Search

Nematic elastomers and glasses are solids that display spontaneous distortion under external stimuli. Recent advances in the synthesis of sheets with controlled heterogeneities have enabled their actuation into non-trivial shapes with unprecedented energy density. Thus, these have emerged as powerful candidates for soft actuators. To further this potential, we introduce the key metric constraint which governs shape changing actuation in these sheets. We then highlight the richness of shapes amenable to this constraint through two broad classes of examples which we term nonisometric origami and lifted surfaces. Finally, we comment on the derivation of the metric constraint, which arises from energy minimization in the interplay of stretching, bending and heterogeneity in these sheets.

We have obtained a deep 8-field XMM-Newton mosaic of M33 covering the galaxy out to the D$_{25}$ isophote and beyond to a limiting 0.2--4.5 keV unabsorbed flux of 5$\times$10$^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (L${>}$4$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the distance of M33). These data allow complete coverage of the galaxy with high sensitivity to soft sources such as diffuse hot gas and supernova remnants. Here we describe the methods we used to identify and characterize 1296 point sources in the 8 fields. We compare our resulting source catalog to the literature, note variable sources, construct hardness ratios, classify soft sources, analyze the source density profile, and measure the X-ray luminosity function. As a result of the large effective area of XMM-Newton below 1 keV, the survey contains many new soft X-ray sources. The radial source density profile and X-ray luminosity function for the sources suggests that only $\sim$15% of the 391 bright sources with L${>}$3.6$\times$10$^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ are likely to be associated with M33, and more than a third of these are known supernova remnants. The log(N)--log(S) distribution, when corrected for background contamination, is a relatively flat power-law with a differential index of 1.5, which suggests many of the other M33 sources may be high-mass X-ray binaries. We derive the effective energy density of thin membranes of liquid crystal elastomers as the Gamma-limit of a widely used bulk model. These membranes can display fine-scale features both due to wrinkling that one expects in thin elastic membranes and due to oscillations in the nematic director that one expects in liquid crystal elastomers. We provide an explicit characterization of the effective energy density of membranes and the effective state of stress as a function of the planar deformation gradient. We also provide a characterization of the fine-scale features. We show the existence of four regimes: one where wrinkling and microstructure reduces the effective membrane energy and stress to zero, a second where wrinkling leads to uniaxial tension, a third where nematic oscillations lead to equi-biaxial tension and a fourth with no fine scale features and biaxial tension. Importantly, we find a region where one has shear strain but no shear stress and all the fine-scale features are in-plane with no wrinkling.

As part of a spectroscopic survey of supernova remnant candidates in M83 using the Gemini-South telescope and GMOS, we have discovered one object whose spectrum shows very broad lines at H$\alpha$, [O~I] 6300,6363, and [O~III] 4959,5007, similar to those from other objects classified as `late time supernovae.' Although six historical supernovae have been observed in M83 since 1923, none were seen at the location of this object. Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 images show a nearly unresolved emission source, while Chandra and ATCA data reveal a bright X-ray source and nonthermal radio source at the position. Objects in other galaxies showing similar spectra are only decades post-supernova, which raises the possibility that the supernova that created this object occurred during the last century but was missed. Using photometry of nearby stars from the HST data, we suggest the precursor was at least 17 $\rm M_{sun}$, and the presence of broad H$\alpha$ in the spectrum makes a type II supernova likely. The supernova must predate the 1983 VLA radio detection of the object. We suggest examination of archival images of M83 to search for evidence of the supernova event that gave rise to this object, and thus provide a precise age., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for ApJ

The transient ULX in M83 that went into outburst in or shortly before 2010 is still active. Our new XMM-Newton spectra show that it has a curved spectrum typical of the upper end of the high/soft state or slim-disk state. It appears to be spanning the gap between Galactic stellar-mass black holes and the ultraluminous state, at X-ray luminosities $\approx (1$-$3) \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (a factor of two lower than in the 2010-2011 Chandra observations). From its broadened disk-like spectral shape at that luminosity, and from the fitted inner-disk radius and temperature, we argue that the accreting object is an ordinary stellar-mass black hole with $M \sim$$10$-$20 M_{\odot}$. We suggest that in the 2010-2011 Chandra observations, the source was seen at a higher accretion rate, resulting in a power-law-dominated spectrum with a soft excess at large radii., Comment: 11 pages, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

As the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory enters its fifteenth year of operation on orbit, it continues to perform well and produce spectacular scientific results. The response of ACIS has evolved over the lifetime of the observatory due to radiation damage, molecular contamination and aging of the spacecraft in general. Here we present highlights from the instrument team's monitoring program and our expectations for the future of ACIS. The ACIS calibration source produces multiple line energies and fully illuminates the entire focal plane which has greatly facilitated the measurement of charge transfer inefficiency and absorption from contamination. While the radioactive decay of the source has decreased its utility, it continues to provide valuable data on the health of the instrument. Performance changes on ACIS continue to be manageable, and do not indicate any limitations on ACIS lifetime., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Proc. We have obtained a series of deep X-ray images of the nearby galaxy M83 using Chandra, with a total exposure of 729 ks. Combining the new data with earlier archival observations totaling 61 ks, we find 378 point sources within the D25 contour of the galaxy. We find 80 more sources, mostly background AGN, outside of the D25 contour. Of the X-ray sources, 47 have been detected in a new radio survey of M83 obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Of the X-ray sources, at least 87 seem likely to be supernova remnants (SNRs), based on a combination of their properties in X-rays and at other wavelengths. We attempt to classify the point source population of M83 through a combination of spectral and temporal analysis. As part of this effort, we carry out an initial spectral analysis of the 29 brightest X-ray sources. The soft X-ray sources in the disk, many of which are SNRs, are associated with the spiral arms, while the harder X-ray sources, mostly X-ray binaries (XRBs), do not appear to be. After eliminating AGN, foreground stars and identified SNRs from the sample, we construct the cumulative luminosity function (CLF) of XRBs brighter than 8 10$^{35}$ ergs/s. Despite M83's relatively high star formation rate, the CLF indicates that most of the XRBs in the disk are low mass XRBs., Comment: 115 pages, 7 tables, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

MSH 15-56 (G326.3-1.8) is a composite supernova remnant (SNR) that consists of an SNR shell and a displaced pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the radio. We present XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observations of the remnant that reveal a compact source at the tip of the radio PWN and complex structures that provide evidence for mixing of the supernova (SN) ejecta with PWN material following a reverse shock interaction. The X-ray spectra are well fitted by a non-thermal power-law model whose photon index steepens with distance from the presumed pulsar, and a thermal component with an average temperature of 0.55 keV. The enhanced abundances of silicon and sulfur in some regions, and the similar temperature and ionization timescale, suggest that much of the X-ray emission can be attributed to SN ejecta that have either been heated by the reverse shock or swept up by the PWN. We find one region with a lower temperature of 0.3 keV that appears to be in ionization equilibrium. Assuming the Sedov model, we derive a number of SNR properties, including an age of 16,500 yr. Context: We study the X-ray emission of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 (G109.1-1.0), which is well-known for its enigmatic half-shell morphology both in radio and in X-rays and is associated with the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E2259+586. Aims: We want to understand the origin of the X-ray bright feature inside the SNR called the Lobe and the details of the interaction of the SNR shock wave with the ambient interstellar medium (ISM). Methods: The Lobe and the northeastern part of the SNR were observed with Chandra ACIS-I. We analysed the spectrum of the X-ray emission by dividing the entire observed emission into small regions. The X-ray emission is best reproduced with one-component or two-component non-equilibrium ionisation models depending on the position. In the two-component model one emission component represents the shocked ISM and the other the shocked ejecta. Results: We detect enhanced element abundances, in particular for Si and Fe, in and around the Lobe. There is one particular region next to the Lobe with a high Si abundance of 3.3 (2.6 - 4.0) times the solar value. This is the first, unequivocal detection of ejecta in CTB 109. Conclusions: The new Chandra data confirm that the Lobe was created by the interaction of the SNR shock and the supernova ejecta with dense and inhomogeneous medium in the environment of SNR CTB 109. We present the source catalog of a new Chandra ACIS-I observation of NGC 300 obtained as part of the Chandra Local Volume Survey. Our 63 ks exposure covers ~88% of the D25 isophote (R~6.3 kpc) and yields a catalog of 95 X-ray point sources detected at high significance to a limiting unabsorbed 0.35-8 keV luminosity of ~10^36 erg s^-1. Sources were cross-correlated with a previous XMM-Newton catalog, and we find 75 "X-ray transient candidate" sources that were detected by one observatory, but not the other. We derive an X-ray scale length of 1.7+/-0.2 kpc and a recent star formation rate of 0.12 Msun yr^-1, in excellent agreement with optical observations. Deep, multi-color imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, covering ~32% of our Chandra field, was used to search for optical counterparts to the X-ray sources, and we have developed a new source classification scheme to determine which sources are likely X-ray binaries, supernova remnants, and background AGN candidates. Finally, we present the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) at different X-ray energies, and we find the total NGC 300 X-ray point source population to be consistent with other late-type galaxies hosting young stellar populations (<50 Myr). We find XLF of sources associated with older stellar populations has a steeper slope than the XLF of X-ray sources coinciding with young stellar populations, consistent with theoretical predictions., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures. SN1957D, located in one of the spiral arms of M83, is one of the small number of extragalactic supernovae that has remained detectable at radio and optical wavelengths during the decades after its explosion. Here we report the first detection of SN1957D in X-rays, as part of a 729 ks observation of M83 with \chandra. The X-ray luminosity (0.3 - 8 keV) is 1.7 (+2.4,-0.3) 10**37 ergs/s. The spectrum is hard and highly self-absorbed compared to most sources in M83 and to other young supernova remnants, suggesting that the system is dominated at X-ray wavelengths by an energetic pulsar and its pulsar wind nebula. The high column density may be due to absorption within the SN ejecta. HST WFC3 images resolve the supernova remnant from the surrounding emission and the local star field. Photometry of stars around SN1957D, using WFC3 images, indicates an age of less than 10**7 years and a main sequence turnoff mass more than 17 solar masses. New spectra obtained with Gemini-South show that the optical spectrum continues to be dominated by broad [O III] emission lines, the signature of fast-moving SN ejecta. The width of the broad lines has remained about 2700 km/s (FWHM). The [O III] flux dropped precipitously between 1989 and 1991, but continued monitoring shows the flux has been almost constant since. In contrast, radio observations over the period 1990-2011 show a decline rate inf the flux proportional to t**-4, far steeper than the rate observed earlier, suggesting that the primary shock has overrun the edge of a pre-SN wind., Comment: 28 pages, including 3 tables and 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

A previously undetected X-ray source (L_X<10**36 erg/s) in the strongly star-forming galaxy M83 entered an ultraluminous state between August 2009 and December 2010. It was first seen with Chandra on 23 December 2010 at L_X ~ 4 10**39 ergs/s, and has remained ultraluminous through our most recent observations in December 2011, with typical flux variation of a factor of two. The spectrum is well fitted by a combination of absorbed power-law and disk black-body models. While the relative contributions of the models varies with time, we have seen no evidence for a canonical state transition. The luminosity and spectral properties are consistent with accretion powered by a black hole with M_BH ~ 40-100 solar masses. In July 2011 we found a luminous, blue optical counterpart which had not been seen in deep HST observations obtained in August 2009. These optical observations suggest that the donor star is a low-mass star undergoing Roche-lobe overflow, and that the blue optical emission seen during the outburst is coming from an irradiated accretion disk. This source shows that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with low-mass companions are an important component of the ULX population in star-forming galaxies, and provides further evidence that the blue optical counterparts of some ULXs need not indicate a young, high-mass companion, but rather that they may indicate X-ray reprocessing., Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of a 100 ks {\it Chandra} observation of the NGC 404 nuclear region. The long exposure and excellent spatial resolution of {\it Chandra} has enabled us to critically examine the nuclear environment of NGC 404, which is known to host a nuclear star cluster and potentially an intermediate-mass black hole (on the order of a few times $10^5$ \Msun). We find two distinct X-ray sources: a hard, central point source coincident with the optical and radio centers of the galaxy, and a soft extended region that is coincident with areas of high H$\alpha$ emission and likely recent star formation. When we fit the 0.3-8 keV spectra of each region separately, we find the hard nuclear point source to be dominated by a power law (\PL = 1.88), while the soft off-nuclear region is best fit by a thermal plasma model ($kT$ = 0.67 keV). We therefore find evidence for both a power law component and hot gas in the nuclear region of NGC 404. We estimate the 2-10 keV luminosity to be 1.3$^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A low-level of diffuse X-ray emission is detected out to $\sim$15\as ($\sim$0.2 kpc) from the nucleus. We compare our results to the observed relationships between power law photon index and Eddington ratio for both X-ray binaries and low luminosity active galaxies and find NGC 404 to be consistent with other low luminosity active galaxies. We therefore favor the conclusion that NGC 404 harbors an intermediate-mass black hole accreting at a very low level., Comment: 7 figures

Supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been assumed to be the source of cosmic rays (CRs) up to the "knee" of the CR spectrum at 10^15 eV, accelerating particles to relativistic energies in their blast waves by the process of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). Since cosmic ray nuclei do not radiate efficiently, their presence must be inferred indirectly. Previous theoretical calculations and X-ray observations show that CR acceleration modifies significantly the structure of the SNR and greatly amplifies the interstellar magnetic field. We present new, deep X-ray observations of the remnant of Tycho's supernova (SN 1572, henceforth Tycho), which reveal a previously unknown, strikingly ordered pattern of non-thermal high-emissivity stripes in the projected interior of the remnant, with spacing that corresponds to the gyroradii of 10^14 - 10^15 eV} protons. Spectroscopy of the stripes shows the plasma to be highly turbulent on the (smaller) scale of the Larmor radii of TeV energy electrons. Models of the shock amplification of magnetic fields produce structure on the scale of the gyroradius of the highest energy CRs present, but they do not predict the highly-ordered pattern we observe. We interpret the stripes as evidence for acceleration of particles to near the knee of the CR spectrum in regions of enhanced magnetic turbulence, while the observed highly ordered pattern of these features provides a new challenge to models of DSA., Comment: accepted to ApJ Letters

Context. The Crab nebula has been used as a celestial calibration source of the X-ray flux and spectral shape for many years by X-ray astronomy missions. However, the object is often too bright for current and future missions equipped with instruments with improved sensitivity. Aims. We use G21.5-0.9 as a viable, fainter substitute to the Crab, which is another pulsar-wind nebula with a time-constant powerlaw spectrum with a flux of a few milli Crab in the X-ray band. Using this source, we conduct a cross-calibration study of the instruments onboard currently active observatories: Chandra ACIS, Suzaku XIS, Swift XRT, XMM-Newton EPIC (MOS and pn) for the soft-band, and INTEGRAL IBIS-ISGRI, RXTE PCA, and Suzaku HXD-PIN for the hard band. Methods. We extract spectra from all the instruments and fit them under the same astrophysical assumptions. We compare the spectral parameters of the G21.5-0.9 model: power-law photon index, H-equivalent column density of the interstellar photoelectric absorption, flux in the soft (2-8 keV) or hard (15-50 keV) energy band. Results. We identify the systematic differences in the best-fit parameter values unattributable to the statistical scatter of the data alone. We interpret these differences as due to residual cross-calibration problems. The differences can be as large as 20% and 9% for the soft-band flux and power-law index, respectively, and 46% for the hard-band flux. The results are plotted and tabulated as a useful reference for future calibration and scientific studies using multiple missions., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures, and 6 tables. A&A in press

M33 contains a large number of emission nebulae identified as supernova remnants (SNRs) based on the high [S II]:Ha ratios characteristic of shocked gas. Using Chandra data from the ChASeM33 survey with a 0.35-2 keV sensitivity of about 2 x 10**34 ergs/s, we have detected 82 of 137 SNR candidates, yielding confirmation of (or at least strongly support for) their SNR identifications. This provides the largest sample of remnants detected at optical and X-ray wavelengths in any galaxy, including the Milky Way. A spectral analysis of the seven X-ray brightest SNRs reveals that two, G98-31 and G98-35, have spectra that appear to indicate enrichment by ejecta from core-collapse supernova explosions. In general, the X-ray detected SNRs have soft X-ray spectra compared to the vast majority of sources detected along the line of sight to M33. It is unlikely that there are any other undiscovered thermally dominated X-ray SNRs with luminosities in excess of about 4 x 10**35 ergs/s in the portions of M33 covered by the ChASeM33 survey. We have used a combination of new and archival optical and radio observations to attempt to better understand why some objects are detected as X-ray sources and others are not. We have also developed a morphological classification scheme for the optically-identified SNRs, and discuss the efficacy of this scheme as a predictor of X-ray detectability. Finally, we have compared the SNRs found in M33 to those that have been observed in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. There are no close analogs of Cas A, Kepler's SNR, Tycho's SNR or the Crab Nebula in the regions of M33 surveyed, but we have found an X-ray source with a power law spectrum coincident with a small-diameter radio source that may be the first pulsar-wind nebula recognized in M33., Comment: 142 pages, including 8 talbes and 50 figures, to be published in ApJ Supplements

The flight calibration of the spectral response of CCD instruments below 1.5 keV is difficult in general because of the lack of strong lines in the on-board calibration sources typically available. We have been using 1E 0102.2-7219, the brightest supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud, to evaluate the response models of the ACIS CCDs on the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), the EPIC CCDs on the XMM-Newton Observatory, the XIS CCDs on the Suzaku Observatory, and the XRT CCD on the Swift Observatory. E0102 has strong lines of O, Ne, and Mg below 1.5 keV and little or no Fe emission to complicate the spectrum. The spectrum of E0102 has been well characterized using high-resolution grating instruments, namely the XMM-Newton RGS and the CXO HETG, through which a consistent spectral model has been developed that can then be used to fit the lower-resolution CCD spectra. We have also used the measured intensities of the lines to investigate the consistency of the effective area models for the various instruments around the bright O (~570 eV and 654 eV) and Ne (~910 eV and 1022 eV) lines. We find that the measured fluxes of the O VII triplet, the O VIII Ly-alpha line, the Ne IX triplet, and the Ne X Ly-alpha line generally agree to within +/-10 % for all instruments, with 28 of our 32 fitted normalizations within +/-10% of the RGS-determined value. The maximum discrepancies, computed as the percentage difference between the lowest and highest normalization for any instrument pair, are 23% for the O VII triplet, 24% for the O VIII Ly-alpha line, 13% for the Ne IX triplet, and 19% for the Ne X Ly-alpha line. If only the CXO and XMM are compared, the maximum discrepancies are 22% for the O VII triplet, 16% for the O VIII Ly-alpha line, 4% for the Ne IX triplet, and 12% for the Ne X Ly-alpha line., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, to be published in Proceedings of the SPIE 7011: Space Telescopes and Instrumentation II: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray 2008

The Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33) has acquired 7 fields of ACIS data covering M33 with 200 ks of exposure in each field. A catalog from the first 10 months of data, along with archival Chandra observations dating back to the year 2000, is currently available. We have searched these data for transient sources that are measured to have a 0.35-8.0 keV unabsorbed luminosity of at least 4$\times10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in one epoch and are not detected in another epoch. This set of the survey data has yielded seven such sources, including one previously-known supersoft source. We analyzed XMM-Newton data from the archive distributed over the years 2000 to 2003 to search for recurrent outbursts and to get a spectrum for the supersoft transient. We find only one recurrent transient in our sample. The X-ray spectra, light curves, and optical counterpart candidates of two of the other sources suggest that they are high-mass X-ray binaries. Archival Spitzer photometry and high X-ray absorption suggest that one of the sources is a highly variable background active galactic nucleus. The other three sources are more difficult to classify. The bright transient population of M33 appears to contain a large fraction of high-mass X-ray binaries compared with the transient populations of M31 and the Galaxy, reflecting the later morphology of M33., Comment: 33 pages, 2 tables, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an overview of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): A Deep Survey of the Nearest Face-on Spiral Galaxy. The 1.4 Ms survey covers the galaxy out to $R \approx 18\arcmin (\approx 4$ kpc). These data provide the most intensive, high spatial resolution assessment of the X-ray source populations available for the confused inner regions of M33. Mosaic images of the ChASeM33 observations show several hundred individual X-ray sources as well as soft diffuse emission from the hot interstellar medium. Bright, extended emission surrounds the nucleus and is also seen from the giant \hii regions NGC 604 and IC 131. Fainter extended emission and numerous individual sources appear to trace the inner spiral structure. The initial source catalog, arising from $\sim$~2/3 of the expected survey data, includes 394 sources significant at the $3\sigma$ confidence level or greater, down to a limiting luminosity (absorbed) of $\sim$1.6\ergs{35} (0.35 -- 8.0 keV). The hardness ratios of the sources separate those with soft, thermal spectra such as supernova remnants from those with hard, non-thermal spectra such as X-ray binaries and background active galactic nuclei. Emission extended beyond the Chandra point spread function is evident in 23 of the 394 sources. Cross-correlation of the ChASeM33 sources against previous catalogs of X-ray sources in M33 results in matches for the vast majority of the brighter sources and shows 28 ChASeM33 sources within 10\arcsec of supernova remnants identified by prior optical and radio searches. We present and interpret new X-ray data for M33SNR21, the brightest X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in M33. The SNR is in seen projection against (and appears to be interacting with) the bright HII region NGC592. Data for this source were obtained as part of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33) Very Large Project. The nearly on-axis Chandra data resolve the SNR into a ~5" diameter (20 pc at our assumed M33 distance of 817+/-58 kpc) slightly elliptical shell. The shell is brighter in the east, which suggests that it is encountering higher density material in that direction. The optical emission is coextensive with the X-ray shell in the north, but extends well beyond the X-ray rim in the southwest. Modeling the X-ray spectrum with an absorbed sedov model yields a shock temperature of 0.46(+0.01,-0.02) keV, an ionization timescale of n_e t = $2.1 (+0.2,-0.3) \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ s, and half-solar abundances (0.45 (+0.12, -0.09)). Assuming Sedov dynamics gives an average preshock H density of 1.7 +/- 0.3 cm$^{-3}$. The dynamical age estimate is 6500 +/- 600 yr, while the best fit $n_e t$ value and derived $n_e$ gives 8200 +/- 1700 yr; the weighted mean of the age estimates is 7600 +/- 600 yr. We estimate an X-ray luminosity (0.25-4.5 keV) of (1.2 +/- 0.2) times $10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ (absorbed), and (1.7 +/- 0.3) times $10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ (unabsorbed), in good agreement with the recent XMM-Newton determination. No significant excess hard emission was detected; the luminosity $\le 1.2\times 10^{35}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ (2-8 keV) for any hard point source., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures (3 color). ApJ (in press)

Suzaku observed the molecular cloud MBM12 and a blank field less than 3 degrees away to separate the local and distant components of the diffuse soft X-ray background. Towards MBM12, a local (D< 275 pc) O VII emission line was clearly detected with an intensity of 3.5 ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1}$ (or line units, LU), and the O VIII flux was <0.34 LU. The origin of this O VII emission could be hot gas in the Local Hot Bubble (LHB), charge exchange between oxygen ions in the solar wind (SWCX) and geocoronal or interplanetary material, or a combination of the two. If entirely from the LHB, the implied temperature and emission measure would predict 1/4 keV emission in excess of observations. There is no evidence in the X-ray light curve or solar wind data for a significant contribution from geocoronal SWCX. In any case, the observed O VII flux represents an upper limit to both the LHB emission and interplanetary SWCX in this direction. The off-cloud observation was performed immediately following the on-cloud. The net off-cloud O VII and O VIII intensities were (respectively) 2.34\pm0.33 and 0.77\pm0.16 LU, after subtracting the on-cloud foreground emission. Assuming the LHB and SWCX components did not change, these increases can be attributed to more distant Galactic disk, halo, or extragalactic emission. If the distant O VII and O VIII emission is from a thermal plasma in collisional equilibrium beyond the Galactic disk, a temperature of (2.1\pm0.1)\times10^6 K with an emission measure of (4\pm0.6)\times10^-3} cm^{-6}pc is inferred., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted by PASJ

We report the detection of molecular clouds around the X-ray bright interior feature in the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 (G109.1-1.0). This feature, called the Lobe, has been previously suggested to be the result of an interaction of the SNR shock wave with a molecular cloud complex. We present new high resolution X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and new high resolution CO data from the Five College Radio Observatory which show the interaction region with the cloud complex in greater detail. The CO data reveal three clouds around the Lobe in the velocity interval -57 < v < -52 km s^-1. The velocity profiles of 12CO at various parts of the east cloud are well fit with a Gaussian; however, at the position where the CO cloud and the Lobe overlap, the velocity profile has an additional component towards higher negative velocities. The molecular hydrogen density in this part of the cloud is relatively high (N_H2 = 1.9 x 10^20 cm^-2), whereas the foreground absorption in X-rays (N_H = 4.5 x 10^21 cm^-2), obtained from Chandra data, is lower than in other parts of the cloud and in the north and south cloud. These results indicate that this cloud has been hit by the SNR blast wave on the western side, forming the bright X-ray Lobe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 3 figures

We present FUSE and XMM-Newton data for the reverse shock of the O-rich SNR 1E0102.2-7219 in the SMC. The FUSE observations cover three regions with significantly different optical [O III] intensities, all associated with the relatively bright part of the X-ray ring. Emission lines of O VI 1032, 1038 are clearly detected in the FUSE spectra. By combining this O VI doublet emission with the O VII triplet and O VIII Lyalpha fluxes from the XMM-Newton spectra and assuming a non-equilibrium ionization model with a single ionization timescale for the spectra, we are able to find a narrow range of temperatures and ionization timescales that are consistent with the respective line ratios. However, if we assume a plane-parallel shock model with a distribution of ionization timescales, the O VI emission appears to be inconsistent with O VII and O VIII in X-rays. We also analyze the total XMM-Newton EPIC-MOS 1/2 spectra for the three regions. The X-ray spectra are dominated by strong emission lines of O, Ne, and Mg, however, we detect an emission component that accounts for 14 - 25% of the flux and can be attributed to shocked ISM. We find that there is no consistent set of values for the temperature and ionization timescale which can explain the observed line ratios for O, Ne, and Mg. This would be consistent with a structured distribution of the ejecta as the O, Ne, Mg would have interacted with the reverse shock at different times., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figues, Fig. 1 as JPEG. We present results of a search for supernova remnants (SNRs) in archival Chandra images of M33. We have identified X-ray SNRs by comparing the list of Chandra, X-ray sources in M33 with tabulations of SNR candidates identified from (1) elevated [S II]/Halpha ratios in the optical, and (2) radio spectral indices. Of the 98 optically known SNRs in M33, 22 have been detected at > 3-sigma level in the soft band (0.35-1.1 keV). At least four of these SNR candidates are spatially extended based on a comparison of the data to simulated images of point sources. Aside from the optically matching SNRs, we have found one soft X-ray source in M33 which exhibits no optical emission and is coincident with a known radio source. The radio spectral index of this source is consistent with particle acceleration in shocks, leading us to suggest that it is a non-radiative SNR. We have also found new optical counterparts to two soft X-ray SNRs in M33. Pending confirmation from optical spectroscopy, the identification of these two optical counterparts increases the total number of known optically emitting SNRs in M33 to 100. This brings the total number of identified SNRs with X-ray counterparts, including those exclusively detected by the XMM-Newton survey of M33, to 37 SNRs. We find that while there are a similar number of confirmed X-ray SNRs in M33 and the LMC with X-ray luminosities in excess of 1e35 ergs/s, nearly 40% of the LMC SNRs are brighter than 1e36 ergs/s, while only 13% of the M33 sample exceed this luminosity. The differences in luminosity distributions cannot be fully explained by uncertainty in spectral model parameters, and is not fully accounted for by abundance differences between the galaxies (abridged)., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We introduce a million-second observation of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The bipolar structure of the Si-rich ejecta (NE jet and SW counterpart) is clearly evident in the new images, and their chemical similarity is confirmed by their spectra. These are most likely due to jets of ejecta as opposed to cavities in the circumstellar medium, since we can reject simple models for the latter. The properties of these jets and the Fe-rich ejecta will provide clues to the explosion of Cas A., Comment: 4 pages LaTeX with 2 figures; ApJL,in press

We present an analysis of data from both the Rontgen Satellite (ROSAT), and the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) of the supernova remnant (SNR) G18.95-1.1. We find that the X-ray emission from G18.95-1.1 is predominantly thermal, heavily absorbed and can be best described by an NEI (nonequilibrium ionization) model with a temperature around 0.9keV, and an ionization timescale of 1.1x10^10 /cm3/s. We find only marginal evidence for non-solar abundances. Comparisons between 21 cm HI absorption data and derived parameters from our spectral analysis strongly suggest a relatively near-by remnant (a distance of about 2kpc). Above 4keV, we identify a small region of emission located at the tip of the central, flat spectrum bar-like feature in the radio image. We examine two possibilities for this emission region: a temperature variation within the remnant or a pulsar wind nebula (PWN). The current data do not allow us to distinguish between these possible explanations. In the scenario where this high-energy emission region corresponds to a PWN, our analysis suggests a rotational loss rate for the unseen pulsar of about 7x10^35 erg/s and a ratio Lr/Lx about 3.6 for the entire PWN, slightly above the maximum ratio (3.4 for Vela) measured in known PWN., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ. The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory is suffering a gradual loss of low energy sensitivity due to a buildup of a contaminant. High resolution spectra of bright astrophysical sources using the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) have been analyzed in order to determine the nature of the contaminant by measuring the absorption edges. The dominant element in the contaminant is carbon. Edges due to oxygen and fluorine are also detectable. Excluding H, we find that C, O, and F comprise >80%, 7%, and 7% of the contaminant by number, respectively. Nitrogen is less than 3% of the contaminant. We will assess various candidates for the contaminating material and investigate the growth of the layer with time. We discuss the flight calibration of the spectral response of the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on-board the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The spectral resolution and sensitivity of the ACIS instrument have both been evolving over the course of the mission. The spectral resolution of the frontside-illuminated (FI) CCDs changed dramatically in the first month of the mission due to radiation damage. Since that time, the spectral resolution of the FI CCDs and the backside-illuminated (BI) CCDs have evolved gradually with time. We demonstrate the efficacy of charge-transfer inefficiency (CTI) correction algorithms which recover some of the lost performance. The detection efficiency of the ACIS instrument has been declining throughout the mission, presumably due to a layer of contamination building up on the filter and/or CCDs. We present a characterization of the energy dependence of the excess absorption and demonstrate software which models the time dependence of the absorption from energies of 0.4 keV and up. The spectral redistribution function and the detection efficiency are well-characterized at energies from 1.5 to 8.0 keV. The calibration at energies below 1.5 keV is challenging because of the lack of strong lines in the calibration source and also because of the inherent non-linear dependence with energy of the CTI and the absorption by the contamination layer. We have been using data from celestial sources with relatively simple spectra to determine the quality of the calibration below 1.5 keV. The analysis of these observations demonstrate that the CTI correction recovers a significant fraction of the spectral resolution of the FI CCDs and the models of the time-dependent absorption result in consistent measurements of the flux at low energies for data from a BI (S3) CCD., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, SPIE style file, To appear in "Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation 2002" (SPIE Conference Proceedings), eds. The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), NASA's latest ``Great Observatory'', was launched on July 23, 1999 and reached its final orbit on August 7, 1999. The CXO is in a highly elliptical orbit, approximately 140,000 km x 10,000 km, and has a period of approximately 63.5 hours (~2.65 days). Communication with the CXO nominally consists of 1-hour contacts spaced 8-hours apart. Thus, once a communication link has been established, it is very important that the health and safety status of the scientific instruments as well as the Observatory itself be determined as quickly as possible. In this paper, we focus exclusively on the automated health and safety monitoring scripts developed for the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) to use during those 1-hour contacts. ACIS is one of the two focal plane instruments on-board the CXO. We present an overview of the real-time ACIS Engineering Data Web Page and the alert schemes developed for monitoring the instrument status during each communication contact. A suite of HTML and PERL scripts monitors the instrument hardware house-keeping electronics (i.e., voltages and currents) and temperatures during each contact. If a particular instrument component is performing either above or below pre-established operating parameters, a sequence of email and alert pages are spawned to the Science Operations Team of the Chandra X-ray Observatory Center so that the anomaly can be quickly investigated and corrective actions taken if necessary. We also briefly discuss the tools used to monitor the real-time science telemetry reported by the ACIS flight software. The MIT and CXC ACIS teams have explored a number of measures to ameliorate the effects of radiation damage suffered by the ACIS FI CCDs. One of these measures is a novel CCD read-out method called ``squeegee mode''. A variety of different implementations of the squeegee mode have now been tested on the I0 CCD. Our results for the fitted FWHM at Al-K$\alpha$ and Mn-K$\alpha$ clearly demonstrate that all the squeegee modes provide improved performance in terms of reducing CTI and improving spectral resolution. Our analysis of the detection efficiency shows that the so-called squeegee modes ``Vanilla'' and ``Maximum Observing Efficiency'' provide the same detection efficiency as the standard clocking, once the decay in the intensity of the radioactive source has been taken into account. The squeegee modes which utilize the slow parallel transfer (``Maximum Spectral Resolution'', ``Maximum Angular Resolution'', and ``Sub-Array'') show a significantly lower detection efficiency than the standard clocking. The slow parallel transfer squeegee modes exhibit severe grade migration from flight grade 0 to flight grade 64 and a smaller migration into ASCA g7. The flight calibration of the spectral response of the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) below 1.5 keV is difficult because of the lack of strong lines in the calibration source on-board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We have been using 1E0102.2-7219 (the brightest supernova remnant in the SMC) to evaluate the ACIS response matrices, since this remnant has strong lines of O, Ne and Mg below 1.5 keV. The spectrum of 1E0102.2-7219 has been well-characterized using the gratings on Chandra and XMM. We have used the high-resolution spectral data from both gratings instruments to develop a spectral model for the CCD spectra. Fits with this model are sensitive to any problems with the gain calibration and the spectral redistribution model. We have fit the data with the latest response matrix for the S3 device released in August 2001 (available in CALDB 2.7 or higher). We have also applied the charge-transfer inefficiency (CTI) correction software (version 1.37) developed at Penn State to both the Backside-illuminated (BI) and Front-side illuminated (FI) data and fit the data with the associated CTI-corrected response matrices. All fits show a significant improvement in the low energy response with the new matrices. The newly discovered supernova remnant G266.2-1.2 (RX J0852.0--0462), along the line of sight to the Vela SNR, was observed with ASCA for 120 ks. We find that the X-ray spectrum is featureless, and well described by a power law, extending to three the class of shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal X-ray emission. Like G347.3-0.5, this low-latitude remnant displays discrete regions of enhanced emission along the rim as well as faint nonthermal emission from the interior. We derive limits on the thermal content of the remnant emission, although the presence of the Vela SNR compromises our ability to seriously constrain a low temperature component. Limits placed on the amount of Sc-K emission are compared with the expected flux based upon the reported 44Ti emission from G2662.-1.2. We also report on an unresolved X-ray source surrounded by diffuse emission near the center of the remnant. The properties of the source are not well determined, but appear consistent with the interpretation that the source is a neutron star surrounded by a synchrotron nebula. Alternatively, the source may be associated with one of two stars located within the positional error circle, but this appears somewhat unlikely., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; to appear in the Feb. 20, 2001 issue of ApJ

G328.4+0.2 is a moderately small (5 arcmin x 5arcmin) Galactic radio supernova remnant (SNR) at a distance of at least 17 kpc that has been long suggested to be Crab-like. Here we report on the detection with ASCA of the X-ray emission from the SNR. The X-ray source is faint with an observed flux of (6.0 +/- 0.8)E-13 erg/s/cm^2 over the 2-10 keV band. The emission is heavily cut-off at low energies and no flux is detected below 2 keV. Spectral analysis confirms that the column density to the source is indeed large, N_H ~ 1E23 atoms/cm^2, and consistent with the total column density of hydrogen through the Galaxy at this position. Good fits to the spectrum can be obtained for either thermal plasma or nonthermal power-law models, although the lack of detected line emission as well as other evidence argues against the former interpretation. The power-law index we find, \alpha_P = 2.9 (+0.9,-0.8), is consistent with other Crab-like SNRs. In the radio band G328.4+0.2 is nearly as luminous as the Crab Nebula, yet in the X-ray band luminosity it is some 70 times fainter. Nevertheless its inferred soft X-ray band luminosity is greater than all but the brightest pulsar-powered synchrotron nebulae and implies that G328.4+0.2 contains a rapidly spinning, as yet undetected, pulsar that is losing energy at a rate of approximately 1E38 erg/s., Comment: 6 pages, including 4 postscript figs, LaTeX. The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) was launched on July 23, 1999 and reached its final orbit on August 7, 1999. The CXO is in a highly elliptical orbit, approximately 140,000 km x 10,000 km, and has a period of approximately 63.5 hours (~ 2.65 days). It transits the Earth's Van Allen belts once per orbit during which no science observations can be performed due to the high radiation environment. The Chandra X-ray Observatory Center (CXC) currently uses the National Space Science Data Center's ``near Earth'' AP-8/AE-8 radiation belt model to predict the start and end times of passage through the radiation belts. However, our scheduling software uses only a simple dipole model of the Earth's magnetic field. The resulting B, L magnetic coordinates, do not always give sufficiently accurate predictions of the start and end times of transit of the Van Allen belts. We show this by comparing to the data from Chandra's on-board radiation monitor, the EPHIN (Electron, Proton, Helium Instrument particle detector) instrument. We present evidence that demonstrates this mis-timing of the outer electron radiation belt as well as data that also demonstrate the significant variablity of one radiation belt transit to the next as experienced by the CXO. We also present an explanation for why the dipole implementation of the AP-8/AE-8 model is not ideally suited for the CXO. Lastly, we provide a brief discussion of our on-going efforts to identify a model that accounts for radiation belt variability, geometry, and one that can be used for observation scheduling purposes., Comment: 12 pgs, 6 figs, for SPIE 4012 (Paper 76)

We present observations of the young, Oxygen-rich supernova remnant 1E0102.2-7219 taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory during Chandra's Orbital Activation and Checkout phase. The boundary of the blast wave shock is clearly seen for the first time, allowing the diameter of the remnant and the mean blast wave velocity to be determined accurately. The prominent X-ray bright ring of material may be the result of the reverse shock encountering ejecta; the radial variation of O VII vs. O VIII emission indicates an ionizing shock propagating inwards, possibly through a strong density gradient in the ejecta. We compare the X-ray emission to Australia Telescope Compact Array 6 cm radio observations (Amy and Ball) and to archival Hubble Space Telescope [O III] observations. The ring of radio emission is predominantly inward of the outer blast wave, consistent with an interpretation as synchrotron radiation originating behind the blast wave, but outward of the bright X-ray ring of emission. Many (but not all) of the prominent optical filaments are seen to correspond to X-ray bright regions. We obtain an upper limit of ~9e33 erg/s (3 sigma) on any potential pulsar X-ray emission from the central region., Comment: Accepted for pulication in Ap. J. Recent ASCA observations of G347.3-0.5, an SNR discovered in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, reveal nonthermal emission from a region along the northwestern shell (Koyama et al. 1997). Here we report on new pointed ASCA observations of G347.3-.5 which confirm this result for all the bright shell regions and also reveal similar emission, although with slightly different spectral properties, from the remainder of the SNR. Curiously, no thermal X-ray emission is detected anywhere in the remnant. We derive limits on the amount of thermal emitting material present in G347.3-0.5 and present new radio continuum, CO and infrared results which indicate that the remnant is distant and of moderate age. We show that our observations are broadly consistent with a scenario that has most of the supernova remnant shock wave still within the stellar wind bubble of its progenitor star, while part of it appears to be interacting with denser material. A point source at the center of the remnant has spectral properties similar to those expected for a neutron star and may represent the compact relic of the supernova progenitor., Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, 8 figures (5 PS, 3 jpg), uses emulateapj.sty. During its first 18 years of operation, the cold (about -60degC) optical blocking filters of the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, has accumulated a growing layer of molecular contamination, which attenuates low-energy x rays. Over the past several years, the accumulation rate, spatial distribution, and composition have changed. This evolution has motivated further analysis of contamination migration within and near the ACIS cavity, in part to evaluate potential bake-out scenarios intended to reduce the level of contamination. This paper, the fourth on this topic, reports the results of recent contamination-migration simulations and their relevance to a decision whether to bake-out the ACIS instrument.
