The cellular environment is crowded with macromolecules of different shapes and sizes. The effect of this macromolecular crowding has been studied in a variety of synthetic crowding environments: two popular examples are the compact colloid-like Ficoll macromolecule, and the globular protein bovine serum albumin (BSA). Recent studies have indicated a significant component of bound or surface-associated water in these crowders reduces the available free volume. In this work, Brillouin light scattering experiments were performed on aqueous solutions of Ficoll 70 and Ficoll 400 with concentrations ranging from 1 wt% to 35 wt% and BSA with concentrations of 1 wt% to 27 wt%. From the dependence of spectral peak parameters on polymer concentration, we determined fundamental solution properties: hypersound velocity, adiabatic bulk modulus and compressibility, apparent viscosity, and hypersound attenuation. Existing theory that ignores intermolecular interactions can only capture the observed linear trends in the frequency shift up to a threshold concentration, beyond which a quadratic term accounting for intermolecular interactions is necessary. This likely indicates a transition from the dilute to semi-dilute regime. Continuous tracking of boxers across multiple training sessions helps quantify traits required for the well-known ten-point-must system. However, continuous tracking of multiple athletes across multiple training sessions remains a challenge, because it is difficult to precisely segment bout boundaries in a recorded video stream. Furthermore, re-identification of the same athlete over different period or even within the same bout remains a challenge. Difficulties are further compounded when a single fixed view video is captured in top-view. This work summarizes our progress in creating a system in an economically single fixed top-view camera. Specifically, we describe improved algorithm for bout transition detection and in-bout continuous player identification without erroneous ID updation or ID switching. From our custom collected data of ~11 hours (athlete count: 45, bouts: 189), our transition detection algorithm achieves 90% accuracy and continuous ID tracking achieves IDU=0, IDS=0.

Thermal rectifiers are devices that have different thermal conductivities in opposing directions of heat flow. The realization of practical thermal rectifiers relies significantly on a sound understanding of the underlying mechanisms of asymmetric heat transport, and two-dimensional materials offer a promising opportunity in this regard owing to their simplistic structures together with a vast possibility of tunable imperfections. However, the in-plane thermal rectification mechanisms in 2D materials like graphene having directional gradients of grain sizes have remained elusive. In fact, understanding the heat transport mechanisms in polycrystalline graphene, which are more practical to synthesize than large-scale single-crystal graphene, could potentially allow a unique opportunity, in principle, to combine with other defects and designs for effective optimization of thermal rectification. In this work, we investigate the thermal rectification behavior in periodic atomistic models of polycrystalline graphene whose grain arrangements were generated semi-stochastically to have different gradient grain-density distributions along the in-plane heat flow direction. We employ the centroidal Voronoi tessellation technique to generate realistic grain boundary structures for graphene, and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations method is used to calculate the thermal conductivities and rectification values. Additionally, detailed phonon characteristics and propagating phonon spatial energy densities are analyzed based on the fluctuation-dissipation theory to elucidate the competitive interplay between two underlying mechanisms, namely, (1) propagating phonon coupling and (2) temperature-dependence of thermal conductivity that determine the degree of asymmetric heat flow in graded polycrystalline graphene., Comment: This is an early draft. In a world driven by data, cities are increasingly interested in deploying networks of smart city devices for urban and environmental monitoring. To be successful, these networks must be reliable, scalable, real-time, low-cost, and easy to install and maintain -- criteria that are all significantly affected by the design choices around connectivity and power. LTE networks and solar energy can seemingly both satisfy the necessary criteria and are often used in real-world sensor network deployments. However, there have not been extensive real-world studies to examine how well such networks perform and the challenges they encounter in urban settings over long periods. In this work, we analyze the performance of a stationary 118-node LTE-connected, solar-powered sensor network over one year in Chicago. Results show the promise of LTE networks and solar panels for city-wide IoT deployments, but also reveal areas for improvement. Notably, we find 11 sites with inadequate RSS to support sensing nodes and over 33,000 hours of data loss due to solar energy availability issues between October and March. Furthermore, we discover that the neighborhoods most affected by connectivity and charging issues are socioeconomically disadvantaged areas with a majority Black and Latine residents. This work presents observations from a networking and powering perspective of the urban sensor network to help drive reliable, scalable future smart city deployments. The work also analyzes the impact of land use, adaptive energy harvesting management strategies, and shortcomings of open data, to support the need for increased real-world deployments that ensure the design of equitable smart city networks.

Short Message Service (SMS) remains one of the most popular communication channels since its introduction in 2G cellular networks. In this paper, we demonstrate that merely receiving silent SMS messages regularly opens a stealthy side-channel that allows other regular network users to infer the whereabouts of the SMS recipient. The core idea is that receiving an SMS inevitably generates Delivery Reports whose reception bestows a timing attack vector at the sender. We conducted experiments across various countries, operators, and devices to show that an attacker can deduce the location of an SMS recipient by analyzing timing measurements from typical receiver locations. Our results show that, after training an ML model, the SMS sender can accurately determine multiple locations of the recipient. For example, our model achieves up to 96% accuracy for locations across different countries, and 86% for two locations within Belgium. Due to the way cellular networks are designed, it is difficult to prevent Delivery Reports from being returned to the originator making it challenging to thwart this covert attack without making fundamental changes to the network architecture.

Computer Architecture, broadly, involves optimizing hardware and software for current and future processing systems. Although there are several other top venues to publish Computer Architecture research, including ASPLOS, HPCA, and MICRO, ISCA (the International Symposium on Computer Architecture) is one of the oldest, longest running, and most prestigious venues for publishing Computer Architecture research. Since 1973, except for 1975, ISCA has been organized annually. Accordingly, this year will be the 50th year of ISCA. Thus, we set out to analyze the past 50 years of ISCA to understand who and what has been driving and innovating computing systems thus far. Companies are using machine learning to solve real-world problems and are developing hundreds to thousands of features in the process. They are building feature engineering pipelines as part of MLOps life cycle to transform data from various data sources and materialize the same for future consumption. Without feature stores, different teams across various business groups would maintain the above process independently, which can lead to conflicting and duplicated features in the system. As semiconductor power density is no longer constant with the technology process scaling down, modern CPUs are integrating capable data accelerators on chip, aiming to improve performance and efficiency for a wide range of applications and usages. One such accelerator is the Intel Data Streaming Accelerator (DSA) introduced in Intel 4th Generation Xeon Scalable CPUs (Sapphire Rapids). DSA targets data movement operations in memory that are common sources of overhead in datacenter workloads and infrastructure. In addition, it becomes much more versatile by supporting a wider range of operations on streaming data, such as CRC32 calculations, delta record creation/merging, and data integrity field (DIF) operations. This paper sets out to introduce the latest features supported by DSA, deep-dive into its versatility, and analyze its throughput benefits through a comprehensive evaluation. Along with the analysis of its characteristics, and the rich software ecosystem of DSA, we summarize several insights and guidelines for the programmer to make the most out of DSA, and use an in-depth case study of DPDK Vhost to demonstrate how these guidelines benefit a real application., Comment: This paper has been accepted by ASPLOS'24. With the decline of Moore's law, optimizing program performance has become a major focus of software research. However, high-level optimizations such as API and algorithm changes remain elusive due to the difficulty of understanding the semantics of code. Simultaneously, pretrained large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong capabilities at solving a wide range of programming tasks. To that end, we introduce a framework for adapting LLMs to high-level program optimization. First, we curate a dataset of performance-improving edits made by human programmers of over 77,000 competitive C++ programming submission pairs, accompanied by extensive unit tests. A major challenge is the significant variability of measuring performance on commodity hardware, which can lead to spurious "improvements." To isolate and reliably evaluate the impact of program optimizations, we design an environment based on the gem5 full system simulator, the de facto simulator used in academia and industry. Next, we propose a broad range of adaptation strategies for code optimization; for prompting, these include retrieval-based few-shot prompting and chain-of-thought, and for finetuning, these include performance-conditioned generation and synthetic data augmentation based on self-play. A combination of these techniques achieves a mean speedup of 6.86 with eight generations, higher than average optimizations from individual programmers (3.66). Using our model's fastest generations, we set a new upper limit on the fastest speedup possible for our dataset at 9.64 compared to using the fastest human submissions available (9.56)., Comment: Published as a conference paper at ICLR 2024 (Spotlight). The intermetallic compound Nd$_2$Co$_{0.85}$Si$_{2.88}$ having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single-phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition T$_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at T$_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd-4f and Co-3d moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed studies of temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, field dependence of isothermal magnetization, non-equilibrium dynamical behavior, viz. magnetic relaxation, aging effect, magnetic-memory effect, and temperature dependence of heat capacity, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggest that the ground state is magnetically frustrated spin-glass in nature, having competing magnetic interactions of equivalent energies. DFT results further reveal that the 3d/5d-conduction carriers are blocked in the system and act as a barrier for the 4f-4f RKKY interactions, resulting in spin-frustration. Presence of vacancy defects in the crystal are also conducive to the spin-frustration. This is an unique mechanism of magnetic frustration, not emphasized so far in any of the ternary R$_2$TX$_3$ (R=rare-earth, T=transition elements and X=Si, Ge, In) type compounds. We examine the logarithmic Gromov-Witten cycles of a toric variety relative to its full toric boundary. The cycles are expressed as products of double ramification cycles and natural tautological classes in the logarithmic Chow ring of the moduli space of curves. We introduce a simple new technique that relates the Gromov-Witten cycles of rigid and rubber geometries; the technique is based on a study of maps to the logarithmic algebraic torus. By combining this with recent work on logarithmic double ramification cycles, we deduce that all logarithmic Gromov-Witten pushforwards, for maps to a toric variety relative to its full toric boundary, lie in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves. A feature of the approach is that it avoids the as yet undeveloped logarithmic virtual localization formula, instead relying directly on piecewise polynomial functions to capture the structure that would be provided by such a formula. The results give a common generalization of work of Faber-Pandharipande, and more recent work of Holmes-Schwarz and Molcho-Ranganathan. Counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with fixed contact order with the toric boundary and satisfying point conditions can be determined with tropical methods by Mikhalkin. If we require that our curves intersect the zero- and infinity-section only in points of contact order $1$, but allow arbitrary contact order for the zero- and infinity-fiber, the corresponding numbers reveal beautiful structural properties such as piecewise polynomiality, similar to the case of double Hurwitz numbers counting covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with special ramification profiles over zero and infinity by Ardila and Brugall\'e. This result was obtained using the floor diagram method to count tropical curves. Here, we expand the tropical tools to determine counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. We provide a computational tool (building on Polymake by Gawrilow and Joswig) that determines such numbers of tropical curves for any genus and any contact orders via a straightforward generalization of Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm. The tool can also be used for other toric surfaces. To enable efficient computations also by hand, we introduce a new counting tool (for the case of rational curves with transverse contacts with the infinity section) which can be seen as a combination of the floor diagram and the lattice path approach: subfloor diagrams. We use both our computational tool and the subfloor diagrams for experiments revealing structural properties of these counts. We obtain first results on the (piecewise) polynomial structure of counts of rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with arbitrary contact orders on the zero- and infinity-fiber and restricted choices for the contact orders on the zero- and infinity-section., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures

The Marshall Grazing Incidence X-ray Spectrometer (MaGIXS) sounding rocket experiment launched on July 30, 2021 from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. MaGIXS is a unique solar observing telescope developed to capture X-ray spectral images, in the 6 - 24 Angstrom wavelength range, of coronal active regions. Its novel design takes advantage of recent technological advances related to fabricating and optimizing X-ray optical systems as well as breakthroughs in inversion methodologies necessary to create spectrally pure maps from overlapping spectral images. MaGIXS is the first instrument of its kind to provide spatially resolved soft X-ray spectra across a wide field of view. The plasma diagnostics available in this spectral regime make this instrument a powerful tool for probing solar coronal heating. We investigate how a shepherd should move to effectively herd a flock towards a target. Using an agent-based (ABM) and a coarse-grained (ODE) model for the flock, we pose and solve for the optimal strategy of a shepherd that must keep the flock cohesive and coerce it towards a target. Three distinct strategies emerge naturally as a function of the scaled herd size {and} the scaled shepherd speed: (i) mustering, where the shepherd circles the herd to ensure compactness, (ii) droving, where the shepherd chases the herd in a desired direction while sweeping back and forth, and (iii) driving, where the flock surrounds a shepherd that drives it from within. A minimal dynamical model for the size, shape, and position of the herd captures the effective behavior of the ABM and further allows us to characterize the different herding strategies in terms of the behavior of the shepherd that librates (mustering), oscillates (droving), or moves steadily (driving)., Comment: Now includes extended work on the effect of inertia on the system along with path-following dynamics

Zero-click attacks require no user interaction and typically exploit zero-day (i.e., unpatched) vulnerabilities in instant chat applications (such as WhatsApp and iMessage) to gain root access to the victim's smartphone and exfiltrate sensitive data. In this paper, we report our experiences in attempting to secure smartphones against zero-click attacks. We approached the problem by first enumerating several properties we believed were necessary to prevent zero-click attacks against smartphones. Then, we created a security design that satisfies all the identified properties, and attempted to build it using off-the-shelf components. Our key idea was to shift the attack surface from the user's smartphone to a sandboxed virtual smartphone ecosystem where each chat application runs in isolation. Our performance and usability evaluations of the system we built highlighted several shortcomings and the fundamental challenges in securing modern smartphones against zero-click attacks. In this experience report, we discuss the lessons we learned, and share insights on the missing components necessary to achieve foolproof security against zero-click attacks for modern mobile devices.

Atmospheric retrieval studies are essential to determine the science requirements for future generation missions, such as the Large Interferometer for Exoplanets (LIFE). The use of heterogeneous absorption cross-sections might be the cause of systematic effects in retrievals, which could bias a correct characterization of the atmosphere. In this contribution we quantified the impact of differences in line list provenance, broadening coefficients, and line wing cut-offs in the retrieval of an Earth twin exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star at 10 pc from the observer, as it would be observed with LIFE. We ran four different retrievals on the same input spectrum, by varying the opacity tables that the Bayesian retrieval framework was allowed to use. We found that the systematics introduced by the opacity tables could bias the correct estimation of the atmospheric pressure at the surface level, as well as an accurate retrieval of the abundance of some species in the atmosphere (such as CO$_2$ and N$_2$O). We argue that differences in the line wing cut-off might be the major source of errors. We highlight the need for more laboratory and modeling efforts, as well as inter-model comparisons of the main radiative transfer models and Bayesian retrieval frameworks.
