Abstract

Tissue polarimetry could be identified as a complementary optical and non-invasive technique to assist the gold standard histopathology analysis of tissue. In general, polarimetric diagnostics is based on tracing different polarimetric responses (including light depolarization) in tissue zones with structure altered by the benign and pre/cancerous formations. In this manuscript, both healthy and malignant tissue zones of a thick formalin-fixed colon specimen were used for Mueller matrix measurements. Additionally, two more Mueller matrices from Monte Carlo simulation and tissue mimicking phantom were also evaluated, in order to assess polarimetric char- acterization and modeling of turbid media. Symmetric decomposition algorithm of Mueller matrices developed in house was adopted to extract both polarization and depolarization properties, encoded in the Mueller matrix elements. The decomposition products allowed to reveal important information about the internal tissue struc- ture and morphology. The depolarization and polarization parameters were found to follow the particular trends that depend on a choice of parametric space.

76. Interactive Training Platform for Teaching Pattern Recognition.

Abstract

The overall goal of this project was to engage 90 health profession students in an interactive virtual training with task-based assessments using Goal Recognition Design. The students worked together to interactively learn and engage in pattern recognition for disease diagnosis and management. The session helped the participants to improve their approach collaboratively to symptom recognition. The students accessed brief instruction material before switching to the training module in a headset-free virtual environment. The students entered the virtual environment as avatars without the need to download any software or apps. The participants were broken down into groups composed of students from five health professions; they worked together as avatars in an attempt to solve the cases. They were then assessed using a 5-question quiz and a structured interactive group discussion. 82% (N= 74) of the students generated correct responses identifying the conditions. Based on observer reports, the majority of the participants dialogued with each other to solve the cases. The results indicate that non-rigid and immersive platforms have the ability to reinforce relationship building strategies for health profession student collaboration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The functioning of the U.S. social safety net as a support for low-income families depends on various means-tested programs and a system of both public agencies and nonprofit organizations. Using in-depth interviews (n = 5) and a survey of nonprofit employees (n = 73), we seek to understand the role of nonprofits in promoting equitable access to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Our findings reveal that public assistance programs are a necessary support for families, but that access is not always easy or equitable, and nonprofits form a protective layer of support providing resources and guidance for those most in need. Abstract

We present a method for calibrating a polarization state analyzer that uses a set of well-characterized reference polarization states and makes no assumptions about the optics contained in the polarimeter other than their linearity. The method requires that a matrix be constructed that contains the data acquired for each of the reference polarization states and that this matrix be pseudoinverted. Since this matrix is usually singular, we improve the method by performing the pseudoinversion by singular value decomposition, keeping only the four largest singular values. We demonstrate the calibration technique using an imaging polarimeter based upon liquid crystal variable retarders and with light emitting diode (LED) illumination centered at 472 nm, 525 nm, and 630 nm. We generate the reference polarization states by using an unpolarized source, a single polarizer, and a Fresnel rhomb. This method is particularly useful when calibrations are performed on field-grade instruments at a centrally maintained facility and when a traceability chain needs to be maintained.
