Este articulo examina el impacto de los cambios en el contexto económico sobre la configuración de las expectativas educativas entre alumnos de 14 años. Analizamos las expectativas de los logros educativos condicionadas al rendimiento escolar y comparamos nuestros resultados entre países para distintos niveles de riqueza. Esperamos que un entorno económico cambiante tengo un impacto tanto sobre nivel general de las expectativas condicionadas como sobre el grado de desigualdad educativa por origen social. Empleando datos agrupados de encuestas TIMSS 2003, 2007 y 2011 sobre competencias de alumnos de 8.o curso, estimamos un conjunto de modelos multinivel de efectos aleatorios. Nuestros resultados confirman la existencia regularidades sistemáticas entre países y sugieren que las recesiones económicas conducen a un aumento de las desigualdades educativas por origen social, This paper explores the impact of changes in the economic context on the configuration of educational expectations among 14 years old students. We analyze expectations of educational attainment conditional on school performance and compare our results across countries with varying levels of wealth. We expect a changing economic environment to impact both the overall level of conditional aspirations and the slope of educational inequality by social origin. Using pooled data from TIMSS 2003, 2007 and 2011 surveys of competences among 8th graders, we estimate a set of random constant multilevel models. Our results confirm the existence of systematic cross-country regularities and suggest that economic down times lead to a growth of educational inequalities by social backgrounds

El probable retraso de la edad legal de jubilación en España, de 65 a 67 años, plantea diferentes cuestiones, entre las cuales cabe destacar la de cómo afectará semejante cambio a los diferentes grupos de empleados y asalariados. El análisis que se presenta en este artículo pone de manifiesto la existencia de grupos con diferentes grados de vulnerabilidad ante una reforma consistente en alargar el periodo de la vida laboral. Los profesionales, y en particular los que cuentan con niveles de cualificación más elevados (la ‘clase de servicio alta’), se verá previsiblemente menos afectada por el retraso de la edad de jubilación, tanto porque afronta un menor riesgo de expulsión del mercado de trabajo, como porque encuentra en el sistema de pensiones incentivos para alargar su carrera de cotización.

This objective is pursued by means of a statistical analysis of large-scale comparable survey data. In short, three points of emphasis characterize this study in comparison with previous research on the topic: 1) the focus on social stratification in terms of gender and class differentials; 2) the central attention paid to social norms of aging; and 3) the joint consideration of individual and country level mechanisms in explaining retirement timing. The review of the previous literature in the second chapter demonstrates that the currently available theoretical approaches by themselves are inappropriate for explaining social variability in retirement timing. Building on the life course paradigm and social class theory, I consequently outline a novel analytical framework for the study of differential retirement behavior. It can be characterized as a choice-within-constraints approach (chapter 3), which essentially focuses on differences between older workers in age norms and late-career opportunity structures, paying special attention on class and gender disparities. In the fourth chapter, I gather empirical evidence on international and individual differences in retirement age norms in Western Europe on the basis of data from the European Social Survey (ESS). Subsequently, I turn to examining actual retirement behavior in the fifth chapter. Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) a series of event-history models is used to scrutinize the determining factors of retirement timing at the country and individual level variation. In chapters 6 and 7, two case studies on Germany and Spain examine the impact of pension legislation on social stratification in retirement in a detailed manner. The two country studies are based on ad-hoc module on the transition from work into retirement, which has been implemented in the respective national labor force surveys (Encuesta de la Población Activa (EPA) and Mikrozensus) of 2006.

Der Beitrag untersucht die Strukturen sozialer Ungleichheit in der zeitlichen Gestaltung des Übergangs in den Ruhestand. Das Hauptinteresse gilt den Handlungsspielräumen von in Deutschland lebenden Männern beim Eintritt in den Altersrentenbezug. Die präsentierten Ergebnisse stützen sich auf Auswertungen des Scientific Use File Versichertenrentenzugang 2004. Das verwendete ereignisanalytische Modell berücksichtigt die maßgeblichen Altersgrenzen der Rentenver¬sicherung. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass das Timing des Übergangs in den Ruhestand primär von der individuellen Erwerbssituation geprägt wird. Die Wahlfreiheit in Bezug auf den individuellen Zeitpunkt des Renteneintritts ist aufgrund mangelnder Beschäftigungschancen älterer Arbeitnehmer häufig eingeschränkt. Auch gesundheitliche Probleme präjudizieren den vorzeitigen Renteneintritt. Andererseits sind teilweise - wie etwa im Altersteilzeitmodell - finanzielle Frühverrentungsan¬reize ausschlaggebend für den vorzeitigen Rentenzugang. Späte Renteneintritte werden hingegen vermehrt bei Hochqualifizierten und Gutverdienern beobachtet, wobei ein positiver Zusammenhang von beruflichem Status und Erwerbsneigung zur Geltung kommt. Die Analyse verweist außerdem auf die Relevanz lebenslaufbezogener Normen im Übergang in den Ruhestand. Insbesondere bei Männern mit kurzen Versichertenbiografien, die aufgrund der rentenrechtlichen Wartezeiten lediglich Anspruch auf Regelaltersrente besitzen, erweisen sich die institutionalisierten Renteneintrittspfade als rigide Verlaufsmuster f ür den Übergang in den Ruhestand., This article examines the determinants of men's retirement ages in Germany. In particular, it assesses the degree of control exercised by members of different social groups over the timing of their retirement, taking account of statutory retirement ages by the use of an event history model. The findings are based on micro-data provided by the Research Data Center of the German Statutory Pension Insurance - the Scientific Use File Versichertenrentenzugang [Pension Insurance Entry] 2004. Frequent cases of involuntary retirement due to unemployment or poor health contrast starkly with another class of early retirees, whose retirement decisions are driven primarily by financial incentives (e.g. by Altersteilzeit [Pre-retirement Part-time Employment Model]). Late entries to old age pensions can be observed more often among men with better education and higher earnings. This pattern is explained mainly by a positive association between men's occupational status and their propensity to work longer. Moreover, social in regard to individual biographies affect people's preferences about their exit from work. Altogether, the institutionalized framework imposes serious restrictions on individuals' pathways to retirement. Especially men with irregular working careers who are not entitled to an old age pension before reaching the age of 65 experience very limited choice.

"Mit der Anhebung der Altersgrenzen haben sich die Rahmenbedingungen des Übergangs von der Erwerbsarbeit in den Ruhestand essentiell verändert. Durch die Einführung von Abschlägen für den vorzeitigen Renteneintritt erhält die Erforschung der Strukturen sozialer Ungleichheit im Verrentungsprozess sozialpolitische Relevanz. Vor diesem Hintergrund präsentiert der Vortrag Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung zu den Bestimmungsfaktoren des Renteneintrittsalters. Im Zentrum des lebenslaufsoziologischen Forschungsansatzes stehen die Handlungsoptionen und Entscheidungsgründe der Akteure beim Timing des Rentenübergangs. Die Datenbasis der Analyse bildet der Scientific Use File Versichertenrentenzugang 2004, der vom Forschungsdatenzentrum der Rentenversicherung aus prozessproduzierten Daten erstellt wurde. In der Modellbildung wird der Übergang von Männern der Rentenzugangskohorte 2004 in den Altersrentenbezug ereignisanalytisch rekonstruiert. Dazu wird ein Piecewise Constant Exponential Model geschätzt, das der Bedeutung der rentenrechtlichen Altersgrenzen Rechnung trägt. Die Mehrheit der Rentenzugänge erfolgt mit 60, 63 oder 65 Jahren. Die multivariate Datenanalyse belegt, dass sich das Renteneintrittsrisiko mit steigender Anzahl an Entgeltpunkten erhöht. Während sich in frühen Renteneintritten - etwa nach Altersteilzeit - überwiegend eine hohe Freizeitpräferenz offenbart, zeigt sich eine Minderheit resistent gegenüber bestehenden Frühverrentungsanreizen. Der Zusammenhang zwischen der Bildung der Beschäftigten und der Erwerbsneigung entspricht einschlägigen Befunden zur betrieblichen Ausgliederung älterer Arbeitnehmer und verweist weiterhin auf den Einfluss lebenslaufbezogener Normen. Bezüglich der Handlungsspielräume der Akteure werden soziale Ungleichheiten sichtbar. Wie das hohe Renteneintrittsrisiko nach vorhergehender Arbeitslosigkeit demonstriert, bestehen vor allem für ältere Arbeitnehmer mit geringem Humankapital wenige Alternativen zum frühzeitigen Ruhestand. Auch gesundheitliche Probleme beschleunigen den Renteneintritt. Hingegen müssen Versicherte mit untypischen Erwerbsbiografien ihre Verrentung aufgrund der Zugangsvoraussetzungen der GRV mitunter aufschieben. Insgesamt belegt die starke Abhängigkeit des Renteneintrittsalters vom letzten sozialrechtlichen Status, dass die Akteure über die verschiedenen institutionalisierten Renteneintrittspfade mit hoher Bestimmtheit in die entsprechenden Rentenarten geführt werden." The meritocratic paradigm, predominant in our society, consists of the idea that success in life is determined by the combination of ability and effort. However, individuals only have agency over effort, a concept that has remained understudied in comparison to its importance for equality of opportunity. Bridging interdisciplinary literature from sociology, economics and psychology, this thesis seeks to expand the knowledge on the relevance of effort for educational processes and the transmission of social inequality. To expand the knowledge on effort, two measures of actual exerted effort are employed. The first reflects test effort, measured with the PISA test. The second is an experimental measure of cognitive effort stemming from real-effort tasks. These measures are used in different contexts (Australia, Spain and cross-country) to analyze the impact of effort on short and long-run educational outcomes. Furthermore, the thesis tests mechanisms based on sociological theories through which effort could contribute to the reproduction of social inequality. The results demonstrate that effort is indeed a crucial determinant of educational attainment. The magnitude of the impact is comparable to the effect of cognitive skills. Nevertheless, effort also contributes to the transmission of social advantage. The specific mechanisms and the implications for the conception of meritocracy and equality of opportunity are discussed.
