Abstract: Crop nitrogen (N) uptake depends on the root absorption area and the soil N availability which are closely related to the soil water status. With the increasing water shortages in the North China Plain, supplemental irrigation (SI) to winter wheat is a promising technique. To clarify the relationships between water and nitrogen use, four SI regimes in Tritcum aestivum L. cv. Jimai 22 were set up: no‐irrigation after emergence (T1), SI at jointing and anthesis (T2), SI at sowing, jointing and anthesis (T3), and SI at pre‐wintering, jointing and anthesis (T4). The results indicate that T2 had higher root length density (RLD) and root surface area density (RAD) in the 0–20, 60–80, and 80–100 cm soil layers, as well as higher post‐anthesis N uptake from soil by 23–26% in 2012–2013 and 162–177% in 2013–2014, compared to T3 and T4. The grain yield under T2 was lower than T3 but was not significantly different from T4, whereas its water use efficiency (WUE) was higher relative to both T3 and T4. There were no significant differences among T2, T3, and T4 in N use efficiency (NUE). The N uptake after jointing and WUE were positively correlated with the RLD and RAD in the 0–20 cm soil layer. The NUE was positively correlated with the RLD and RAD in the 20–40 cm soil layer. These results indicate that timely SI at jointing and anthesis was dependent on a suitable water supply at sowing, which increased the soil water content in the upper soil layer after jointing and improved the absorption area of the roots in both the deep and surface soil layers; this further improved the post‐anthesis N uptake from the soil and the WUE. This approach can be a valuable way to maintain high grain yields and NUE in winter wheat while using less irrigation and achieving higher WUE in the North China Plain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara is a highly valued medicinal plant that is used to treat or prevent bronchitis, cough, cancer, and obesity. However, there has been no study on the production of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara seedlings in a closed-type plant production system (CPPS). This study was conducted to examine the growth characteristics of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara seedlings as affected by different growing media. The seeds were sown on a 128-cell plug tray filled with urethane sponges (US), LC grow foam (LC), rockwool (RW), or terra-plugs (TP). The seedlings were cultured for a duration of 54 days under temperature 25 ± 1°C, a photoperiod of 12/12 h (light/dark), and light intensity of 180 µmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density provided by RB LEDs (red:blue = 8:2) in a closed-type plant production system (CPPS). The germination rate of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara was significantly highest in the TP. Also, seedling shoot growth indicators of plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, fresh weight (FW), and dry weight (DW) of the shoot, and leaf area were markedly the greatest in the TP and the lowest in the US. The SPAD (soil-plant analysis development) value was higher in the TP and US than in the LC or RW. In addition, the seedling root growth characteristics of total root length, root surface area, root volume, and number of root tips were significantly greatest in the TP. Moreover, the maximum root diameter, FW and DW of roots were the greatest in the TP. In conclusion, the results suggest that TP are viable for the growth development of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara seedlings.

The soybean plant has long been known to have a high phenotypic plasticity, altering shoot morphological traits in response to variations on plant density. However, plant density effects on soybean root growth and distribution in the soil profile are not elucidated. This paper aimed at evaluating the effects of three plant densities on soybean root growth at different soil layers and horizontal positions relative to the crop planting row. The study comprised two field experiments carried out during 2014/2015 growing season in Londrina, PR, Southern Brazil, one with the soybean cultivar BRS 359 RR, and other with the cultivar BMX Potência RR. Both experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design and split-split-plot arrangement, with three replications. In the main plots, three soybean seeding rates (150; 300; and 450 thousand seeds ha-1) were distributed; in the subplots, five soil layers (0-10; 10-20; 20-30; 30-40 and 40-50 cm depth); and, in the sub-subplots, three horizontal sampling positions (row; interrow on the left; and interrow on the right). Higher soybean plant densities led to thinner roots, with greater growth towards the crop interrows and deeper soil layers, but the cultivars can affect this behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The precise level of environmental control in vitro may aid in identifying genetically superior plant germplasm for rooting characteristics (RC) linked to increased foraging for plant nitrogen (N). The objectives of this research were to determine the phenotypic variation in root morphological responses of 49 Solanum chacoense ( chc), 30 Solanum tuberosum Group Phureja - Solanum tuberosum Group Stenotomum ( phu-stn), and three Solanum tuberosum ( tbr) genotypes to 1.0 and 0.5 N rate in vitro for 28 d , and identify genotypes with superior RC. The 0.5 N significantly increased density of root length, surface area, and tips. All RC were significantly greater in chc than in either phu-stn or tbr. Based upon clustering on root length, surface area, and volume, the cluster with the greatest rooting values consisted of eight chc genotypes that may be utilized to initiate a breeding program to improve RC in potato. Objective To study the feasibility of measuring root surface area (RSA) by 3D scanning technique and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction in vitro. Design Twenty extracted teeth (10 single-rooted teeth and 10 multi-rooted teeth) were collected in this study. The RSA of the extracted teeth was measured by the membrane technique, 3D scanning technique, and CBCT reconstruction. A standard part was also designed to check the accuracy of each method. All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software. Results According to the results of one-way ANOVA, there was no significant difference among the values of RSA measured by the three techniques ( p > 0.05). The results of Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test further demonstrated that there was no significant difference among the values of RSA in both single- and multi-rooted teeth measured by the three techniques ( p > 0.05). Conclusions The membrane technique, the 3D scanning technique, and CBCT reconstruction are novel reliable techniques for measuring the RSA in both single- and multi-rooted teeth, which will provide wide clinical applications in the future. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the root surface areas of the maxillary permanent teeth in Thai patients exhibiting anterior normal overbite and in those exhibiting anterior open bite, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: CBCT images of maxillary permanent teeth from 15 patients with anterior normal overbite and 18 patients with anterior open bite were selected. Three-dimensional tooth models were constructed using Mimics Research version 17.0. The cementoenamel junction was marked manually. The root surface area was calculated automatically by 3-Matic Research version 9.0. The root surface areas of each tooth type from both types of bite were compared using the independent t-test (P<.05). The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess intraobserver reliability. Results: The mean root surface areas of the maxillary central and lateral incisors in individuals with anterior open bite were significantly less than those in those with normal bite. The mean root surface area of the maxillary second premolar in individuals with anterior open bite was significantly greater than in those with normal bite. Conclusion: Anterior open-bite malocclusion might affect the root surface area, so orthodontic force magnitudes should be carefully determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under field conditions, this study investigated the influence of the irrigation amount on olive root morphology and spatial distribution. Soil samples were taken with an auger at distances of 30, 60, and 90 cm from the tree trunks in four directions. The roots were analyzed using an Epson Twain Pro root scanning system. The results indicated that under different irrigation treatments, the indicators of root morphology of different varieties showed different responses to the irrigation amount. The root length density (RLD), root surface area (RSA), and root volume (RV) of Arbosana first increased with increasing irrigation amount but then decreased; however, those of Arbequina monotonically increased with increasing irrigation amount. The root average diameter of the two varieties was inversely proportional to the irrigation amount. In the vertical dimension, the RLD and RSA of each treatment decreased with increasing soil depth and were mainly distributed in the surface soil (0-20 cm in depth). The RLD and RSA in the vertical direction (VD) of the drip irrigation belt were higher than those of the belt in the parallel direction (PD), and the range was 12% to 86%. Compared with the roots of the 0- to 20-cm soil layer, the roots of the 20- to 40-cm and 40- to 60-cm soil layers were more influenced by the irrigation amount. Horizontally, the RLD and RSA decreased with increasing radial distance. The 30-cm radial area contained most roots, the proportion of roots in this region increased with increasing irrigation capacity. The influence of irrigation quantity in the PD of the drip irrigation belt was greater than that in the VD. The results suggest that irrigation does not change the root spatial distribution pattern but does promote root growth. The two varieties had different responses to irrigation. In terms of soil moisture levels after irrigation, 75% of field capacity is appropriate for 'Arbosana', whereas 100% is advisable for 'Arbequina'. To improve water use efficiency, moisture should be irrigated within the 30-cm radial distance from the trunk, and irrigation depth is not easy to more than 20 cm. Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between the remaining area of periodontal attachment and the attachment levels for each type of permanent teeth in a Chinese population by using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans. Design A total of 440 extracted permanent teeth (including each tooth type except for the third molars) were collected from a Chinese population and scanned using a micro-CT. The CT data were input into Mimics 15.01 to generate 3D tooth models. To simulate various attachment levels, the roots were virtually cut at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm from the cemonto-enamel junction (CEJ). The net and percent remaining root surface area (RSA) were measured and calculated, and the data corresponding to attachment level were fitted to a linear function. Results A Linear function can perfectly fit in relating the simulated attachment level to the net and percent remaining RSA ( R 2 > 0.99, and p < 0.001 for each tooth type). For net remaining RSA, the slope of the linear function was steepest for maxillary first molars ( b 1 = −39.32) and least steep for mandibular central incisor ( b 1 = −13.08); whereas for the percentage of remaining RSA, the slopes ( b 1 ) were relatively within a narrow range, from −7.40 (maxillary canine) to −9.64 (maxillary first molars). Conclusion Micro-CT offers simple and precise technique for quantitative analysis of the RSA. The total amount and vertical distribution of the RSA varied by tooth type. The soilborne pathogen Verticillium dahliae invades its host via the root, and spreads systemically throughout the plant. Although a functional root system of appropriate size is essential for water and nutrient uptake, to date, effects of pathogens on root morphology have not been frequently investigated. Therefore, this study aims to improve knowledge of how V. dahliae infection impairs root morphological characteristics of tomato, considering plant growth and physiological responses, particularly those involved in defence in roots and leaves over a growing period of up to 28 days postinoculation. Verticillium dahliae infection suppressed the growth of both shoot and root. Diseased plants developed a smaller leaf area, and exhibited a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance. An early response to pathogen invasion in the host root was the up-regulation of several defence-related genes, such as proteinase inhibitor II (Pin2), β-1,3-glucanase A (GluA) and two pathogenesis-related genes (PR-1a, PR-1b). However, this response did not prevent colonization of the roots by the pathogen. Although a high variability in pathogen density was found within the root system, a significant increase of both the specific root length and surface area was observed in response to pathogen invasion; these traits correlated with water use efficiency. Morphological changes of the root may represent an adaptive response evolved to sustain the supply of both water and nutrients in the presence of the pathogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exogenously applied auxin over the rootstock cuttings on root morphology parameters and stand establishment rate of salt-stressed cutting grafted cucumber seedlings. For that purpose, before grafting, the cut ends of the rootstocks were soaked for few seconds into auxin solution (indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA))at different concentrations and afterwards were grafted by the root pruned splice grafting (RPSG) method. Ten days after grafting, the grafted seedlings were transplanted into individual pots where two different levels of salt-stress (0 and 50 mM) were established. Root morphology parameters, as well as dry matter of the root system and the whole plants were successively analysed to randomly selected plants. Exogenous auxins improved root morphology parameters and restored root growth under salinity conditions. The best results were obtained through the application of IBA, which promoted a better rootstock - scion relationship, presumably due to faster development of phloem and xylem tubes, and the promotion of a vigorous root system which increases plant's absorbing capabilities for water and nutrients under adverse soil conditions. Chilling is a major constraint in rice production in cool climates. In rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants, both the air temperature and the water (soil) temperature affect various growth processes independently, and low root zone temperature (thus, root temperature) can inhibit rice growth and yield. In this study, we investigated the effect of low root temperature on rice growth in relation to dry matter production and root water uptake. Plants were grown in hydroponic solutions at two temperatures, one equivalent to air temperature and the other 14ºC for 15 d starting 11 d after germination. Low temperature of the solution (low root temperature) inhibited dry matter production of rice plants by decreasing leaf area rather than photosynthetic rate. The response of leaf area was affected by changes in plant water status, that is relative water content (RWC) of stem was decreased by low root temperature resulting in reduced leaf area. The decrease in RWC caused by low root temperature was related to that in root hydraulic conductance (Kr). The responses of transpiration (E) and Kr to the low root temperature depended more on root surface area than on changes in hydraulic conductance per unit root surface area (Lpr). These results suggest that dry matter production under the low root temperature condition is controlled mainly by quantitative growth parameters such as leaf area and root surface area.

Conical crown-retained dentures (CCRD) show a higher survival rate and greater patient satisfaction than transitional removable partial dentures during long-term follow-up. However, unsustainable denture retention force on supporting abutments after initial delivery and loss retention are frequently seen in long-term follow-up of clinical cases. The main causes are insufficient information concerning denture retention designs and the retention-tolerance of the supporting abutments. Monitoring by dental technicians of the quality of dental prostheses is critical. This case report describes an optimal method for CCRD construction that determines and distributes an optimal denture retention force on the supporting abutments to allow the patient to easily remove the denture while ensuring that the CCRD remains in place during physiologic activities. Oral rehabilitation with CCRD should consider the condition of the abutment periodontal support, the interarch occlusal relationship, supplemental fatigue of the terminal abutment, and patient's estimated bite force. The effects of friction on the abutment's inner crown were based on an optimal a angle. The dental laboratory used these measurements to fabricate a CCRD using a Koni-Meter to adjust the retention of the inner crown. This method protects the abutments and reduces the wear between the inner and outer crowns. The CCRD achieved good esthetic results and physiologic functions. Periodic long-term follow-up of the patient and CCRD after initial placement is recommended.

In the field, plants show better root growth in drying soil than in wet soil. However, the root growth enhancement has not been demonstrated clearly in the laboratory. In this study, the root growth response of wheat seedlings to moderate soil water deficits was characterized quantitatively in an environment-controlled chamber. Germinated seeds of wheat were grown for 15 days in the soil with a water potential ranging from field capacity (FC) to approximately –0.08 MPa. Theleaf area decreased with reduction in soil water potential. By contrast, the root surface area increased upon reduction ofthe soil water potential to –0.04 MPa while it decreased significantly in soil with a water potential of –0.08 MPa. The increase in surface area was obvious in the roots with a diameter of 0.2 to 0.4 mm and larger than 0.7 mm. Root weight increased with the reduction of soil water potential to –0.04 MPa. While specific root length decreased significantly with the reduction of water potential to –0.06 MPa, the specific root surface area did not. Assimilatestransported from shoot might be used in roots to increae the surface area mainly by increasing the diameter rather than the length in response to a moderate soil water deficit in wheat seedlings. This might result from the drought tolerance mechanism of osmotic adjustment in roots.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a major constraint to rice production and Zn is also often deficient in humans with rice-based diets. Efforts to breed more Zn-efficient rice are constrained by poor understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance to deficiency. Here we assess the contributions of root growth and root Zn uptake efficiency, and we seek to explain the results in terms of specific mechanisms. We made a field experiment in a highly Zn-deficient rice soil in the Philippines with deficiency-tolerant and -sensitive genotypes, and measured growth, Zn uptake and root development. We also measured the effect of planting density. Tolerant genotypes produced more crown roots per plant and had greater uptake rates per unit root surface area; the latter was at least as important as root number to overall tolerance. Tolerant and sensitive genotypes took up more Zn per plant at greater planting densities. The greater uptake per unit root surface area, and the planting density effect can only be explained by root-induced changes in the rhizosphere, either solubilizing Zn or neutralizing a toxin that impedes Zn uptake (possibly HCO3- or Fe2+), or both. Traits for these and crown root number are potential breeding targets.

Manually measuring tree root characteristics can be inefficient and limiting. To test the application of a new digital technology in tree root architecture research, root systems from 29 green ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica 'Patmore') trees were unearthed, cleaned, and photographed to create 3D models using structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry. Three root segments from each root system were selected, marked, and removed after being photographed. The volumes of these segments (derived from the 3D models) were compared against volumes measured using water displacement. In addition to the root segments, model and water displacement volumes were compared for three complete root systems. Regression analysis showed a strong linear relation between the two volumes measurements (adjusted R 2 = 0.97 for the root segment data). The RMSE for the root segment volume estimates was 40.37 cm 3 (12.3%), with a bias of 17.2 cm 3 (5.3%). This error rate was similar to previous published work and suggests the technology used may allow researchers to improve efficiency in data capture, add new measurements (i.e., surface area) to their modeling efforts, and digitally preserve tree root systems for future study. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of salinity stress on root growth at the phytomer level in wheat to provide novel site-specific understanding of salinity damage in roots. Seedlings of 13 wheat varieties were grown hydroponically. Plants were exposed to three concentrations of NaCl, 0 (control), 50 and 100 mM, from 47 days after sowing. In a destructive harvest 12 days later we determined the number of live leaves, adventitious roots, seminal roots and newly formed roots at the youngest phytomer; length and diameter of main axes; and length and diameter of root hairs and their number per millimetre of root axis. Elongation rate of main axes and root hair density were then derived. Root surface area at each root-bearing phytomer (Pr) was mechanistically modelled. New root formation was increased by salt exposure, while number of live leaves per plant decreased. The greatest salinity effect on root axis elongation was observed at the youngest roots at Pr1 and Pr2. Both the 50 mM and the 100 mM levels of salinity reduced root hair length by approximately 25% and root hair density by 40% compared with the control whereas root hairs alone contributed around 93% of the estimated total root surface area of an individual tiller. Decrease in main axis length of new roots, root hair density and root hair length combined to reduce estimated root surface area by 36-66% at the higher NaCl concentration. The varietal response towards the three salinity levels was found to be trait-specific. The data highlight reduction in root surface area as a major but previously largely unrecognized component of salinity damage. Salinity resistance is trait-specific. Selection for retention of root surface area at a specific phytomer position following salt exposure might be useful in development of salinity-tolerant crop varieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives This study investigated the influence of root variations on the root surface area (RSA) by using micro-CT scans. Design A total of 228 extracted permanent teeth (2-rooted and single-rooted maxillary first premolars, mandibular first premolars with non-Tomes’ and Tomes’ roots, 2-rooted and 3-rooted mandibular first molars, and 2-rooted and C-shaped mandibular second molars) were collected in a Chinese population and scanned using a micro-CT. In Mimics 15.01, 3D tooth models were generated, and the net and percent remaining RSA at various simulated attachment levels were measured. The data corresponding to attachment level were fitted to a linear function. Results The mean total RSA for different root forms decreased in the following order: 3-rooted > 2-rooted > C-shaped > single-rooted. However, the differences were statistically significant ( p < 0.01) only for 2-rooted vs. single-rooted maxillary first premolars, and 2-rooted vs. C-shaped mandibular second molars. Linear functions can perfectly fit in relating the attachment level to the net and percent remaining RSA. Conclusion Micro-CT combined with Mimics software offers simple and precise technique for quantitative analysis of the RSA. In rice, genotypic differences in phosphorus (P) uptake from P-deficient soils are generally proportional to differences in root biomass or surface area (RSA). It is not known to what extent genotypic variation for root efficiency (RE) exists or contributes to P uptake. We evaluated 196 rice accessions under P deficiency and detected wide variation for root biomass which was significantly associated with plant performance. However, at a given root size, up to 3-fold variation in total biomass existed, indicating that genotypes differed in how efficiently their root system acquired P to support overall plant growth. This was subsequently confirmed, identifying a traditional genotype, DJ123, with 2.5-fold higher RE (32.5 μg P cm-2 RSA) compared with the popular modern cultivar IR64. A P depletion experiment indicated that RE could not be explained by P uptake kinetics since even IR64 depleted P to <20 nM. A genome-wide association study identified loci associated with RE, and in most cases the more common marker type improved RE. This may indicate that modern rice cultivars lost the ability for efficient P uptake, possibly because they were selected under highly fertile conditions. One association detected on chromosome 11 that was present in a small group of seven accessions (including DJ123) improved RE above the level already present in many traditional rice accessions. This subspecies is known to harbor genes enhancing stress tolerance, and DJ123 may thus serve as a donor of RE traits and genes that modern cultivars seem to have lost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dry matter production of crops is determined by how much light they intercept and how efficiently they use it for carbon fixation; i.e., photosynthesis. The high-yielding rice cultivar, Akenohoshi, maintains a high photosynthetic rate in the middle of the day owing to its high hydraulic conductance in comparison with the elite commercial rice cultivar, Koshihikari. We developed 94 recombinant inbred lines derived from Akenohoshi and Koshihikari and measured their exudation rate to calculate hydraulic conductance to osmotic water transport in a paddy field. A quantitative trait locus (QTL) for exudation rate was detected on the long arm of chromosome 2 at the heading and ripening stages. We developed chromosome segment substitution lines which carried Akenohoshi segments in the Koshihikari genetic background, and measured hydraulic conductance to both osmotic and passive water transport. The QTL was confirmed to be located within a region of about 4.2 Mbp on the distal end of long arm of chromosome 2. The Akenohoshi allele increased root surface area and hydraulic conductance, but didn't increase hydraulic conductivity of a plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fourteen Brassica species consisting of seven leafy vegetables and seven root vegetables were examined for 137 Cs uptake differences in relation to their fine-root morphological characters. A pot experiment was conducted from November 2014 to February 2015 in a Phytroton using a contaminated soil of Fukushima prefecture. Leafy vegetables showed bigger root diameters, larger root surface area and larger root volume. Consequently, leafy vegetables had higher 137 Cs uptake compared to root vegetables. Among the three fine-root parameters, only root surface area was observed as a significant contributing factor to higher 137 Cs uptake in terms of transfer factor (TF, dry weight basis). Kakina exhibited higher 137 Cs TF value (0.20) followed by Chinese cabbage (0.18) and mizuna (0.17). Tropical forests in Borneo maintain a high level of productivity/biomass even under phosphorus (P)-limited conditions. The P-acquisition properties of roots may be an important factor that contributes to forest productivity, but they have not been well evaluated compared with above-ground properties of plants., In this study, we analysed root acid phosphatase activity and morphological properties (surface area, diameter and tissue density of roots) of dominant tree species in three tropical montane forests on Mt. Kinabalu, Borneo, to investigate changes in root properties along a soil P availability gradient., We found at the community level that root phosphatase activity and specific root surface area (root surface area per gram root biomass) increased, and root diameter decreased, with decreasing soil P availability at the community level, and the relationship was not changed in general even if we focused on a single-tree species distributed across multiple study sites that differ in soil P availability. Root acid phosphatase was significantly positively correlated with specific root surface area, and negatively correlated with root diameter, suggesting that finer roots have higher phosphatase activities., Furthermore, we compared root acid phosphatase activity with leaf P concentration of a given tree species and found a significant negative correlation between them. The significant correlation suggested that root P-acquisition properties could influence leaf P concentration, and/or vice versa. Below-ground properties (i.e. root P-acquisition properties) might be directly/indirectly linked to above-ground properties (i.e. leaf P concentration) of a tree individual., In conclusion, the root physiological and morphological properties change along a gradient of soil P availability in the tropical montane forests. In addition, the changes in the root properties are coordinated with the changes in leaf P concentrations. Understanding on distribution of above-and below-ground biomass and the effects of degradation on root/ shoot ratio and root area is crucial to predict the degraded processes in the alpine meadow. First, In Naqu Ecological and Environmental Observation and Research Station of Kobresia Fence (2009 enclosed) select native vegetationplace randomly selected Kobresia pygmaea, K. humilis, Stipa purpurea, Potentilla bifurca and Carex moorcroftii five species, degradation choice (compared with native vegetation) of Potentilla bifurca and Carex moorcroftii, then drying to constant weight and using a scanner to scan the surface area of roots. Finally, the use of different species and different levels of sampling two-way ANOVA to test the effects of above-and below-ground biomass, according to species and degraded state, the use of two-way ANOVA to test effects on aboveground biomass, and the use of the species, sampling levels and degraded state three-way ANOVA to examine the influence of biomass, root and shoot ratio and root surface area on Potentilla bifurca and Carex moorcroftii. Our results showed that belowground biomass of Kobresia pygmaea, K. humilis and Stipa purpurea mainly concentrated in the 0--10 cm soil layer which was about 70% of total belowground biomass of 0--30 cm, and belowground of 0--30 cm was about 96% of the total above-and below-ground biomass. Belowground biomass of 0--10 cm for Potenttilla bifurca and Carex moorcroftii was about 50% of the total belowground biomass of 0--30 cm. Belowground biomass of 0--30 cm for Potenttilla bifurca and Carex moorcroftii was about 57% and 85% of total above-and below-ground biomass respectively. As main plant species for the degraded alpine meadow, we found that degradation decreased aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, its root/shoot ratio and root surface area for Potenttilla bifurca; and it increased aboveground biomass but reduced root/shoot ratio for C. moorcroftii, whereas there was no significant effect on its belowground biomass and root surface area.
