–339), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (LtxA1429–445, LtxA264–80), Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP3865c125–133, MAP1,4-a-gbp157–173 and MAP_402718–32), Epstein–Barr virus (EBNA1400–413, BOLF1305–320), and Herpes Simplex virus 1 (UI4222–36), as investigated by indirect ELISA of 51 serum samples from PD and 58 sex and age-matched HCs. Significant differences in OD (optical density) values and Abs positivity between PD patients and HCs were observed for Kpg (82.3% vs. 10.3%), followed by RgpA (60.7% vs. 24.1%), curli (51% vs. 22.4%), and UI42 (43.1% vs. 25.8%) in PD, compared to HCs sera (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found in the ODs obtained from other tested peptides in PD patients, compared to HCs. Significant positive correlations between OD values obtained by ELISA were observed for UI42 and curli (r = 0.811, p < 0.0001), Kpg and RgpA (r = 0.659, p < 0.0001), followed by LtxA1 and LtxA2 (r = 0.653, p < 0.0001). The correlation between the HY scale (Hoehn and Yahr Scale) and LtxA1 (r = 0.306, p < 0.028) and HY and Kpg (r = 0.290, p < 0.038) were significantly positive. This study reports a significantly increased humoral response against curli, Pg, and HSV-1 in PD patients, implying that they could be important factors in the pathogenesis of the disease. In addition, the high positive correlation between UI42 and curli may suggest the involvement of HSV-1 in GI dysbiosis. Therefore, the role of each individual pathogen and curli in PD needs to be further investigated.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins are a wide family of bacterial exotoxins with the capacity to activate as much as 20% of the host T cells, which is why they were called superantigens. Superantigens (SAgs) can cause multiple diseases in humans and cattle, ranging from mild to life-threatening infections. Almost all S. aureus isolates encode at least one of these toxins, though there is no complete knowledge about how their production is triggered. One of the main problems with the available evidence for these toxins is that most studies have been conducted with a few superantigens; however, the resulting characteristics are attributed to the whole group. Although these toxins share homology and a two-domain structure organization, the similarity ratio varies from 20 to 89% among different SAgs, implying wide heterogeneity. Furthermore, every attempt to structurally classify these proteins has failed to answer differential biological functionalities. Taking these concerns into account, it might not be appropriate to extrapolate all the information that is currently available to every staphylococcal SAg. Here, we aimed to gather the available information about all staphylococcal SAgs, considering their functions and pathogenicity, their ability to interact with the immune system as well as their capacity to be used as immunotherapeutic agents, resembling the two faces of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Consensus linkage maps are important tools in crop genomics. We have assembled a high-density tetraploid wheat consensus map by integrating 13 data sets from independent biparental populations involving durum wheat cultivars (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum), cultivated emmer (T. turgidum ssp. dicoccum) and their ancestor (wild emmer, T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides). The consensus map harboured 30 144 markers (including 26 626 SNPs and 791 SSRs) half of which were present in at least two component maps. The final map spanned 2631 cM of all 14 durum wheat chromosomes and, differently from the individual component maps, all markers fell within the 14 linkage groups. Marker density per genetic distance unit peaked at centromeric regions, likely due to a combination of low recombination rate in the centromeric regions and even gene distribution along the chromosomes. Comparisons with bread wheat indicated fewer regions with recombination suppression, making this consensus map valuable for mapping in the A and B genomes of both durum and bread wheat. Sequence similarity analysis allowed us to relate mapped gene-derived SNPs to chromosome-specific transcripts. Dense patterns of homeologous relationships have been established between the A- and B-genome maps and between nonsyntenic homeologous chromosome regions as well, the latter tracing to ancient translocation events. The gene-based homeologous relationships are valuable to infer the map location of homeologs of target loci/QTLs. Because most SNP and SSR markers were previously mapped in bread wheat, this consensus map will facilitate a more effective integration and exploitation of genes and QTL for wheat breeding purposes.

BackgroundEmpirical research describes retirement migration to Mexico as a viable option for some older Americans. However, far less research examines this phenomenon among Mexican immigrants in the United States. The literature that does address this topic treats international migration as a singular occurrence and does not examine the possibility of return and subsequent reentry between countries. This omission creates an important gap in our knowledge of international retirement migration considering the strong transnational ties that Mexican immigrants maintain to the home and destination countries.ObjectiveUsing a multistate life table approach, this study examines the rate of return to Mexico and reentry back into the United States among Mexican males aged 50 and older with U.S. migration experience, as well as the number of years spent in both countries.ResultsResults show that the rate of reentry from Mexico into the United States declined from 3.33% at age 50-54 to less than 1% at age 70 and older (p-value

Several studies suggested that male's diet affects fertility. This cross-sectional analysis from a prospective cohort study aims to explore the relation between antioxidants intake and sperm parameters in sub-fertile couples referring to a Fertility center. Socio-demographic characteristics, health history, lifestyle habits, and diet information were obtained. A semen sample was analyzed to proceed with assisted reproduction. Three hundred and twenty-three men were enrolled: 19.1% had semen volume (SV) < 1.5 mL, 31.4% sperm concentration (SC) < 15.0 mil/mL, 26.8% sperm motility < 32%, and 33.0% had total sperm count (TSC) < 39.0 mil. Higher levels of α-carotene were associated to lower risk of low SC [4th vs. 1st quartile, adjusted OR (aOR) 0.43, 95% CI 0.20–0.91) and low TSC (aOR 0.46, 95% CI 0.22–0.95). Higher intake of β-carotene was inversely associated with risk of low TSC. Lycopene intake was associated with higher risk for these conditions (aOR 2.46, 95%CI 1.01–5.98, SC), and (aOR 3.11, 95%CI 1.29–7.50, TSC). Risk of low semen volume was lower in men with higher level of vitamin D intake (aOR 0.25, 95%CI 0.09–0.66)]. Further research, especially, well-designed randomized clinical trials (RCT), is needed to understand how diet modifications may have a role in modulating male fertility and fecundability.

Vicia sativa is one of the most important crops for livestock feed. Pods from Vicia sativa seed production are usually discarded. The objective of this study was to report the nutritional value of Vicia sativa pods. Report of the bromatological analysis was 17.58% for crude protein, 44.96% for neutral detergent fiber, and 55.81% for in vitro dry matter digestibility. Estimates of the energy value on dry matter basis (Mcal kg–1) were made for digestible and metabolizable energy, with values of 2.46 and 2.01, respectively. Vicia sativa pods promise enormous potential as a protein supplement on livestock diets when other sources are not available.

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) have been thought of as silent passengers within our genomes, but their reactivation has been linked with several autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1DM). In order to evaluate the potential role of HERVs, in addition to the recognized role of HERV-W, we focused on the debated role of the HERV-K family in T1DM. Therefore, we performed a serological evaluation of IgG antibodies against HERV-K Env epitope (HERV-K Env19–37) in comparison to an important β-cellular autoimmunity biomarker, ZnT8, from plasma samples of Sardinian children at the onset of T1DM, different T1DM groups (1–5 and 6–12 years since diagnosis), and healthy controls (HCs), by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A significant antibody response was observed against HERV-K Env19–37 (p < 0.0001) in T1DM patients compared to HCs, and significantly higher IgG responses were detected in the group at the onset compared to the other T1DM groups and HCs. Unlike the trend of the β-cellular autoimmunity autoantibodies, for HERV-K Env antibodies we observed positive values that persist over time up to 5 years since the onset of T1DM. Our results add new evidence about the presence of antibodies against HERV-K in T1DM, but further investigations are necessary to relate these results with the established role of HERVs, considering the contrasting results for HERV-K.

A Covid-19 tem se revelado um problema emergencial de importância mundial. O estudo apresentado neste artigo tem como objetivo discutir a percepção e comunicação da população brasileira sobre os riscos de contrair a doença. Foi conduzido um estudo transversal envolvendo indivíduos adultos maiores de 18 anos residentes em todo o território brasileiro que responderam a um questionário eletrônico (adaptado de Betsch), entre os dias 4 e 15 de maio de 2020, sobre percepção e comunicação dos riscos de infecção pelo coronavírus. No estudo, foram incluídos 1.291 participantes, sendo em sua maioria servidores públicos (56,2%, n=725). Também constituíram maioria os pertencentes ao sexo feminino (62,9%, n=812) e os que têm nível superior (91,5%, n=1181). Já os que residem no estado do Paraná, apesar de representarem menos da metade dos entrevistados (35,9%, n=464), predominaram se comparados aos que habitam nas demais unidades federativas. Grande parte dos participantes tomou conhecimento da pandemia e obteve informações sobre ela a partir de diferentes fontes: entre elas, especialmente televisão (18,9%), sites ou portais de notícias (16,6%), mídias sociais (16,5%), jornais impressos (11,2%), profissionais de saúde (8,9%), familiares e amigos (8%) e mecanismos de pesquisa na internet (6,3%). Em relação ao grau de onfiabilidade das fontes de informação, a maioria dos participantes afirmou que tem alta confiança em informações provenientes dos profissionais de saúde (76,1%, n=982) e muitos expressaram baixa confiança em informações provenientes de folhetos (35,3%, n=456), familiares e amigos (46,7%, n=551), mídias sociais (39,7%, n=513) e telefonemas (45,1%, n=582). Com este estudo conclui-se que o nível de percepção e comunicação sobre a Covid-19 entre os que dele participaram é bom. No entanto, futuros estudos com abordagem quali-quantitativa são necessários para melhor aprofundamento do tema.

ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown aetiology but with a known contribution of pathogenic immune-mediated mechanisms. HERVs are associated with several neuropsychiatric diseases, including ASD. We studied anti-HERV-W, -K and -H-env immune profiles in ASD children to analyse differences between their respective mothers and child/mother control pairs and possible correlations to ASD severity and loss of adaptive abilities. Of the 84 studied individuals, 42 children (23 ASD and 19 neurotypical) and their paired mothers underwent clinical and neuropsychological evaluations. ASD severity was analysed with standardised tests. Adaptive functioning was studied with ABAS-II and GAC index. Plasma anti-env responses of HERV-K, -H and -W were tested with indirect ELISA. ASD and neurotypical children did not differ in age, gender, comorbidities and anti-HERV responses. In children with ASD, anti-HERV levels were not correlated to ASD severity, while a significant inverse correlation was found between anti-HERV-W-248-262 levels and adaptive/social abilities. Upregulation of anti-HERV-W response correlates to dysfunctional social and adaptive competences in ASD but not in controls, suggesting anti-HERV response plays a role in the appearance of peculiar ASD symptoms.

In the framework of the PNRA (Italian National Antarctic Research Program) project CARBONANT focusing on biogenic carbonates and held in January–February 2002, several Ross Sea banks were sampled to obtain samples of biogenic carbonates. In the Mawson Bank, species belonging to the isopod genus Chaetarcturus Brandt, 1990 were recorded, including a specimen that did not match any described species. In this paper we describe Chaetarcturus cervicornis sp. n., which is characterized by supraocular spines and two pairs of tubercle-like protrusions on the cephalothorax. The new species is very similar to C. bovinus (Brandt & Wägele, 1988) and C. adareanus (Hodgson, 1902), but has a clearly different spine pattern. The study of the species of the genus Chaetarcturus in the Ross Sea contributes to increase our knowledge on the diversity of the Antarcturidae in the Southern Ocean. Ross Sea banks seem to hold an interesting and not-well-known fauna, deserving attention in future research.

The present project is part of a planning study for structuring resilience in disaster risk reduction in cities. The objective of the article is to evaluate the capacity of municipal managers in terms of preparation for the occurrence of disasters. The article opted for an exploratory study, with the application of 10 interviews with specialists in risk management and disaster protection and civil defense. Ten municipalities were adopted in Paraná, in the south of Brazil, which had critical occurrences recorded between August/2016 and August/2017: hailstorms, storm tides (floods), runoffs and gale. The article provides how different municipalities deal with disaster preparedness, with a clear need for greater social and cultural involvement in their activities. Each municipality has its own characteristics in risk and disaster management. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to apply the methodology in other cities in Paraná. The document includes implications for the development of indicators that allow public managers to monitor risk and disaster management in communities, minimizing the negative impacts suffered by the local population. This document addresses a need identified in Brazil to study how municipal managers deal with preparation for extreme events, which are increasingly common in their cities.

Os Planos Diretores de Drenagem objetivam a apresentação das áreas de inundação nos municípios, onde, por consequência, não é permitida a expansão imobiliária. O problema está na desatualização desses documentos, pois eles são utilizados como base de análise para tomada de decisões oficiais. A pesquisa tem como objetivo apresentar a influência que o Plano Diretor de Drenagem do Alto Iguaçu pode ocasionar sobre o desenvolvimento urbano. Com a realização de um estudo de caso na cidade de Fazenda Rio Grande foi possível confirmar que o Plano influencia não apenas na promoção de loteamentos, mas também no dia-a-dia das pessoas, com a ocupação da área para atividades ilícitas, despejo de resíduos e insegurança local. Tais problemas podem ser solucionados a partir do envolvimento do governo e da sociedade, buscando o equilíbrio entre as melhores condições do ambiente e o aumento da qualidade de vida da população local

The yeast Spf1p protein is a primary transporter that belongs to group 5 of the large family of P-ATPases. Loss of Spf1p function produces ER stress with alterations of metal ion and sterol homeostasis and protein folding, glycosylation and membrane insertion. The amino acid sequence of Spf1p shows the characteristic P-ATPase domains A, N, and P and the transmembrane segments M1-M10. In addition, Spf1p exhibits unique structures at its N-terminus (N-T region), including two putative additional transmembrane domains, and a large insertion connecting the P domain with transmembrane segment M5 (D region). Here we used limited proteolysis to examine the structure of Spf1p. A short exposure of Spf1p to trypsin or proteinase K resulted in the cleavage at the N and C terminal regions of the protein and abrogated the formation of the catalytic phosphoenzyme and the ATPase activity. In contrast, limited proteolysis of Spf1p with chymotrypsin generated a large N-terminal fragment containing most of the M4-M5 cytosolic loop, and a minor fragment containing the C-terminal region. If lipids were present during chymotryptic proteolysis, phosphoenzyme formation and ATPase activity were preserved. ATP slowed Spf1p proteolysis without detectable changes of the generated fragments. The analysis of the proteolytic peptides by mass spectrometry and Edman degradation indicated that the preferential chymotryptic site was localized near the cytosolic end of M5. The susceptibility to proteolysis suggests an unexpected exposure of this region of Spf1p that may be an intrinsic feature of P5A-ATPases.

Com a disseminação do novo coronavírus no Brasil, o aumento da utilização da internet cresceu substancialmente devido ao isolamento social no início da pandemia. Aliado a este fator, diversos órgãos públicos passaram a compartilhar conteúdos informativos por meio das mídias sociais. Deste modo, cada vez mais se faz necessário utilizar ferramentas que permitam compreender a efetividade das divulgações realizadas quanto ao enfrentamento da doença. O objetivo do artigo é examinar o engajamento dos seguidores da página oficial da Prefeitura Municipal de Curitiba no Facebook, a partir da análise da tipologia e do teor das postagens, além do comportamento do respectivo público ao interagir com tais posts, durante os primeiros meses (entre 31/12/2019 e 30/04/2020) da pandemia da Covid-19 no município. A metodologia tem caráter quantitativo, sendo utilizado o software Facepager para coleta dos dados. Após a coleta, foi realizada a análise dos tipos de conteúdo e dos tipos de mídia adotadas pela Prefeitura, caracterizando as publicações de acordo com sua temática principal. Como principais resultados, observa-se que as publicações aumentaram de forma crescente, em conjunto com o número de casos e óbitos registrados. Não obstante, os tipos de mídia mais utilizados são as fotos, assim como os conteúdos mais compartilhados se referem à comunicação em tempo real, a sensibilização e educação e o relatórios de atividades realizadas. Conclui-se que a análise de ferramentas de uso público, como o Facebook, é muito importante para que os gestores locais compreendam o alcance da informação em momentos de crise

Objective We investigated whether lifestyle affects assisted reproduction technology (ART) outcomes.Design Cohort study.Setting Italian fertility unit.Participants From September 2014 to December 2016, women from couples presenting for evaluation and eligible for ART were invited to participate. Information on alcohol intake, current smoking and leisure physical activity (PA) during the year before the interview was collected, using a structured questionnaire. We considered the ART outcomes of the cycle immediately following the interview.Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary outcome measure was cumulative pregnancy rate per retrieval. Secondary measures were number of retrieved oocytes, embryo transfer and live birth.Results In 492 women undergoing an ART cycle, 427 (86.8%) underwent embryo transfer, 157 (31.9%) had at least one clinical pregnancy and 121 (24.6%) had live birth. The cumulative pregnancy rate per retrieval was 33.3% (95% CI 28.5% to 38.7%). In women in the third tertile of alcohol intake, adjusted relative risk was 0.97 (95% CI 0.87 to 1.08), 0.90 (95% CI 0.62 to 1.30) and 0.89 (95% CI 0.57 to 1.37) for embryo transfer, clinical pregnancy and live birth, respectively. The corresponding figures in women currently smoking more than 5 cigarettes/day were 1.00 (95% CI 0.88 to 1.16), 0.94 (95% CI 0.60 to 1.48) and 1.14 (95% CI 0.68 to 1.90), and in women with PA ≥5 hours/week were 0.93 (95% CI 0.79 to 1.08), 0.44 (95% CI 0.22 to 0.90) and 0.48 (95% CI 0.22 to 1.05), respectively.Conclusion There were no significant differences in in vitro fertilisation outcomes among women who used alcohol or tobacco in the year prior to treatment. Conservatively, all women should be advised to limit substance abuse. Moreover, our study suggested that maintaining a moderate, but not high, level of PA could be beneficial.

Objetivo: Conocer la prevalencia de los motivos de consulta y las características de los sujetos que ingresaron a un consultorio externo de kinesiología de un hospital público de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA). Materiales y método: Estudio observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo y transversal. Se recolectaron los datos de los sujetos ingresados al consultorio externo de la unidad de kinesiología atendidos durante el turno tarde. Para evaluar la distribución de las variables, se utilizó el test Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Resultados: Ingresaron un total de 1029 sujetos. El diagnóstico kinésico más prevalente fueron las algias inespecíficas y degenerativas con un total de 514 sujetos (49,9%), con una relación 2:1 a favor de las mujeres. El diagnóstico médico más prevalente fue el dolor lumbar. Del total de sujetos, 528 recibieron el alta kinésica, el 60% fue otorgada entre la sexta y décima sesión. Los sujetos desempleados tuvieron la tasa más alta de abandono, la cual fue del 60%. El grupo operarios fue la ocupación más prevalente. Conclusión: Este estudio permitió conocer la prevalencia de los motivos de consulta y las características de los sujetos que ingresaron a la unidad de kinesiología de un hospital público de CABA. El motivo de consulta más frecuente fue la lumbalgia. La mayor parte de la muestra estuvo conformada por sujetos de sexo femenino, de nacionalidad argentina, entre 41 y 64 años. En ocupaciones, la categoría operarios fue la más prevalente.

Ridehailing services such as Uber have been promoted as viable interventions for curbing alcohol-involved driving fatalities. However, evidence of ridehailing's impact has been mixed, with some studies finding no association but others finding either an increase or a decrease in fatalities. We contribute to this literature by examining more recent years of data, which capture a period during which Uber ridership has grown substantially and alcohol-involved fatalities have increased. Furthermore, we test whether the relationship between Uber availability and traffic fatalities depends on local characteristics. We employ multivariate regression models to test the association between Uber availability and total, alcohol-involved, and weekend and holiday-specific traffic fatalities in the 100 most populated metropolitan areas in the United States between 2009 and 2017. We find that Uber availability is not associated with changes in total, alcohol-involved, and weekend and holiday-specific traffic fatalities in aggregate, yet it is associated with increased traffic fatalities in urban, densely populated counties.

A higher expression of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) has been associated with several malignancies, including prostate cancer, implying a possible use as a diagnostic or prognostic cancer biomarker. For this reason, we examined the humoral response against different epitopes obtained from the envelope protein of HERV-K (HERV-K env-su19–37, HERV-K env-su109–126), HERV-H (HERV-H env-su229–241, HERV-H env387–399) and HERV-W (HERV-W env-su93–108, HERV-W env-su248–262) in the plasma of patients affected by prostate cancer (PCa), and compared to that of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and a borderline group of patients with atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP) and prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) and healthy controls. A significant antibody response was observed against HERV-K env-su109–126 (p = 0.004) and HERV-H env-su229–241 (p < 0.0001) in PCa patients compared to HCs, BPH and borderline cohorts, whilst no significance difference was found in the antibodies against HERV-W env-su93–108 and HERV-W env-su248–262 in patients with PCa. Our results provided further proof of the association between HERV-K and PCa and added new evidence about the possible involvement of HERV-H in PCa pathogenesis, highlighting their possibility of being used as biomarkers of the disease.

The present investigation attempted to assess the influence of two light sources, LED versus fluorescent light, on seed germination of nine aromatic species belonging to the genus Artemisia, Atriplex, Chenopodium, Salicornia, Sanguisorba, Portulaca and Rosmarinus. Pre-germination test was carried out in petri dishes, evidencing the need to overcome seed dormancy through cold stratification in Salicornia europaea. Thereafter, seeds were germinated in small trays with peat moss substrate in two growth chambers illuminated with either LED or fluorescent light featuring similar photosynthetic photon flux density. Germination lasted 20 days, during which time five indexes of germination performance (germination percentage, speed of germination, germination energy, germination rate index, and mean daily germination) were evaluated. At the end, shoot length and seedling fresh weight were assessed as early growth traits. Data are made available to allow critical evaluation of experimental outcome.

Contribució al coneixement dels copèpodes (Crustacea) meiobèntics de la costa de Sardenya, Itàlia Les dades disponibles sobre espècies italianes de copèpodes Canuelloida Khodami, Vaun MacArthur, Blanco-Bercial i Martínez Arbizu, 2017 i Harpacticoida Sars, 1903 registren un total de 210 espècies, però la seva diversitat i la seva biogeografia continuen estan escassament investigades. Vam portar a terme un estudi faunístic a la costa est de Sardenya (regió d’Ogliastra) a fi de documentar-hi la presència d’aquests taxons. Hi vam trobar un total de 41 espècies de 36 gèneres i 18 famílies. Tot i que moltes espècies es van identificar com a putatives, la llista de control italiana vigent va ser actualitzada amb 12 registres nous de gèneres i quatre d’espècies. Longipedia coronata Claus, 1862 (Canuelloida), Diosaccus tenuicornis (Claus, 1863), Asellopsis hispida Brady i Robertson, 1873, Wellsopsyllus (intermediopsyllus) intermedius (Scott i Scott, 1895) (totes Harpacticoida) van ser registrades per primera vegada a les costes de Sardenya. La comunitat de copèpodes va resultar particularment rica a l’illa d’Ogliastra, un illot rocallós amb esculls naturals, bancs de roques i praderies de Posidonia oceanica.
