While the role of Greeks in the development of early western medicine is well-known and appreciated, the contributions of modern Greek medical practitioners are less known and often overlooked. On the occasion of the 200-year anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, this review article sheds light onto the achievements of modern scientists of Greek descent in the development of cardiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiovascular research, through a short history of the development of these fields and of the related institutions in Greece. In the last decades, the Greek cardiology and Cardiac Surgery communities have been active inside and outside Greece and have a remarkable presence internationally, particularly in the United States. This article highlights the ways in which Greek cardiology and cardiovascular research has been enriched by absorbing knowledge produced in international medical centers, academic institutes and pharmaceutical industries in which generations of Greek doctors and researchers trained prior to their return to the homeland; it also highlights the achievements of medical practitioners and researchers of Greek descent who excelled abroad, producing ground-breaking work that has left a permanent imprint on global medicine.

Ayşe Şadiye Güvendiren and Hatice Azra Demirelli were the first Turkish female dentists. In a country that came out of the First World War and fought for her independence, they laid the foundations of women's presence in the Turkish dental community and took their honorable place in history with their courage, devotion, and determination. Introduction: on a formal trip to Scotland at the end of 2018 at the traditional and renowned University of Glasgow and your very famous School of Medicine, before the covid-19 pandemic, I was able to spend a day on an official visit to the Glasgow College and Museum of Surgeons, "Lister's House" and many illustrious others, where I was able to study, feel and observe the magnitude of the greatness of the men who preceded with glory, merits, pioneering spirit and a lot of hard work the great discussions for the time and relevant discoveries that would lead to incalculable advances for the development of health science and clinical medicine today, the world is also made up of microbes, every advance in current science depends on the history of our ancestors. Currently we can say that our autoimmune defense system is an appropriate recognition system, more than just a defense system of the body, given the large increase in automine diseases and viral infections with the appearance of the covid-2019 pandemic and its termination. Energy communities are a promising strategy for a global energy transition. European Union (EU) regulatory frameworks are already established and clearly explained, aiming to develop as many projects as possible in the different European countries. Accordingly, it is necessary to present two different types of countries: the laggards and the pioneers, two categories that highlight the discrepancies in policy, bureaucracy, culture, and usage of alternative sources and technologies, such as renewable energy, towards the implementation of energy communities. This work compares two representative case studies to qualitatively understand the differences between laggard and pioneer countries: Italy and the Netherlands, respectively. The regulatory framework and the solid points/shortcomings of each country are explained first. Thereafter, an accurate description of the two selected case study communities and their different peculiarities is provided. Finally, the main similarities and differences are stressed to discuss the lessons to be learned in laggard and pioneer countries. Five pillars for the development and uptake of energy communities are identified related to regulations, economic benefits, technical limitations, sustainability, and social awareness. These outcomes suggest the importance of policy management, and stress the limitations of governance in helping policymakers and experts to support the energy transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyanobacteria are considered to be among the first microorganisms to settle in hot springs where they form a favourable environment for further biological establishment. Nevertheless, the exact pioneer species and how early they start participating in the biomineralisation processes remain unknown. The aim of the present study was twofold, that is, to identify the pioneer Cyanobacteria in hot springs (i.e. Aedipsos area, Greece) and to record their early biomineralisation processes. The in situ experimental approach included the setup of sterile glass and/or plexiglass slides in several locations to facilitate colonisation by Cyanobacteria, and removal of slides for study after 48–202 h. Synechococcales (37%) and Oscillatoriales (33%) were the dominant orders, followed by Chroococcales (15%) and Spirulinales (11%); whereas Chroococcidiopsidales (4%) was found only in a few sites. The order Nostocales was not observed at the early stages of colonisation although it was present in mature stages. Forty‐three species of Cyanobacteria were identified as pioneer microorganisms, with Spirulina subtilissima being the most frequently found. The most common pioneers were multicellular filamentous Cyanobacteria, that is, organisms with a large surface area able to form significant amounts of extracellular polymeric substances. Among the pioneers, thermophilic species of Cyanobacteria were typical such as Chroococcidiopsis thermalis, Chroococcus thermalis, Leptolyngbya thermalis, S. subtilissima and Symploca thermalis, as well as typical limestone substrate species such as Chroococcus lithophilus and Leptolyngbya laminosa. Temperature seems to affect biodiversity. Also, pioneers were found to contribute to the biomineralisation processes from their first appearance. In the studied samples, three biomineralisation processes were identified, that is, (i) calcification of cyanobacterial sheaths, (ii) trapping of carbonate crystals on a crystal retention lattice formed by extracellular polymeric substances and filaments and (iii) trapping and confinement of carbonate crystals around filamentous Cyanobacteria. Echocardiography is less than 70 years old, and many major advances have occurred within living memory, but already some pioneering contributions may be overlooked. In order to consider what circumstances have been common to the most successful innovations, we have studied and here provide a timeline and summary of the most important developments in transthoracic and transoesophageal ultrasound imaging and Doppler techniques, as well as in intravascular ultrasound and imaging in paediatric cardiology. The entries are linked to a comprehensive list of first publications and to a collection of first-hand historical accounts published by early investigators. Review of the original manuscripts highlights that it is difficult to establish unequivocal precedence for many new imaging methods, since engineers were often working independently but simultaneously on similar problems. Many individuals who are prominently linked with particular developments were not the first in their field. Developments in echocardiography have been highly dependent on technological advances, and most likely to be successful when engineers and clinicians were able to collaborate with open exchange between centres and disciplines. As with many other new medical technologies, initial responses were sceptical and introduction into clinical practice required persistence and substantial energy from the first adopters. Current developments involve advances in software as much as in equipment, and progress will depend on continuing collaborations between engineers and clinical scientists, for example to identify unmet needs and to investigate the clinical impact of particular imaging approaches. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are an extrapolation from the field of microtechnology to the atomic level. The development is based on the 60-year-old message of R. Feynman, ‘There's plenty of room at the bottom’. His vision has fertilised at the turn of the millennium with the announcement of generously funded nanotechnology initiatives. The journey was paved by seven Nobel Prizes (1986–2016) for new microscopes, low-dimensional materials (fullerenes, graphene), theories and computer methods up to the building of molecular engines. However, the enthusiasm for this technically and IT-oriented ‘business as usual’ partly dissolves in the problems of a planet burdened by climate change, depletion of raw materials, new diseases and pandemics. It is a challenge for nanoscience to adapt to these goals. Therefore, after a brief recapitulation of the history and achievements of nanotechnology, the paper will focus on its new directions. Among them, nanomedicine and pharmacy are of the topmost interest. Moreover, in the interaction of the nanoworld with humans, cross-sectional topics such as nanoethics and nanotoxicology (hampered by commercial interests) must be placed at a higher level at the same time as addressing specific applications. The world counts on nanomedicine at first in areas where overcoming of physiological barriers is not so difficult. These are dentistry and dermatology. In pharmacy, promising is the administration of drugs by methods of a ‘Trojan horse’ – their introduction directly to a therapeutic target. We also provide examples of gas nanosensors for diagnostics. These topics will be processed in such a way as to highlight the importance of nanoscience for human health.

Up until now, the neolithisation of Western Europe during the sixth millennium BCE has mainly been approached through the characterisation of its diffusion vectors (cultural vs demic diffusion) and the emergence of technoeconomic innovations (rhythms, scenarios, and transmission). Traditionally, two primary routes of agricultural diffusion are distinguished: one extending along the Danube river corridor to the Atlantic coast (Linearbandkeramik) and the other along the Mediterranean coastal zone (Impressed Ware). To move beyond this dichotomy, this article proposes a first attempt at an integrated approach to the mechanisms of neolithisation in Western Europe, one of the few territories where it is possible, and therefore necessary, to investigate the processes that are common to both of these principal neolithisation complexes. The most widely held vision, inherited from the 1980s, of a European Neolithic that developed from east to west following a regular rhythm has progressively been replaced by a more complex model of diffusion characterised by arrhythmia and cultural reconfigurations. Despite having different origins and trajectories, the expansion of the first farmers was made possible by a number of common mechanisms. Impresso-Cardial and Linearbandkeramik societies faced similar constraints, especially with regard to ensuring the stability of their social and economic models, while minimising the risks inherent to the colonisation of new territories. Three main mechanisms would have structured the first neolithisation phases of both spheres: a strong mobility of populations regulated to varying degrees by social rules, a strong solidarity expressed at multiple levels of interactions within each sphere, and, finally, the existence of syncretism and cultural recompositions including close and long-distance relations.

Within Linearbandkeramik (LBK) studies, several models of social structure and organisation have been debated since the 1960s, influenced by several major anthropological theories that even today guide the debates. We discuss here the notion of social interactions in LBK contexts by focusing on the primary form of LBK social unit: the household. Assuming that the solutions found by the LBK communities to navigate their ambivalent position regarding sedentism and mobility probably formed the basis of their social organisation, social networks would have played a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and spread of the LBK culture. The village pioneer stage crystallises several core mechanisms of LBK society and is particularly relevant for assessing the dynamic processes involved in the fundamental social interactions that structure LBK societies. Invoking rather the “hofplatz” or the “ward” models, the coexistence of different groups attached to specific expressions of identity within the same settlements was highlighted and led to several hypotheses of social organisation putting clan or lineage structures at the foreground. Differentiation or inequalities between individuals and groups were also debated, even recently based on new technological and bioarchaeological data. In the frame of the current ANR Homes project, our goal is to test the reliability of these models based on an evidence-based approach and deepen the economical model we recently proposed.

The article examines settler colonialism in the U.S. with regard to the myths related to pioneers in Confederate monuments from 1890 to 2017. Topics include the importance of the frontier to American history, the displacement and decimation of Native Americans by Anglo-Americans, how the monuments celebrate the racial dominance of whites, and the metaphoric elimination of the Native in Mississippi.

Abstract Background Policy-makers expect that integration of health and social care will improve user and carer experience and reduce avoidable hospital use. [We] evaluate the impact on emergency hospital admissions of two large nationally-initiated service integration programmes in England: the Pioneer (November 2013 to March 2018) and Vanguard (January 2015 to March 2018) programmes. The latter had far greater financial and expert support from central agencies. Methods Of the 206 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in England, 51(25%) were involved in the Pioneer programme only, 22(11%) were involved in the Vanguard programme only and 13(6%) were involved in both programmes. We used quasi-experimental methods to compare monthly counts of emergency admissions between four groups of CCGs, before and after the introduction of the two programmes. Results CCGs involved in the programmes had higher monthly hospital emergency admission rates than non-participants prior to their introduction [7.9 (95% CI:7.8–8.1) versus 7.5 (CI: 7.4–7.6) per 1000 population]. From 2013 to 2018, there was a 12% (95% CI:9.5–13.6%) increase in emergency admissions in CCGs not involved in either programme while emergency admissions in CCGs in the Pioneer and Vanguard programmes increased by 6.4% (95% CI: 3.8–9.0%) and 8.8% (95% CI:4.5–13.1%), respectively. CCGs involved in both initiatives experienced a smaller increase of 3.5% (95% CI:-0.3–7.2%). The slowdown largely occurred in the final year of both programmes. Conclusions Health and social care integration programmes can mitigate but not prevent rises in emergency admissions over the longer-term. Greater financial and expert support from national agencies and involvement in multiple integration initiatives can have cumulative effects.

Willa Cather’s novel My Ántonia (1918) gives a profound insight into the life stories of the newcomers, people of different origin who came to America, their new patria, in search of brighter future and better prospects. For many of them the vast and “merciless” Nebraskan prairie would become their new home. Therefore, the grass of the plain, the demanding farm life and the barren land, the language as well as the class and nationality barriers, the “pioneers” who succeeded to hold out due to their heroic perseverance and self-reliance, vivid memories of their far-away, mostly European, homeland, present some of the major issues Cather masterfully discusses in the aforementioned novel. The aim of this paper is to highlight the “Vergilian sentiment” of nostalgia and melancholy with a special emphasis on the protagonists, primarily the main heroine, a strongwill woman “pioneer” who endures the hardship of life from her childhood and who, despite all the challenges and obstacles on her path, proudly proves to be “a rich well of life”. Missiology has always been inspired by soteriology, that is, Christian views of salvation. However, little is known about the actual soteriological beliefs of missionary practitioners. This article is an explorative qualitative study of soteriological beliefs among Dutch Protestant ministers who work in pioneer settings (N=20) and established churches (N=40). Our research shows that, contrary to what might be expected, these two groups (termed 'pioneers' and 'pastors') are very much alike with regard to their soteriological beliefs. The majority are convinced of the uniqueness of Jesus, and the connection of salvation with God and/or Jesus – even if this salvation is often expressed in immanent terms. Only two differences have been found between pastors and pioneers. Pioneers experience more challenges in communicating the uniqueness of Christianity and they are more likely to have traditional views of 'eternal lostness'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Universities years are a peak time when students learn to behave as responsible adults and preparing themselves as professionals and rarely have issues with their institutions. The purpose of the study was to explore the various problems and difficulties of B.Ed (1.5 years) program students of Institute of Education and Research, University of the Punjab, Lahore. The study was designed to identify the problems faced by B.Ed students during their 1.5 year degree. Other objectives of the study were to compare the difference of pioneers and junior students' problems and to determine the problems faced by the students on the basis of their graduation degree background (Art/Science) during 1.5 year stay at IER. The research was carried out in positivistic paradigm and descriptive in nature. By using the quantitative research design, survey was conducted. Every student of B.Ed 1.5 year degree program of IER, University of the Punjab, Lahore, were the population of the study. The study sample was comprised of 183 students which was chosen using a census sampling method. By using self-developed questionnaire, researcher found that the majority of B.Ed students' faced academic workload, time management and teachers' punctuality difficulties during their stay at IER. The results of analysis were overall mean, M of 183 B.Ed students' who faced problems during their stay at IER was 67.032 and the SD 10.719. Further it was also found that pioneers' students faced more problems (M = 70.186, SD = 11.16) as compared to junior students (M = 65.532, SD = 2.73). Results shown that Science students have faced almost equal problems (M = 67.159, SD = 9.53) as compared to Arts students (M = 66.915, SD = 11.76). The conclusions have been drawn that no significant difference observed with respect to graduation degree/faculties (Science/Arts) of B.Ed students' but noteworthy variation in facing problems by pioneers and juniors session during their 1.5 years stay at Institute of Education and Research. It is recommended to identify causes of the problems in depth faced by higher education students during their stay at the institute. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
