IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility- DEMO-Oriented Neutron Early Source) - a powerful neutron irradiation facility for studies and certification of materials to be used in fusion reactors - is planned as part of the European roadmap to fusion electricity. Its main goal will be to characterize and to qualify materials under irradiation in a neutron field similar to the one faced in a fusion reactor. The intense neutron source is produced by impinging deuterons, from high-power linear deuteron accelerator, on a liquid lithium curtain. The facility has accomplished the preliminary design phase and is currently in its detailed design phase. At the present stage, it is important to have a clear understanding of how the commissioning of the facility will be performed, especially the commissioning of a 5 MW CW deuteron beam, together with the lithium curtain and the beam optimization for the neutron irradiation. An integrated multi-physics coupling system has been developed for fusion reactor systems analyses. This system has an advanced Monte Carlo (MC) modeling approach for converting complex CAD models to MC models with hybrid constructive solid and unstructured mesh geometries, and a high-fidelity coupling approach for data mapping from MC to thermal hydraulics and structural mechanics codes. The system was proven to be reliable, robust and efficient through verification calculations.

IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility- DEMO Oriented NEutron Source) is a neutron irradiation facility aiming at providing material irradiation data for the construction of DEMOnstration fusion power plants. This work presents nuclear analyses and associated neutronics modeling conducted on an updated design of the High Flux Test Module (HFTM) of IFMIF-DONES. Neutron fluxes, damage dose rates and gradients, gas production and nuclear heating have been calculated for the standard profile in 20 × 5 cm$^{2}$ and a reduced size in 10 × 5 cm$^{2}$ of the deuteron beam with 40 MeV energy and 125 mA current. The results indicate that the reduced beam can provide higher damage dose rates fulfilling the DONES requirement. On the other hand, the reduced beam size results in less irradiation uniformity, higher gas production to damage dose ratios, as well as stronger peak nuclear heating.
