Specific nano- and micro-scale morphologies of composites can affect the resulting optical and UV reflectivity of the materials. One example is “Vantablack®” made from aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with 99.96% absorption. A similar material with CNTs grown on surface-activated aluminum (CNTs/sa-Al) even yielded 99.995% absorption, one order of magnitude higher than Vantablack®. On the other hand, fresh snow reflects 90% or more of the incident electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 400 and 1,000 nm. The reflectivity of snow originates from multiple scattering in the porous morphology made of snow grains. Taking these complex morphologies as inspiration, CFRP epoxy composites with different types, sizes, shapes, and amount of nanoparticles are prepared and compared regarding their optical and ultraviolet (UV) reflectivity. Increasing the reflectivity in the near and far UV may be beneficial for the durability of the epoxy composites, but selective higher or lower reflectivity in certain wavelength ranges may also yield tailored visual effects. Results from different processing approaches with selected nanoparticles are presented and discussed.

Lifetime of plastic pipes can be estimated by integration of a power law describing the crack kinetics. However, this procedure requires an FEM (finite element method) calculation of the possible crack propagation in the pipe to obtain stress intensity factor dependency on the crack length. It is very important for the simulation to consider every possible load that is acting on the pipe. This contribution deals with FEM modelling of a pipe that is loaded by internal pressure, residual stresses and soil loads. Comparison of the factors and pipe lifetime estimation is carried out.

The principle of silicate layer reinforcement in a polymer matrix is known as the formation of a 3D network of single layers. Nevertheless there is still a lack of knowledge about the physical ageing of nanocomposites respectively the stability of this network over time. As most of the nanocomposite applications have a more or less long-term shelf life respectively storage time, the investigation of the storage-time dependent behavior of the layered 3D structure in a polymer matrix is of major interest. In this study, the rheological (shear and elongational) properties of different polypropylene nanocomposites were measured using a cone-plate rheometer and a Rheotens apparatus. To evaluate the structural stability over time, the samples were measured immediately after processing and after defined periods (18 and 36 months) stored under constant conditions. Furthermore the network structure was determined using XRD and TEM measurements. The results show, that, depending on the clay rate and especially the degree of exfoliation, the rheological properties are changing significantly. Thereby chain-splitting caused by photo-oxidative degradation, leading to a loss in molecular weight, as well as a weakened 3D network by reverse diffusion of the polymer chains out of the clay gallery and/or reagglomeration of the nanoparticles are the two main factors.

Researchers face the trade-off between publishing mobility data along with their papers while protecting the privacy of the individuals. In addition to the anonymization process, other techniques, such as spatial discretization and location concealing or removal, are applied to achieve these dual objectives. The primary research question is whether concealing the observation area is an adequate form of protection or whether human mobility patterns in urban areas are inherently revealing of location. The characteristics of the mobility data, such as the number of activity records in a given spatial unit, can reveal the silhouette of the urban landscape, which can be used to infer the identity of the city in question. The presented locating method was tested on multiple cities using different open datasets and coarser spatial discretization units. While publishing mobility data is essential for research, concealing the observation area is insufficient to prevent the identification of the urban area. Changes in the number of Weyl nodes in Weyl semimetals occur through merging processes, usually involving a pair of oppositely charged nodes. More complicated processes involving multiple Weyl nodes are also possible, but they typically require fine tuning and are thus less stable. In this Letter, we study how symmetries affect the allowed merging processes and their stability, focusing on the combination of a twofold rotation and time-reversal (C_{2}T) symmetry. We find that, counterintuitively, processes involving a merging of three nodes are more generic than processes involving only two nodes. Our Letter suggests that multi-Weyl merging may be observed in a large variety of quantum materials, and we discuss SrSi_{2} and bilayer graphene as potential candidates.

What basically determines how much energy is generated by a photovoltaic (PV) system is the amount of solar irradiation that is absorbed by its PV modules. One of the technical solutions to boost this quantity, and thusly also maximize the return on PV investments, is solar tracking, which makes the following of the sun on its daily and annual journey in the sky possible and also takes changes in cloud conditions into consideration. The solar-tracking solutions that PV systems are most frequently equipped with deploy active sensor technologies, while passive ones are less common in present-day practice. However, even the popular solutions of today have their limitations. Their active sensor-tracking algorithms leave room for improvement for at least three major reasons, as they do not prevent the unnecessary operation of the motors in cloudy weather, they do not make the modules assume an appropriate position after nightfall, and they do not make sure that the structure and the electronics of the PV systems are protected from rain and the strong winds in the event of storms. This paper introduces a new active sensor-tracking algorithm, which has not only been tested but it is also in the process of patenting (patent ID: p2100209). By their contribution, the authors endeavor to propose a solution that can solve all three of the issues mentioned above. The concept is based on two fundamental findings. According to the first one, periodic movement can not only considerably decrease motor movement but also increase system lifetime, while the second one simply suggests that moving the modules into an almost horizontal position facing the equator at low light levels is conducive to the prevention of damages caused by storms and fast reaction to the increase in the amount of light at daybreak. A positive feature of the new system for PV power plant operators is that it performs the tracking of the sun practically without any decrease in power compared to the focal point position, since it works with an average inaccuracy of 1.9°.

In today's photovoltaic (PV) power plants, traditional crystalline PV modules are the prevalent technology, which is highly susceptible to partial shading due to the risk of irreversible damage. Therefore, it is advisable to explore potential construction sites for objects that might cause shading, including high-voltage transmission towers, whose shading effects can be significant due to their height. By means of innovative simulation, using a model, validated with actual data, this study endeavored to deliver novel information related to the problems of shading by high-voltage transmission lines. In the context of Hungary, it examined the risk factors, technical and economic aspects, and possible solutions important for PV projects. It provides new insight, much needed also at the international level, considering the fact that the extent of the shadows cast by conductors on the surface at low Sun elevations is not known at present and neither are the shading characteristics of conductors between two transmission towers, depending on their height, in winter, when the Sun is low. An added practical benefit of the study is that its technical and economic approaches and the software solutions are all based on the practice of PV system design and construction. Related to the investigated issues, this can facilitate the formulation of the technical and economic aspects of suitable PV power plant building strategies in Hungary.

The review describes the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study kinetics of folding, refolding and aggregation of proteins, RNA and DNA. Time-resolved NMR experiments can be conducted in a reversible or an irreversible manner. In particular, irreversible folding experiments pose large requirements for (i) signal-to-noise due to the time limitations and (ii) synchronising of the refolding steps. Thus, this contribution discusses the application of methods for signal-to-noise increases, including dynamic nuclear polarisation, hyperpolarisation and photo-CIDNP for the study of time-resolved NMR studies. The C40A/C82A double mutant of barstar has been shown to undergo cold denaturation above the water freezing point. By rapidly applying radio-frequency power to lossy aqueous samples, refolding of barstar from its cold-denatured state can be followed by real-time NMR spectroscopy. Since temperature-induced unfolding and refolding is reversible for this double mutant, multiple cycling can be utilized to obtain 2D real-time NMR data. Barstar contains two proline residues that adopt a mix of cis and trans conformations in the low-temperature-unfolded state, which can potentially induce multiple folding pathways. The high time resolution real-time 2D-NMR measurements reported here show evidence for multiple folding pathways related to proline isomerization, and stable intermediates are populated. By application of advanced heating cycles and state-correlated spectroscopy, an alternative folding pathway circumventing the rate-limiting cis-trans isomerization could be observed. NMR sensitivity-enhancement methods involving hyperpolarized water could be of importance for solution-state biophysical investigations. Hyperpolarized water (HyperW) can enhance the 1 H NMR signals of exchangeable sites by orders of magnitude over their thermal counterparts, while providing insight into chemical exchange and solvent accessibility at a site-resolved level. As HyperW's enhancements are achieved by exploiting fast solvent exchanges associated with minimal interscan delays, possibilities for the rapid monitoring of chemical reactions and biomolecular (re)folding are opened. HyperW NMR can also accommodate heteronuclear transfers, facilitating the rapid acquisition of 2-dimensional (2D) 15 N- 1 H NMR correlations, and thereby combining an enhanced spectral resolution with speed and sensitivity. This work demonstrates how these qualities can come together for the study of nucleic acids. HyperW injections were used to target the guanine-sensing riboswitch aptamer domain (GSR apt ) of the xpt-pbuX operon in Bacillus subtilis Unlike what had been observed in proteins, where residues benefited of HyperW NMR only if/when sufficiently exposed to water, these enhancements applied to every imino resonance throughout the RNA. The >300-fold enhancements observed in the resulting 1 H NMR spectra allowed us to monitor in real time the changes that GSR apt undergoes upon binding hypoxanthine, a high-affinity interaction leading to conformational refolding on a ∼1-s timescale at 36 °C. Structural responses could be identified for several nucleotides by 1-dimensional (1D) imino 1 H NMR as well as by 2D HyperW NMR spectra acquired upon simultaneous injection of hyperpolarized water and hypoxanthine. Photolabile protecting groups are widely used to trigger oligonucleotide activity. The ON/OFF-amplitude is a critical parameter. An experimental setup has been developed to identify protecting group derivatives with superior caging properties. Bulky rests are attached to the cage moiety via Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition post-synthetically on DNA. Interestingly, the decrease in melting temperature upon introducing o-nitrobenzyl-caged (NPBY-) and diethylaminocoumarin-cages (DEACM-) in DNA duplexes reaches a limiting value. NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize individual base-pair stabilities and determine experimental structures of a selected number of photocaged DNA molecules. The experimental structures agree well with structures predicted by MD simulations. Combined, the structural data indicate that once a sterically demanding group is added to generate a tri-substituted carbon, the sterically less demanding cage moiety points towards the neighboring nucleoside and the bulkier substituents remain in the major groove., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A novel series of tetraethylene glycol (TEG) triazolyl and squaramide containing oxazolidinones were synthesized and tested for their antibacterial activity against a selected panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The 4-TEG-triazolyl derivatives were prepared by 'click reaction'. The introduction of the TEG and squaramide groups did not favor antibacterial activity. The three nucleoside-containing oxazolidinones were also prepared by 'click' methodology resulted in weak antibacterial activity.

New sugar derivatives of ristocetin were prepared by copper-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction using azido-ristocetin aglycon and various propargyl glycosides. Some of them were found to be active against gram-positive bacteria and showed favorable antiviral activity against the H1N1 subtype of influenza A virus., (2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Semisynthetic, lipophilic ristocetin and teicoplanin derivatives were prepared starting from ristocetin aglycon and teicoplanin psi-aglycon (N-acetyl-D-glucosaminyl aglycoteicoplanin). The terminal amino functions of the aglycons were converted into azido form by triflic azide. Copper catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction with lipophilic alkynes resulted in the title compounds. Two of the teicoplanin derivatives showed very good MIC and MBC values against various Gram-positive bacteria, including vanA enterococci. The aggregation and interaction of a n-decyl derivative with bacterial cell wall components was studied. One of the lipophilic ristocetin derivatives displayed favorable anti-influenza virus activity.
