Objectives: The objective of this review is to assess the available literature systematically related to the effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for the management of occlusal and root carious lesions in permanent teeth regardless of age. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta‐Analyses statement. A literature search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, DOAJ, and Open Gray with no language restrictions up to December 2022. Three reviewers critically assessed the studies for eligibility. Any disputes between the reviewers were handled by a fourth independent reviewer. The quality assessment and data extraction of the studies were performed. Results: A total of 2176 studies were screened. The titles and abstracts of the studies were then reviewed (n = 346), and 52 studies met the search criteria. Following the full‐text review, 11 studies investigated the effect of SDF against other treatments such as chlorhexidine, sodium fluoride, ammonium bifluoride, tricalcium silicate paste, casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate, glass ionomer cement (GIC) combined with fluoride varnish, resin‐modified GIC, and atraumatic restorative treatment were assessed. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this review, the use of SDF is promising with high preventative fractions in permanent teeth of children and older populations when compared to other topical applications such as dental varnish containing sodium fluoride. The aim of this umbrella review was to evaluate the longevity of glass ionomer cement (GIC) as a restorative material for primary and permanent teeth. Research in the literature was conducted in three databases (MedLine/PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus). The inclusion criteria were: (1) to be a systematic review of clinical trials that (2) evaluated the clinical longevity of GICs as a restorative material in primary and/or permanent teeth; the exclusion criteria were: (1) not being a systematic review of clinical trials; (2) not evaluating longevity/clinical performance of GICs as a restorative material; and (3) studies of dental restorative materials in teeth with enamel alterations, root caries, and non-carious cervical lesions. Twenty-four eligible articles were identified, and 13 were included. The follow-up periods ranged from 6 months to 6 years. Different types of GICs were evaluated in the included studies: resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), compomers, and low- and high-viscosity glass ionomer cement. Some studies compared amalgam and composite resins to GICs regarding longevity/clinical performance. Analyzing the AMSTAR-2 results, none of the articles had positive criteria in all the evaluated requisites, and none of the articles had an a priori design. The criteria considered for the analysis of the risk of bias of the included studies were evaluated through the ROBIS tool, and the results of this analysis showed that seven studies had a low risk of bias; three studies had positive results in all criteria except for one criterion of unclear risk; and two studies showed a high risk of bias. GRADE tool was used to determine the quality of evidence; for the degree of recommendations, all studies were classified as Class II, meaning there was still conflicting evidence on the clinical performance/longevity of GICs and their recommendations compared to other materials. The level of evidence was classified as Level B, meaning that the data were obtained from less robust meta-analyses and single randomized clinical trials. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first umbrella review approaching GIC in permanent teeth. GICs are a good choice in both dentitions, but primary dentition presents more evidence, especially regarding the atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) technique. Within the limitation of this study, it is still questionable if GIC is a good restorative material in the medium/long term for permanent and primary dentition. Many of the included studies presented a high risk of bias and low quality. The techniques, type of GIC, type of cavity, and operator experience highly influence clinical performance. Thus, clinical decision-making should be based on the dental practitioner’s ability, each case analysis, and the patient’s wishes. More evidence is needed to determine which is the best material for definitive restorations in permanent and primary dentition.

Objective: To compare the clinical performance of two glass-ionomer cements in combination with two light-cured coatings in Class II cavities. Method and materials: In total, 43 Equia Fil/Equia Coat and 42 Fuji IX GP Fast/Fuji Coat LC restorations were placed, in 34 patients. Only Class II cavities with twoor three-surface restorations were included. The clinical performance was evaluated at baseline, after 1, 2, and 3 years using the FDI criteria. For the statistical analysis, Fisher exact test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-Whitney U test were applied. The success and survival of the restorations were calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method and a log-rank test was used to detect significant differences between the tested materials. Results: At the 3-year recall, no significant differences could be detected between the two glass-ionomer cements for any of the evaluated criteria (Mann-Whitney U test, P > .05). When comparing the baseline with the recall data at 3 years for each material separately, significant changes could be observed in both materials for the criteria "surface luster," "fracture of material and retention," and "approximal anatomical form" (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, P < .05). Additionally, the Equia Fil restorations showed a notable change for the criteria "marginal adaptation" (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, P = .039). At the 3-year follow up, the Equia Fil and the Fuji IX GP Fast restorations exhibited an overall survival rate of 86.21% and 84.0%, respectively. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in Pulpotomy of permanent teeth in irreversible pulpitis. METHODOLOGY: This observational study was conducted in the Department of Operative Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro / Hyderabad, from January to December 2019, through the non-probability purposive sampling technique. Fifty patients were included of both genders, ranging from 18-50 years. Irreversible pulpitis was diagnosed by lingering pain on hot and cold touch with normal peri-apical status. The written consent was taken from all participants. Each patient was evaluated clinically for the presence of pain, and peri-apical radiographs were taken. A visual analog scale (VAS) measured patients' pain before and after treating pulpitis. After treatment of patients, the efficacy of PRF was evaluated by a pain scale. The results were statistically compiled by SPSS version-21 and applying the "t"-test. RESULTS: The severity of pain was observed as; severe in 18 (36%), moderate in 28 (56%) and mild in 4 (8%) patients before starting the treatment. After 24 hours treating with PRF, 40 (80%) patients became pain-free, 1 (1%) with moderate, while the 9 (18%) patients were observed with mild pain; the results obtained were highly significant with a p-value

Introduction: Hypodontia refers to the congenital absence of less than six teeth. This absence may be unilateral or bilateral. Though the congenital agenesis of bilateral mandibular/maxillary incisors has often been reported in literature, however, the congenital absence of bilateral mandibular and maxillary incisors, as well as the mandibular second molar-giving rise to a total of six missing permanent teeth in an apparently healthy individual has not been reported earlier.

Objective: To clarify the effects on the development, position and morphology of the permanent successors of primary molars affected by apical periodontitis (AP). Method: A total of 132 panoramic radiographs of children aged from 4 to 10 were screened out and a total of 159 mandibular second primary molars with chronic apical periodontitis（AP）(93 males and 66 females) were analyzed. The maturation values of permanent successors were interpreted and scored according to Nolla's method and compared with normal ones'. The proportion of abnormalities in the morphology and orientation of permanent successors were counted, and the differences between men and women was analyzed. The distribution of various abnormalities in different age groups was also analyzed. Result: There were significant differences in development of permanent successors in this study compared with the normal ones' in all age groups, among which the differences were statistically significant in males aged in 4,5,7 groups and females aged in 4,6 (P

(1) Background: Pulse oximetry (PO) is an effective method of dental pulp status monitorization but still lacks practical implementation in dentistry, as well as clear reference values for different tooth types. The study's aim was to investigate the age-related variation of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) from the dental pulp during different stages of tooth development in all types of primary and permanent teeth of children. (2) Methods: The pulps of 600 healthy primary and permanent teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, and molars) of patients aged 2–15 years were tested with an adapted PO device, and the results were statistically analyzed; (3) Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between open-apex and closed-apex teeth and between the canines and other tooth types in both primary and permanent dentitions. (4) Conclusions: Values of SpO2 tended to decrease with age progression in both primary and permanent dentitions. Enamel and dentine thickness and their optical properties and the shape and volume of coronal pulp, which differed among tooth types, seemed to have some influence on the reading as well. Background: Few studies report on managing initial proximal caries with sealants, and no reports focus on fluoride‐releasing sealants. Aim: To compare the effectiveness between applications of a fluoride‐releasing sealant and fluoride varnish on proximal enamel caries to control caries progression in permanent teeth. Design: This was a split‐mouth randomized controlled trial in forty‐four 11‐ to 16‐year‐old children with radiographic caries in at least one contralateral pair of teeth with proximal enamel caries. The lesions were evaluated using DIAGNOdent and were also assessed visually after tooth separation. The lesions in each subject were randomly sealed with a fluoride‐releasing sealant (Helioseal® F) or applied with fluoride varnish (Duraphat®). The fluoride varnish‐treated lesion was reapplied at 3 and 6 months. Clinical examination, bitewing radiograph evaluation, and DIAGNOdent assessment were performed at 6 and 12 months. The caries progression outcome variables were regression, no change, and progression. The data were analyzed with the McNemar–Bowker test. Results: Radiographic examination and DIAGNOdent assessment demonstrated no significant differences in the percentages of regression, no change, or progression at the 12‐month follow‐up (p >.05). Conclusion: Applications of a fluoride‐releasing sealant and of fluoride varnish three times resulted in a nonsignificant difference in caries progression of initial proximal caries at the 12‐month follow‐up. Background: In recognition of the risk factors common between oral diseases and various chronic conditions and the intersection between oral health and some sustainable development goals, the current cross-sectional study was designed to quantify the burden of dental caries and identify factors associated with its occurrence in permanent teeth. Methods: Using data from Egypt's population-based survey (2013–2014), two individual-level outcomes; past caries experience (DMFT > 0) and presence of untreated carious lesions (DT > 0) were assessed using the WHO basic methods for oral health surveys. Information on potential explanatory variables including sociodemographic characteristics, exposure to fluoridated water, dental attendance, and dental anxiety was gathered using a structured questionnaire. Stratified multistage cluster random sampling was used to recruit survey participants. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify significant potential risk factors for caries in the permanent dentition of Egyptians. Findings: A total of 9,457 participants were included of which 70.3% had at least one untreated carious lesion. After adjusting for all covariates, analphabetic Egyptians were found to have significantly higher odds of caries experience in permanent dentition DMFT > 0 (OR 1.54, 95% CI [1.20–1.98]), DT > 0 (OR 1.62, 95% CI [1.32–2.00]). Males, however, had significantly lower caries risk DMFT > 0 (OR 0.75, 95% CI [0.67–0.85]), DT > 0 (OR 0.81, 95% CI [0.73–0.89]) when compared to females. Regarding age, mean DMFT scores were significantly lower in age groups (6–15 years) (OR 0.03, 95% CI [0.014; 0.082]), (16– 20 years) (OR 0.09, 95% CI [0.037; 0.23]), and (21–35 years) (OR 0.22, 95% CI [0.09; 0.53]) than among people ≥ 60 years. Recently, biomimetic bioactive biomaterials have been introduced to the market for dental pulp capping. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine any variation between the effect of using TheraCal LC and other bioactive biomaterials for pulp capping is different, as measured by dentin increment and clinical success. The risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias 2 and Newcastle–Ottawa tools for randomized clinical trials and observational studies. A search for relevant articles was performed on five databases. Additionally, the quality of the included studies was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. A summary of individual studies and a meta-analysis were performed. The odds ratio of data from clinical success was combined using a random-effects meta-analysis. The meta-analysis results showed homogeneity between the studies (I2 = 0%). They revealed that the clinical success showed no differences between the patients who received TheraCal LC, light-cured calcium silicate-based biomimetic biomaterial, for dental pulp capping or the comparator biomaterials (p > 0.5). Background/aim: Complicated crown fractures are frequently encountered in the paediatric population and pulpotomy procedures (either partial or coronal) are recommended to maintain the pulp. The aim of this study was to determine the pulp outcomes of permanent teeth with complicated crown fractures treated with pulpotomy in a hospital-setting and to identify potential factors which may influence the outcomes.Material and Methods: Data for this retrospective study were extracted from dental records of patients with complicated crown fractures and treated with pulpotomies at a single centre between 1 January 2015 and 30 August 2019. Pulp outcomes were determined, and the associations between the outcome and independent variables were assessed using the Chi-Square test of independence and the Point-Biserial Correlation Test. Predictors of outcome were identified using the binary logistic regression model.Results: The overall success of pulpotomy in managing traumatised permanent teeth was 61%, which was lower than those previously reported. Pulp healing was seen in 54.1% and 73.7% of teeth treated with partial pulpotomies and coronal pulpotomies, respectively. The presence of a radiographically detectable dentine bridge (p < .01) and longer clinical experience of the clinician (p < .04) was significantly associated with successful outcomes. The history of pain and the stage of root development were identified as significant predictors of the outcome.Conclusion: Pulpotomy is a viable treatment modality for complicated crown fractures in the paediatric population. However, appropriate case selection and further training may be required to ensure improved pulp healing outcomes. A longer follow-up period should be considered to identify late-stage complications. Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis is a common dental disease for which root canal treatment (RCT) has been the standard treatment. However, in many countries, RCT is considered a high-cost treatment that is not covered by public healthcare services; this forces patients to have dental extraction as their only option to relieve pain. In the last decade, several investigations have provided evidence that an alternative treatment known as full pulpotomy (FP) could be an alternative for patients who could not afford the cost of an RCT. Nevertheless, evidence is lacking on the success rate that could be obtained if it is performed in a public dental care clinic (PDCC). The present investigation has two main objectives. To be the first approach of a multicentric feasibility study to find out whether an FP performed by a general practice dentist (GPD) in a PDCC could be suitable and establish its success rate and patient satisfaction. Patients attending a PDCC with symptoms of irreversible pulpitis were invited to participate. FP was performed and followed up at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. The treatment success was assessed by combining three variables, patient satisfaction, clinical, and radiographic outcomes. Forty-one patients from 17 to 78 years old received the intervention. In total, 97.5% were completely satisfied with the treatment and were considered successful since none of the clinical or radiographic variables were present in any of the follow-ups. An FP performed by a GPD in a PDCC could be suitable as a routine treatment for symptomatic irreversible pulpitis due to the excellent success rate and patient satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Radiotherapy makes teeth prone to tooth fractures. However, the relationship between radiotherapy and maximum load to fracture teeth that suffered a crown fracture is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of fracture type, radiation dose, fracture time, and their interactions on maximum load to fracture irradiated teeth. Material and Methods: A total of 140 permanent incisors were divided into two fracture type groups (uncomplicated and complicated) each of which included seven radiation dose subgroups (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60). The test groups were exposed to high‐energy X‐ray at 2 Gy/day, 5 days/week for a total dose of 10–60 Gy. Control groups were not irradiated. The load where the specimen started to break was obtained two different times. The 1st fracture was performed after radiation therapy, and the 2nd fracture was performed after the restoration of these samples. Results: Fracture type had no effect on the maximum load to fracture. In contrast, the maximum load to fracture teeth decreased with increasing radiation doses. Maximum load to fracture the restored teeth was lower than the 1st fracture results. The general linear model procedure revealed a significant interaction between radiation dose and fracture time. Similarly, there was a significant interaction between the fracture type, radiotherapy dose, and fracture time. Maximum load values of teeth with complicated crown fractures restored with fiber posts and composite were not affected by radiation. Conclusion: Teeth that have been subjected to radiotherapy have an increased risk of fracture during dental trauma. However, restoration of the irradiated teeth with fiber posts and composite resin did not affect the maximum load required to fracture them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple systems and associated factors have been described in the literature to assess the prognosis of teeth with periodontal disease. Nowadays there is a tendency among clinicians to consider implants as the best solution after tooth extraction, in cases of teeth with a questionable prognosis. However, the value of the natural tooth must be considered, as the proprioception of the periodontal ligament is preserved, and it adapts to stress during functional loads. We first review the literature focusing on analyzing the factors that should guide decision-making to maintain or extract a tooth with a compromised periodontium. Then, we propose a schematic diagram of prognostic indicators to reflect the main factors to consider and the survival rate that each one represents when preserving or extracting a tooth. In May 2021, the American Association of Endodontists released a Position Statement on Vital Pulp Therapy (VPT) as a conservative means by which to treat inflamed vital pulps in permanent dentition. The objective of this study was to conduct a survey to understand how U.S. dental schools are educating their students regarding VPT. This survey was administered through Qualtrics. Participation was voluntary and anonymous. 43 of 66 (65%) of the dental schools in the United States completed the survey. All schools (n = 43) indicated that students receive a didactic lecture about VPT on permanent teeth. In contrast, 14 of 43 (33%) schools teach VPT on permanent teeth as a technique exercise in the simulation/pre-clinic; 29 of 43 (67%) do not. Fifty percent of newer dental schools (0-15 years) teach VPT on permanent teeth as a simulation/pre-clinic technique exercise compared with 30% of older dental schools (16 years or older). In older schools, VPT is taught by endodontists 59% of the time, whereas the percentage of endodontists teaching in newer schools is roughly half of that (33%). A paradigm shift in endodontics has occurred due to the development and use of bioceramic dental materials. The standard of dental care is shifting in favor of more conservative treatment options. The results of the study indicate that there is a deficiency in the number of U.S. dental schools teaching VPT on permanent teeth as a simulation/pre-clinic technique exercise. Traditionally, teeth with horizontal root fractures resulting in pulp infections have been managed with conventional root canal therapy; however, this technique is associated with a limited success rate. This study presents an unusual case of multiple horizontal root fractures of the maxillary central incisor caused by a traumatic injury. The preservation of vital dental pulp is advantageous for healing root fractures. Therefore, we performed a pulpotomy to maintain vitality of the root pulp. The tooth exhibited no clinical symptoms and regained its normal color. In cases of traumatic root fractures, prompt treatment is important once pulpitis is confirmed. Pulpotomy is highly recommended as this procedure preserves the remaining vital root pulp, thereby enhancing the potential for improved healing. Objectives: The objective of the study was to propose and test a new grading system to quantify the clinical eruption of teeth into the oral cavity. In addition, the study also aimed to apply the grading system to a sample population to determine the chronology and sequence of permanent tooth eruptions, comparing the results with an existing standard table., Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed, and 1220 children aged 5-18 years were selected from five schools in Chennai. The clinical status of permanent tooth eruption was graded using the newly proposed system. The sequence and chronology of permanent tooth eruptions were determined using Probit analysis and compared with those established by Logan and Kronfeld. The difference in stages of eruption between the sexes was analyzed using the ANOVA test., Results: The study sample included 515 boys and 705 girls. A total of 23,218 permanent maxillary and mandibular teeth were examined and graded. Of the 11,085 maxillary teeth, 367 were classified as grade 1, 660 as grade 2, and 10,058 as grade 3. Similarly, of the 12,133 mandibular teeth, 497 were grade 1, 793 were grade 2, and 10,843 were grade 3. The eruption of the maxillary canines, second molars, and mandibular second premolars was observed to have occurred earlier than in the traditional table of tooth eruption. The most significant differences in the stages of eruption between the sexes were observed in the 9-12 age group., Conclusions: The newly proposed grading system was found to be simple, objective, less confusing, and more robust, compared with the existing systems in determining the clinical status of tooth eruptions. Abstract: Objectives: In KSA, numerous studies are conducted to measure the prevalence of dental caries. However, the prevalence of dental caries varies in KSA. This systematic review aims to improve the understanding of the prevalence of dental caries among adults and children residing in KSA. Methods: Online databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched. The Saudi Dental Journal was hand-searched. Study selection and data extraction were conducted in duplicate. The studies on dental caries in the Saudi population were included. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the selected studies. Finally, a narrative synthesis was conducted. Results: Forty-nine cross-sectional studies were identified. Areas of weakness in study design/conduct were low response rates, reliable outcome measurement, and identification and handling of confounding factors. Statistical pooling of data was not appropriate due to substantial heterogeneity, also in part to a variation in geographical location and the target population. Twenty-nine studies presented data for primary dentition. The proportion of dental caries among primary teeth ranged from 0.21 to 1.00. Eighteen studies presented data for permanent dentition. The proportion of dental caries across permanent teeth ranged from 0.05 to 0.99. Conclusions: In general, the methodological quality of the included studies was poor. Dental caries proportion level ranged from 0.05 to 0.99 in permanent teeth, and 0.21 to 1.00 across primary teeth. The available data does not provide a complete assessment of dental caries across KSA. Existing studies are limited in terms of the populations studied for dental caries.

Abstract Background Dental caries have a serious impact on general health and well-being; however, there is a lack of relevant data on the development trends of dental caries in permanent teeth among 12-year-old children in China. We aim to assess long-term trends of dental caries in permanent teeth among 12-year-old children in China and identify the susceptible subgroups based on five consecutive national surveys from 1995 to 2014. Methods A total of 88 972 subjects were extracted from five consecutive national surveys (1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014). Standardized dental examinations were conducted and the oral health status of each subject was recorded. The prevalence of Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth (DMF%), mean Decayed, Missing, Filled teeth score (DMFT) and Caries Filling Ratio (CFR) were used as measurement indicators. Cochran–Armitage trend test was used to evaluate the trends in DMF% and CFR, and multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the trends in DMFT. Results A V-shaped fluctuating upward trend in DMF% during 1995–2014 was observed (Z = − 13.124, P 0.05), and the CFR in 1995–2014 was 17.4%, 22.8%, 19.3%, 23.4% and 15.6%. The present study aimed to analyze the gender dimorphism in odontometrics of permanent maxillary canines using a three-dimensional digital method and to test the accuracy in gender estimation using discriminant function analysis in a sample of the Saudi population. A total of 120 diagnostic dental casts of patients aged 16–29 years were used in the present study. Plaster models of their maxillary dentition obtained from the archives were scanned and digitally measured using a three-dimensional digital method. The mesiodistal width of the right and left maxillary canines and intercanine distance were measured. Gender dimorphism was established using the Garn method. Data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test and discriminant analyses. Males showed larger mean dimensions of canines than females with regard to both mesiodistal width and intercanine distance, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The right maxillary canine mesiodistal width showed a higher percentage of gender dimorphism (3.5%). Discriminant function analysis showed that the overall accuracy of gender prediction was 80.5% for the multivariate analysis. The univariate discriminant function equation revealed that intercanine distance was the most accurate predictor of gender (78%), followed by the right canine mesiodistal width (76.3%). The use of three-dimensional technology for odontometrics presents a promising method, and permanent maxillary canine parameters can be used as an acceptable ancillary tool for gender estimation in forensic science.

Orofacial clefts (OC) represent some of the most common congenital malformations and affect multiple structures in the craniofacial region. There are a wide range of morphological OC types within the spectrum of both non‐syndromic OC (NSOC) and syndromic OC, including cleft lip (CL), cleft lip and palate, (CLP), and cleft palate (CP). Here, we describe the most frequent dental anomalies seen in the permanent dentition of individuals with NSOC, comparing them between the three main cleft types (CL, CLP, and CP). We present these findings from the perspective of prevalence relating to each anomaly, as well as the clinical characteristics and potential impact on the rehabilitation process. The investigation of dental anomalies associated with NSOC is important, helping to expand the phenotypic characterization of NSOC, improve the initial diagnostics, and establish appropriate rehabilitation and counseling. Introduction: To thoroughly plan and execute any dental treatment, the anatomy of the dental root canals is of prime significance. Hence, in this systemic review, we intend to evaluate the cone beam computed and micro-computed tomographic presentations of the root canal morphologies of the secondary teeth. Materials and Methods: We conducted the search for the data from the online sources such as the "EMBASE," "Pubmed," "Scopus," and other sources. Only human studies were collected. Terms searched were cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), micro-computed tomography, permanent teeth, and root canal morphology. The data extraction and meta-analysis were based on the PRISMA guidelines. Results: A total of 170 studies were initially considered for the study. After the application of the inclusion and the exclusion criteria, only ten studies were qualified for the study. In 2 studies, the comparison was done between the conical beam and the microtomograhic views for assessing the root canal anatomies. There were, however, three studies that did not conclude any significant relation between the two imaging systems. When the risk of bias was calculated for the ten studies, there were only low and moderate for the ten included studies. The pooled prevalence among the genders were 21.4% (14.0%-24.6% confidence interval [CI] 95%) and 25.3% (20.0%-30.7% CI 95%), respectively, with high heterogeneity values (= 99.30% and 98.50%, respectively), but no statistical significance (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Both the imaging systems CBCT and the microtomography can be used with accuracy in the evaluation of the anatomic variations of the human root canal. It is useful for controlling caries in challenging patients such as those with special health care needs (SHCN). First aim of this study was to assess parents’ acceptance towards using SDF in SHCN children in their primary and permanent teeth. Second aim was to determine the factors that influence parents’ decisions toward dental treatment options.Patients and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included the parents of SHCN children aged 12 years old and younger who were actively seen in pediatric dentistry clinic at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) and were receiving dental treatment. A previously developed and tested questionnaire was used. The surveyors received training about the questionnaire and participants’ consent was obtained before enrolling in the survey. The statistical significance level was set at P< 0.05.Results: Two hundred twelve participants completed the study questionnaire. Parents had a higher acceptance of SDF use regardless of the tooth location and type when their child had a positive history of pain and/or inflammation (P=0.019). In addition, parents had higher acceptance of SDF staining in primary teeth compared to permanent teeth (P=0.006). Moreover, the acceptance of SDF staining was higher in posterior teeth compared to anterior teeth in both primary and permanent dentition (P< 0.001).Conclusion: Parental acceptance of SDF was higher for primary compared to permanent teeth and posterior compared to anterior teeth in both dentitions, as well as for those with a positive history of dental pain and/or inflammation.Keywords: silver diamine fluoride, special health care needs, parental acceptance, primary teeth, permanent teeth

Introduction and purpose:The first permanent posterior molars begin to grow at the age of six, and the prevention of dental caries on these teeth assumes critical importance in oral health.‎ The present study aimed to assess the effect of ‎distance education on parentschr('39') behavioral intention regarding the prevention of dental caries on the first permanent molars in preschool children in Sanandaj. Methods: This experimental-interventional study was performed in Sanandaj in 2019. ‎According to statistical calculations, 120 parents of preschool children were selected via cluster-random sampling and assigned to two groups of intervention (n=60) and control (n=60). The data collection tool ‎was a researcher-made questionnaire with confirmed validity and reliability‎. The intervention group received distance education. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in Pulpotomy of permanent teeth in irreversible pulpitis. METHODOLOGY: This observational study was conducted in the Department of Operative Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro / Hyderabad, from January to December 2019, through the non-probability purposive sampling technique. Fifty patients were included of both genders, ranging from 18-50 years. Irreversible pulpitis was diagnosed by lingering pain on hot and cold touch with normal peri-apical status. The written consent was taken from all participants. Each patient was evaluated clinically for the presence of pain, and peri-apical radiographs were taken. A visual analog scale (VAS) measured patients' pain before and after treating pulpitis. After treatment of patients, the efficacy of PRF was evaluated by a pain scale. The results were statistically compiled by SPSS version-21 and applying the "t"-test. RESULTS: The severity of pain was observed as; severe in 18 (36%), moderate in 28 (56%) and mild in 4 (8%) patients before starting the treatment. After 24 hours treating with PRF, 40 (80%) patients became pain-free, 1 (1%) with moderate, while the 9 (18%) patients were observed with mild pain; the results obtained were highly significant with a p-value <0.05. Emerging evidence suggests the use of less invasive therapy such as pulpotomy in treating permanent teeth with pulp exposure and signs of pulpitis. Hence, this umbrella review aims to evaluate the available systematic reviews on pulpotomy treated permanent teeth. Articles published between January 1970 and May 2021 were searched in ten electronic databases and five textbooks. Only systematic reviews published in English that examined the use of pulpotomy on either carious or traumatic pulpal exposed in mature or immature permanent teeth with signs of pulpitis were selected. The Corrected Covered Areas (CCAs) were calculated to identify the overlap in primary studies, whereas the AMSTAR 2 assessment tool was used to analyze the risk of bias in each included review. Nine systematic reviews were chosen of which two systematic reviews focused solely on coronal pulpotomy, one on partial pulpotomy, and the remaining focused on both coronal and partial pulpotomies. Overall, only two reviews were rated as 'High Quality'. Umbrella analyses showed that both coronal and partial pulpotomies revealed overall high success rates ranging from 88.5% to 90.6%. However, the currently available evidence on the effects of different pulpal medicaments and restorative materials on the success rate of pulpotomy were still inconclusive. Pulpotomy can be regarded as a promising modality in treating mature and immature permanent teeth with carious pulpal exposure or signs of pulpitis. Background: Traumatic dental injuries are a serious public dental health problem throughout the world. The incidence of traumatic injuries is increasing over the years. Trauma to the permanent anterior teeth is a common finding. Dental trauma is an irreversible pathology that after the occurrence is characterized by a life-long debilitating effect. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and assess factors related to traumatic injuries to permanent anterior teeth among 12–15-year-old children attending private and government schools in Mathura city. Materials and Methods: An epidemiological cross-sectional study was carried out among 1000 school children aged 12–15 years in which 500 children from both government and private schools, respectively, of five geographical zones of Mathura city were randomly selected. Children completed a questionnaire related to the history of trauma to their anterior teeth after which they were examined for type of lip coverage, Angle's molar relationship, and incisor nature of trauma sustained. Statistical analysis: SPSS 21 was carried out using Student's t-test (P < 0.05), Chi-square test, and Mantel–Haenszel test. Results: The prevalence of traumatic injuries was 8.9% and was higher among government school children compared to private school children. The boys and girls with a history of trauma were 67.4% and 32.6%, respectively. The main cause of trauma was fall in the playground (46.0%). The main reason of trauma was because of pushing (65.2%). The most predominant injuries were enamel fractures and the most common place for occurrence was school. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental injuries in Mathura city was high and it has a great potential to be considered as an emerging public health problem.

Introduction: Permanent tooth avulsions (traumatic extraction; total luxation) are one ofthe most severe permanent tooth injuries and can occur as single injuries or associated with other dental injuries or injuries to the face and jaws region. They are defined as the luxation of teeth from the alveoli with complete rupture of periodontal fibres, or with one part attached to the rootcementum and the other to the alveolar bone, thus compromising the dental pulp, root cementum,and alveolar bone. The high prevalence and numerous negative consequences on the stomatognathic systems they have suggest permanent tooth avulsions should be regarded as an important public health problem. The aim: is to point out the therapeutic possibilities of permanent tooth avulsion that can ensure their longer survival in the oral cavity. Conclusion: The treatment strategy for avulsed permanent teeth is always based on limiting root canal infection and periradicular inflammation, shifting the balance from unfavourable (replacement resorption) to favourable (periodontal) healing. The success of therapy and periodontal healing depend on the duration and conditions of extraoral tooth preservation, the degree of damage to the periodontal ligament, and the condition of the pulp.

Introduction: The effectiveness of caries treatment depends on many factors, such as the condition of dental tissues, the stage of root development, the period of dentition, the quality of preparation and isolation, the optimal choice of material for restoration. The problem of choosing the filling material is acute in each treatment of caries in children with mixed and permanent dentition. The aim: Todetermine and statistically substantiate parameters for choosing restorative material for permanent teeth in children with different stages of root development. Aim. Assessment of characteristics of non-syndromic hypodontia (NSH) in permanent teeth (PT) in a group of Romanian children and adolescents. Material and method. Descriptive retrospective observational study on dental files and orthopantomograms of 138 patients (59 boys) aged between 5-17 years (mean age = 11.96±3.13 years) from Pedodontics Clinic Bucharest and from 3 private clinics. The topography of hypodontia, number of missing teeth and their distribution according to age and sex were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0 (p < 0.05). Results. The most cases were diagnosed at the age of 9-12 years (44.92%). 42.76% of the missing teeth were in boys and 57.24% in girls, with boys:girls ratio = 1:1.32. 44.2% of patients had hypodontia in the mandible, 36.2% – in maxilla and 19.6% – in both arches simultaneosly; 50% in lateral area, 41.3% in front area and 8.7% in both areas. 75.30% of patients had 1-2 missing teeth, with mean value of 2.02 missing teeth/patient (1.98/boys and 2.05/ girls, NS, p > 0.05). The most frequent teeth affected by NSH were second lower premolars (37.27%), followed by upper lateral incisors (29.75%) and upper second premolars (16.48%). Conclusions. In the study sample reduced unilateral lower hypodontia was most frequent. Early diagnose of NSH is important in order to apply specific treatments as quickly as possible, ensuring the harmonious growth and development of the dento-maxillary apparatus.

Introduction. The occurrence of hypoplastic lesions with areas of enamel and/or dentine lost, due to pulpal infections and periapical lesions in temporary teeth, especially when there's a crypt rupture of the permanent germ, is known as Turner tooth or Turner hypoplasia. This article allows to the others doctors to identify the etiology and to assess the extension of premolar affection to predict the success of the possible restauration or to consider the extraction of the tooth. Dental caries is a commonly progressive disease that proceeds through various degrees of severity that a dentist can detect. The aims of the in vivo study were to assess the accuracy of the individual model (near-infrared light transillumination [NILT] device, visual and radiographic examinations) in detecting occlusal caries, and to evaluate the performance of visual and NILT device combination for occlusal caries detection in deciding the treatment options. Fifty-two non-cavitated occlusal surfaces from 16 patients were assessed with three different diagnostic devices in random order. Identified lesions were prepared and validated. Logistic regression analysis was performed for each method. The sensitivity and specificity values for each method and the combined models were statistically measured using RStudio version 0.97.551. At the enamel level, visual detection was the most sensitive method (0.88), while NILT was the most specific (0.93). NILT scored the highest for sensitivity (0.93) at the dentine level and visual detection scored the highest for specificity (0.88). Visual detection + NILT model was significantly better (p = 0.04) compared to visual detection or NILT alone (df = 1). The visual-NILT combination is a superior model in detecting occlusal caries on permanent teeth. The model provided surplus value in caries detection hence improving the treatment decision-making in occlusal surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objective: In orthodontics, reconstructive and aesthetic dentistry, knowing about size of teeth can help in better reconstruction. Tooth size is mainly affected by two factors of genetic and environment. The aim of this study is determination of mesiodistal size of casts prepared from permanent teeth in both sides of jaw in male and female patients. Materials and methods: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 250 diagnostic alginate casts prepared from orthodontics patients. The biggest mesiodistal size, from medially anatomic contact point to distally anatomical contact point, was recorded with a digital caliper. One person did the measurements and accuracy was calculated as 0.01. Results and conclusion: In maxillary teeth, higher size was recorded than mandibular teeth. Mesiodistal size of right canine teeth (in both jaws) and mesiodistal size of the mandibular second premolar (in both sides) in men was significantly higher than women. Total mesiodistal size of maxillary and mandibular teeth at both right and left sides in men and women was same. The results can be useful in reconstructive purposes when a natural size is required by dentists.

Abstract Background Radiotherapy, applied to the head and neck region, can cause radiation side effects such as reduction of saliva and radiation caries. The aim of this study was to perform an in vitro assessment of the effects of radiation therapy on the morphological, mechanical, and chemical properties of primary and permanent teeth. Methods One hundred four extracted human teeth (52 impacted wisdom teeth, 52 primary molar teeth) were used. The teeth were divided into two parts in the mesiodistal direction. Of the 98 teeth, the vestibular sections were used for the vickers analysis and lingual sections were used for the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis. The teeth in the experimental group were fixed to wax models. Each model had an equal number of teeth (n = 7). The doses were applied to the teeth for 6 weeks; 5 week days and 2Gy daily. After the radiotherapy was conducted weekly, a wax model was taken from radiation reception. Along with the elemental contents (Na, K, Mg, P, and Ca) of the teeth, enamel and dentin microhardness was evaluated, and SEM analyzes were performed on 6 teeth. The aim of the study was to estimate the efficiency of the local ozone and contact darsonvalization or root canal system of permanent teeth with chronic periodontitis based on clinical and microbiological studies. We observed eight patients aged 6 to 13 years with chronic apical periodontitis (ICD-10). Microbiological research includes conducting bacteriological seeding biomaterial (16 root canals), isolated from the contents of the root canals of permanent teeth with incomplete root formation in children with chronic apical periodontitis. The study found ozone therapy is effective against microorganisms containing the root canal of the permanent teeth in children, which would substantially reduce the number of possible odontogenic inflammatory diseases of maxillo-facial area.

The aim of this research was the study of registered in the root canal and periapical tissues of permanent teeth with children’s incomplete root development, chronic periodontal disease and its exacerbation in children residing in a major industrial center of Western Siberia (omsk). We observed 33 patients aged 6 to 13 years, 16 patients were diagnosed with chronic periodontitis in the acute stage, the remaining children - chronic apical periodontitis. Microbiocenosis periodontal complex in the state of complicated caries in primary school children showed the diversity of the microbiota of both the prokaryotes (aerobic, anaerobic, microaerophilic, facultative anaerobic bacteria), and to eukaryotes (yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida).

Objective: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in India. The secondary objective was to evaluate the prevalence rate according to the differences in gender, age, regions, type of TDI and risk factors associated with TDI. Methods: The PubMed, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane, CINHAL, and Scopus databases, along with the Public Health Electronic Library, TRoPHI and DoPHER were searched from 1st March to 15thApril 2019 without any restriction of language and year of publication. The qualitative synthesis was done regarding the demographics, study methods, cause of trauma, geographic location, increased overjet and inadequate lip coverage. The meta-analysis was undertaken with STATA-14 software (USA). The pooled prevalence of TDI was calculated using data extracted from 48 studies included in qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis. A sub-group meta-analysis was done by extraction of the data for age groups of 6 years and >6 years. Results: The pooled prevalence of TDI in Indian population was 13 cases in 100 individuals. The prevalence of TDI for age groups of ≤6 was 15% (males, 15%; females, 16%) and for >6 years was 12% (males, 13%; females, 8%). The most common cause of TDI was falls, and most frequent location was home. The odds ratio for occurrence of TDI and inadequate lip-coverage was 3.35 and overjet greater than 3 mm was 3.53. Conclusions: The pooled prevalence of TDI was 13% and slightly higher in children less than 6 years of age. Inadequate lip coverage and increased overjet are the risk factors associated with TDI. Heterogeneity was observed among the studies in terms of design, variables recorded, sampling, study methods and statistical methods. Majority of them also suffered from moderate to high risk of bias.

Background: permanent molar (M3) formation, morphology, and agenesis vary greatly between individuals. This study examines how removing the lower first permanent molar affects the position and angle of the developing third molar in 7- to 10-year-olds. Method: Radiographs of Two groups from southern Iraq were identified: those who had one or more first permanent molars extracted between ages 7 and 10 and those who did not. Both groups had panoramic radiographs taken at 8.5 and 10 years before extraction. 80 third molars were extracted, and 50 had retained first permanent molars. Objective. To determine the prevalence and distribution of developmental dental anomalies (DDA) in children and adolescents. Material and method. A retrospective cross-sectional study using panoramic radiographs (OPGs) performed for different purposes, from patients aged up to 18 years. After the individual analysis of the radiographs, the prevalence and distribution of DDA were determined according to the topography and the sex of the patients from which the OPGs came. Statistical data processing was performed with the IBM SPSS Statistics 24 program, for p ≤ 0.05. Results. 755 OPGs were analyzed, out of which 43 (5.69%) were found having DDA. The prevalence of DDA, relative to the whole group: 2.91% for hypodontias; 1.58% for supernumerary teeth; 1.05% for radicular dilacerations; 0.13% for localized microdontia. DDA distribution: 51.16% hypodontias; 27.90% supernumerary teeth; 2.32% microdontia, 18.60% dilacerations. Conclusions. The prevalence of DDA in the permanent dentition in children and adolescents, estimated only from the orthopantomographic point of view, was 5.69%.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an inherited development anomaly of the skeletal system that is also classified as an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. This is due to a gene mutation on chromosome 6p21 that encodes core binding factor activity a-1 (CBFA1), a member of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) found on the short arm of chromosome 6. CCD is a scarce condition and its occurrence is about one per million births. It primarily affects bones that are derived from both endochondral and intramembranous ossification. It is identified by certain clinical and radiological features including open cranial sutures and open anterior fontanelle, aplastic or hypoplastic clavicles, wormian bones, short stature, deformities of the pelvic bones, and various skeletal changes. Patients usually show class III malocclusion because of mandibular hyperplasia and mid-face hypoplasia.
