Two nonnative Caribbean frogs, the Puerto Rican coqui and the Cuban greenhouse frog, recently invaded Hawaii. Because of its louder breeding call, management efforts have focused on the coqui, while little has been done to address the more cryptic greenhouse frog, even though it may be as widespread and have similar ecological impacts. The goal of this research was to determine the distribution and detection probability of both species on the island of Hawaii. We conducted a breeding call presence/absence survey at 446 sites every 2 km along major road networks. We re-surveyed 125 sites twice to determine detection and occupancy probabilities. Greenhouse frog detection probabilities (0.24, 0.29, 0.48, for each of the three visits, respectively) were lower than coqui detection probabilities (0.58, 0.73, 0.50, respectively) and increased with visits while those of the coqui did not. Greenhouse frog detection probabilities were lower in the presence of coquis for the first two surveys (0.12, 0.14) than in sites with greenhouse frogs alone (0.41), while greenhouse frogs had no effect on the detection of coquis. Site occupancy estimates for the greenhouse and coqui frog were 0.35 and 0.31, respectively, suggesting the species are similarly widespread. Results suggest multiple visits to sites are required to detect the greenhouse frog. Furthermore, results suggest that accounting for detectability is essential when determining the extent of invasion of cryptic species.

Journeys. We all make them. Often they take us to exotic places. Sometimes they take us even further. They might take us through time. Or they might take us into a new way of life. There are times too, when we go all over the world and back again only to find that home is, after all, where it’s all happening. \ud This book contains stories about many different types of journey. We hope you will enjoy travelling into it and finding a world that suits you.

Drowning -- Prevention ,Toddlers -- Accidents ,Health - Abstract
The drowning of toddlers in swimming pools is a major public health concern in Australia, and prevention efforts need to be scientifically evaluated to determine what can reduce the risk of drownings. Fencing regulations (including self-closing gates), teaching swimming skills to children under age four, use of pool alarms, covers and parental supervision are all options to be considered. Drownings in bathtubs and natural waterways must also be addressed, but better data are needed concerning the effectiveness of various prevention measures before any specific course of action can be recommended.

BOTRYOSPHAERIACEAE , *SPECIES , *PATHOGENIC microorganisms , *RIBOSOMAL DNA - Abstract
Background and Aims: Botryosphaeriaceae species are recognised as important pathogens of grapevines both in Australia and overseas. The identity, prevalence and distribution of Botryosphaeriaceae species in vineyards throughout the major winegrowing regions of New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA) was determined to provide a foundation for improved disease prevention and management. Methods and Results: Field surveys from 91 vineyards across NSW and SA resulted in the collection of 2239 diseased wood samples and subsequent isolation of 1258 Botryosphaeriaceae isolates. Morphological identification along with phylogenetic analysis of ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and partial sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (EF1-α) showed that eight Botryosphaeriaceae species from four phylogenetic lineages occur on grapevines in eastern Australia, including Diplodia seriata, Diplodia mutila, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Neofusicoccum parvum, Neofusicoccum australe, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Dothiorella viticola and Dothiorella iberica. Conclusions: The prevalence of individual species varied according to geography and climate. Species of Diplodia and Dothiorella, characterised by thick-walled, pigmented conidia were the most prevalent and were distributed widely throughout both NSW and SA. Species with hyaline conidia, such as Neofusicoccum and Fusicoccum, were isolated less frequently and displayed more limited geographic ranges, whilst only a single isolate of Lasiodiplodia was recovered, this being from the northern most region of NSW. Significance of the Study: The identification of eight taxa within the Botryosphaeriaceae, and their distributions throughout south-eastern Australia was established and discussed in context with climate, reported optimum growth temperatures, and more recent taxonomic and nomenclatural revisions. We established a sound base for control strategies based on the prevailing species in Australian viticultural regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEARING aids ,HYDROGELS ,EAR canal ,METHYL methacrylate ,POLYETHYLENE glycol - Abstract
The problem of acoustic feedback in hearing aids could be solved potentially by applying a compliant hydrogel to the outer surface that would conform to the ear canal and block feedback. With this objective, several formulations of hydrogels were developed and their swelling and mechanical properties investigated. Hydrogel formulations were polymerized from hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP), with various photo-initiators, crosslinkers, and swelling agents. The hydrogel that swelled most rapidly and yet remained undissolved in water had a monomer composition of 40 mol% HEMA, 60 mol% NVP, with 1 wt% polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker, and 0.5 wt% 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenyl-acetophenone as the photo-initiator. The tensile modulus, strength, hardness, and durability of the dry hydrogels were not a strong function of composition. In the swollen state, the mechanical properties were much reduced. The potential use of these materials on hearing aids has been discussed in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Injury control is one of the four priorities of the current National Health Strategy. Injury control targets are an integral part of this strategy and these require the measurement of the incidence of selected injuries. The strategy encourages local community based injury prevention programs. These programs need local data describing the determinants and distribution of injury in the particular community. Emergency department injury surveillance data is one source for this data. However manual data collection has been difficult to implement in Australian hospitals. This study reports an evaluation of the first electronic injury surveillance system integrated into an emergency department patient management system in Australia. This system was well accepted by emergency department staff and achieved good criteria validity in the range 88% to 100% on the injury data items. Emergency department nurses described the departmental requirement to collect injury data as being acceptable. Most nurses rated the injury coding system as satisfactory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GALLIUM ,FURNACES - Abstract
Currently the separation of gallium from weapons plutonium is achieved using complex aqueous processing involving solvent extraction and ion exchange; this process generates large quantities of wastewater containing radioactive materials. At Los Alamos National Laboratory, researchers have been developing a simpler alternative process referred to as the thermally induced gallium removal (TIGR) process; vaporized gallium suboxide is swept away by passing hydrogen/argon over gallium trioxide/plutonium oxide heated at 1100 °C or higher. During the TIGR process some of the gallium suboxide prematurely decomposes to gallium metal and gallium trioxide, which deposit on furnace and vent surfaces. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. BCUT [
B urden,C AS, andU niversity ofT exas] descriptors, defined as eigenvalues of modified connectivity matrices, have traditionally been applied to drug design tasks such as defining receptor relevant subspaces to assist in compound selections. In this paper we present studies of consensus neural networks trained on BCUTs to discriminate compounds with poor aqueous solubility from those with reasonable solubility. This level was set at 0.1 mg/mL on advice from drug formulation and drug discovery scientists. By applying strict criteria to the insolubility predictions, approximately 95% of compounds are classified correctly. For compounds whose predictions have a lower level of confidence, further parameters are examined in order to flag those considered to possess unsuitable biopharmaceutical and physicochemical properties. This approach is not designed to be applied in isolation but is intended to be used as a filter in the selection of screening candidates, compound purchases, and the application of synthetic priorities to combinatorial libraries.- Published

- Abstract
Ultrasound was employed to increase the growth rate of bacterial cells attached to surfaces. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli cells adhered to and grew on a polyethylene surface in the presence of ultrasound. It was found that low-frequency ultrasound (70 kHz) of low acoustic intensity (<2 W/cm2) increased the growth rate of the cells compared to growth without ultrasound. However, at high intensity levels, cells were partially removed from the surface. Ultrasound also enhanced planktonic growth of S. epidermidis and other planktonic bacteria. It is hypothesized that ultrasound increases the rate of transport of oxygen and nutrients to the cells and increases the rate of transport of waste products away from the cells, thus enhancing their growth.

- Abstract
A series of neural networks has been trained, using consensus methods, to recognize compounds that act at biological targets belonging to specific gene families. The MDDR database was used to provide compounds targeted against gene families and sets of randomly selected molecules. BCUT parameters were employed as input descriptors that encode structural properties and information relevant to ligand−receptor interactions. In each case, the networks identified over 80% of the compounds targeting a gene family. The technique was applied to purchasing compounds from external suppliers, and results from screening against one gene family demonstrated impressive abilities to predict the activity of the majority of known hit compounds.
