52. FSIS: a novel fluid–solid interaction solver for fracturing and fragmenting solids

Abstract

Transient dynamics of fracturing media has received significant attention in recent years, and a number of simulation approaches have been developed. One of these is the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). FDEM produces complex fracture and fragmentation patterns in processes such as blast loads, blasting, impact, mining, and oil exploration. To address a wide range of multi-physics problems, numerous approaches have been undertaken to introduce fluid into the FDEM transient dynamics, ranging from application-specific gas models to more advanced hydraulic fracture processes and biomedical applications. None of these have been satisfactory in terms of robustness, accuracy or computational efficiency. In this work, a completely new explicit fluid solver has been tailor-made and fully integrated (as opposed to coupled) into the combined finite-discrete element method. The solver addresses transient pressure wave propagation in fluid, fluid viscosity, equation of state for the fluid, energy transport, momentum transport, and interaction with the fracturing solid domains, which is done through a novel immersed boundary approach. The solver is based on the governing equations being resolved using different control volume schemes, with discretization errors of either third, second, or first order. The solver is fully explicit and conditionally stable with a time step that is synchronized with the FDEM’s time step.

53. Numerical analysis of flyer plate experiments in granite via the combined finite–discrete element method

Abstract

In this study, the combined finite–discrete element method (FDEM), which merges the finite element-based analysis of continua with discrete element-based transient dynamics, contact detection, and contact interaction solutions, is used to simulate the response of a flyer plate impact experiment in a Westerly granite sample that contains a randomized set of cracks. FDEM has demonstrated to be a strongly improved physical model as it can accurately reproduce the velocity interferometer system for any reflector plot and capture the spall region and spall strength obtained from flyer plate experiments in granite. The number and the distributions of preexisting fractures have also been studied to get better understanding of the effect of structural cracks on the mechanical behavior and the failure path of Westerly granite under high strain rate impact. These FDEM capabilities, in the context of rock mechanics, are very important for two main reasons. First, the FDEM can be further applied to many complex large-scale problems such as planetary impact, rock blasting, seismic wave propagation, characterization of material failure around explosive crater formations, and detection of hydrocarbon flow in petroleum industry. Second, it can be used to validate high strain rate impact experiments and essentially, via virtual experimentation, replace these high-cost experiments by very cost- and time-effective simulations.

54. A smooth contact algorithm for the combined finite discrete element method

Abstract

From its inception, the combined finite discrete element method has used a distributed potential contact force algorithm to resolve interaction between finite elements. The contact interaction algorithm relies on evaluation of the contact force potential field. The problem with existing algorithms is that the potential field introduces artificial numerical non-smoothness in the contact force. This work introduces a smooth potential field based on the finite element topology, and a generalized contact interaction law is constructed on top of the smooth potential field. A number of validation cases for the proposed algorithm, considering different shapes of discrete elements, are presented, and detailed aspects of the proposed contact interaction law are tested with numerical examples.

Abstract

Most earthquake ruptures propagate at speeds below the shear wave velocity within the crust, but in some rare cases, ruptures reach supershear speeds. The physics underlying the transition of natural subshear earthquakes to supershear ones is currently not fully understood. Most observational studies of supershear earthquakes have focused on determining which fault segments sustain fully grown supershear ruptures. Experimentally cross-validated numerical models have identified some of the key ingredients required to trigger a transition to supershear speed. However, the conditions for such a transition in nature are still unclear, including the precise location of this transition. In this work, we provide theoretical and numerical insights to identify the precise location of such a transition in nature. We use fracture mechanics arguments with multiple numerical models to identify the signature of supershear transition in coseismic off-fault damage. We then cross-validate this signature with high-resolution observations of fault zone width and early aftershock distributions. We confirm that the location of the transition from subshear to supershear speed is characterized by a decrease in the width of the coseismic off-fault damage zone. We thus help refine the precise location of such a transition for natural supershear earthquakes.

Abstract

Supershear earthquakes are rare but powerful ruptures with devastating consequences. Traditionally, studies of supershear earthquakes have focused on determining which fault segments sustained fully-grown supershear ruptures. But the rarity of such events, combined with the fact that conditions for supershear transition are still debated, complicates this investigation for natural earthquakes. The details of the transition, including its location, are then often overlooked. Here, we propose a unique signature of the precise location of a supershear transition. We combine theoretical fracture mechanics, and numerical modelling of off-fault coseismic damage, with high-resolution field observations of off-fault damage and aftershock distribution, to show that the location of the transition from subshear to supershear speeds can be pinpointed by a localised absence of aftershocks, and a decrease in off-fault damage, due to a transient reduction of the stress intensity at the rupture tip.
