Schubert calculus has been in the intersection of several fast developing areas of mathematics for a long time. Originally invented as the description of the cohomology of homogeneous spaces it has to be redesigned when applied to other generalized cohomology theories such as the equivariant, the quantum cohomology, K-theory, and cobordism. All this cohomology theories are different deformations of the ordinary cohomology. In this note we show that there is in some sense the universal deformation of Schubert calculus which produces the above mentioned by specialization of the appropriate parameters. We build on the work of Lerche Vafa and Warner. The main conjecture there was that the classical cohomology of a hermitian symmetric homogeneous manifold is a Jacobi ring of an appropriate potential. We extend this conjecture and provide a simple proof. Namely we show that the cohomology of the hermitian symmetric space is a Jacobi ring of a certain potential and the equivariant and the quantum cohomology and K-theory is a Jacobi ring of a particular deformation of this potential. This suggests to study the most general deformations of the Frobenius algebra of cohomology of these manifolds by considering the versal deformation of the appropriate potential. The structure of the Jacobi ring of such potential is a subject of well developed singularity theory. This gives a potentially new way to look at the classical, the equivariant, the quantum and other flavors of Schubert calculus.

Let R be a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let H be a simple algebraic group of type F_4 over R such that H_K is the automorphism group of a 27-dimensional Jordan algebra which is a first Tits construction. If char K is not 2, this means precisely that the f_3 invariant of H_K is trivial. We prove that if an H-torsor is rationally trivial, then it is trivial over R. This result is a particular case of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture. It continues the recent series of papers by I. Panin, N.Vavilov and the authors, and complements the result of V. Chernousov on the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for groups of type F_4 with trivial g_3 invariant., Comment: 6 pages

In the present notes we generalize the classical work of Demazure [Invariants sym\'etriques entiers des groupes de Weyl et torsion] to arbitrary oriented cohomology theories and formal group laws. Let G be a split semisemiple linear algebraic group over a field and let T be its split maximal torus. We construct a generalized characteristic map relating the so called formal group ring of the character group of T with the cohomology of the variety of Borel subgroups of G. The main result of the paper says that the kernel of this map is generated by W-invariant elements, where W is the Weyl group of G. As one of the applications we provide an algorithm (realized as a Macaulau2 package) which can be used to compute the ring structure of an oriented cohomology (algebraic cobordism, Morava $K$-theories, connective K-theory, Chow groups, K_0, etc.) of a complete flag variety., Comment: 36pp. xypic

We outline how one can understand the Skyrme model from the modern perspective. We review the quantization of the SU(3) rotations of the Skyrmion, leading to the exotic baryons that cannot be made of three quarks. It is shown that in the limit of large number of colours the lowest-mass exotic baryons can be studied from the kaon-Skyrmion scattering amplitudes, an approach known after Callan and Klebanov. We follow this approach and find, both analytically and numerically, a strong Theta+ resonance in the scattering amplitude that is traced to the rotational mode. The Skyrme model does predict an exotic resonance Theta+ but grossly overestimates the width. To understand better the factors affecting the width, it is computed by several methods giving, however, identical results. In particular, we show that insofar as the width is small, it can be found from the transition axial constant. We present a semiclassical approach to the SU(N) Yang--Mills theory whose partition function at nonzero temperatures is approximated by a saddle point -- an ensemble of an infinite number of interacting dyons of N kinds. The ensemble is governed by an exactly solvable 3d quantum field theory, allowing calculation of correlations functions relevant to confinement. We show that known criteria of confinement are satisfied in this semiclassical approximation: (i) the average Polyakov line is zero below some critical temperature, and nonzero above it, (ii) a quark-antiquark pair has linear rising potential energy, (iii) the average spatial Wilson loop falls off exponentially with the area, (iv) N^2 gluons are canceled out from the spectrum, (v) the critical deconfinement temperature is in good agreement with lattice data. We construct the integration measure over the moduli space of an arbitrary number of N kinds of dyons of the pure SU(N) gauge theory at finite temperatures. The ensemble of dyons governed by the measure is mathematically described by a (supersymmetric) quantum field theory that is exactly solvable and is remarkable for a number of striking features: 1) The free energy has the minimum corresponding to the zero average Polyakov line, as expected in the confining phase; 2)The correlation function of two Polyakov lines exhibits a linear potential between static quarks in any N-ality non-zero representation, with a calculable string tension roughly independent of temperature; 3) The average spatial Wilson loop falls off exponentially with its area and the same string tension; 4) At a critical temperature the ensemble of dyons rearranges and de-confines; 5)The estimated ratio of the critical temperature to the square root of the string tension is in excellent agreement with the lattice data., Comment: 26 pp. Construction of general N-ality = k strings added. Let G be a linear algebraic group over a field F and X be a projective homogeneous G-variety such that G splits over the function field of X. In the present paper we introduce an invariant of G called J-invariant which characterizes the motivic behaviour of X. This generalizes the respective notion invented by A. Vishik in the context of quadratic forms. As a main application we obtain a uniform proof of all known motivic decompositions of generically split projective homogeneous varieties (Severi-Brauer varieties, Pfister quadrics, maximal orthogonal Grassmannians, G2- and F4-varieties) as well as provide new examples (exceptional varieties of types E6, E7 and E8). In the Relativistic Mean Field Approximation three quarks in baryons from the lowest octet and the decuplet are bound by the self-consistent chiral field, and there are additional quark-antiquark pairs whose wave function also follows from the mean field. We present a generating functional for the 3-quark, 5-quark, 7-quark ... wave functions inside the octet, decuplet and antidecuplet baryons treated in a universal and compact way. The 3-quark components have the SU(6)-symmetric wave functions but with specific relativistic corrections which are generally not small. In particular, the normalization of the 5-quark component in the nucleon is about 50% of the 3-quark component. We give explicitly the 5-quark wave functions of the nucleon and of the exotic Theta+. We develop a formalism how to compute observables related to the 3- and 5-quark Fock components of baryons, and apply it to estimate the Theta+ width which turns out to be very small, 2-4 MeV, although with a large uncertainty., Comment: 25 pp., 11 figs, minor corrections

We present a generating functional producing quark wave functions of all Fock states in the octet, decuplet and antidecuplet baryons in the mean field approximation, both in the rest and infinite momentum frames. In particular, for the usual octet and decuplet baryons we get the SU(6)-symmetric wave functions for their 3-quark component but with specific corrections from relativism and from additional quark-antiquark pairs. For the exotic antidecuplet baryons we obtain the 5-quark wave function., Comment: 20 p., 6 figs

We discuss the relatively low mass and narrow width prediction for the exotic baryon Theta+, and comment on recent statements by R.L. Jaffe on the subject. We reaffirm that a narrow width of 3.6-11.2 MeV follows from the equations of our 1997 paper., Comment: 5 pages

We calculate exactly functional determinants for quantum oscillations about periodic instantons with non-trivial value of the Polyakov line at spatial infinity. Hence, we find the weight or the probability with which calorons with non-trivial holonomy occur in the Yang--Mills partition function. The weight depends on the value of the holonomy, the temperature, Lambda_QCD, and the separation between the BPS monopoles (or dyons) which constitute the periodic instanton. At large separation between constituent dyons, the quantum measure factorizes into a product of individual dyon measures, times a definite interaction energy. We present an argument that at temperatures below a critical one related to Lambda_QCD, trivial holonomy is unstable, and that calorons ``ionize'' into separate dyons., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figs, minor corrections

We discuss a possibility that linear Regge trajectories originate not from gluonic strings connecting quarks, as it is usually assumed, but from pion excitations of light hadrons. From this point of view, at large angular momenta both baryons and mesons lying on linear Regge trajectories are slowly rotating thick strings of pion field, giving rise to a universal slope computable from the pion decay constant. The finite resonance widths are mainly due to the semiclassical radiation of pion fields by the rotating elongated chiral solitons. Quantum fluctuations about the soliton determine a string theory which, being quantized, gives the quantum numbers for Regge trajectories., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

We analyze what consequences has the observation of exotic pentaquark baryons on the location of the non-exotic baryons belonging to the antidecuplet. We suggest that there must be a new nucleon state at 1650-1690 MeV and a new Sigma baryon at 1760-1810 MeV., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. Missing reference added

We generalize the usual octet, decuplet and exotic antidecuplet and higher baryon multiplets to any number of colours Nc. We show that the multiplets fall into a sequence of bands with O(1/Nc) splittings inside the band and O(1)splittings between the bands characterized by "exoticness", that is the number of extra quark-antiquark pairs needed to compose the multiplet. Each time one adds a pair the baryon mass is increased by the same constant which can be interpreted as a mass of a quark-antiquark pair. At the same time, we prove that masses of exotic rotational multiplets are reliably determined at large Nc from collective quantization of chiral solitons., Comment: 13 p., 5 figs. We argue that in the pure N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to the maximal Abelian subgroup. In particular, colored gluino condensate is nonzero. It invalidates, in a subtle way, the so-called strong-coupling instanton calculation of the (normal) gluino condensate and resolves the long-standing paradox why its value does not agree with that obtained by other methods., Comment: 17 p

Quantum Yang-Mills theory can be rewritten in terms of gauge-invariant variables: it has the form of the so-called BF gravity, with an additional `aether' term. The BF gravity based on the gauge group SU(N) is actually a theory of high spin fields (up to J=N) with high local symmetry mixing up fields with different spins -- like in supergravity but without fermions. At N going to infinity one gets a theory with an infinite tower of spins related by local symmetry, similar to what one has in string theory. We write down the Yang-Mills partition function and the average Wilson loop in terms of local gauge-invariant variables being the six components of the metric tensor of dual space. The Wilson loop becomes the trace of the parallel transporter in curved space, else called the gravitational holonomy. We show that the external coordinates mapping the 3d curved space into a flat 6d space play the role of glueball fields, and there is a natural mechanism for the mass gap generation., Comment: 7 pages

In the limit of large number of colors N the nucleon consisting of N quarks is heavy, and one can treat it semiclassically, like the large-Z Thomas--Fermi atom. The role of the semiclassical field binding the quarks in the nucleon is played by the pion or chiral field; its saddle-point distribution inside the nucleon is called the chiral soliton. The old Skyrme model for this soliton is an over-simplification. One can do far better by exploiting a realistic and theoretically-motivated effective chiral lagrangian presented in this paper. As a result one gets not only the static characteristics of the nucleon in a fair accordance with the experiment (such as masses, magnetic moments and formfactors) but also much more detailed dynamic characteristics like numerous parton distributions. We recall the non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop in the Yang-Mills theory and discuss its meaning. Then we move to `gravitational Wilson loops', i.e. to holonomies in curved d=2,3,4 spaces and derive non-Abelian Stokes theorems for these quantities as well, which are similar to our formula in the Yang-Mills theory. In particular we derive an elegant formula for the holonomy in the case of a constant-curvature background in three dimensions and a formula for small-area loops in any number of dimensions., Comment: 25 pages

We present the non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop in various forms and discuss its meaning. Its validity has been recently questioned by Faber, Ivanov, Troitskaya and Zach. We demonstrate that all points of their criticism are based on mistakes in mathematics. We perform the dual transformation of the Yang-Mills theory in d=3 dimensions using the Wilson action on the cubic lattice. The dual lattice is made of tetrahedra triangulating a 3-dimensional curved manifold but embedded into a flat 6-dimensional space (for the SU(2) gauge group). In the continuum limit the theory can be reformulated in terms of 6-component gauge-invariant scalar fields having the meaning of the external coordinates of the dual lattice sites. These 6-component fields induce a metric and a curvature of the 3-dimensional dual colour space. The Yang-Mills theory can be identically rewritten as a quantum gravity theory with the Einstein-Hilbert action but purely imaginary Newton constant, plus a homogeneous `matter' term. Interestingly, the theory can be formulated in a gauge-invariant and local form without explicit colour degrees of freedom., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures

We argue that asymptotically linear static potential is built in into the common procedure of extracting it from lattice Wilson loop measurements. To illustrate the point, we extract the potential by the standard lattice method in a model vacuum made of instantons. A beautiful infinitely rising linear potential is obtained in the case where the true potential is actually flattening. We argue that the flux tube formation might be also an artifact of the lattice procedure and not necessarily a measured physical effect. We conclude that at present the rising potential is known for sure up to no more than about 0.7 fm. It may explain why no screening has been clearly observed so far for adjoint sources and for fundamental sources but with dynamical fermions. Finally, we speculate on how confinement could be achieved even if the static potential in the pure glue theory is not infinitely rising., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. We derive a new non-abelian Stokes theorem by rewriting the Wilson loop as a gauge-invariant area integral, at the price of integrating over an auxiliary field from the coset SU(N) / [U(1)]^{N-1} space. We then introduce the relativistic quark--monopole interaction as a Wess--Zumino-type action, and extend it to the non-abelian case. We show that condensation of monopoles and confinement can be investigated in terms of the behaviour of the monopole world lines.
