ISBN 978-3-95606-034-2., This PTB report comprises all oral presentations and posters presented at the Nov. 2012 workshop on "Spectral reference line data for atmospheric monitoring" held at Wolfenbüttel castle and PTB Braunschweig. The workshop was organized by the EUMETRISPEC project which is part of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). The main aim was to present and discuss the stakeholders' views and needs. The stakeholders are from metrological organisations as well as from ground- and satellite-based monitoring networks and from quantum chemical modelling groups - in total 49 scientists representing 31 institutions from 12 nations. During the workshop, nine invited 45min-talks were given, covering spectroscopic and metrological key topics, accompanied by six additional presentations on EUMETRISPEC and the EMRP. The PTB report includes the authorized powerpoint presentations, as well as all 21 posters from 91 authors presented during the workshop.

Abstract

A microwave torch in nitrogen has been designed for the evaporation of aluminium (Al) wires potentially to be used for the synthesis of aluminium nitride (AlN). The torch, created on the tip of a metallic nozzle, is compatible with vacuum conditions and can be operated in continuous mode up to atmospheric pressure. Al wires to be evaporated are fed through the axis of the nozzle. Time‐resolved photography is applied to analyse the time evolution and stability of the interaction of the Al wire with the discharge. Optical emission spectroscopy is used (a) for the determination of the gas temperature of the active discharge, which is found to be in the range 1500–3500 K depending on the experimental conditions, and (b) for the estimation of the densities of Al and N atoms in the afterglow region, which are in the range 1011–1012 and of 1013–1014 cm−3, respectively. It is found that the part of the Al wire that is directly exposed to the nitrogen torch absorbs a considerable amount of the microwave energy, supporting its evaporation. In addition, the dissociation of molecular nitrogen has to be considered as an important process of power dissipation. Further technical development of the torch is necessary for the envisaged synthesis of AlN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

63. Oxidation of NO into NO2 by surface adsorbed O atoms

Abstract

Plasma-surface interactions are increasingly recognised as a key factor in explaining molecule production and conversion processes. In order to scrutinise such effects well-defined surface and gas phase conditions are required. Hence, the inner surface of a Pyrex tube was treated by a capacitively coupled RF plasma at low pressure. The post-plasma oxidation of gas mixtures containing 1 % NO into NO2 has been studied by means of quantum cascade laser absorption spectroscopy in the mid-infrared spectral range. The plasma pre-treatment experiments with oxygen containing precursors suggest O atom adsorption on the Pyrex tube with a surface density of 2.7 x 1014 cm–2. A simple kinetic model was developed and shows good agreement with the measured NO and NO2 gas phase concentrations. In the model a fraction of the surface is considered to be covered with chemisorption sites where atoms and molecules can be adsorbed, whereas they can be removed only by recombination (© 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

In plasma processing the efficient dissociation of molecules is the key element for producing the precursors for plasma deposition, surface modification, and molecule conversion. During these processes always molecules are generated, as e.g. H2 in deposition of hydrogenated carbon or molecules may be converted to new molecules. Measurement of molecules is thus a possible way to investigate the reactive pathways in plasma chemistry. It appears that the surface plays a pertinent role in the formation of molecules. This became clear from the study of several plasmas, including the remote plasma of an expanding thermal plasma. Measurements by mass spectrometry and infrared absorption indicate several dominant pathways as re-formation of N2 and O2 besides a small percentage of NO in N/O, the formation of ammonia in N/H, of water in H/O and CO and H2 in H/C/N/O containing plasmas. The presence of excited molecules presumably generated at the surface bordering the plasma indicates the presence of modified chemistry in a plasma environment.

Abstract

Plasmas in interaction with surfaces are of key importance in a wide range of applications, which include materials technology, microelectronics, environmental issues, and biomedicine. The intense use of plasma technological processes demands proper plasma diagnostic techniques for monitoring, controlling and optimization purposes in industrial environments. In particular, for the improvement of the efficiency of a production process, in situ diagnostic techniques with online capabilities are favorable. From the middle of the last decade a variety of phenomena in molecular non-equilibrium plasmas in which many short-lived and stable species are produced have been successfully studied with quantum cascade laser absorption spectroscopy (QCLAS) in the mid-infrared spectral range. It has been possible to determine absolute concentrations of species, temperatures, degrees of dissociation, dynamics of reaction processes and phenomena involving plasma-surface interactions using spectroscopy, thereby providing a link with chemical and kinetic modelling of the plasma. Since quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emit near room temperature, i.e., without the need of cryogenic cooling, very compact and robust spectroscopic instruments can be designed. This has stimulated the adaptation of infrared spectroscopic techniques to industrial requirements. Recent applications of infrared absorption spectroscopy using QCLs for in situ monitoring of plasma processes in industrial environments are reviewed.
