A concept developed to provide powerful directional control effectiveness for a fighter aircraft at high angles of attack is described. The concept utilizes the energy concentrated in the strong forebody vortices (which form on slender bodies of high relative incidence) by controlling the lateral orientation of the vortices with respect to the body. The objective was to utilize the side force associated with asymmetric vortices, in a controlled manner, to enhance the ability of the fighter to recover from a departure from controlled flight. The results from water tunnel and wind tunnel experiments show that a small amount of tangential blowing along the forebody near the apex can effectively alter the forebody vortex system and generate large restoring yawing moments. Six degree of freedom digital simulation results show that this concept can substantially enhance recovery characteristics of fighter aircraft with long, slender forebodies. Also, the results of experiments which were conducted on a cone model are discussed where the principal test objective was to develop an understanding of the fluid mechanics involved in the process of vortex control. Knowledge gained in these more generic tests should allow the concept to be applied to a wider range of configurations.

Vortical flows in three dimensional configurations that are of typical interest to aerodynamicists and researchers in fluid mechanics are reviewed. A list of 10 issues was compiled to understanding complex vortical flows.

This review provides an illustrated introduction laying the knowledge base for vortical flows about three dimensional configurations that are of typical interest to aerodynamicists and researchers in fluid mechanics. The paper then compiles a list of ten issues, again in illustrative format, that the authors deem important to the understanding of complex vortical flows. These issues and our responses to them provide, it is hoped, a skeletal framework on which to hang the ensuing conference proceedings.

The structures of three dimensional separated flow about some chosen aerodynamic components at angle of attack are synthesized, holding strictly to the notion that streamlines in the external flow (viscous plus inviscid) and skin friction lines on the body surface may be considered as trajectories having properties consistent with those of continuous vector fields. Singular points in the fields are of limited number and are classified as simple nodes and saddles. Analogous flow structures at high angles of attack about blunt and pointed bodies, straight and swept wings, etc., are discussed, highlighting the formation of spiral nodes (foci) in the pattern of the skin friction lines. How local and global three dimensional separation lines originate and form is addressed, and the characteristics of both symmetric and asymmetric leeward wakes are described.

The separation of three dimensional turbulent boundary layers from the lee of flight vehicles at high angles of attack is investigated. The separation results in dominant, large scale, coiled vortex motions that pass along the body in the general direction of the free stream. In all cases of three dimensional flow separation and reattachment, the assumption of continuous vector fields of skin friction lines and external flow streamlines, coupled with simple laws of topology, provides a flow grammar whose elemental constituents are the singular points: the nodes, spiral nodes (foci), and saddles. The phenomenon of three dimensional separation may be constrained as either a local or a global event, depending on whether the skin friction line that becomes a line of separation originates at a node or a saddle point.

The obstacle block, developed as an alternative to the Preston tube for indirectly measuring skin friction on smooth surfaces in incompressible flows, is examined as a device for compressible flows as well. The block, which is congruent with a surface static pressure orifice, has a geometry which is easily specified and thus has a universal calibration. Data from two independent studies are used to establish such a calibration using 'wall' variables, valid for Mach numbers up to about 3. Various aspects concerning practical application of the device are examined, such as sensitivity to yaw and the minimum permissible axial spacing between blocks. Several examples showing the utility of the device are given.

A Legendre formulation for a pattern of streamlines adjacent to a surface considered as trajectories with properties consistent with those of a constant vector field is used to develop a mathematical framework for three-dimensional separated flows. Convergence of skin-friction lines onto a particular skin-friction line originating from a particular saddle point is defined as a necessary condition for flow separation. Steady, three-dimensional flow is considered, and singular points occurring in the skin-friction lines are shown to happen where the skin friction or the surface vorticity become zero, and become nodal or saddle points. The separation initiates and continues only globally, as a mixture of an infinite set of friction lines, or locally, with one line. The topography of streamlines in two-dimensional sections of three-dimensional flows is discussed, and examples are provided of a round-nosed body of revolution at varying angles of attack.

Based on the hypothesis that patterns of skin-friction lines and external streamlines reflect the properties of continuous vector fields, topology rules define a small number of singular points (nodes, saddle points, and foci) that characterize the patterns on the surface and on particular projections of the flow (e.g., the crossflow plane). The restricted number of singular points and the rules that they obey are considered as an organizing principle whose finite number of elements can be combined in various ways to connect together the properties common to all steady three dimensional viscous flows. Introduction of a distinction between local and global properties of the flow resolves an ambiguity in the proper definition of a three dimensional separated flow. Adoption of the notions of topological structure, structural stability, and bifurcation provides a framework to describe how three dimensional separated flows originate and succeed each other as the relevant parameters of the problem are varied.

The three-dimensional leeward separation about a 5 deg semi-angle cone at an 11 deg angle of attack was investigated in flight, in the wind tunnel, and by numerical computations. The test conditions were Mach numbers of 0.6, 1.5, and 1.8 at Reynolds numbers between 7 and 10 million based on free-stream conditions and a 30-inch wetted length or surface. The surface conditions measured included mean static and fluctuating pressures; skin friction magnitudes and separation line positions were obtained using obstacle blocks. The mean static pressures from flight and wind tunnel were in good agreement. The computed results gave the same distributions, but were slightly more positive in magnitude. The experimentally measured primary and secondary separation line locations compared closely with computed results. There were substantial differences in level and in trend between the surface root-mean-square pressure fluctuations obtained in flight and in the wind tunnel, due, it is thought, to a relatively high acoustic disturbance level in the tunnel compared with the quiescent conditions in flight.

The flow over a 5 deg semi-angle cone at incidence in supersonic flow is studied as a model problem for the flow over aircraft forebodies. A computational method utilizing the conically symmetric Navier-Stokes equations is used to obtain theoretical flow results which are compared with experimental data from the Ames Research Center 6- by 6-Foot Wind Tunnel and with results from a cone model sting mounted on an F-15 aircraft. The computed results agree well with the wind-tunnel data but less well with the flight data. Modification of the algebraic turbulence model was necessary to reflect an apparent lower turbulence level in flight than was present in the wind tunnel.

Diverse kinds of three-dimensional regions of separation in laminar and turbulent boundary layers are discussed that exist on lifting aerodynamic configurations immersed in flows from subsonic to hypersonic speeds. In all cases of three dimensional flow separation, the assumption of continuous vector fields of skin-friction lines and external-flow streamlines, coupled with simple topology laws, provides a flow grammar whose elemental constituents are the singular points: nodes, foci, and saddles. Adopting these notions enables one to create sequences of plausible flow structures, to deduce mean flow characteristics, expose flow mechanisms, and to aid theory and experiment where lack of resolution in numerical calculations or wind tunnel observation causes imprecision in diagnosing the three dimensional flow features.

The paper deals with the salient phenomena of three-dimensional symmetric and asymmetric separated flows about typical forbodies at high angles of attack. Particular consideration is given to pressure, forces, and laser vapor screen measurements carried out on a 5-deg semiangle cone in a Mach 0.6 flow under turbulent conditions and supportive tests using a 16-deg semiangle tangent ogive.

The development of the turbulent symmetric and asymmetric vortex flow about the lee side of a 5 deg semiangle conical forebody at high relative incidence was investigated. The cone was immersed in a Mach 0.6 airstream at a Reynolds number of 13.5 x 10 to the 6th power based on the 1.4 m axial length of the cone. Small amounts of air injected normally or tangentially to the cone surface, but on one side of the leeward meridian and beneath the vortex farthest from the wall, were effective in biasing the asymmetry. With this reorientation of the forebody vortices, the amplitude of the side force could be reduced to the point where its direction was reversed. This phenomenon was obtained either by changing the blowing rate at constant incidence or by changing incidence at constant blowing rate. Normal injection appeared more effective than tangential injection. The contrarotating vortices in the penetrating jet flow were of opposite hand to the rotational directions of the forebody vortices. A distinctively organized and stable flow structure emerged with the jet vortices positioned above the forebody vortices.

It is shown that topology rules can define a small number of singular points on an aerodynamic surface and in the flow which can be combined in various ways to create the structures and characterize the physical mechanisms of three-dimensional separated flows. This topological development is based on the hypothesis that vector fields of skin-friction lines and external streamlines remain continuous. Among examples treated are the lee-side separated flows about slender bodies at angle of attack with symmetric or asymmetric wake structures; about a protuberance normal to a wall; and over a rearward-facing axisymmetric step.

Three-dimensional flow separations about a 5 degree (semiapex angle, theta sub C), 1.4 m long, circular cone up to moderately high relative incidence, alpha/theta sub C approximately 5, were studied in the Mach number range 0.3 M sub infinity 1.8. The cone was tested in the Ames 1.8 by 1.8 m wind tunnel at Reynolds numbers, R sub L infinity, based on the cone length, L, from 4.5 times 10 to the 6th power to 13.5 times 10 to the 6th power, under nominally zero heat transfer conditions. Overall forces and mean surface pressures were compared with earlier measurements. Supportive three-dimensional laser velocimeter measurements of mean and fluctuating velocity in a slightly asymmetric vortex wake about a slender tangent ogive cylinder at incidence having respective nose and overall body fineness ratios of 3.5 and 12, are included.

A novel technique utilizing an infrared-sensitive imaging camera has been used to determine the location of three-dimensional (3-D) separated flow regions on an inclined 5 deg semiangle fiberglass cone. The results illustrate that there is a change in the contrast of the infrared (IR) signature on the cone surface corresponding with the location where the skin-friction lines merge toward lines of 3-D separation. This technique should offer a convenient means for locating separated flow regions on wind-tunnel models while obtaining simultaneous force, skin-friction, and pressure data.

A compact, nonobtrusive, bi-directional, skin-friction gage was developed to measure the mean shear stress beneath a three-dimensional boundary layer. The gage works by measuring the heat flux from two orthogonal wires embedded in the surface. Such a gage was constructed and its characteristics were determined for different angles of yaw in a calibration experiment in subsonic flow with a Preston tube used as a standard. Sample gages were then used in a fully three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer on a circular cone at high relative incidence, where there were regimes of favorable and adverse pressure gradients and three-dimensional separation. Both the direction and magnitude of skin friction were then obtained on the cone surface.

Three dimensional flow separations about a circular cone were investigated in the Mach number range 0.6 - 1.8. The cone was tested in the Ames 1.8 by 1.8 m wind tunnel at Reynolds numbers based on the cone length from 4,500,000 to 13,500,000 under nominally zero heat transfer conditions. Results indicate that: (1) the lee-side separated flow develops from initially symmetrically disposed and near-conical separation lines at angle of incidence/cone semiangle equal to approximately 1, with the free shear layers eventually rolling up into tightly coiled vortices at all Mach numbers; (2) the onset of asymmetry of the lee-side separated flow about the mean pitch plane is sensitive to Mach number, Reynolds number, and the nose bluntness; and (3) as the Mach number is increased beyond 1.8, the critical angle of incidence for the onset of asymmetry increases until at about M = 2.75 there is no longer any significant side force development.

Quasi-steady three dimensional separated flows about bodies of large fineness ratio operating at large angles of incidence or yaw are discussed. The general character of the three dimensional attached boundary layer, the concept of limiting streamlines, and the physics of three dimensional separation and reattachment are among the factors considered. Specific examples are given. The advantages of swept, sharp edges that generate controlled (or fixed) three dimensional flow separations on a vehicle, due to the qualitatively unchanging flow field developed throughout the range of flight conditions, are emphasized.
