International audience; The quantitative determination of moganite in flint and chert plays an important role in the characterisation of these silica rocks and in the study of their genesis and evolution. Both Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy promise to be rapid and costeffective tools for such studies. However, the use of vibrational spectra of moganite in silica rocks is hampered by the proximity of specific moganite bands with IR and Raman vibrations bands of non-bridging Si-O in silanol (SiOH) groups of chalcedony, the main coexisting silica phase. This may result in spectral interferences that lead to an overestimation of the moganite concentration. In order to calibrate quantitative moganite detection using IR and Raman spectroscopy, the spectra of chalcedony/moganite mixtures were studied using spectral decomposition. Heat treatment of the samples prior to their analysis is found to reduce the contribution of chalcedony silanol-bands to the measurement of the moganite bands, facilitating in this way the interpretation of the spectra. A new calibration curve is proposed for quantitative moganite detection using Raman spectroscopy. Infrared spectroscopy is also found to be useful for moganite quantification: a molar absorption coefficient of 43 L/mol cm for the specific moganite-band at 575 cm–1 is derived for the first time. The exact position of the specific IR and Raman moganite-bands is found to depend on whether the mineral occurs intermixed with chalcedony or in pure form. This study opens new prospects for quantitative moganite detection in silica rocks using vibrational spectroscopy.

This treatment involving a smooth thermal exposure procures an improvement of the ease of detachment and of the cutting properties of the flints. The origin of these new properties remains misunderstood. High resolution large angle neutron scattering (Barotron detector) is used to describe the structural modifications occurring after the thermal treatment. The comparison of the scattering exhibited by native silica flints and flints treated at the Neothilic age does not show a structural change but indicates a significant increase of the quantity of liquid water trapped in the treated flint. It is suggested that the Neolithic treatment was proceeded in several steps including a prior wetting of the flint and then a thermal treatment closing the porosity and trapping the liquid water inside the silica flint.

The Neolithic period Chassey culture in southern France from 4200 to 3500 Cal. BC developed a specialized lithic technology for flint bladelets that used a heating process as an essential part of the production. Experimental archaeology demonstrated that the heating should take place at low temperature somewhere around 250°C. To identify and quantify the physical transformations of flint at low temperature, laboratory and synchrotron experiences have been carried out on a set of heated Barremo-Bedoulian flint samples. According to our measurements, this flint consists of a nanocrystalline matrix of quartz and moganite. Evolution of mesoporous structure was observed during heat treatment. The flint transformed between 200-300°C, resulting in a reduction in the size and volume of porosity. The densification of flint is linked to changes on the nanocrystalline grain boundaries, and it is thought to have a direct impact on the improved mechanical properties from the Chassey culture lithic productions.

International audience; This paper describes the microstructure of a Roman ferrous nail through its observation by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of pearlitic colonies and ferritic grains are detailed and the relationship between pearlitic colonies and ferrite in Roman nails is explicitly demonstrated for the first time. Observations also confirm the presence of dislocations in ferritic grains and attest to the existence of very small carbide precipitates that have not been pointed out previously in standard archaeometric studies.

Mineralogical composition of 11 samian ware samples from La Graufesenque has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The sherds are dated between SO and 100 BC, the period of the largest production. Firing temperatures were above 1000°C and probably around 1050°C. These results are in agreement with a standardisation of samian industry. The slip of one sherd has been investigated by microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The slip contains more Fe and K, and less Ca than the bulk., La composition minérale de 11 échantillons de céramiques sigillées de la Graufesenque a été analysée par diffraction de rayons X. Tous ces tessons appartiennent à la période de la plus grande production des ateliers (entre 50 et 100 ap. J.-C.). Leur température de cuisson, supérieure à 1000°C, est vraisemblablement de l'ordre de 1050°C. Les résultats confirment aussi, pour cette période, une grande homogénéité de fabrication. L'engobe d'un tesson a été conjointement étudié par microscopie analytique et par diffraction X. International audience; The thermal expansion properties of the ceramic compositions Ba1-yLayTi1-y/4O3 (y = 0.0, 0.026, 0.036, 0.054) and Ba1-yBi2y/3Ti1-xZrxO3 (y = 0.10; x = 0.0, 0.04, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) were determined in the temperature range 120-700 K. We report the temperature-dependent measurements of the strain, thermal expansion coefficient and the magnitude of root mean square polarization. The results obtained are discussed together with the data on the structure and dielectric properties.

Terra sigillata ceramic is a fine ware produced during the Roman period. Its great success was due to its remarkable gloss, also called slip, which provides a bright deep red aspect. TEM-EELS and XRD techniques were used to understand the sub-microscopic origins of this singular aspect. Analysis investigations on five samples of two important Gaul workshops are described here. It appears that those samples have the same slip structure: sub-microscopic hematite and corundum crystals in a glass matrix. The matrix does not contain metallic ions, hematite is substituted in Al and Ti while corundum is substituted in Fe. The two crystal populations are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix and, together, give the specific red-orange colour to the sigillata.

The changes in lattice and molecular structure of the dodecatungstophosphoric acid hexahydrate (WPA-6) induced by the temperature treatment between 244 and 373 K, were studied in situ by X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The increase in temperature was followed with the slight modifications of Keggin's anion, expansion of the unit cell and an abrupt change in the crystallite microstructure of WPA-6 what was monitored by the Rietveld and Warren-Averbach methods. Those two discontinuities in the thermal expansion of 4 0 0 interplanar spacing, observed at about 320 and 340 K, are result of the non-convergent reversible phase transition, produced by partial reduction and oxidation of the tungsten, known as an ion with mixed valence. The extraordinary compression of P-Oa bond length [1.61(1) angstroms at 298 K and 1.44(2) angstroms at 373 K], broadening and splitting of V1(P-Oa) bond with the increase in temperature, the abrupt change of crystallite dimension and the strain at 338 K, indicate a modification in the charge distribution followed with the partial reduction of W6+ into W5+ ions (i.e. 'heteropoly blue' formation). The partial reduction is closely related to the change in a dynamic equilibrium between different proton species and hydrated proton entities, such as oxonium H3O+, dioxonium H5O2+, triaquaoxonium H7O3+, etc.

We present results of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microprobe analyses of ancient ceramic cross-sections aiming at deciphering the different firing protocols used for their production. Micro-focused XRF elemental mapping, Fe chemical mapping and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy were performed on pre-sigillata ceramics from southern Gaul, and terra Sigillata vessels from Italy and southern Gaul. Pieces from the different workshops and regions showed significant difference in the starting clay material, clay conditioning and kiln firing condition. By contrast, sherds from the same workshop exhibited more subtle differences and possible misfirings. Understanding the precise firing conditions and protocols would allow recreation of kilns for various productions. Furthermore, evolution and modification of kiln design would shed some light on how ancient potters devised solutions to diverse technological problems they encountered.

Ceramics produced by the numerous active kilns during the Song dynasty (960-1279) are now considered exceptional works of art. Through their understated and subtle glazes, they illustrate the strong aesthetic considerations of the cultivated officials that made this time period one of the most artistically developed time of China [1]. Among those, black-to-brown glazes are a diverse group that encompasses productions from all over the territory, such as those of Cízhōu (Héběi), Jízhōu (Jiāngxī), Yàozhōu (Shǎnxī) or Jiàn (Fújiàn) kiln complexes. The ones produced in the latter have been particularly appreciated due to the development of whipped tea under this dynasty.This interdisciplinary work focuses on physico-chemical analyses of this type of glazes and the study of their nomenclature in the specialised literature from an art history standpoint.After an overview of the black-to-brown ceramics manufactured before the Song dynasty and the historical context associated with this time period, the part focusing on the nomenclature divides these ware in three types: monochromatic glazes, glazes decorated with abstract patterns and glazes decorated with figurative designs. Specific phrases used in French and English to characterise each subtype are presented, as well as the ones used in Chinese when they were found.Analyses of the glazes were implemented to document the crystallisation of dendritic ε‑Fe2O3, a rare iron oxide often considered as an intermediate structure between maghemite and hematite [2], which is common in the brown areas of those glazes. Several complementary analytical techniques were implemented to characterise chemically and structurally a selection of archaeological samples, recreations and test samples manufactured in traditional conditions and raw materials fired under controlled conditions.These analyses allowed to characterise in depth the dendritic ε‑Fe2O3 crystals embedded in the glaze and to detect cationic substitutions, in particular aluminium substitutions which may stabilize this phase and thus explain its omnipresence in ancient materials. They also highlighted non-systematic growth of crystals, such as anorthite, at the interface between the glaze and the body of some sherds from the Yàozhōu kilns (Shǎnxī). Test samples set the basis to chemically formalise the growth mechanism of the ε‑Fe2O3 dendrites taking into account the aluminium substitutions, which rate increases with the crystalline size. Finally, the raw materials fired under controlled conditions were studied to investigate the influence of several heating conditions on the development of the ε‑Fe2O3 phase at the surface of the glazes and the anorthite at the interface between the glaze and the body.[1]M. Différentes techniques de caractérisations chimiques et structurales complémentaires ont été utilisées sur une sélection d’échantillons archéologiques, de recréations et d’éprouvettes tests fabriquées dans des conditions traditionnelles ainsi que des matières premières cuites en conditions contrôlées.Ces analyses ont permis de caractériser les dendrites de phase ε‑Fe2O3 présentes dans ces glaçures et d’y révéler la présence de substitutions cationiques, en particulier par l’aluminium qui peuvent la stabiliser et expliquer ainsi son omniprésence dans les objets anciens. Elles ont également mis en lumière des phénomènes non systématiques de croissances cristallines, notamment d’anorthite, à l’interface entre la pâte et la glaçure de quelques échantillons anciens du four de Yàozhōu (Shǎnxī). L’étude des éprouvettes tests a servi de base pour proposer un mécanisme de croissance prenant en compte ces substitutions, dont le taux augmente de manière significative avec la taille des cristaux. Ce chapitre présente l'état actuel des connaissances sur le verre au plomb islamique d'un point de vue analytique et isotopique, depuis son apparition aux 8e/9e siècles. Il commence par le verre au plomb trouvé en Orient, avant de passer à l'Ibérie, où, ces dernières années, une multitude de différents types de verre au plomb ont été découverts dans des vestiges archéologiques.

Blue-and-white porcelain, or qinghua porcelain, is one of the most famous types of ceramics in the world. Produced since the 13th century in Jingdezhen kilns (Jiangxi Province), it is defined by the use of an underglazed decoration based on transition elements (mainly cobalt but also iron or manganese). This type of porcelain presents a layered structure easily divided in different systems (glaze, pigment zone, body, body-glaze interface in white zones). Our thesis is dedicated to the microstructural study of the different systems and sub-systems by a "reverse-engineering" approach to uncover the manufacturing process. To do so, we studied 33 samples from the Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Middle Qing (1736-1850) Dynasties, produced in Jingdezhen, using a multi-analytical approach. This study highlighted the uniformity in chemical composition and firing conditions of the body implying the standardisation of the manufacturing process. Glaze chemical compositions are also rather homogeneous except from some glazes richer in calcium, which could allow the use of a lower firing temperature. The main technological evolutions concern the underglazed blue pigment. The chemical composition confirmed two geological origins: a Fe-rich cobalt probably from Persia used during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), and a local Mn-rich and Ni-rich cobalt used since the Middle Ming Dynasty (1279-1368). We also observed the development of a synthesis pigment, cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4), during the Middle Ming Dynasty (1436-1572). It was probably synthesised from the high temperature reaction of cobalt ore with an alumino-siliceous clay. The cobalt pigment is then mixed with Ca-rich phases leading to the growth of anorthite crystals (CaAl2Si2O8) around the pigment grains during firing. The bright blue colour is obtained with the presence of large Co-rich pigment grains surrounded by a thick anorthite layer. Finally, the microstructure study allows us to identify "deviant" microstructure on wares which could be modern copies.; La porcelaine à décor bleu et blanc, ou porcelaine qinghua, est l'une des céramiques les plus célèbres au monde. Produite dès le XIIIe siècle dans les fours de Jingdezhen (province du Jiangxi), elle se caractérise par l'usage d'un décor sous glaçure à base de métaux de transition (cobalt principalement mais également fer ou manganèse). Ce type de porcelaine est constitué d'une structure en couche qui se prête particulièrement bien à une décomposition en différents systèmes (glaçure, zone pigmentaire, pâte, interface entre la pâte et la glaçure dans les zones sans décor). Notre thèse a pour objet l'étude de la microstructure des différents systèmes et sous-systèmes constituants la porcelaine afin, par une approche de type " rétro-ingénierie ", de remonter aux procédés techniques à l'origine de la fabrication de ces objets. Pour ce faire, 33 échantillons datés des dynasties Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644) et Qing moyenne (1736-1850), fabriqués sur le site de Jingdezhen, ont été étudiés selon une approche multi-analytique. L'étude a permis de mettre en évidence une homogénéité de la composition et des conditions de cuissons des pâtes à haute température, traduisant la standardisation du procédé technique. Les glaçures sont également relativement homogènes à l'exception de certaines glaçures plus riches en calcium qui permettaient une cuisson à plus basse température. Les évolutions technologiques les plus importantes concernent le pigment de cobalt employé pour peindre le décor bleu sous glaçure. Les analyses ont permis de confirmer deux origines différentes du minerai : un cobalt riche en fer probablement originaire de Perse, employé sous la dynastie Yuan (1279-1368), et un cobalt local riche en manganèse et nickel utilisé à partir de la dynastie Ming moyenne (1436-1572). On voit également se développer au Ming moyen (1436-1572), un pigment de synthèse, l'aluminate de cobalt (CoAl2O4) probablement formé par la réaction à haute température du minerai de cobalt et d'une argile alumino-siliceuse. Le pigment de cobalt obtenu est ensuite mélangé à des phases riches en calcium entraînant la croissance de cristaux aciculaires d'anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), autour des grains de pigment, durant la cuisson. La présence de nombreux gros grains de pigments riches en cobalt, entourés d'une couche épaisse de cristaux d'anorthite permet l'obtention de la couleur bleue la plus intense. Enfin, l'étude fine de la microstructure a permis d'identifier des microstructures "déviantes" appartenant à des vases qui pourraient être des copies modernes.

Ceramic artifacts have a long history and have been discovered worldwide. Their conservations are rarely impacted by the burial sites. Thus, they are ideal materials for understanding the human history and culture. The main archaeological studies concerning ancient ceramics contains provenance (dating, workshop, trade), raw materials (identification, origin), manufacturing process and utilization (analysis of content residues). For my work, I focused on the investigation of the manufacturing process. The main steps of fabrication process of ancient ceramics is composed ofselection of raw materials, preparation (leaching, purification, body, glaze or slip, pigments), shaping (the plastic paste is shaped to the lathe or using the molds). Then, there are two possibilities: either the vase is fired before the decoration stage, or the decoration is applied to the raw vase. To finish, the whole is fired. My objective is to obtain information on the manufacturing process by analyzing the structure of ancient ceramics, and in particular the structure of decorative layers.The structure of ancient ceramics is complex with heterogeneities at different scales (mm to nm). A decorated ceramic generally is composed of a body and a coating, which including of the decoration. The coating could contain different natures. The thickness can be variable from mm to nm. The decorative layer can be a part of the coating or the whole coating. The decorative layer can be constituent of an amorphous vitrified phase and diverse crystals, such as colorant crystals, feldspar, quartz, etc., of which the size varies from several microns to nanometer. The description of such structure requires the analysis at high resolution (nm) with large representative zone (often, several mm3). It is difficult to realize.In my work, I proposed an alternative approach. The approach is based on three stages. Firstly, the rapid investigations (principally, optical microscopy) at low resolutions are effected to analyze and select the zone requiring analysis at high resolution. Secondly, the selected zone is analyzed at high resolution by appropriate techniques according to the information sought. Thirdly, I try to construct the structure of the object based on the partially data, and therefore deduce the manufacturing process. I will illustrate this approach through three examples. The first one concerns the yellow pigment of the Roman marbled terra sigillata (Chapter III). The second one is about the firing process of Attic potteries (Chapter III). The third one concerns the color variations of blue decoration of Qinghua porcelains (Chapter IV).; Les artefacts en céramique ont une longue histoire et ont été récupérés dans presque toutes les régions du monde. La couche décorative peut être constitutive d'une phase vitrifiée amorphe et divers cristaux, tels que cristaux colorants, feldspath, quartz, etc., dont la taille varie de plusieurs microns à nanomètre. La description de cette structure nécessite l'analyse à haute résolution (nm) avec grande zone représentative (souvent plusieurs mm3). C’est difficile à réaliser.Dans mon travail, j'ai proposé une autre approche. L'approche est basée sur trois étapes. Premièrement, les analyses rapides (principalementmicroscopie optique) à faibles résolutions sont effectuées pour analyser et sélectionner la zone nécessitant une analyse à haute résolution. Ensuite, lazone sélectionnée est analysée à haute résolution par des techniques appropriées en tenant compte des informations recherchées. Troisièmement,on essaie de construire la structure de l'objet sur la base des données partielles, et d’en déduire le processus de fabrication. Je vais illustrer cetteapproche par trois exemples. La première concerne le pigment jaune de la terre sigillée marbrée romaine (chapitre III). Le second concerne le processus de cuisson des poteries attiques (chapitre III). Le troisième concerne les variations de couleur de la décoration bleue des porcelaines Qinghua (chapitre IV).

Mon objectif est d'obtenir des informations sur le procédé de fabrication en analysant la structure des céramiques anciennes, et en particulier, la structure des couches décoratives. La structure des céramiques anciennes est une structure complexe en couches avec des hétérogénéités à différentes échelles (mm à nm). Une céramique décorée est généralement composée d'une pâte et d'un revêtement, y compris de la décoration. Le revêtement peut contenir des natures différentes. L'épaisseur peut être variable de mm à nm. La couche décorative peut être une partie ou du tout la revêtement. La couche décorative peut être constitutive d'une phase vitrifiée amorphe et divers cristaux, tels que cristaux colorants, feldspath, quartz, etc., dont la taille varie de plusieurs microns à nanomètre. La description de cette structure nécessite l'analyse à haute résolution (nm) avec grande zone représentative (souvent plusieurs mm3). C’est difficile à réaliser. Dans mon travail, j'ai proposé une autre approche. L'approche est basée sur trois étapes. Premièrement, les analyses rapides (principalement microscopie optique) à faibles résolutions sont effectuées pour analyser et sélectionner la zone nécessitant une analyse à haute résolution. Ensuite, la zone sélectionnée est analysée à haute résolution par des techniques appropriées en tenant compte des informations recherchées. Troisièmement, on essaie de construire la structure de l'objet sur la base des données partielles, et d’en déduire le processus de fabrication. Je vais illustrer cette approche par trois exemples. La première concerne le pigment jaune de la terre sigillée marbrée romaine (chapitre III). Le second concerne le processus de cuisson des poteries attiques (chapitre III). Le troisième concerne les variations de couleur de la décoration bleue des porcelaines Qinghua (chapitre IV).

It is possible to recover elements need to be replaced before they are permanently lost, with the information contained therein. By comparing laboratory analysis with archival and current literature, it is possible to give a feedback on these ancient materials. We can compare what was done with what was originally planned in the design of the aircraft and complete the known data of these materials with current metallurgical technical analysis. Between 4300 and 3500 BCE, the distribution of bedoulian flint in southern Chassey culture context reached a considerable scale. The flint blocks extracted from lower Cretaceous outcrops in northern Vaucluse was formed in specialized workshops situated near the deposits. It was then exported as unheated blades, but also as heated cores prepared to knap bladelets by pressure on consumer sites. The aim of this study is to understand better the organization of Chassey societies, distribution of networks from upstream to downstream, dealing with the question of enhancement of craft specializations which is one of the most important aspects. The productions are dealt with through networks, which is an original approach, because until now the studies have involved isolated sites or corpus of sites within a region. The study area is large, and therefore we have chosen to focus on the common specialized production, that is to say blades and bladelets of heated and unheated bedoulian flint, but also on other materials (Oligocene flint, Senonian flint, Los Monegros flint) in all sites. The corpus includes sites geographically positioned upstream to downstream of networks and have access to specialized productions: the only producer site which was the subject of a methodical excavation (Saint-Martin, Vaucluse), consumer sites (Les Moulins, Drôme, L’Héritière, Bouches-du-Rhône and Saint-Antoine, Hérault), a hypothetical central redistributor site (Auriac, Aude) and sites on the margins of the extension area of southern Chassey culture (St. Michel-du-Touch and Château-Percin, Haute-Garonne). Firstly, a methodology based on a traceological approach and materials science has enabled us to note that the heat treatment affects the stone fracturing and its path by changing the porosity and decreasing the tenacity. It could be shown, especially by edge acuity and mechanic tests or use of heated and unheated bladelets in a blind test, that the change in the properties of the stone results in an improvement in the sharpness of the blades. The functional analysis was then used to further our understanding of the role of specialized productions in the sous-systèmes techniques, that is to say, to understand how and for what purpose these tools were used. Lastly, the analysis was expanded into more general issues concerning the organization of exchange networks. These ideas are based on the level of integration of sites to different networks and lead to discussions on complementarity and operation of these networks., Entre 4300 et 3500 avant notre ère, la diffusion du silex bédoulien en contexte chasséen a atteint une ampleur considérable. Ce silex, extrait des affleurements crétacés inférieurs du nord du Vaucluse a été mis en forme dans des ateliers spécialisés situés à proximité des gisements. Il a été ensuite exporté sous forme de lames non chauffées, mais aussi de nucléus chauffés préparés pour le débitage de lamelles par pression sur les sites consommateurs. Il s’agit, dans ce travail, de mieux cerner l’organisation des sociétés chasséennes, de l’amont vers l’aval des réseaux de diffusion, en abordant la question du renforcement des spécialisations artisanales qui en est l’un des aspects les plus marquants. Les productions sont abordées par le biais des réseaux, approche originale puisque jusqu’à maintenant les études ont concerné des sites isolés ou des corpus de sites au sein d’un terroir. La zone d’étude est vaste, et par conséquent nous avons fait le choix de nous concentrer sur les productions spécialisées communes à tous les sites, c'est-à-dire les productions lamino-lamellaires en silex bédoulien chauffé et non chauffé, mais aussi sur d’autres matériaux (silex oligocène, silex sénonien, silex de Los Monegros). Le corpus inclut des sites géographiquement positionnés de l’amont vers l’aval des réseaux et ayant accès aux productions spécialisées : le seul site producteur ayant fait l’objet d’une fouille méthodique (Saint-Martin, Vaucluse), des sites consommateurs (Les Moulins, Drôme ; L’Héritière, Bouches-du-Rhône et Saint-Antoine, Hérault), un site hypothétiquement central redistributeur (Auriac, Aude) et des sites aux marges de l’aire d’extension du Chasséen méridional (Saint-Michel-du-Touch et Château Percin, Haute-Garonne). Une méthodologie basée sur une approche tracéologique et un recours aux sciences des matériaux a permis dans un premier temps, de constater que le traitement thermique, par une modification de la porosité, provoque une baisse de la ténacité et a une incidence sur la fracturation et sur son cheminement.Il a pu être démontré que la modification des propriétés de la roche par la chauffe se traduit par une amélioration du pouvoir de coupe des tranchants des lamelles débitées sur silex bédoulien notamment par des mesures d'acuité des tranchants et par des séries de tests mécaniques ou d'utilisation en aveugle de lamelles chauffées ou non chauffées. L’analyse fonctionnelle a permis ensuite d’approfondir nos connaissances sur la place des productions spécialisées dans les sous-systèmes techniques, c'est-à-dire de comprendre comment et pour quelle finalité ces outils ont été utilisés. Enfin, la réflexion a été poussée sur des questions d’ordre plus général concernant l’organisation des réseaux d’échanges. Ces idées sont basées sur l’intégration plus ou moins forte des sites aux différents réseaux et mènent à des discussions concernant la complémentarité et le fonctionnement de ces réseaux.

The terra sigillata ceramic is a decorated vessel with standardized forms characteristic of the Roman period and its manufacture was reserved to few specialized workshops. This pottery is recognizable not only by its decorations but by its colour and its brightness, attained by means of a red vitrified slip. This one was obtained by firing under oxidizing conditions an iron rich clay finely settled. This technique appeared in central Italy during the 1st century B.C. (Arezzo, Pisa) and it was spread across the Roman Empire during the Augustan period. From the beginning of our era, big centres of production of sigillata (La Graufesenque, Montans) were set up in the South of the Gaul, developing their own directory of shapes and decorations. Before it, these south-Gallic centres and other workshops with a localized production (Bram) produced in the South of The Gaul a non vitrified slip ceramic, reproducing the ancient forms of the italic sigillata. The microstructural analysis of the slip of these different productions have been performed in a wide range of scales (by means of complementary characterization techniques) brings us relevant information on the appearance context of the first workshops of south-Gallic sigillata. The main chemical reactions occurring in the formation of the slips have been identified thanks to a study of the behaviour in temperature of a selection of permo-triasiques clays (likely source of slips). From all these data, it is now possible to identify the conditions (nature and composition of the clay, the temperature and the atmosphere of firing) leading to specific types of slip microstructure and also to bring to light the resemblances and the characteristics of different productions. The spatial variation of the report Fe2 + / Fe3 + obtained by means of Fe-K Edge XANES in the K-edge of iron, allowed, example, to precisely identify the variations of atmosphere during the annealing, and to distinguish easily the true sigillata from red imitation of sigillata which always preserves the track of their firing in reducing atmosphere. The study of sigillata slip by spectroscopy Raman highlighted the crystalline defects of the hematite (main pigment) depending on conditions of elaboration (nature of the clay and the temperature of firing) and can be thus used as criterion to distinguish the different productions. These results show that the ceramic with non vitrified slip (sigillata imitation) corresponded well to a end product with a more traditional manufacture and in localized production, maybe aiming to fulfil a need connected to the deficit of vessels which existed during this period. The craftsmen adapted the composition of their slip according to kilns traditionally used (firing in reducing atmosphere) with the aim of obtaining a red slip, but have never tried to modify the mode of firing to make of the truth vitrified slip sigillata. The production of sigillata, fired in oxidizing atmosphere, suddenly appears in the years 20 AD, what suggests the Italian specialists’ intervention mastering perfectly this technique. This transfer came along with a modification of the process of elaboration which confers on slip a better mechanical resistance and also improves their optical properties, but requires a higher temperature and thus adding an additional cost. Nevertheless the study of the resources in clays of the various south-Gallic centres tends to demonstrate that it is not about an adaptation to local clays. It would seem that a difference in the preparation of the slip is responsible for this structural modification. The potters of La Graufesenque and Montans credibly adapted new processes (mode of firing) while preserving certain know-how to make native for the preparation of the clay. This modification thus results from a voluntary choice or in any case from a voluntarily preserved particular process, which leads an evolution of the product. This one becomes more functional at the same time that the aesthetics are preserved, maybe in answer to a more marked need in utilitarian vessels in this period. Even though we cannot really speak about a change of status of the sigillata, it is clear that this evolution follows in a parallel way, the variations of political and economic context (empire/Principate) which surrounds both considered productions (italic and south-Gallic).; La céramique sigillée est une vaisselle de table décorée de formes standardisées caractéristique de la période romaine et dont la fabrication est réservée à quelques ateliers spécialisés. Reconnaissable par ses décors mais surtout par sa couleur rouge, elle se caractérise par un engobe grésé obtenu par vitrification sous atmosphère oxydante d’une préparation argileuse finement décantée et riche en fer. La technique de fabrication apparaît en Italie centrale au cours du premier siècle avant J.C. (Arezzo, Pise) et va ensuite s’étendre, durant la période augustéenne. Dès le début de notre aire, de grands centres de production de sigillées (La Graufesenque, Montans) se mettent en place dans le sud de la Gaule, développant leur propre répertoire de forme et de décoration. Avant cela, ces centres sud-gaulois et d’autres ateliers à diffusion plus régionale (Bram), ont produit dans le sud de La Gaule une céramique à engobe non grésé, reproduisant les formes anciennes des sigillées italiques. L’analyse microstructurale des engobes de ces différentes productions, réalisée à différentes échelles par des techniques de caractérisation complémentaires, apporte des informations pertinentes sur le contexte entourant l’apparition des premiers ateliers de sigillées sud-gaulois. Les principales réactions chimiques intervenant dans la formation des vernis ont pu être identifiées grâce à une étude menée en parallèle sur le comportement en température d'une sélection d'argiles permo-triasiques (source probable des engobes). De l'ensemble de ces données, il est à présent possible de déterminer les conditions (nature et composition de l’argile, température et atmosphère de cuisson) conduisant à tel ou tel type de microstructure mais également de mettre en évidence les similitudes et les caractéristiques propres de chaque atelier. La variation spatiale du rapport Fe2+/Fe3+ obtenu par XANES au seuil K du fer, permet, par exemple, d'identifier en grande partie les variations d'atmosphère au cours de la cuisson, et de distinguer facilement les sigillées des présigillées rouges qui conservent toujours la trace de leur cuisson en atmosphère réductrice. L'étude des vernis des sigillées par spectroscopie Raman montre, quant à elle, que les défauts cristallins de l'hématite (pigment principal) dépendent des conditions d'élaboration (nature de l’argile et température de cuisson) et peuvent donc être utilisés comme critère pour distinguer les différentes productions entre elles. Les principaux résultats montrent que la céramique à vernis non grésés (présigillées) fabriquée quelques dizaines d'années avant la production de vraie sigillée, correspond bien à un produit fini de fabrication plus traditionnelle et à diffusion locale, visant peut-être à combler un besoin lié au déficit en vaisselle de table qui existait à cette époque. Les potiers ont adapté la composition de leur vernis en fonction des fours à flammes directes traditionnellement utilisés (cuisson en atmosphère réductrice) dans le but d’obtenir un engobe rouge, mais n’ont jamais cherché à modifier le mode de cuisson pour fabriquer de la sigillée à engobe grésé. Les productions de sigillées, cuites en atmosphère oxydante se mettent en place brutalement dans les années +20, ce qui suggère l’intervention de spécialistes (italiens) maîtrisant déjà parfaitement la technique. Ce transfert s’est accompagné d’une modification du procédé d'élaboration qui confère aux vernis une meilleure résistance mécanique et améliore également leurs propriétés optiques, mais nécessite cependant une température de cuisson plus importante et donc un coût supplémentaire. Pourtant l'étude des ressources en argiles des différents centres sud-gaulois tend à démontrer qu’il ne s’agit pas d'une adaptation aux argiles locales. Il semblerait qu’une différence dans la préparation du vernis soit responsable de cette modification structurale. Les potiers de La Graufesenque et de Montans ont vraisemblablement adapté de nouveaux procédés (mode de cuisson) tout en conservant un certain savoir faire indigène pour la préparation de l’argile. Cette modification résulte donc d'un choix volontaire ou en tout cas d’un procédé particulier volontairement conservé, qui entraîne une évolution du produit. Celui-ci devient plus fonctionnel mais tout aussi esthétique peut-être en réponse à un besoin en vaisselle utilitaire plus marquée à cette époque. Même si on ne peut pas vraiment parler d’un changement de statut de la sigillée, il est clair que cette évolution suit, de façon parallèle, les variations de contexte politique et économique (empire / Principat) qui entoure les deux productions considérées (italiques et sud-gauloises).
