Abstract

Starting from the (Polyakov-) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian, (P)NJL, we formulate a transport theory which allows for describing the expansion of a quark-antiquark plasma and the subsequent transition to the hadronic world --without adding any new parameter to the standard (P)NJL approach, whose parameters are fixed to vacuum physics. This transport theory can be used to describe ultrarelativistic heavy-ion reaction data as well as to study the (first-order) phase transition during the expansion of the plasma. (P)NJL predicts such a phase transition for finite chemical potentials. Abstract

We study charm production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions by using the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. The initial charm quarks are produced by the PYTHIA event generator tuned to fit the transverse momentum spectrum and rapidity distribution of charm quarks from Fixed-Order Next-to-Leading Logarithm (FONLL) calculations. The produced charm quarks scatter in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with the off-shell partons whose masses and widths are given by the Dynamical Quasi-Particle Model (DQPM), which reproduces the lattice QCD equation-of-state in thermal equilibrium. The relevant cross sections are calculated in a consistent way by employing the effective propagators and couplings from the DQPM. Close to the critical energy density of the phase transition, the charm quarks are hadronized into $D$ mesons through coalescence and/or fragmentation. The hadronized $D$ mesons then interact with the various hadrons in the hadronic phase with cross sections calculated in an effective lagrangian approach with heavy-quark spin symmetry. The nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $D^0$ mesons from PHSD are compared with the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =200 GeV and to the ALICE data for Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =2.76 TeV. We find that in the PHSD the energy loss of $D$ mesons at high $p_T$ can be dominantly attributed to partonic scattering while the actual shape of $R_{AA}$ versus $p_T$ reflects the heavy-quark hadronization scenario, i.e. coalescence versus fragmentation. Abstract

The interactions of heavy quarks with the partonic environment at finite temperature $T$ and finite quark chemical potential $\mu_q$ are investigated in terms of transport coefficients within the Dynamical Quasi-Particle model (DQPM) designed to reproduce the lattice-QCD results (including the partonic equation of state) in thermodynamic equilibrium. These results are confronted with those of nuclear many-body calculations close to the critical temperature $T_c$. The hadronic and partonic spatial diffusion coefficients join smoothly and show a pronounced minimum around $T_c$, at $\mu_q=0$ as well as at finite $\mu_q$. Close and above $T_c$ its absolute value matches the lQCD calculations for $\mu_q=0$. The smooth transition of the heavy quark transport coefficients from the hadronic to the partonic medium corresponds to a cross over in line with lattice calculations, and differs substantially from perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations which show a large discontinuity at $T_c$. This indicates that in the vicinity of $T_c$ dynamically dressed massive partons and not massless pQCD partons are the effective degrees-of-freedom in the quark-gluon plasma., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We suggest a realization of a bistable non-volatile memory capacitor (memcapacitor). Its design utilizes a strained elastic membrane as a plate of a parallel-plate capacitor. The applied stress generates low and high capacitance configurations of the system. We demonstrate that a voltage pulse of an appropriate amplitude can be used to reliably switch the memcapacitor into the desired capacitance state. Moreover, charged-voltage and capacitance-voltage curves of such a system demonstrate hysteresis and transition into a chaotic regime in a certain range of ac voltage amplitudes and frequencies. Abstract

The Cyanobacteria Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus account for a substantial fraction of marine primary production. Here, we present quantitative niche models for these lineages that assess present and future global abundances and distributions. These niche models are the result of neural network, nonparametric, and parametric analyses, and they rely on >35,000 discrete observations from all major ocean regions. The models assess cell abundance based on temperature and photosynthetically active radiation, but the individual responses to these environmental variables differ for each lineage. The models estimate global biogeographic patterns and seasonal variability of cell abundance, with maxima in the warm oligotrophic gyres of the Indian and the western Pacific Oceans and minima at higher latitudes. The annual mean global abundances of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus are 2.9 ± 0.1 × 1027 and 7.0 ± 0.3 × 1026cells, respectively. Using projections of sea surface temperature as a result of increased concentration of greenhouse gases at the end of the 21st century, our niche models projected increases in cell numbers of 29% and 14% for Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, respectively. The changes are geographically uneven but include an increase in area. Thus, our global niche models suggest that oceanic microbial communities will experience complex changes as a result of projected future climate conditions. Because of the high abundances and contributions to primary production of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, these changes may have large impacts on ocean ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the usefulness of suPAR as a prognostic marker in non-critical COVID-19 patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a literature search in MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science using the following keywords: ("soluble urokinase receptor" OR "urokinase plasminogen activator receptor" OR "suPAR" OR "soluble uPAR" OR "soluble uPA receptor") AND ("COVID-19" OR "SARS-CoV-2"). We included observational studies (descriptive or analytic) that measured plasma suPAR on COVID-19 patients 18 years old or older, with non-critical disease at the beginning of the study. RESULTS: After screening and eligibility assessment, a total of 16 articles were included in the review. Most studies that measured mean differences found that suPAR levels were higher in patients with worse outcomes. The studies that measured diagnostic accuracy concluded that suPAR was highly sensitive and moderately specific to predicting bad outcomes. Studies that performed a survival analysis found that patients with high suPAR levels were more at risk of bad outcomes. Most of the studies included in this review were performed before extensive vaccination and omicron wave. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 patients with moderate initial disease and elevated suPAR levels are more at risk of poor outcomes. Abstract

One of the main advancements in distributed learning may be the idea behind Google’s Federated Learning (FL) algorithm. It trains copies of artificial neural networks (ANN) in a distributed way and recombines the weights and biases obtained in a central server. Each unit maintains the privacy of the information since the training datasets are not shared. This idea perfectly fits a Multi-Agent System, where the units learning and sharing the model are agents. FL is a centralized approach, where a server is in charge of receiving, averaging and distributing back the models to the different units making the learning process. In this work, we propose a truly distributed learning process where all the agents have the same role in the system. We suggest using a consensus-based learning algorithm that we call Co-Learning. This process uses a consensus process to share the ANN models each agent learns using its private data and calculates the aggregated model. Co-Learning, as a consensus-based algorithm, calculates the average of the ANN models shared by the agents with their local neighbors. This iterative process converges to the averaged ANN model as a central server does. Apart from the definition of the Co-Learning algorithm, the paper presents its integration in SPADE agents, along with a framework called FIVE allowing to develop Intelligent Virtual Environments for SPADE agents. This framework has been used to test the execution of SPADE agents using Co-Learning algorithm in a simulation of an orange orchard field.
