The aim of this study was to determine the content of rutin in Hemidesmus indicus and to optimize the high-performance thin-layer chromatography method. The method was validated in compliance with the International Council for Harmonisation guidelines Q2 (R1) for parameters such as linearity, accuracy, precision, robustness, limit of detection, and limit of quantitation. A Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology has been used to investigate the impact of independent variables on the response. Three independent variables, mobile phase composition (% v/v), mobile phase volume (mL), and duration of saturation (min), were studied. Rutin was verified, and its content was determined using a validated high-performance thin-layer chromatography method with good linearity within the range of 200-1000 ng spot -1 with r 2  = 0.9998 and correlation coefficient with calibration curve equation y = 0.0297x + 0.0001. The average percentage recovery values varied from 99.03 to 101.15 and 98.88 to 100.12%, respectively, for in-house and marketed mother tincture). The peak area determination at three different concentration levels shows low values of percentage relative standard deviation (<2%) for inter-day (0.04-0.06) and intra-day (0.04-0.05) precision of rutin. The average content of rutin in extract and marketed mother tincture was 229 ± 0.57 and 210 ± 0.57 μg g -1 . Fabrication of temperature-influenced nanoparticles over the superficial region of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) stimulates the electrocatalytic activity owing to their morphology, defective sites, and higher active surface area, etc. In this regard, we have fabricated annealed magnesium stannate nanoparticles (Mg 2 SnO 4 NPs) on GCE for nanomolar level detection of hazardous flavoring and pharmaceutical compound Rutin (RT). To analyze the impact of temperature, we have compared annealed Mg 2 SnO 4 NPs with unannealed magnesium stannate hydrate (MgSnO 3 ·3H 2 O) particles. The physicochemical properties of synthesized materials were characterized with different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. From these studies, annealed Mg 2 SnO 4 NPs formed purely without any flith and existence of water molecules as compared to unannealed MgSnO 3 ·3H 2 O. Moreover as fabricated, Mg 2 SnO 4 NPs/GCE outcomes with higher redox behavior compared to other electrodes in presence of RT at optimized working buffer (pH = 7.0). Interestingly, the electrode successfully established a dual wider linear response (0.062-34.8 & 34.8-346.8 µM) with a nanomolar detection limit (1 nM) and higher sensitivity. The practicability analysis of the proposed sensor also affords excellent selectivity, reproducibility, repeatability, reversibility, and storage stability. Based on advantages of capillary electrophoresis (CE), a new solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with CE has been developed for preconcentration, enrichment and determination of anthraquinones and flavonoids (rutin, emodin, quercetin, 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone) in honey. The environmental-friendly chitin activated after an easy processing is selected as the adsorbent to enrich analytes. Then, chitin was filled into the filter as the solid phase. To improve the extraction effect, some key parameters of extraction were optimized. Under the optional extraction conditions, the chitin showed excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity over rutin, emodin, quercetin, and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone, with enrichment factors reaching 5 folds. The CE coupled with fluorescence detection was used for the detection. Results prove the method is simple, fast, and highly sensitive, with the limit of detection (LOD) is 3.00-200.0 ng/mL; the recovery is 90.0-107.0%, and relative standard deviation of (RSD) is 1.8-8.3%., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Sida rhombifolia (Malvaceae) is popularly used as a treatment for several pathological conditions; however, there is a lack of studies that identify its compounds and that evaluate comprehensively the safety of its consumption. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determinate the phytochemical constitution of the crude extract of Sida rhombifolia (CESR), and its safety in models of acute and repeated doses (28 days) toxicity. The tested dose for the model of acute toxicity was 2000 mg/kg doses for the repeated dose model were 150, 300 e 600 mg/kg. Hematological, biochemical, histopathological and oxidative markers were investigated. HPLC-DAD-MS analysis evidenced the presence of caffeic acid, coumarin, and rutin. In the acute toxicity model the only altered parameters were tissue ROS, and AST and BUN in serum. As for the repeated dose experiment both hematological and biochemical markers remained within the values of reference for the species. Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) disease is an extremely ruinous disease in rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). Although various chemicals are available to manage BLB, they are toxic to the environment as well as humans. Hence there is a need to develop new pesticides as alternatives to hazardous chemicals. Therefore, a study was carried out to discover new potent natural pesticides against Xoo from different solvent extracts of Vernonia cinerea. Among all the fractions, the methanolic extract showed the highest inhibition zone. Further, to gain mechanistic insight of inhibitory action, 40 molecules of methanolic extracts were subjected for in silico study against two enzymes D-alanine-D-alanine ligase (Ddl) and Peptide deformylase (PDF). In silico study showed Rutin and Methanone, [1,4-dimethyl-7-(1- methylethyl)-2- azulenyl]phenyl have a good binding affinity with Ddl while Phenol, 2,4-bis(1-phenylethyl)- and 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisooctyl ester showed an excellent binding affinity to PDF. Finally, the system biology approach was applied to understand the agrochemical's effect in the cell system of bacteria against both the enzymes. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the mineral composition of soils and the bioactive compound content present in tomatoes grown in three regions of Mexico: the state of San Luis Potosí and Tultitlán and Cuautitlán Izcalli from the State of México: Total phenolic compounds, lycopene, and rutin were higher in the Tultitlán tomatoes and were associated with the thallium and magnesium content in the soil. Chlorogenic acid and quercetin in the fruit from C.IZC were associated with molybdenum and nickel found in the soil. A principal component analysis showed that cupper, iron, sodium, manganese, and lead in the soil had a relationship with the antioxidant activity (AA), resveratrol, and naringin in the fruit from SLP. Herein, we report the effect of flavonoids from Lycium barbarum leaves (LBLF) on myofibrillar proteins (MP) in minced mutton during chilled storage (4 ± 1 ℃). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that the total flavonoid content in LBLF was 322.0 mg/g, of which the rutin content was 297.6 mg/g. The effect of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% LBLF on the structure and thermodynamic properties of MP in minced mutton was studied systematically. Tyrosine and tryptophan of MP samples treated with LBLF were converted from an exposed state to an embedded state. The interaction between LBLF and MP quenched the internal fluorescence, and improved the thermal stability of MP. The addition of LBLF significantly reduced the carbonyl and sulfhydryl contents of MP (p < 0.05), and decreased the surface hydrophobicity of MP in a dose-dependent manner. Our results indicate that LBLF can combine with free radicals produced by protein oxidation, block the free radical oxidation chain reaction, and inhibit the oxidation of MP. Therefore, LBLF may have great potential as a natural antioxidant in meats and meat products during chilled storage. Bidens bipinnata L. is a folk medicinal plant in China that shows significant antihyperlipidemia effectiveness. However, studies of the underlying mechanism study are lacking. In order to explore the potential action sites and the underlying mechanism of treating hyperlipidemic, this work undertook tissue distribution and molecular docking research on the markers of B. bipinnata L., which were obtained through serum pharmacochemistry and network database retrieval. The results showed that seven compounds (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, rutin, hyperoside, bipinnate polyacetylenicloside, luteolin and quercetin) were screened out as markers. Owing to the diversity of chemical structures, they exhibited an inconsistent trend in tissue distribution. However, all of them had high levels in the liver and no specific distribution in other tissues. More interestingly, seven proteins-HMGCR (1HWK), NR3C1 (4P6W), CYP1A2 (2HI4), RXRA (4PP3), CES1 (1MX1), HSD11B1 (2RBE) and CYP1A1 (4I8V)-showed significant binding affinity with three or more markers, suggesting that they may be the target proteins of B. bipinnata L. A green, novel and efficacious method for the simultaneous extraction and enrichment of rutin and narcissoside from the compound Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall.) Lindl. oral liquid (CAROL) and Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall.) Lindl. was developed. Ionic liquid-surfactant synergic cloud-point extraction (IL-CPE) was used to enrich two analytes, which were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Some parameters affecting IL-CPE were optimized, such as ratio and volume of 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate and Triton X-114, pH of the sample, NaCl concentration, total extraction volume, incubation temperature and time, centrifuge rate and time. The corresponding linearity range for two analytes exhibited good linearity (r 2 ＞0.9997), with the average added recoveries ranging from 92.1% to 98.9%. The limits of detection of rutin and narcissoside were 0.26 and 0.30 ng/mL, respectively. The method was successfully applied for the determination of two flavonoids in the complex-matrix sample, i.e. CAROL and the water extract of A. roxburghii. The mass spectrum data showed that the sample contained rutin and narcissoside. Compared with conventional extraction methods, IL-CPE exhibited higher extraction efficiency and better extraction selectivity. Yanghe decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription and has been used for breast cancer treatment for many years. However, the effective ingredients in the decoction have not been identified. The expression of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 is highly related to breast cancer. Using poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 as a probe, we expressed the haloalkane dehalogenase-tagged protein in BL21(DE3) E. coli, immobilized it on hexachlorocaproic acid-modified macroporous silica gel, and established a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 chromatographic model. The feasibility of the model was verified by testing the retention behaviors of five drugs on the protein column. We applied the model in screening the bioactive components in yanghe decoction. Rutin, liquiritin, and a compound ([M-H] - 681.7) were identified to be the potential bioactive ingredients. We studied the binding property between rutin and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 by injection amount dependent method, competitive studies, and molecular docking. We found that rutin can bind to the protein through the typical inhibitor binding site of the protein. Therefore, the chromatographic model is a useful tool to screen bioactive compounds from traditional Chinese medicine. Objective: ´Three formulas and three medicines,' namely, Jinhua Qinggan Granule, Lianhua Qingwen Capsule, Xuebijing Injection, Qingfei Paidu Decoction, HuaShi BaiDu Formula, and XuanFei BaiDu Granule, were proven to be effective for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment. The present study aimed to identify the active chemical constituents of this traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and investigate their mechanisms through interleukin-6 (IL-6) integrating network pharmacological approaches., Methods: We collected the compounds from all herbal ingredients of the previously mentioned TCM, but those that could down-regulate IL-6 were screened through the network pharmacology approach. Then, we modeled molecular docking to evaluate the binding affinity between compounds and IL-6. Furthermore, we analyzed the biological processes and pathways of compounds. Finally, we screened out the core genes of compounds through the construction of the protein-protein interaction network and the excavation of gene clusters of compounds., Results: The network pharmacology research showed that TCM could decrease IL-6 using several compounds, such as quercetin, ursolic acid, luteolin, and rutin. Molecular docking results showed that the molecular binding affinity with IL-6 of all compounds except γ-aminobutyric acid was < -5.0 kJ/mol, indicating the potential of numerous active compounds in TCM to directly interact with IL-6, leading to an anti-inflammation effect. Finally, Cytoscape 3.7.2 was used to topologize the biological processes and pathways of compounds, revealing potential mechanisms for COVID-19 treatment., Conclusion: These results indicated the positive effect of TCM on the prevention and rehabilitation of COVID-19 in at-risk people. Buckwheat is a gluten-free crop under the family Polygonaceae abundant with beneficial phytochemicals that provide significant health benefits. It is cultivated and adapted in diverse ecological zones all over the world. Recently its popularity is expanding as a nutrient-rich healthy food with low-calories. The bioactive compounds in buckwheat are flavonoids (i.e., rutin, quercetin, orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, and isovitexin), fatty acids, polysaccharides, proteins, and amino acids, iminosugars, dietary fiber, fagopyrins, resistant starch, vitamins, and minerals. Buckwheat possesses high nutritional value due to these bioactive compounds. Additionally, several essential bioactive factors that have long been gaining interest because these compounds are beneficial for healing and preventing several human diseases. Flavonol glucosides was extracted from red onion solid waste (ROSW) and multi-functional properties were determined to develop alternative strategy for therapeutic beneficiation and utilisation as functional food. The major flavonol glucosides extracted from ROSW were confirmed as quercetin-3, 4'-O-diglucoside (QDG), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (isoquercetin), quercetin-4'-O-glucoside (spiraeoside), isorhamnetin- 4'-glucoside (IMG), quercetin glycoside (QG), and quercetin (Q) using a combination of chromatographic, spectroscopic and scientific literature data. The ROSW solvent fractions and extracted flavonol glucosides showed significant antioxidant effect with DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and ORAC radical scavenging assays. The in vitro and in silico study revealed that the QG, QDG, isoquercetin, and spiraeoside from ROSW exhibited potent α-glucosidase, tyrosinase and xanthine oxidase enzyme inhibitory activity. In addition, QG, QDG, isoquercetin, and spiraeoside showed potent anticancer effect on HeLa cancer lines. As the interest in heirloom cultivars of apple trees, their fruit, and processed products is growing worldwide, studies of the qualitative and quantitative composition of biological compounds are important for the evaluation of the quality and nutritional properties of the apples. Studies on the variations in the chemical composition of phenolic compounds characterized by a versatile biological effect are important when researching the genetic heritage of the heirloom cultivars in order to increase the cultivation of such cultivars in orchards. A variation in the qualitative and quantitative composition of phenolic compounds was found in apple samples of cultivars included in the Lithuanian collection of genetic resources. By the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method flavan-3-ols (procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, procyanidin C2, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin), flavonols (rutin, hyperoside, quercitrin, isoquercitrin, reynoutrin and avicularin), chlorogenic acids and phloridzin were identified and quantified in fruit samples of heirloom apple cultivars grown in Lithuania. The highest sum of the identified phenolic compounds (3.82 ± 0.53 mg/g) was found in apple fruit samples of the 'Koštelė' cultivar.

A copper-1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid-based organic framework (Cu-NDCA MOF) with different morphologies was synthesized by solvothermal synthetic route via a simple protonation-deprotonation approach. The synthesized Cu-NDCA MOFs were analyzed by diverse microscopic and spectral techniques. The FE-SEM and TEM image results exhibited the flake-like (FL), partial anisotropic (PAT), and anisotropic (AT)-Cu-NDCA MOFs formation obtained at different pH (3.0, 7.0, and 9.0) of the reaction medium. The AT-Cu-NDCA MOF/GC electrode not only increases the electroactive surface area but also boosts the electron transfer rate reaction compared to other modified electrodes (PAT- and FL-Cu-NDCA MOFs/GCEs). Under the optimized conditions, the modified electrode (AT-Cu-NDCA MOF) exhibited a sharp oxidation peak (+ 0.46 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and higher current response for rutin. The electrode provides a wide linear range from 1 × 10 -9 to 50 × 10 -6  M, a low detection limit of 1.21 × 10 -10  M, LOQ of 0.001 μM, and sensitivity of 0.149 μA μM -1  cm -2 . The AT-Cu-NDCA MOF/GC electrode exhibited good stability (RSD = 3.52 ± 0.02% over 8 days of storage), and excellent reproducibility (RSD = 2.62 ± 0.02% (n = 3)). The modified electrode was applied to the determination of rutin in apple, orange, and lemon samples with good recoveries (99.79-99.91, 99.24-99.69, and 99.53-99.83, respectively). Three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide aerogel (3D rGA) was synthesized by hydrothermal method and cobalt imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) was further grown in situ on the 3D rGA matrix directly. The resultant ZIF-67@3D rGA nanocomposite was checked by different techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The presence of 3D rGA acted as the backbone for the loading of ZIF-67, and the resultant ZIF-67@3D rGA nanocomposite exhibited an interconnected porous structure with large surface area and high conductivity due to synergistic effects, which was applied to the electrode modification and used for rutin detection. The developed method showed excellent performance with a wider linear range (0.05-200.0 μmol/L) and lower detection limit (0.028 ± 0.0016 μmol/L, S/N=3). In tomato production, the accruing green biomass shows promising potential as source of health-promoting compounds, such as rutin and solanesol, that are of high interest due to their medicinal properties. Naturally, they accumulate in plants growing in suboptimal growing conditions, e.g. influenced by biotic and abiotic stressors. With the aim to evaluate the potential use of tomato residues as source, we analyzed both leaf metabolites during a complete cultivation cycle, while applying single and combined stresses practically realized in greenhouse production. In the late season, contents of both metabolites were significantly enhanced by nutrient deficit in combination with 2 °C colder nights for 4 weeks and prolonged for in total 9 weeks. Particularly, higher solanesol contents were achieved by salt stress and elevated temperature after one week, even stronger when combined with drought. At harvest, stressed plants consist of less green biomass reducing the overall economic potential. However, practicable abiotic stresses should be considered as potential tool to induce the accumulation of beneficial compounds. Phenolic compounds that are present in amaranth crops have gained a lot of interest from researchers due to their health benefits potential. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate phenolic compounds present in different plant parts of Amaranthus cruentus using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Moreover, data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance of the statistical analysis software, whereas commercial statistical package version 4.02 was used for principal component analysis. A total of 21 phenolic compounds were detected and eight were not identified. Caffeoylsaccharic acid isomer, coumaoryl saccharic acid, tryptophan, feruloyl-d-saccharic acid isomer a, b, and c, caffeoyl isocitrate, quercetin 3- O -rhamnosyl-rhamnosyl-glucoside, feruloyl isocitrate, hyperoside, kaempferol rutinoside, and alkaloid compounds were mostly detected in tender and mature leaves. Generally, rutin content was higher ( p < 0.05) in most vegetative parts of the amaranth plant, thus, late maturity leaves, tender leaves, and mature leaves, respectively. Lower quantities of rutin were observed in tender grains, flowers, and mature grains. It can be concluded that amaranth contains phenolic compounds, predominantly in the vegetative parts, which makes it to be a promising source of phenolic compounds beneficial to human health.

St. John's wort ( Hypericum perforatum L.) is a medicinal plant that alleviates depression and other disorders due to its abundance of active ingredients. Hyperforin, rutin, and melatonin are the main active, and important, ingredients in St. John's wort that alleviate depression. In order to investigate the optimal conditions for accumulating these active ingredients, design of experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in this study. Two-month-old St John's wort plants were cultivated in growth chambers at varying temperatures, light intensities, and nutrient solution concentrations before analysis by HPLC, for determining differences in hyperforin, rutin, and melatonin content. The results showed that hyperforin and rutin contents were significantly influenced by temperature (18-23 °C) and light intensity (49-147 μmol m -2 s -1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)), whereas Hoagland's nutrient solution concentration (25-75%) had little effect. The accumulation of melatonin might not be influenced by cultivation conditions. Light intensity and temperature are easily controlled environmental factors in artificial cultivation, both of which are related to secondary metabolite production in the plant. Based on RSM, the optimal conditions for the accumulation of hyperforin and rutin were obtained. The maximum content of hyperforin was 5.6 mg/g, obtained at a temperature of 19 °C, a nutrient solution concentration of 45%, and a light intensity of 49 μmol m -2 s -1 PPFD. The maximum content of rutin was 3.8 mg/g obtained at a temperature of 18 °C, a nutrient solution concentration of 50%, and a light intensity of 147 μmol m -2 s -1 PPFD. This evaluation of suitable conditions for the accumulation of bioactive compounds in St. John's wort can be applied to plant factories on a large scale.

Buckwheat sprouts (BS) becomes popular due to its' health-promoting properties as food product. The effects of fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus plantarum on antioxidant and hypolipidemic activities as well as functional composition in common BS cultivated in maifanite mineral water were investigated here. DPPH and ·OH results showed higher antioxidant potential in fermented BS compared to unfermented BS, due to the higher rutin, orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin, and total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The S. cerevisiae-fermented BS also exhibited 113% and 110% higher DPPH and ·OH scavenging activities than the L. plantarum-fermented BS, respectively. In hyperlipidemic mice, blood lipid parameters were improved as dose-dependent manner when supplemented the food with S. cerevisiae-fermented BS. Fermented BS also restored liver antioxidant levels significantly. The fermented BS had greater effect on different parameters than those of unfermented BS. Rosa banksiae Ait. ( R. banksiae ) is a traditional Chinese folk medicine and an ornamental plant. Most previous studies have focused on cultivation and utilization while there are few research papers on the pharmacological activity of R. banksiae . This study aimed to get a better understanding of R. banksiae by extracting polyphenols with fractionated extraction technology. The results showed that ethyl acetate phase (EAP) contained the most polyphenols, while water phase (WP) had the least. HPLC analysis indicated that rutin and luteolin-4'- O -glucoside existed in the EAP and butanol phase (BP), but quercetin was only detected in the EAP. Six phenolic compositions were not detected in WB. The antioxidant and anti-tumor abilities of the EAP and BP were excellent. The results revealed that R. banksiae possessed a great antioxidant capacity and was rich in polyphenols, thus indicating R. banksiae was suitable for being a natural antioxidant and an abundant source of polyphenols.

This work aimed to investigate how the variation of free and insoluble-bound phenolics affected the antioxidant properties of mustard grains from two varieties (black - Brassica nigra and white - Sinapsis alba) during different germination parameters. The germination conditions selected for each mustard variety to improve their antioxidant properties were different, as follows: (a) for white mustard - 72 h of germination at 25 °C in the dark and (b) for black mustard - 48 h of germination at 25 °C alternating dark and light periods. At these conditions, increases of 49, 72, 80, 68, 42, 66 and 45% were detected for total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoids, condensed tannins, FRAP, DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC, respectively, for soluble extracts of white mustard compared to the non-germinated white mustard. The soluble extracts from black mustard, in turn, presented increases of 44, 18, 55, 29, 3, 160 and 42% for TPC, total flavonoids, condensed tannins, FRAP, DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC, respectively, compared to the non-germinated sample. Gallic acid, 3,4-di-hydroxybenzoic acid, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, coumaric acid, and rutin were identified by UPLC-MS/MS and were the main compounds detected in mustard extracts. A microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method was used for the extraction of phenolic compounds from Nerium oleander leaves. The influence of variables such as ethanol concentration, microwave power, irradiation time and liquid/solid ratio on polyphenol extraction was modelled using a second-order regression equation based on response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions for MAE were: extraction solvent 35% ethanol concentration, 500 W microwave power, 60 s irradiation time and a solvent/material ratio of 20 mL g -1 . Under optimal MAE conditions, the recovery of TPC was 25.752 mg GAE per g dw. 19 compounds have been identified by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis; the main compounds identified were chlorogenic acid, rutin and quinic acid esters, such as caffeoylquinic acids and dicaffeoylquinic acids. Additionally, the optimized extract demonstrated potential to inhibit HT29 colorectal cancer cell growth (EC 50 = 2.432 μg mL -1 ) without presenting cytotoxicity in confluent Caco-2 cells, a model of human intestinal epithelium. These results supply new information about the phenolic composition of Nerium oleander leaves and their antiproliferative effect.

Rhaponticum acaule (L.) DC. is a medicinal plant commonly used for the treatment of some illnesses such as gastrointestinal infections. In this work, we report the composition of different parts of this plant on phenolic compounds, their quantification, and antioxidant activity. The obtained results reported that methanolic extracts of the three parts studied revealed high phenolic contents. For flavonoid contents, the highest contents were reported in organic extracts of leaf part. In addition, results obtained from the study of the antioxidant activity showed that methanolic extract of root presented the highest activity, in DPPH • scavenging ability test with an IC 50 of 0.31 ± 0.04 mg/mL and in FRAP test with an EC 50 of 1.06 ± 0.02 mg/mL. The RP-HPLC-PDA analysis revealed the presence of five phenolic acids (sinapic, caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic and syringic acids), one flavanone (naringenin), one flavonol (rutin) and vanillin.

This study assessed the phenolics and their bioaccessibility through an in vitro digestion system coupled to a simulated intestinal barrier in eight edible flowers of distinct colors, namely mini rose, torenia, mini daisy, clitoria, cosmos, cravine, begonia and tagete. The antioxidant activity of the flowers before in vitro digestion, in their derived dialyzed and non-dialyzed fractions was evaluated using distinct approaches. All flowers presented in their composition phenolic acids, stilbenes, flavanol, anthocyanin, flavonol and flavanone, however distinct compounds and contents were found in each flower. The bioaccessibility varied among the phenolics and within the flower source (p < 0.05). Cosmos presented the highest (p < 0.05) content of phenolics and activity in ORAC assay before in vitro digestion and in dialyzed and non-dialyzed fraction; the observed activity was correlated (r = 0.9) to its major compounds, hesperidin and rutin, as well as to caftaric acid and procyanidin B2. Mini rose displayed the highest antioxidant activity in FRAP and DPPH assays before in vitro digestion; its dialyzed and non-dialyzed fraction showed the highest activity in FRAP, correlated to pelargonidin 3,5-diglucoside, catechin, epicatechin galate, epicagocatechin galate, procyanidin A2, quercitin 3-glucoside and trans-resveratrol (r = 0.9). In DPPH assay, mini rose showed the highest activity in the non-dialyzed fraction, while cravine showed the highest activity in the dialyzed fraction, which was mainly correlated to syringic acid (r = 1.0), pelargonidin 3,5-diglucoside and epicatechin (r = 0.9). Results show great variability in the phenolic composition and their bioaccessibility among the edible flowers studied. Several members of the Brassicaeae family are known to possess beneficial properties which positively impact human diet, thanks to the presence of antioxidants, bioactive polyphenols and amino acids. B. rapa , one of the most widespread and economically relevant species, represents an outstanding example. The aim of this study is to investigate, at the molecular level, the effect of plant aging on the concentration of some biologically relevant compounds in different parts of the plant. Using HPLC and NMR techniques, the quantification of polyphenolic species (caffeic acid, quercetin and rutin), succinic acid and alanine was performed in flowers and leaves of young and mature B. rapa plants.

Background: Ficus carica L., an ancient source of food and medicines, is rich in valuable nutritional and secondary compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer effects. The present study is the first attempt to examine hairy root (HR) induction of F. carica (Sabz and Siah) by inoculating the 3-week-old shoots and leaves with different strains of Agrobacterium rhizogenes and also to investigate methyl jasmonate (MeJA) elicitation of HRs to produce a fast and high-yield production method for secondary metabolites., Results: The maximum transformation rate (100%) was achieved by inoculating the shoots with Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain A7. Siah HRs elicited with 100 and 200 μmol L -1 MeJA and Sabz HRs with 100 μmol L -1 MeJA showed the highest total phenolic content. The highest flavonoid content was 3.935 mg QE g -1 DW in Siah HRs treated with 200 μmol L -1 MeJA and 2.762 mg QE g -1 DW in Sabz HRs treated with 300 μmol L -1 MeJA. The 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value of HRs were affected by MeJA treatments. Methyl jasmonate elicitation also significantly enhanced the content of six phenolic acids (gallic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid, and cinnamic acid) and three flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, and apigenin). Main Conclusion: During their domestication process, the species of the genus Opuntia lose their ability to survive in the wild. Presence and concentration of secondary metabolites which play a role in the interaction with their surroundings are modified but without an identifiable pattern. A domestication gradient based on morphological characteristics has been previously described for the species in the Opuntia genus. Secondary metabolites are a diverse group of bioactive compounds that relate to a species evolution, both in their natural and artificial (domestication process) selection environments. In addition, these compounds are associated with plant resistance to stress when growing in the wild. A comprehensive characterization of secondary metabolite profiles in the Opuntia genus that accounts for the genotypic differences related to the degree of domestication has not previously been conducted. This study evaluated the phytochemical composition of young cladodes from fifteen variants, of O. ficus-indica, O. albicarpa Sheinvar, and O. megacantha Salm-Dyck, identified as species with a highly advanced, advanced and intermediate degree of domestication, respectively, and O. hyptiacantha A. Web, and O. streptacantha Lem. identified as wild-intermediate and wild species. Analyses were carried out using a HPLC-diode array detection technique. Out of the 13 identified and quantified phenolic molecules and terpenoids, only the caffeic, ferulic and syringic acids, and the terpenoid β-amyrin were present in all variants. The flavonoid luteolin was absent in all five species. Gallic, vallinic, p-hydroxybenzoic, chlorogenic and p-coumaric acids were only present in 53-87% of variants; flavonoids quercetin, isorhamnetin, rutin and apigenin in 47-87% of the variants. Both, oleanolic acid and peniocerol, were present only in 60% of variants. Isorhamnetin was absent in O. hyptiacantha and quercetin in O. streptacntha. Differences and similarities in the secondary metabolites content showed no recognizable trend relating to the degree of domestication across the species in this genus.

Nowadays, the increased prevalence of sub-health significantly affects human health worldwide. Suppressed sub-healthy by dietotherapy/herbal remedy which showed excellent safety profile, low cost and effectiveness, is an effective way. In this research, the fingerprint and antioxidant activity of Sabia parviflora were obtained by HPLC instrument and DPPH, ABTS, FRAP heatmap assays. And the antioxidant active substances were selected by spectrum-effect relationship. The results showed that significant differences in chemical compositions of samples from different sources, and EW, EE extracts had strong antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of Sabia parviflora was mainly determined by the complex interaction of various flavonoids (promoting, competing or antagonizing). These findings revealed that the abundant flavonoids in Sabia parviflora had significant antioxidant activity and could be potential antioxidants. The crude flavonoid extract of pollen (CFP) of four species of honeybee pollens were extracted with ethanol, and the total flavonoid contents ranged from 3.4 to 14.5 mg rutin/g dry weight. The antioxidant activities of the CFPs were evaluated from both chemical and cytological aspects. Comprehensive antioxidant scores were determined based on these two evaluation systems. The results showed that canola CFP had the highest antioxidant capacity among the four CFPs. A cytotoxicity assay was conducted to assess the safety threshold of the CFPs, and canola CFP was proved to be the least toxic to vascular endothelial cell. Of the four tested CFPs, this research suggests that canola CFP is the most promising natural antioxidant. In addition, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis detected seven flavonoid glycosides in the hydrolysates of the four CFPs. Among them, quercetin and kaempferol were present in all four honeybee pollen extracts, but there were significant differences between their contents. A correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation between the content of quercetin in the pollen extract and the extract's antioxidant activity. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Many varieties of honeybee pollen are commercially available. The results of this study help guide consumers to choose honeybee pollens that have a better antioxidant effect. This work aims to prolong the storage stability of polyphenols, obtained from grape pomace, using a spray drying-based microencapsulation technique. The microcapsules obtained under optimal conditions were stored at two different relative humidities (33% and 52%) during 75 days. The analyses of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and individual phenolic compounds were carried out every 15 days, and the most stable microcapsules were achieved with maltodextrin DE 4-7 prepared by adding gum Arabic to the wall material at a ratio of 8:2. The phenolic content loss rate was found to be in a range of 0.93-5.42 % depending on phenolic compound. The decrease in the content of rutin, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, caffeic acid, gallic acid, caftaric acid and catechin was only 0.93, 2.09, 2.13, 2.27, 2.41, 3.40 and 5.42%, respectively. A new and sensitive electrochemical sensor for rutin determination was developed based on cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) functionalized graphene (Gr) and palladium nanoparticles (Pd) (CTAC-Gr-PdNPs) composite. Rutin displayed remarkably increased electrochemical activity on the CTAC-Gr-PdNPs composite modified electrode due to the synergistic effect of the large surface area and electrocatalytic activity of both Gr and Pd nanoparticles, which offers the feasibility for highly sensitive determination of rutin via electrochemistry. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the oxidation peak current of rutin was proportional to its concentration in the range of 2.0 × 10 -8 -1.0 × 10 -6  mol L -1 , and the limit of detection (LOD) was 5 nM (S/N = 3). The developed method was successfully applied to determine rutin in pharmaceuticals with satisfactory recoveries, which shows that the fabricated sensor has potential in pharmaceutical analysis.

The Commelina erecta L. (C. erecta) also known as erva-de-santa-luzia is reported by local population to have medical properties against some pathological conditions. In this study, two extracts of C. erecta leaves (aqueous and ethanolic) were phytochemically analysed and evaluated for their in-vitro antioxidant activities by DPPH, TBARS, NO assays and cell viability assays. The ultra-high performance liquid chromatography followed by tandem mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of rutin and caffeic acid in aqueous and ethanolic extract. The total polyphenols in aqueous and ethanolic extracts found were 142.7 ± 3.0 and 123.1 ± 5.8 μg/mL of GAE, respectively. The ethanolic extract (5 mg/mL) inhibits TBARS by 33.8%, and the aqueous extract (5 mg/mL) exhibited scavenger property against nitric oxide derivatives to an extent of 77.8%. In cell culture, both extracts improved cell survivability under H2O2 induced oxidative stress. Thus, C. erecta extract is a good candidate to become a phytotherapic medicine.

It is found that a covalent triazine framework (CTF-1) (that was prepared from 1,4-dicyanobenzene) exhibits oxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of luminol with dissolved oxygen in alkaline condition to produce intense blue chemiluminescence (CL). The reaction follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics and shows strong specificity for luminol. Reactive oxygen species including 1 O 2 , • OH and O 2 •- are testified to be involved in the reaction and responsible for the CL. The reaction was applied to the determination of the radical-scavenging activity of antioxidants, with rutin, kaempferol and ferulic acid serving as model scavengers. A sensitive CL method was developed for the determination of rutin based on its inhibitory effect on the reaction. The CL system gave a linear response to the concentration of rutin in the range of 0.03-0.25 μmol·L -1 with a limit of detection of 0.015 μmol·L -1 . The practicability of the method was demonstrated by successful determination of rutin in tablets and in Flos Sophorae Immaturus. Graphical Abstract.

This study aims to give an unprecedented contribution on the chemical composition and bioactivities of the most produced and appreciated Portuguese fig variety ("Pingo de Mel") with the view of expanding the knowledge on its potentialities. An advanced characterization of its peel and pulp parts was carried out. Four free sugars (glucose, fructose, trehalose and sucrose), 5 organic acids (oxalic, quinic, malic, citric, and succinic acids), tocopherols in all their 4 forms, besides 23 fatty acids were detected in the samples. Fifteen different phenolic components were found in the peel hydroethanolic extract; whereas 12 were detected in the pulp hydroethanolic extract. Quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (rutin) was the major constituent of the peel, accounting for 33.8% of its phenolic content, followed by 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and vanillic acid malonyl di-deoxyhexoside. Caffeic acid derivatives, such as caffeic acid hexosides, were the major components of pulp, followed by vanillic acid derivatives and O-caffeoylquinic acid. Both extracts displayed promising antioxidant capacities in all methods used, namely the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging, the reducing power, the inhibition of β-carotene bleaching assays, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay and the oxidative haemolysis inhibition assay; however, the peel presented significantly lower IC 50 values than pulp. The extracts showed practically identical antibacterial capacities, being effective against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MICs = 2.5 mg/mL), besides methicillin-resistant S. aureus, Escherichia coli and Morganella morganii (MICs = 5 mg/mL). The obtained results evidence that the fig peel is superior to the corresponding pulp as it relates to nutritional and phenolic profiles as well as bioactivities, endorsing the urgency in valorising and exploiting this usually discarded industrial by-product., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Tartary buckwheat grains were subjected to hydrothermal treatments (steaming/boiling/autoclaving) whose effects on rutin enrichment in the buckwheat flour by rutin migration from the bran fraction were investigated in terms of optical, rheological, thermal, and microstructural properties. The highest amount of rutin was observed in the bran out of the native milling fractions (hull, bran, and flour). The hydrothermal treatments however increased the level of rutin in the flour, even showing a higher level of rutin than the bran in the autoclaved sample. Furthermore, rutin in the hydrothermally-treated flours was not degraded into quercetin by mixing with water. Scanning electron microscopic images demonstrated that the granules of buckwheat starch round in shape and grouped in lumps were disrupted by the hydrothermal treatments. The sweet-mellow taste sensation is a unique and typical feature of premium congou black tea infusions. To explore the key taste-active compounds that influence the sweet-mellow taste, a sensory and molecular characterization was performed on thirty-three congou black tea infusions presenting different taste qualities, including the sweet-mellow, mellow-pure, or less-mellow taste. An integrated application of quantitative analysis of 48 taste-active compounds, taste contribution analysis, and further validation by taste supplementation experiments, combined with human sensory evaluation revealed that caffeine, γ-aminobutyric acid, rutin, succinic acid, citric acid, and gallic acid negatively affect the sweet-mellow taste, whereas glucose, sucrose, and ornithine positively contribute to the sweet-mellow taste of congou black tea infusions. Particularly, rutin, γ-aminobutyric acid, gallic acid, and caffeine, which impart the major inhibitory effect to the manifestation of the sweet-mellow taste, were identified as the key influencing components through stepwise screening and validation experiments. A modest level of these compounds was found to be favorable for the development and manifestation of the sweet-mellow taste. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the physicochemical and antioxidant stability of nanoemulsions containing a Physalis peruviana calyx extract (CPp-NE) and free extracts under different storage conditions (7 and 25 °C) and with absence or incidence of light for 120 days. The calyx extracts were prepared with ethanol 60% and characterized for later preparation of the nanoemulsions by spontaneous emulsification. The formulations presented nanometric sizes, low polydispersity index, negative zeta potential, acid pH, rutin content (11 μg·mL -1 ), and encapsulation efficiency of 85%. Regarding the stability, the droplet size and PdI of the CPp-NE stored at refrigeration temperature in the dark, room temperature in the dark, and refrigeration temperature with light incidence were stable for 120 days and with no visible changes in the formulations. The antioxidant capacity was related to the reducing capacity, and the best results were found for nanoemulsions stored at room temperature and in absence of light. Background: Natural extracts with beneficial biological activities are nowadays of high interest, in various treatment or prophylaxis. Hypericum capitatum has been known for its curative effects for centuries and its extracts have become of interest due to their distinct activity among other Hypericaceae members. In this study, further light is aimed to be shed on the secondary-metabolites composition of H. capitatum extracts, using chromatographic techniques and Electron paramagnetic resonance profiles in alkaline medium. Considering that no previous works explored the anti-inflammatory activity of H. capitatum, here, an in vivo study is also designed in order to evaluate this property by assessing the impact of one of H. capitatum extracts in ameliorating turpentine oil-induced inflammation on rats and to quantify their blood antioxidants level., Methods: Chromatographic techniques and Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy were used in order to describe the chemical profile in different parts of the plant. The in vivo study on turpentine-oil induced inflammation in rats included three doses of H. capitatum extract expressed in rutin concentration. Oxidative stress was measured using total oxidative status, total antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress index, 3-nitrotyrosine, nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase and the inflammatory response was evaluated by performing a complete blood cells count and C reactive protein., Results: The extract was remarkably rich in rutin; however, other polyphenolic-like minor components appeared important in explaining the observed biological properties. The tested extract prevents the increase of inflammation-induced white blood cell count, number of neutrophils, and serum nitric oxide, and did so in a dose-dependent manner, similarly to the positive control-diclofenac. In addition, the same extract appeared to be a good alternative to diclofenac to restore total oxidative status, thiobarbituric active reactive species, total proteins and C reactive proteins. Moreover, antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and total serum thiol concentration were significantly increased by the tested extract., Conclusions: Due to its powerful reservoir rich in rutin, H. capitatum extract depicted its in vivo antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects indicating it to be a good alternative to conventional drugs for oxidative stress protection.

The present work reports cocoon silk fibroin (SF)as a unique precursor for the in-situ fabrication of well-engineered, stable and leach free gold nanoparticle doped carbonaceous materials (AuNPs@NSC). In principle, at the molecular level, SF has a singular structure that can be converted to a N-doped aromatic carbon structure by heat treatment. The electrochemical properties of the prepared nanocomposite were examined by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. A flexible three electrode sensor system with AuNPs@NSC-modified working electrodes has been developed, to achieve easy operation and quick and accurate responses. The electrochemical results showed that the sensor made by the AuNPs@NSC-modified working electrode demonstrated high sensitivity for the detection of rutin, which is attributed to the good distribution of the AuNPs on the carbon matrix. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the AuNPs@NSC electrode was found to have a linear response in the range of 0.11-250 μM and a comparably low limit of detection of 0.02 μM (S/N = 3). To ensure the accuracy and applicability of the sensors, the concentration of rutin in the commodity (rutin capsule, 10 mg/capsule) was examined, and the sensor provided high precision with a minimum relative error (RE) of 3.3%. Recently, the flowers of Dendrobium catenatum (D. officinale) have been approved as new food ingredient. This study aimed to investigate the herb-markers and their antioxidant activities in methanolic extracts of D. catenatum flowers, and to establish the quality evaluation methods for raw materials and their products of flower by HPLC. The methanolic extract of 11 strains of D. catenatum flowers were found to contain a high content of total phenol and flavonoids, and they possessed potential antioxidant capacities based on DPPH radical scavenging assay. A total of 21 phenolic herb-markers were selected according to the similarity and principal component analysis of the chromatographic fingerprinting profiles. Their structures were further elucidated by UV, HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS and NMR analyses. The identified compounds included 2 phenylpropanoids, 11C-glycosylflavones and 6 O-glycosylflavones, which could be employed as the indicators for quantitative evaluation of the quality and authenticity of the flowers. Based on the pre-column DPPH/ABTS + -HPLC analysis, the major compounds contributed to the antioxidative activity were identified as 1-O-caffeoyl-β-D-glucoside, rutin and isoquercitrin, all of which, were also the most abundant constituents in the methanolic extract. Bunium species have been reported to be used both as food and in traditional medicines. The scientific community has attempted to probe into the pharmacological and chemical profiles of this genus. Nonetheless, many species have not been investigated fully to date. In this study, we determined the phenolic components, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory activities of aerial parts of four Bunium species (B. sayai, B. pinnatifolium, B. brachyactis and B. macrocarpum). Results showed that B. microcarpum and B. pinnatifolium were strong antioxidants as evidenced in the DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP assays. B. brachyactis was the most effective metal chelator, and displayed high enzyme inhibition against cholinesterase, tyrosinase, amylase, glucosidase, and lipase. The four species showed varied antimicrobial activity against each microorganism. Overall, they showed high activity against P. mirabilis and E. coli (MIC and MBC <1 mg mL -1 ). B. brachyactis was more effective against Aspergillus versicolor compared to the standard drug ketoconazole. B. brachyactis was also more effective than both ketoconazole and bifonazole against Trichoderma viride. B. sayai was more effective than ketoconazole in inhibiting A. fumigatus. B. sayai was most non-toxic to HEK 293 (cellular viability = 117%) and HepG2 (cellular viability = 104%). The highest level of TPC was observed in B. pinnatifolium (35.94 mg GAE g -1 ) while B. microcarpum possessed the highest TFC (39.21 mg RE g -1 ). Seventy four compounds were detected in B. microcarpum, 70 in B. brachyactis, 66 in B. sayai, and 51 in B. pinnatifolium. Quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, pantothenic acid, esculin, isoquercitrin, rutin, apigenin, and scopoletin were present in all the four species. The aim of this research was to analyze sugars and phenolics of pollen obtained from 15 different 'Oblačinska' sour cherry clones and to assess the chemical fingerprint of this cultivar. Carbohydrate analysis was done using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD), while polyphenols were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD MS/MS) system. Glucose was the most abundant sugar, followed by fructose and sucrose. Some samples had high level of stress sugars, especially trehalose. Rutin was predominantly polyphenol in a quantity up to 181.12 mg/kg (clone III/9), with chlorogenic acid (up to 59.93 mg/kg in clone III/9) and p -coumaric acid (up to 53.99 mg/kg in clone VIII/1) coming after. According to the principal component analysis (PCA), fructose, maltose, maltotriose, sorbitol, and trehalose were the most important sugars in separating pollen samples. PCA showed splitting off clones VIII/1, IV/8, III/9, and V/P according to the quantity of phenolics and dissimilar profiles. Large differences in chemical composition of studied 'Oblačinska sour cherry' clone pollen were shown, proving that it is not a cultivar, but population. Finally, due to the highest level of phenolics, clones IV/8, XV/3, and VIII/1 could be singled out as a promising one for producing functional food and/or in medicinal treatments., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

A two-dimensional separation and analysis method, based on liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (LC-ESI-IMS), is developed for the determination of seven indicative ingredients (danshensu, glycyrrhizic acid, gastrodin, chlorogenic acid, puerarin, baicalin, and rutin) in oral liquids of Chinese medicine. The sample was first separated on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C 18 column (50 mm×1 mm, 1.7 μm). The post-column effluent was directed to an adjustable flow splitter with a split ratio of 50:1. The low-flow and high-flow outlets were connected to an ion mobility spectrometer and a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, respectively. The experimental conditions for LC, spray voltage, drift tube temperature, gas pre-heating temperature, and drift gas velocity were systematically optimized. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantitation (LOQs) for the seven analytes were 2-10 μg/mL and 5-25 μg/mL, respectively. The proposed method was applied for the analysis of real oral liquids of Chinese medicine samples. By coupling LC and IMS, two-dimensional separation could be achieved based on hydrophobicity difference and ionic mobility disparity, thus providing more comprehensive measurement information than LC or IMS used alone.

Flowers of Citrus plants are used as mild sedatives and for the treatment of insomnia in traditional medicines. In Japan, tea made from the flowers of Satsuma mandarin is consumed as healthy drink. Hesperidin ( 1 ), hesperetin ( 2 ), rutin ( 3 ), quercetin ( 4 ), nicotiflorin ( 5 ), eriocitrin ( 6 ), narirutin ( 7 ), phenylethyl glucoside ( 8 ) and unshuoside A ( 9 ) were isolated from the MeOH extract of fresh flowers. Structure elucidation of these compounds was performed on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data. Among them, rutin ( 3 ), quercetin ( 4 ) and eriocitrin ( 6 ) showed potent free radical scavenging activity, whereas hesperetin ( 2 ) and quercetin ( 4 ) showed potent α -glucosidase inhibitory activity.

Fig fruit (Ficus carica L.) is one of the most important agricultural products of the tropic and subtropics areas. In the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, the fig is included in diet since the ancient years and it is considered as the symbol of longevity. This review presents the main phytochemical compounds found in fresh and dried figs of different varieties, describes the analytical methods used for their determination and discuss the antioxidant capacity and the potential effects of figs in human health. Phenolic acids and flavonoids are the major types of phytochemical compounds that have been found in fresh and dried figs. Their levels are strongly influenced by various factors such as the color, the part of fruit, the maturity and the drying process. Gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside and epicatechin are the most predominant phenolic acids and flavonoids in dried and fresh fig varieties. Extracts of dark-colored varieties contain higher amount of phenolic compounds than the light-colored varieties. Fruit skin contributes most to the amount of phenolic compounds compared to the fruit pulp. The ripening stage affects the concentrations of phenolic compounds in figs, the maximum have been found in ripe fruit. On the other hand, contradictory results have been reported in the literature regarding the effect of air- and sun- drying on the total content of phytochemical compounds, as well as on the concentrations of individual phenolic compounds and carotenoids in figs. The antioxidant capacity of figs is highly correlated with their amount of phenolic compounds. The leaves, roots, fruit and latex of the plant are known for their health properties including acetyl cholinesterase inhibition, antifungal, anti-helminthic and anticarcinogenic activities. Future efforts should be focused on the application of fig extracts as functional ingredients of food products, on clinical trials in order to confirm the beneficial effect of plant extracts in human health and, on the valorization of the waste material produced during figs' processing., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Honeydew honey has differentiated chemical and physicochemical characteristics besides potential functional properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. In this sense, the interest and consumption of this honey as a functional product by the food industry and consumers have increased. Honeydew honeys usually present dark color, a lower content of monosaccharides and higher values of pH, acidity, electric conductivity, proteins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and oligosaccharides compared to blossom honeys, which contribute to its outstanding biological activities. Consequently, contaminations and adulterations of this honey can occur and compromise the quality, safety and authenticity of honeydew honey. Thus, detailed knowledge of the composition and properties of honeydew honeys is of great importance, especially considering that honeydew honeys are still few studied and therefore underestimated. Vitis vinifera leaves are wine industry wastes. In this study, the chemical composition, antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity of six Italian grapevine leaves extracts (Arvino, Gaglioppo, Greco Nero, Magliocco Canino, Magliocco Dolce, and Nocera) were evaluated. HPLC analyses revealed quercetin as dominant constituent (127.52-187.33 mg/kg) followed by rutin (55.99-143.67 mg/kg). The antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and β-carotene bleaching tests. Gaglioppo showed the highest radical scavenging ability with IC 50 of 7.2 and 19.1 μg/mL, for DPPH and ABTS, respectively. Magliocco Dolce showed a 1.6-times higher FRAP activity than that of the positive control BHT. The anti-proliferative activity was determined by SRB assay against MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, A549 and COR-L23 human tumor cells. Greco Nero showed the highest anti-proliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 with IC 50 of 28.4 μg/mL. Ajuga bracteosa an important medicinal herb, is getting endangered worldwide due to destructive harvesting by pharmaceutical industries in its different habitats. It is in dire need for protection and demands conservation and sustainable utilization. In the present study, effects of α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) under different spectral lights were estimated on the growth, secondary metabolism and biosynthesis of phenolic acids in adventitious roots (AR) cultures of A. bracteosa. Among the different spectral lights, highest AR induction frequency (88%) and formation of biomass (72 g/L FW and 22 g/L DW) were recorded in explants incubated in the presence of 1.5 mg/L NAA under yellow light. Maximum production of poly phenols (TPC;44.2 mg) and flavonoids (TFC;2.51 mg) were recorded in the AR cultures grown in the presence of blue light. Further, highest total protein content of (401.6 μg) was detected in the AR in response to normal white light. Blue spectral light induced maximum superoxide dismutase (SOD; 2.5 nM) and peroxidase activity (POD;0.85 nM) respectively, in AR cultures. Compared with other monochromatic lights, red light significantly enhanced the antioxidant potential of the AR cultures. Analysis through High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD) revealed significant variations in the levels of important phenolic acids such as gallic acid, catechin, rutin, caffeic acid, myricetin and apigenin in the AR samples treated with the lights of different spectra., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Pistachio hull is a substantial source of natural polyphenols, but a substantial volume is being wasted annually. Aqueous pistachio green hull extract (PGHE) was subjected to two-stage membrane process in order to separate a polyphenol rich fraction. The membrane conditions of each stage were investigated. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and DPPH · assay; also membrane fouling was monitored. The use of the 1 kDa cellulose membrane accompanied by 4 bar pressure and 250 rpm stirring speed was observed to be successful in the separation of a fraction with the highest amount of phenolic compound and antioxidant activity, in the retentate part. UHPLC/MS n characterization of PGHE polyphenols enabled us to identify 34 compounds, including the most abundant galloylshikimic acids, gallic acid, theogallin, galloyl-O-hexoside, quercetin-O-hexoside and pyrogallol., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
