Abstract

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 ($^3$He) and tritium ($^3$H) at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV/c)$^2$) and $x_B>1$ kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta $40 \le p_{miss} \le 500$ MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within $\pm20\%$, is observed between data and calculations for the full $p_{miss}$ range for $^3$H and for $100 \le p_{miss} \le 350$ MeV/c for $^3$He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at $p_{miss} > 250$ MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of $^3$He plus $^3$H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire $p_{miss}$ range. Abstract

The ratio of the nucleon $F_2$ structure functions, $F_2^n/F_2^p$, isdetermined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelasticscattering of electrons from $^3$H and $^3$He nuclei. The experiment wasperformed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab and used two high resolutionspectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system whichincluded a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel techniqueexploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminatesmany theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results,which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range $0.19 < x < 0.83$, represent asignificant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Labmeasurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoreticalcalculations and empirical determinations of the $F_2^n/F_2^p$ ratio.

Abstract

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e′p) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2222 GeV, electron scattering angle 21.5∘, and proton emission angle -50∘. The differential cross sections, measured with ≈4% uncertainty, have been studied as a function of missing energy and missing momentum, and compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, obtained from a model based on the distorted-wave impulse approximation.

Abstract

The E12-14-012 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A has collected inclusive electron-scattering data for different targets at the kinematics corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV and scattering angle 15.54 deg. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the collected data and compare the double-differential cross sections for inclusive scattering of electrons, extracted using solid targets (aluminum, carbon, and titanium) and a closed argon-gas cell. The data extend over broad range of energy transfer, where quasielastic interaction, Delta-resonance excitation, and inelastic scattering yield contributions to the cross section. The double-differential cross sections are reported with high precision (~3%) for all targets over the covered kinematic range., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the $(e,e'p)$ reaction cross-section ratios for Helium-3 ($^3$He), Tritium ($^3$H), and Deuterium ($d$). The measurement covered a missing momentum range of $40 \le p_{miss} \le 550$ MeV$/c$, at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV$/c$)$^2$) and $x_B>1$, which minimized contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. The data is compared with plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations using realistic spectral functions and momentum distributions. The measured and PWIA-calculated cross-section ratios for $^3$He$/d$ and $^3$H$/d$ extend to just above the typical nucleon Fermi-momentum ($k_F \approx 250$ MeV$/c$) and differ from each other by $\sim 20\%$, while for $^3$He/$^3$H they agree within the measurement accuracy of about 3\%. At momenta above $k_F$, the measured $^3$He/$^3$H ratios differ from the calculation by $20\% - 50\%$. Final state interaction (FSI) calculations using the generalized Eikonal Approximation indicate that FSI should change the $^3$He/$^3$H cross-section ratio for this measurement by less than 5\%. If these calculations are correct, then the differences at large missing momenta between the $^3$He/$^3$H experimental and calculated ratios could be due to the underlying $NN$ interaction, and thus could provide new constraints on the previously loosely-constrained short-distance parts of the $NN$ interaction., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures (4 panels)

Abstract

The presence of dust grains profoundly affects the diffusion of the magnetic field in molecular clouds. When the electrons and ions are well coupled to the magnetic field and charged grains are only indirectly coupled, emergent Hall diffusion may dominate over all the other non ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects in a partially ionized dusty cloud. The low frequency, long wavelength (0.01 t0 1 pc) dispersive MHD waves will propagate in such a medium with the polarization of the waves determined by the dust charge density or the dust size distribution. In the presence of shear flows, these waves may become Kelvin Helmholtz (KH) unstable with the dust charge density or the grain size distribution operating as a switch to the instability. When Hall diffusion time is long (compared to the time over which waves are sheared), the growth rate of the instability in the presence of sub Alfvenic flow increases with the charge number Z on the grain, while it is quenched in the presence of Alfvenic or super Alfvenic flows. However, when Hall diffusion is fast, the growth rate of the instability depends on the dust charge only indirectly., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A system of modular sealed gas target cells has been developed for use in electron scattering experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). This system was initially developed to complete the MARATHON experiment which required, among other species, tritium as a target material. Thus far, the cells have been loaded with the gas species 3H, 3He, 2H, 1H and 40Ar and operated in nominal beam currents of up to 22.5 uA in Jefferson Lab's Hall A. While the gas density of the cells at the time of loading is known, the density of each gas varies uniquely when heated by the electron beam. To extract experimental cross sections using these cells, density dependence on beam current of each target fluid must be determined. In this study, data from measurements with several beam currents within the range of 2.5 to 22.5 uA on each target fluid are presented. Abstract

The success of the ambitious programs of both long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments employing liquid-argon time-projection chambers will greatly rely on the precision with which the weak response of the argon nucleus can be estimated. In the E12-14-012 experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall A, we have studied the properties of the argon nucleus by scattering a high-quality electron beam off a high-pressure gaseous argon target. Here, we present the measured $^{40}$Ar$(e,e^{\prime})$ double differential cross section at incident electron energy $E=2.222$~GeV and scattering angle $\theta = 15.541^\circ$. The data cover a broad range of energy transfers, where quasielastic scattering and delta production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. Abstract

Relative transverse drift (with respect to the ambient magnetic field) between the weakly magnetized electrons and the unmagnetized ions at the lower altitude (80 km) and between the weakly magnetized ions and unmagnetized dust at the higher altitude (90 km) gives rise to the finite Hall conductivity in the Earth's mesosphere. If, on the other hand, the number of free electrons is sparse in the mesosphere and most of the negative charge resides on the weakly magnetized, fine, nanometre sized dust powder and positive charge on the more massive, micron sized, unmagnetized dust, the sign of the Hall conductivity due to their relative transverse drift will be opposite to the previous case. Thus the sign of the Hall effect not only depends on the direction of the local magnetic field but also on the nature of the charge carrier in the partially ionized dusty medium. As the Hall and the Ohm diffusion are comparable below 80 km, the low frequency long wavelength waves will be damped at this altitude with the damping rate typically of the order of few minutes. Therefore, the ultra--low frequency magnetohydrodynamic waves can not originate below 80 km in the mesosphere. However, above 80 km since Hall effect dominates Ohm diffusion the mesosphere can host the ultra--low frequency waves which can propagate across the ionosphere with little or, no damping., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures; to appear in the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics

Abstract

To probe CP violation in the leptonic sector using GeV energy neutrino beams in current and future experiments using argon detectors, precise models of the complex underlying neutrino and antineutrino interactions are needed. The E12-14-012 experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall A was designed to perform a combined analysis of inclusive and exclusive electron scatterings on both argon ($N = 22$) and titanium ($Z = 22$) nuclei using GeV energy electron beams. The measurement on titanium nucleus provides essential information to understand the neutrino scattering on argon, large contribution to which comes from scattering off neutrons. Here we report the first experimental study of electron-titanium scattering as double differential cross section at beam energy $E=2.222$ GeV and electron scattering angle $\theta = 15.541$ deg, measured over a broad range of energy transfer, spanning the kinematical regions in which quasielastic scattering and delta production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. The data provide valuable new information needed to develop accurate theoretical models of the electromagnetic and weak cross sections of these complex nuclei in the kinematic regime of interest to neutrino experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. 71. Can Hall effect trigger Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in sub-Alfvenic flows?

Abstract

In the Hall magnetohydrodynamics, the onset condition of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability is solely determined by the Hall effect and is independent of the nature of shear flows. In addition, the physical mechanism behind the super and sub Alfvenic flows becoming unstable is quite different: the high frequency right circularly polarized whistler becomes unstable in the super Alfvenic flows whereas low frequency, left circularly polarized ion-cyclotron wave becomes unstable in the presence of sub Alfvenic shear flows. The growth rate of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability in the super Alfvenic case is higher than the corresponding ideal magnetohydrodynamic rate. In the sub Alfvenic case, the Hall effect opens up a new, hitherto inaccessible (to the magnetohydrodynamics) channel through which the partially or fully ionized fluid can become Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable. The instability growth rate in this case is smaller than the super Alfvenic case owing to the smaller free shear energy content of the flow. When the Hall term is somewhat smaller than the advection term in the induction equation, the Hall effect is also responsible for the appearance of a new overstable mode whose growth rate is smaller than the purely growing Kelvin Helmholtz mode. On the other hand, when the Hall diffusion dominates the advection term, the growth rate of the instability depends only on the Alfven Mach number and is independent of the Hall diffusion coefficient. Further, the growth rate in this case linearly increase with the Alfven frequency with smaller slope for sub Alfvenic flows., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The E12-14-012 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A has collected inclusive electron-scattering data for different targets at the kinematics corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV and scattering angle 15.54. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the collected data and compare the double-differential cross sections for inclusive scattering of electrons, extracted using solid targets (aluminum, carbon, and titanium) and a closed argon-gas cell. The data extend over broad range of energy transfer, where quasielastic interaction, Δ-resonance excitation, and inelastic scattering yield contributions to the cross section. The double-differential cross sections are reported with high precision (∼3%) for all targets over the covered kinematic range.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the (e,e′p) reaction cross-section ratios for Helium-3 (He3), Tritium (H3), and Deuterium (d). The measurement covered a missing momentum range of 40≤pmiss≤550MeV/c, at large momentum transfer (〈Q2〉≈1.9 (GeV/c)2) and xB>1, which minimized contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. The data is compared with plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations using realistic spectral functions and momentum distributions. The measured and PWIA-calculated cross-section ratios for He3/d and H3/d extend to just above the typical nucleon Fermi-momentum (kF≈250 MeV/c) and differ from each other by ∼20%, while for He3/H3 they agree within the measurement accuracy of about 3%. At momenta above kF, the measured He3/H3 ratios differ from the calculation by 20%−50%. Final state interaction (FSI) calculations using the generalized Eikonal Approximation indicate that FSI should change the He3/H3 cross-section ratio for this measurement by less than 5%. If these calculations are correct, then the differences at large missing momenta between the He3/H3 experimental and calculated ratios could be due to the underlying NN interaction, and thus could provide new constraints on the previously loosely-constrained short-distance parts of the NN interaction.

80. Viscous heating and instabilities in the partially ionized solar atmosphere.

Abstract

In weak magnetic fields (⁠|$\lesssim 50 \, \mbox{G}$|⁠), parallel and perpendicular viscosities, mainly from neutrals, may exceed magnetic diffusivities (Ohm, Hall, and ambipolar) in the middle and upper chromospheres. Ion-driven gyroviscosity may dominate in the upper chromosphere and transition region. In strong fields (⁠|$\gtrsim 100\, \mbox{G}$|⁠), viscosities primarily exceed diffusivities in the upper chromosphere and transition region. Parallel and perpendicular viscosities, being similar in magnitude, dampen waves and potentially compete with ambipolar diffusion in plasma heating, potentially inhibiting Hall and ambipolar instabilities when equal. The perpendicular viscosity tensor has two components, |$\nu _1$| and |$\nu _2$|⁠ , which differ slightly and show weak dependence on ion magnetization. Their differences, combined with shear, may destabilize waves, though magnetic diffusion introduces a cut-off for this instability. In configurations with a magnetic field |${\boldsymbol B}$| having vertical (⁠|$b_z=B_z/|{\boldsymbol B}|$|⁠) and azimuthal (⁠|$b_y=B_y/|{\boldsymbol B}|$|⁠) components, and a wavevector |${\boldsymbol k}$| with radial (⁠|$\hat{k}_x=k_x/|{\boldsymbol k}|$|⁠) and vertical (⁠|$\hat{k}_z=k_z/|{\boldsymbol k}|$|⁠) components, parallel viscosity, and Hall diffusion can generate the viscous-Hall instability. Gyroviscosity further destabilizes waves in the upper regions. These findings indicate that the solar atmosphere may experience various viscous instabilities, revealing complex interactions between viscosity, magnetic fields, and plasma dynamics across different atmospheric regions. Abstract

Although chemotherapy with magnetic nanocarriers has witnessed significant advancement in the field of cancer treatment, multimodal diagnosis and combinatorial therapy using a single nanoplatform will have much better efficacy in achieving superior results. Herein, we constructed a smart theranostic system by combining pH-sensitive tartaric acid-stabilized Fe3O4 magnetic nanocarriers (TMNCs) with SPECT imaging and a chemotherapeutic agent for image-guided chemo-hyperthermia therapy. The carboxyl-enriched exteriors of TMNCs provided sites for the conjugation of a chemotherapeutic drug (doxorubicin hydrochloride, DOX) and radiolabeling (141Ce). The usage of 145.4 keV gamma rays made this platform an ideal choice for in vivo SPECT-CT imaging, showing the retention of the nanoformulation in the tumor site even after 28 days. Further, TMNCs showed a very high transverse relaxation rate (r2) of 171 mM−1 s−1, which is higher than that of clinically approved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents such as ferumoxtran (65 mM−1 s−1) and ferumoxides (120 mM−1 s−1). Further, the developed drug-loaded hybrid platform showed significantly higher cytotoxicity towards breast cancer cells, which was augmented by in vitro magnetic hyperthermia. Bright-field microscopy and cell cycle analysis suggested that cell death occurred through induction of G2-M arrest and subsequent apoptosis. Abstract

The level of ionization and transport properties in the Earth's E and F layers are interrelated and vary due to electron–neutral, ion–neutral, ion–ion, and ion–electron collisions at various altitudes. Mobility of the ions, or the ion–Hall parameter β i (given by the ratio of the ion–cyclotron to the collision frequency), determines the relative importance of the various (i.e., Ohm, Hall, and Pedersen) conductivities, parallel, perpendicular, and cross (with respect to the magnetic field) viscosities, and thermal conductivities. Whereas perpendicular viscosity and thermal conductivity due to ions are 1 / β i 2 smaller than the parallel ion viscosity, both the parallel and perpendicular viscosities and thermal conductivities due to neutrals are of the same order. Further, the perpendicular component of the viscosity and thermal conductivity are a weak function of ion–Hall parameter. Using the E and F layers' ionospheric data, we calculate various transport coefficients and show that the perpendicular transport coefficients are of the same order as the parallel transport coefficients. For completeness, we also give an expression for the Ohm, Hall, and Pedersen diffusivities, which could be important in the lower layer of the ionosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To probe CP violation in the leptonic sector using GeV energy neutrino beams in current and future experiments using argon detectors, precise models of the complex underlying neutrino and antineutrino interactions are needed. The E12-14-012 experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall A was designed to perform a combined analysis of inclusive and exclusive electron scatterings on both argon (N=22) and titanium (Z=22) nuclei using GeV-energy electron beams. The measurement on titanium nucleus provides essential information to understand the neutrino scattering on argon, large contribution to which comes from scattering off neutrons. Here we report the first experimental study of electron-titanium scattering as double-differential cross section at beam energy E=2.222 GeV and electron-scattering angle θ=15.541, measured over a broad range of energy transfer, spanning the kinematical regions in which quasielastic scattering and delta production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. The data provide valuable new information needed to develop accurate theoretical models of the electromagnetic and weak cross sections of these complex nuclei in the kinematic regime of interest to neutrino experiments.

Abstract

The wave propagation in the partially ionized ionosphere plays an important role in the magnetosphere ionosphere coupling. For example, the ionosphere may supports very low-frequency Alfven wave which can be caused by a balance between the bulk fluid inertia (mostly due to neutrals in the lower and middle E region) and the deformation of the magnetic field. The plasma neutral collisional momentum exchange facilitates the transfer of the magnetic stress (felt directly by the ions) to the neutrals. Therefore, in the low-frequency (with respect to the neutral ion collision frequency) limit, waves through the ionosphere can propagate with very little damping. In the vanishing plasma inertia limit, waves can be excited due to the loading of neutral inertia on the field lines and thus may have very long wavelength and can easily couple to the magnetosphere. 93. Surface Wave Propagation in non--ideal plasmas

Abstract

The properties of surface waves in a partially ionized, compressible magnetized plasma slab are investigated in this work. The waves are affected by the nonideal magnetohydrodynamic effects which causes finite drift of the magnetic field in the medium. When the magnetic field drift is ignored, the characteristics of the wave propagation in a partially ionized plasma fluid is similar to the fully ionized ideal MHD except now the propagation properties depend on the fractional ionization as well as on the compressibility of the medium. The phase velocity of the sausage and kink waves increases marginally (by a few percent) due to the compressibility of the medium in both ideal as well as Hall diffusion dominated regimes. However, unlike ideal regime, only waves below certain cut off frequency can propagate in the medium in Hall dominated regime. This cut off for a thin slab has a weak dependence on the plasma beta whereas for thick slab no such dependence exists. More importantly, since the cut off is introduced by the Hall diffusion, the fractional ionization of the medium is more important than the plasma compressibility in determining such a cut off.
