51. Quantum non-local theory of topological Fermi arc plasmons in Weyl semimetals

Abstract

The surface of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) displays Fermi arcs, i.e. disjoint segments of a two-dimensional Fermi contour. We present a quantum-mechanical non-local theory of chiral Fermi arc plasmons in WSMs with broken time-reversal symmetry. These are collective excitations constructed from topological Fermi arc and bulk electron states and arising from electron-electron interactions, which are treated in the realm of the random phase approximation. Our theory includes quantum effects associated with the penetration of the Fermi arc surface states into the bulk and dissipation, which is intrinsically non-local in nature and arises from decay processes mainly involving bulk electron-hole pair excitations., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Objective: To assess the diagnostic performance of 18F‐fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐d‐glucose (18F‐FDG) positron emission tomograpy (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in nodal staging before radical cystectomy (RC) and pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) for bladder cancer (BCa). Materials and Methods: This analysis was based on a cohort of 199 BCa patients undergoing RC and bilateral PLND between 2015 and 2022. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) or immunotherapy (NAI) was administered after oncological evaluation. All patients received preoperative 18F‐FDG PET/CT to assess extravesical disease. Point estimates for true negative, false negative, false positive, true positive, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of conventional imaging and PET/CT were calculated. Subgroup analysis in patients receiving neoadjuvant treatment was performed. Results: At preoperative evaluation, 30 patients (15.1%) had 48 suspicious nodal spots on 18F‐FDG PET/CT. At RC and bilateral PLND, a total of 4871 lymph nodes (LNs) were removed with 237 node metastases corresponding to 126 different regions. Pathological node metastases were found in 17/30 (57%) vs 39/169 patients (23%) with suspicious vs negative preoperative 18F‐FDG PET/CT, respectively (sensitivity = 0.30, specificity = 0.91, PPV = 0.57, NPV = 0.77, accuracy = 0.74). On per‐region analysis including 1367 nodal regions, LN involvement was found in 19/48 (39%) vs 105/1319 (8%) suspicious vs negative regions at PET/CT, respectively (sensitivity = 0.15, specificity = 0.98, PPV = 0.40, NPV = 0.92, ACC = 0.90). Similar results were observed for patients receiving NAC (n = 44, 32.1%) and NAI (n = 93, 67.9% [per‐patient: sensitivity = 0.36, specificity = 0.91, PPV = 0.59, NPV = 0.80, accuracy = 0.77; per‐region: sensitivity = 0.12, specificity = 0.98, PPV = 0.32, NPV = 0.93, ACC = 0.91]). Study limitations include its retrospective design and limited patient numbers. Conclusions: In eight out of 10 patients with negative preoperative 18F‐FDG PET/CT, pN0 disease was confirmed at final pathology. No differences were found based on NAC vs NAI treatment. These findings suggest that 18F‐FDG PET/CT could play a role in the preoperative evaluation of nodal metastases in BCa patients, although its cost‐effectiveness is uncertain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In highly viscous electron systems such as, for example, high quality graphene above liquid nitrogen temperature, a linear response to applied electric current becomes essentially nonlocal, which can give rise to a number of new and counterintuitive phenomena including negative nonlocal resistance and current whirlpools. It has also been shown that, although both effects originate from high electron viscosity, a negative voltage drop does not principally require current backflow. In this work, we study the role of geometry on viscous flow and show that confinement effects and relative positions of injector and collector contacts play a pivotal role in the occurrence of whirlpools. Certain geometries may exhibit backflow at arbitrarily small values of the electron viscosity, whereas others require a specific threshold value for whirlpools to emerge.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Conservative management is an option for prostate cancer (PCa) patients either with the objective of delaying or even avoiding curative therapy, or to wait until palliative treatment is needed. PIONEER, funded by the European Commission Innovative Medicines Initiative, aims at improving PCa care across Europe through the application of big data analytics.OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of PCa patients on conservative management by using an international large network of real-world data.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: From an initial cohort of >100 000 000 adult individuals included in eight databases evaluated during a virtual study-a-thon hosted by PIONEER, we identified newly diagnosed PCa cases (n = 527 311). Among those, we selected patients who did not receive curative or palliative treatment within 6 mo from diagnosis (n = 123 146).OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Patient and disease characteristics were reported. The number of patients who experienced the main study outcomes was quantified for each stratum and the overall cohort. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to estimate the distribution of time to event data.RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: The most common comorbidities were hypertension (35-73%), obesity (9.2-54%), and type 2 diabetes (11-28%). The rate of PCa-related symptomatic progression ranged between 2.6% and 6.2%. Hospitalization (12-25%) and emergency department visits (10-14%) were common events during the 1st year of follow-up. The probability of being free from both palliative and curative treatments decreased during follow-up. Limitations include a lack of information on patients and disease characteristics and on treatment intent.CONCLUSIONS: Our results allow us to better understand the current landscape of patients with PCa managed with conservative treatment. Abstract

Helicons are transverse electromagnetic waves propagating in three-dimensional (3D) electron systems subject to a static magnetic field. We present a theory of helicons propagating through a 3D Weyl semimetal. Our approach relies on the evaluation of the optical conductivity tensor from semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, with the inclusion of certain Berry curvature corrections that have been neglected in the earlier literature (such as the one due to the orbital magnetic moment). We demonstrate that the axion term characterizing the electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals dramatically alters the helicon dispersion with respect to that in nontopological metals. Abstract

There is growing experimental interest in coupling cavity photons to the cyclotron resonance excitations of electron liquids in high-mobility semiconductor quantum wells or graphene sheets. These media offer unique platforms to carry out fundamental studies of exciton-polariton condensation and cavity quantum electrodynamics in a regime in which electron-electron interactions are expected to play a pivotal role. Focusing on graphene, we present a theoretical study of the impact of electron-electron interactions on a quantum Hall polariton fluid, that is a fluid of magneto-excitons resonantly coupled to cavity photons. We show that electron-electron interactions are responsible for an instability of graphene integer quantum Hall polariton fluids towards a modulated phase. We demonstrate that this phase can be detected by measuring the collective excitation spectra, which soften at a characteristic wave vector of the order of the inverse magnetic length., Comment: 26+17 pages, 5+3 figures

Abstract

A study published in BJU International examined the complications associated with robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with intracorporeal neobladder reconstruction. The study analyzed data from 858 patients who underwent the procedure at 16 European centers between 2003 and 2022. The results showed a high overall rate of complications, with urinary tract infection (UTI) being the most common complication. The study highlighted the need for improvements in surgical technique and peri-operative management to reduce complications. The findings also suggested the importance of careful management of the urinary device and consideration of neoadjuvant therapy in patient care. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

The Physics Teacher has published over the years many inspiring papers with an historical slant and we agree with Thomas B. Greenslade, who recently wrote that teaching physics is about "integrating physics with human culture.… if we are going to leave a lasting impact on our students, we should do more than teach them pure physics." Some of these papers describe scientific tours in places where famous scientists lived and worked. In one of these papers, we read, "There is something very special about standing in the place where scientific history was made or seeing an instrument that was used to make an important discovery." We had the same feeling, but without moving from our place.

Abstract

We present an ab-initio study of the spin-resolved optical conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) group-VIB transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We carry out fully-relativistic density-functional-theory calculations combined with maximally localized Wannier functions to obtain band manifolds at extremely high resolutions and focus on the photo-response of 2D TMDs to circularly-polarized light in a wide frequency range. We present extensive numerical results for monolayer TMDs involving molybdenum and tungsten combined with sulphur and selenium. Our numerical approach allows us to locate with a high degree of accuracy the positions of the points in the Brillouin zone that are responsible for van Hove singularities in the optical response. Surprisingly, some of the saddle points do not occur exactly along high-symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone, although they happen to be in their close proximity., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In the last decade shape-engineering of TiO2 anatase nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted increasing attention owing to the possibility to maximize the presence of {001} facets, which have been reported to show peculiar adsorption, electronic, and (photo)catalytic properties. It is well-known that the anatase (001) surface is prone to reconstruction and several models have been proposed and validated by DFT calculations and single crystal studies. However, its true atomic structure in shape-engineered TiO2 anatase nanoparticles often remains elusive. In this study we shed light on this issue combining IR spectroscopy of CO adsorbed at very low temperature and thorough DFT modelling. Our results show that the thermal treatment in oxygen, performed to remove the capping agents (i.e., fluorides) employed in the synthesis of shape-controlled NPs, leads to a reconstruction of the {001} facets which is compatible with an "add-oxygen" model (AOM) and not with the most commonly reported "add-molecule" model (ADM). These findings can guide future experimental and computational studies highlighting that the AOM reconstruction is the most appropriate model to describe the properties and reactivity of the {001} facets in shape-controlled TiO2 nanoparticles after thermal removal of fluorides.
