Abstract

La enseñanza de las ciencias naturales en la Educación Básica busca el desarrollo de un pensamiento crítico y reflexivo acerca del ambiente por parte de los estudiantes. Sin embargo, las estrategias didácticas utilizadas se centran en la memorización y repetición de conocimientos, sin promover la utilización de los espacios en los que se desarrolla el estudiante. En este trabajo se propone un Sendero de Interpretación Botánico en un bosque adyacente al Liceo San José de Los Teques, como medio didáctico orientado a la enseñanza de las Ciencias Naturales de la III etapa de la Educación Básica. Para ello se identificaron los rasgos con potencial interpretativo relacionados con los conceptos de botánica que se incluyen en los programas de estudio. El sendero propuesto constituye un medio didáctico que garantiza experiencias activas que vinculan al estudiante con el ambiente tanto en lo sensorial como en lo cognitivo. Natural science teaching in Primary Education aims to develop critical and reflexive thinking by the students about the environment. However, the didactical strategies used are focused on memorizing and repeating knowledge, without promoting the use of spaces where the student develops itself. On this paper a Botanical Path of Interpretation is suggested in a wood besides San Jose de Los Teques High school, as a didactical means oriented to teaching natural science in the 3rd stage of Primary Education. To achieve this, the features with interpretative potential related with the botanical concepts included in the study programs were identified. O ensino das ciências naturais no Ensino Básico visa o desenvolvimento dum pensamento crítico e reflexivo sobre o ambiente por parte dos estudantes. Porém, as estratégias didáticas utilizadas centram-se na memorização e repetição de conhecimentos, sem promover a utilização dos espaços nos que o estudante se desenvolver. Nesse trabalho propõe-se um Sendeiro de Interpretação Botânico na floresta adjacente à Escola Secundária San José de Los Teques, como médio didático orientado ao ensino das ciências naturais da III etapa do Ensino Básico. Para isso identificaram-se os rasgos com potencial interpretativo relacionados com os conceitos de botânica incluídos nos programas de estudo. 65. A novel approach for lactate threshold assessment based on rating of perceived exertion

Abstract

This study tested the hypothesis that the DMAX (for maximal distance) method could be applied to ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), to propose a novel method for individual detection of the lactate threshold (LT) using RPE alone during an incremental test to exhaustion. Twenty-one participants performed an incremental test on a cycle ergometer. At the end of each stage, lactate concentration was measured and the participants estimated RPE using the Borg CR100 scale. The intensity corresponding to the fixed lactate values of 2 or 4 mmol • L-1 (2mM and 4mM), the ventilatory threshold (VT), the respiratory-compensation point (RCP), and the instant of equality of pulmonary gas exchange (RER=1.00) were determined. Lactate (DMAX La) and RPE (DMAX RPE) thresholds were determined using the DMAX method. Oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate, and power output measured at DMAX RPE and at D MAX La were not statistically different. Bland-Altman plots showed small bias and good agreements when DMAX RPE was compared with the DMAX La and RER=1.00 methods (bias = -0.05% and -2% of VO2max, respectively). Conversely, VO2 from the D MAX RPE method was lower than VO2 at 4 mM and at RCP and was higher than VO2 at 2 mM and at VT. VO2 at D MAX RPE was strongly correlated with VO2 at D MAX La (r = .97), at RER=1.00 (r = .97), at 2 mM (r = .85), at 4 mM (r = .93), at VT (r = .95), and at RCP (r = .95). The combination of the DMAX method with the RPE responses permitted precise and individualized estimates of LT using the DMAX method.

Abstract

Interhemispheric transfer (IT) time through the corpus callosum can be measured with a manual reaction time (RT) to lateralized visual stimuli (the so-called Poffenberger paradigm) by subtracting mean RT of faster uncrossed hemifield-hand combinations (not requiring an IT) from slower crossed combinations (requiring an IT). That the corpus callosum is involved in IT has been demonstrated by its dramatic lengthening in patients with a section of the corpus callosum. However, it is still unclear whether the signal transmitted by the corpus callosum concerns perceptual or motor stages of RT. To try and cast light on this question, in a first experiment we tested normal subjects on a partially modified Poffenberger paradigm with stop trials intermingled with go trials. In the former, subjects are supposed to refrain from responding following a stop signal (stop-signal paradigm). This paradigm can tease apart the contribution of the controlled and ballistic stages to overall RT and, used together with the Poffenberger task, enables one to assess the stage at which IT occurs. The controlled stage lies before the point of no return, i.e. the point beyond which the response cannot be inhibited, and concerns perceptual and pre-motor processes, while the ballistic stage occurs after the point of no return and concerns the motoric aspect of the response. We found that the slower responses typically obtained in the crossed conditions were more likely to be inhibited than the faster uncrossed responses and this suggests that IT occurs prior to the point of no return. Since the precise locus of the point of no return is uncertain, in a second experiment we used response force as a dependent variable reflecting the activation of the motor cortex. We found that none of the force parameters studied differed between crossed and uncrossed conditions while the temporal parameters confirmed the presence of an advantage of the uncrossed combinations. Abstract

Rhesus haplotype frequencies computed for 804 and 546 Wallisians from New Caledonia are compared to the data collected for 13 Oceanian samples belonging to the same Austronesian linguistic family. Genetic distances are computed between the 15 populations and used for a principal coordinate analysis. Kanaks are genetically close to Fidjians, while the Wallisian sample share a high genetic similarity with the Tonga islanders. The results obtained for the whole area including the Wallis homeland for the Wallisian sample indicate a tight relationship between geographical and genetic differentiations in the Pacific, supported by a high correlation coefficient between the two distance matrices. However, the observed patterns are better explained by the history of migrations reconstructed from archaeological and linguistic data than by a pure isolation-by-distance model.

Abstract

We present the results of AG antigen typings of three Caucasoid population samples: Lebanese, Tunisians, and Finns. AG haplotype frequencies estimated by maximum-likelihood methods are compared with the frequencies observed in 13 world populations previously tested for AG specificities by computing a genetic distance matrix used in a multivariate analysis. A high degree of polymorphism characterizes the three samples, with 10 haplotypes detected in the Lebanese and 11 haplotypes detected in the Tunisians and Finns; high heterozygosity levels are also present in the three populations. The genetic distance analysis shows that the three populations possess a genetic structure intermediate between those observed in sub-Saharan Africans and in Caucasoids from the Near East and India. This tight correspondence between AG differentiation and geography is confirmed by a highly significant correlation coefficient found between genetic and geographic distances computed worldwide, suggesting that an isolation by distance model of evolution applies to the AG system. The Ewens-Watterson test for selective neutrality on all world populations tested for AG specificities also supports the hypothesis that the AG system behaves like a neutral polymorphism. Overall, the AG differentiation pattern appears to be close to the patterns observed for other serological polymorphisms, such as RH, GM, and HLA, whose evolutionary mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract

This study analyzes patterns of variation in eight GM and seven Rhesus (RH) haplotypes across sub-Saharan Africa. We examine the concordance with genetic patterns of both geographic and language-family relationships by spatial analysis and ordination techniques. The genetic variation has significant spatial structure, but positive autocorrelation declines neither asymptotically nor proportionally with increasing distance. Evidently, neither isolation by distance with increasing distance. Evidently, neither isolation by distance nor clinical migration-selection models account for the observed genetic structure. Language-family relationship is the best predictor of genetic relationship and may reflect historic migrations and expansions of ethnically different peoples within sub-Saharan Africa. Yet the greatest part of the genetic variance remains unexplained by the models we have tested.

Abstract

We present results from noise measurements on double barrier resonant tunnel diodes, down to extremely low current bias values. Such measurements were performed for current levels between 0.8 pA and 10 nA, in order to investigate the theoretically predicted deviations from full shot noise due to the interplay of Coulomb repulsion and Pauli exclusion. While Coulomb effects are visible also in the proximity of the current peak, Pauli exclusion is expected to contribute only at very low current levels, which has motivated our effort towards an increase in the sensitivity of the measuring equipment. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper we review and discuss the effects of electron-electron interaction on shot noise. We will focus on nanoelectronic devices, which are an extremely interesting field of study for this subject, since the possible transport regimes, and the wide range of interaction strength between carriers, cause a large variety of noise behaviors. The fact that noise is much more sensitive to electron-electron interaction than steady state transport, and the recent advances in measurement techniques, have caused an increasing interest for this subject. Since this is a relatively new topic, results date at most a decade, and there are still many points that need to be clarified and investigated in deeper detail.
