Abstract

The advent of ultra-low noise microwave amplifiers revolutionized several research fields demanding for quantum-limited technologies. Exploiting a theoretical bimodal description of a linear phase-preserving amplifier, in this contribution we analyze some of the intrinsic properties of a model architecture (i.e., an rf-SQUID based Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier) in terms of amplification and noise generation for key case study input states (Fock and coherents). Furthermore, we present an analysis of the output signals generated by the parametric amplification mechanism when thermal noise fluctuations feed the device.

Abstract

Graphene and related 2D material (GRM) thin films consist of 3D assembly of billions of 2D nanosheets randomly distributed and interacting via van der Waals forces. Their complexity and the multiscale nature yield a wide variety of electrical characteristics ranging from doped semiconductor to glassy metals depending on the crystalline quality of the nanosheets, their specific structural organization ant the operating temperature. Here, the charge transport (CT) mechanisms are studied that are occurring in GRM thin films near the metal-insulator transition (MIT) highlighting the role of defect density and local arrangement of the nanosheets. Two prototypical nanosheet types are compared, i.e., 2D reduced graphene oxide and few-layer-thick electrochemically exfoliated graphene flakes, forming thin films with comparable composition, morphology and room temperature conductivity, but different defect density and crystallinity. By investigating their structure, morphology, and the dependence of their electrical conductivity on temperature, noise and magnetic-field, a general model is developed describing the multiscale nature of CT in GRM thin films in terms of hopping among mesoscopic bricks, i.e., grains. The results suggest a general approach to describe disordered van der Waals thin films.

Abstract

Noise at the quantum limit over a broad bandwidth is a fundamental requirement for future cryogenic experiments for neutrino mass measurements, dark matter searches, and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements as well as for fast high-fidelity read-out of superconducting qubits. In the last years, Josephson Parametric Amplifiers (JPA) have demonstrated noise levels close to the quantum limit, but due to their narrow bandwidth, only few detectors or qubits per line can be read out in parallel. An alternative and innovative solution is based on superconducting parametric amplification exploiting the travelling-wave concept. Within the Detector Array Readout with Travelling Wave AmplifieRS (DARTWARS) project, we develop Kinetic Inductance Travelling-Wave Parametric Amplifiers (KI-TWPAs) for low temperature detectors and qubit read-out. KI-TWPAs are typically operated in a three-wave mixing (3WM) mode and are characterised by a high gain, a high saturation power, a large amplification bandwidth, and nearly quantum limited noise performance. The goal of the DARTWARS project is to optimise the KI-TWPA design, explore new materials, and investigate alternative fabrication processes in order to enhance the overall performance of the amplifier. In this contribution we present the advancements made by the DARTWARS collaboration to produce a working prototype of a KI-TWPA, from the fabrication to the characterisation.

Abstract

This study presents recent advancements in Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs) developed and tested at Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica within the Detector Array Readout with Traveling Wave AmplifieRS project framework. Combining Josephson junctions with superconducting coplanar waveguides, JTWPAs offer advanced capabilities for quantum-limited broadband microwave amplification and the emission of non-classical microwave radiation. The work delves into the architecture, optimization, and experimental characterization of a JTWPA with a Resonant Phase-Matching mechanism, highlighting signal gains and idler conversion factors in relation to pump power and signal frequency.

Abstract

The characterization of the rf-SQUID-based JTWPA in terms of its noise figure and gain for different input states (Fock states or Coherent states) has been carried out. The spectral distribution of the noise temperature Tn and gain G presents a region where the amplifier has a relatively high gain with a thermal noise that can go beyond the standard quantum limit =ℏ/2 (valid only for single mode input states [44]) as shown in Fig. 3. The TWJPA is here biased in its 3WM regime and pumped at p = 12 GHz.

Abstract

Ultralow-noise microwave amplification and detection play a central role in different applications, going from fundamental physics experiments to the deployment of quantum technologies. In many applications the necessity of reading multiple detectors, or cavities or qubits, calls for large bandwidth amplifiers with the lowest possible noise. Current technologies are based on High Electron Mobility Transistors and Josephson Parametric Amplifiers. Both have limitations, the former in terms of the minimum noise, the latter in terms of bandwidth. Superconducting Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (TWPAs) have the potential of offering quantum limited noise and large bandwidth. These amplifiers are based on the parametric amplification of microwaves traveling along a transmission line with embedded nonlinear elements. We are developing superconducting TWPAs based both on Josephson junction arrays (Traveling Wave Josephson Parametric mplifiers) and on nonlinear kinetic inductance (Dispersion Engineered Traveling Wave Kinetic Inductance Amplifiers). Our goal is to achieve large bandwidth (in the 5 to 10 GHz range), large gain (more than 20 dB), large saturation power (more than -50 dBm), and near quantum limited noise (noise temperature less than 600 mK). Current achievements in the design and development of the high performance TWPAs are here reported and discussed, together with current limitations and possible future developments.

Abstract

When treating patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) the doctor-patient relationship can be very challenging. The dentist is often forced to work under general anaesthesia or conscious sedation. Children with ASD are patients with an increased risk of caries due to poor oral hygiene, a cariogenic diet and the use of xerostomal drugs. In this work therapeutic strategies used to treat this kind of patients are evaluated and a new method to treat children with ASD is presented in order to increase awareness about this condition in the dental field.The Atlas Center (a non-profit organisation in Peurgia, Italy) has developed a software, called paINTeraction, that allows these special children to immerse themselves in a virtual reality with the help of an operator. Through this system the child can explore the dental office (and all its sounds and noises) before the real dental visit, thus connecting to the dental professional, achieving greater compliance and reducing anxiety.paINTeraction, with the use of digital technology tools, may be particularly well suited to introduce patients to the therapeutic environment, particularly in the dental setting.

Abstract

The electron density of states and recombination kinetics of bulk heterojunction solar cells have been determined by means of low-frequency noise spectroscopy at room temperature and in dark conditions. The observed differences in the disorder parameter and electron lifetime are attributed to a different film ordering of the active layer because of the influence f a solvent additive. Blends prepared with the reference solvent resulted in the lowest electron lifetime and density of states opulation, while blends prepared with the addition of a high boiling point solvent resulted in a more efficient charge carrier eparation and a higher electron lifetime. Abstract

Topological insulators are considered new states of quantum matter that cannot be systematically related to conventional insulators and semiconductors. Among them, Bi2Se3 has attracted an increasing interest due to a simple surface band structure and due to a strong contribution of the surface to transport. While the dc electric transport properties have been extensively studied, intrinsic fluctuations and their effect on the surface conduction have received less attention. In order to better investigate these aspects, a detailed characterization of the low-frequency noise, also known as noise spectroscopy, has been made in Bi2Se3 thin films. The experimental results have been obtained for different samples thickness and geometry, in a temperature range from 300 down to 8 K, and as a function of dc bias current and gate voltage. While the observed spectral noise shows a typical thermal and shot noise part, an unusual reduction of the 1/f noise component is found, especially in the low-temperature region. A correlation of this behavior with structural and dc electric transport investigations suggests that it could be an indication of the occurrence of the topological regime. Flicker noise measurements, therefore, could be considered as a valid alternative technique to standard topological surface state spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The paper describes a gluing machine developed for the footwear industry and its recent improvements; it allows to glue the upper and rubber inserts on the soles of the shoes. To this aim, the machine was equipped with a Cartesian robot having a glue gun as end effector and with a vision system able to locate the position of the sole, arbitrarily placed on the worktop of the machine; the vision system also provides the outline of the soles, the surface on which to dispense the glue and information to plan the robot trajectory. Two procedures are presented for performing these operations; the first procedure is suitable for flat geometry soles for which the outline is clearly defined. The second procedure allows to treat three-dimensional soles with appreciable variation in height due to the presence of heels, raised outlines and tapered side surfaces. The final part of the paper illustrates the criteria adopted for planning the gluing trajectories and the experimental results of gluing operations obtained using the two mentioned procedures. In these operations, a laser pointer was fixed on the glue gun nozzle to simulate the glue spray with the beam of light emitted by the pointer.
