53. Effects of Sodium Silicate Alkali Sludge on the Rheological and Mechanical Properties of an Alkali-Activated Slag System.

Abstract

The application of alkali sludge (derived from sodium silicate production) as a supplementary material for the cementitious system of alkali-activated slag was investigated through tests of mechanical strength, rheology, heat of hydration, and microscopic analysis. The enhanced alkali sludge dosage and alkali equivalent content increased the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the alkali-activated slag while decreasing the fluidity due to the better water absorption of the alkali sludge, which increased the flocculation of the particles. The compressive strength reached the maximum, with 30% alkali sludge and 7% alkali equivalent content. The addition of the alkali sludge postponed the formation of the hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H) gel and, therefore, delayed the peak heat of hydration, but ultimately increased the total hydration heat release. The major hydration product of calcium silicate hydrate was found in the alkali-activated slag with a 10–30% blend of alkali sludge. This work provides a reference for the utilization of alkaline solid waste from the chemical industry as an alkali activator in cementitious construction materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the longitudinal links between interpersonal competences and loneliness in Chinese college students. Participants were N = 623 undergraduate students (Mage = 20.34 years, SDage = 1.28 years; 42.5% males) from Shanghai, P.R. China, which were followed over two years, with half a year apart. The Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire (ICQ) and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale were used to measure interpersonal competences and loneliness at each time point. Results indicated that as compared with the unidirectional model, the bidirectional model represented the best fit for the data. Within this model, after controlling for the stability of the variables, interpersonal competences directly contributed to later decreases in loneliness and loneliness directly led to decreases in interpersonal competences from Time 1 to Time 3, but not from Time 3 to Time 4. There is a bidirectional relationship between college students’ interpersonal competences and loneliness. Higher interpersonal competences can mitigate later loneliness, and higher loneliness can also weaken later interpersonal competences.

Abstract

Aims Chemoattractants and their cognate receptors are essential for leucocyte recruitment during atherogenesis, and atherosclerotic plaques preferentially occur at predilection sites of the arterial wall with disturbed flow (d-flow). In profiling the endothelial expression of atypical chemoattractant receptors (ACKRs), we found that Ackr5 (CCRL2) was up-regulated in an endothelial subpopulation by atherosclerotic stimulation. We therefore investigated the role of CCRL2 and its ligand chemerin in atherosclerosis and the underlying mechanism. Methods and results By analysing scRNA-seq data of the left carotid artery under d-flow and scRNA-seq datasets GSE131776 of ApoE−/− mice from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, we found that CCRL2 was up-regulated in one subpopulation of endothelial cells in response to d-flow stimulation and atherosclerosis. Using CCRL2−/−ApoE−/− mice, we showed that CCRL2 deficiency protected against plaque formation primarily in the d-flow areas of the aortic arch in ApoE−/− mice fed high-fat diet. Disturbed flow induced the expression of vascular endothelial CCRL2, recruiting chemerin, which caused leucocyte adhesion to the endothelium. Surprisingly, instead of binding to monocytic CMKLR1, chemerin was found to activate β2 integrin, enhancing ERK1/2 phosphorylation and monocyte adhesion. Moreover, chemerin was found to have protein disulfide isomerase-like enzymatic activity, which was responsible for the interaction of chemerin with β2 integrin, as identified by a Di-E-GSSG assay and a proximity ligation assay. For clinical relevance, relatively high serum levels of chemerin were found in patients with acute atherothrombotic stroke compared to healthy individuals. Conclusions Our findings indicate that d-flow-induced CCRL2 promotes atherosclerotic plaque formation via a novel CCRL2-chemerin-β2 integrin axis, providing potential targets for the prevention or therapeutic intervention of atherosclerosis. Abstract

Background: The serum orexin A level was significantly lower among patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and negatively related to the volume of the infarction, but the relationship between serum orexin A and prognosis of AIS was still unclear. We aimed to clarify the association between serum orexin A and the short‐term neurological improvement in patients with mild to moderate AIS. Methods: We consecutively enrolled patients with first ever mild to moderate AIS admitted to hospital within 48 h from symptom onset in this prospective observational study. The serum orexin A concentrations were determined on the second morning since the admission. The short‐term neurological improvement was defined as more than 1 point decrease in the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale score within 7 days after admission. Results: We detected increased serum orexin A level in mild to moderate AIS patients with early onset of stroke‐related insomnia (33.44 vs 18.66 pg/ml, p =.004) as well as in patients with short‐term neurological improvement compared to those without improvement (31.78 vs 16.24 pg/ml, p =.038). The serum orexin A level was positively associated with the short‐term neurological improvement after adjusting for sleep condition and other related variables. Conclusion: Serum orexin A might be a useful biomarker for the assessment of early prognosis in patients with mild to moderate AIS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Explosion tests were performed underwater to study the blast resistance of water-backed sandwich panels. Effects on the structural response of face-sheet and core configurations, including face-sheet thickness, cell wall thickness of the honeycomb, core thickness and charge mass, were investigated by a large number of experiments. Quantitative results were obtained in the tests with corresponding sensors and further processing. Further results characterized the permanent deformation of sandwich panels. A failure mode map was adopted to identify the effect of design parameters on the structural failure mechanism at this blast magnitude. Finally, a comparison between sandwich panels and monolithic plates was performed. The comparative study provided further experimental evidence for the benefits of sandwich in water-backed configuration. Present study led to the apprehension of blast resistance of water-backed sandwich structure to underwater blast load, thereby developed useful guidelines for the design of blast-resistant structural systems.

Abstract

Damage severity of sandwich panels to underwater explosion load depend not only on the shock factors, but also on the fluid behind the structure. Underwater explosion tests were performed on water-backed sandwich panels to examine the deformation and failure of such composite structure. The dynamic blast response of water-backed sandwich panel was investigated using the LS-DYNA software. An analytical three-stage model was developed for the deformation history of water-backed sandwich panel subjected to shock loading in water. Blast resistance of water-backed sandwich panel was compared with monolithic plate of equivalent areal mass and air-backed sandwich panel with the same configurations. Water-backed sandwich panel exhibited the best deformation/damage resistant capability. Compared with air-backed sandwich panel, core material exhibited greater volumetric strain when the sandwich structure wetted on both sides. Overpressure in the water behind structure was reduced to about 7% by using sandwich structure over monolithic plate of equivalent thickness. Present study led to the apprehension of dynamic response of water-backed sandwich structure to underwater blast load, thereby developed useful guidelines for the design of blast-resistant structural systems.

Abstract

Background: Dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA) is known to be impaired in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), but whether or not dynamic CA can predict long-term outcomes is unclear. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 103 patients with AIS between September 2017 and April 2019. We measured the middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity and blood pressure within 7 days of AIS onset using a transcranial Doppler and Finometer, respectively. We conducted transfer function analysis to calculate dynamic CA indices (phase and gain), with lower phase and higher gain parameters reflecting less efficient CA. We followed up all patients after 3 and 12 months. Patients with 12-month modified Rankin Scale scores of <2 and ≥2 were defined as having favorable and unfavorable outcomes, respectively. We then analyzed the predictors of unfavorable outcomes after 3 and 12 months using logistic regression. Results: The ipsilesional phase parameter was significantly lower in patients with unfavorable outcomes than in those with favorable outcomes. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the ipsilesional phase parameter and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score were nonmodifiable predictors of short-term and long-term outcomes. Moreover, in receiver operating characteristic analysis, the area under the curve of the ipsilesional phase parameter was 0.646 (95% confidence interval: 0.513-0.779, P =0.044). Notably, the optimal cut-off value was 20.33 degrees (sensitivity: 63%, specificity: 70%). Conclusion: Dynamic CA is an independent predictor of outcomes at 3 and 12 months in patients with AIS. Protein expression was detected by Western blot. Cell proliferation was investigated by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide, cell colony formation and 5-ethynyl-29-deoxyuridine assays. Cell apoptosis was demonstrated using Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidium iodide double staining assay. Cell migration and invasion were detected by transwell assay. The target relationship between miR-331-3p and circ-PI4KA or LASP1 was predicted by starBase v2.0 online database, and identified by a dual-luciferase reporter assay. The effects between SEV treatment and circ-PI4KA knockdown on tumor formation were presented by in vivo tumor formation assay.Results: Circ-PI4KA and LASP1 expressions were dramatically upregulated, while miR-331-3p was downregulated in colon cancer tissues and cells, respectively. SEV exposure significantly decreased the expression of circ-PI4KA and LASP1, but increased miR-331-3p expression. SEV inhibited cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and induced cell apoptosis by regulating circ-PI4KA. Furthermore, circ-PI4KA interacted with miR-331-3p, and miR-331-3p interacted with LASP1.
