On a regular semigroup S a compatible order ≤is defined to be ℋ-cohesive if elements that are comparable under ≤are ℋ-equivalent. In the case where S admits an inverse transversal a complete description of the ℋ-cohesive orders on S is obtained. When S is locally inverse the semilattices of ℋ-cohesive orders and amenable orders are isomorphic, and coincide if and only if S is completely simple.

We investigate the class BA of ordered regular semigroups in which each element has a biggest associate x† = max {y | xyx = x}. This class properly contains the class PO of principally ordered regular semigroups (in which there exists x⋆ = max {y | xyx ⩽x}) and is properly contained in the class BI of ordered regular semigroups in which each element has a biggest inverse x◦. We show that several basic properties of the unary operation x ↦ x⋆ in PO extend to corresponding properties of the unary operation x ↦ x† in BA. We consider naturally ordered semigroups in BA and prove that those that are orthodox contain a biggest idempotent. We determine the structure of some such semigroups in terms of a principal left ideal and a principal right ideal. We also characterise the completely simple members of BA. Finally, we consider the naturally ordered semigroups in BA that do not have a biggest idempotent.

We first consider an ordered regular semigroup S in which every element has a biggest inverse and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the subset S ○ of biggest inverses to be an inverse transversal of S. Such an inverse transversal is necessarily weakly multiplicative. We then investigate principally ordered regular semigroups S with the property that S ○ is an inverse transversal. In such a semigroup we determine precisely when the set S ☆ of biggest pre-inverses is a subsemigroup and show that in this case S ☆ is itself an inverse transversal of a subsemigroup of S. The ordered regular semigroup of 2 × 2 boolean matrices provides an informative illustrative example. The structure of S, when S ☆ is a group, is also described.

Using group congruences, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an ordered E-inversive semigroup to be a Dubreil-Jacotin semigroup. We also determine when such a semigroup is naturally ordered. In particular, when the subset of regular elements is a subsemigroup it contains a multiplicative inverse transversal.

We report a precise measurement of the masses of the $\Xi_c(2645)$ and $\Xi_c(2815)$ baryons using a data sample of 414 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle collaboration at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The states $\Xi_c(2645)^{0,+}$ are observed in the $\Xi_c^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$ decay modes, while the $\Xi_c(2815)^{0,+}$ are reconstructed in the $\Xi_c(2645)^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$ decay modes. The following mass splittings are determined: $m_{\Xi_c(2645)^+} - m_{\Xi_c(2645)^0} = (-0.1 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.6 {(\rm syst})) {\rm MeV}/{\rm c}^2$ and $m_{\Xi_c(2815)^+} - m_{\Xi_c(2815)^0} = (-3.4 \pm 1.9 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.9 {(\rm syst})) {\rm MeV}/{\rm c}^2$ with a much better precision than the current world averages. We also observe a new decay mode, $\Xi_c(2980)^{0,+} \to \Xi_c(2645)^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$.

We have searched for neutrinoless τ lepton decays into l and V0, where l stands for an electron or muon, and V0 for a vector meson (φ{symbol}, ω, K* 0, over(K, )* 0 or ρ0), using 543 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider. No excess of signal events over the expected background has been observed, and we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (5.9 - 18) × 10-8 at the 90% confidence level. These upper limits are significantly more restrictive than our previous results for the lφ{symbol}, l K* 0, l over(K, )* 0 and l ρ0 modes. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

An endomorphism on an algebra 𝒜 is said to be “strong” if it is compatible with every congruence on 𝒜; and 𝒜 is said to have the “strong endomorphism kernel property” if every congruence on 𝒜, different from the universal congruence, is the kernel of a strong endomorphism on 𝒜. Here we consider this property in the context of Ockham algebras. In particular, for those MS-algebras that have this property we describe the structure of their dual space in terms of 1-point compactifications of discrete spaces.

We report a high-statistics measurement of the relative branching fraction Br(D0 --> pi+pi-pi0)/Br(D0 --> K-pi+pi0). A 357 inverse fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider was used for the analysis. The relative branching fraction Br(D0 --> pi+pi-pi0)/Br(D0 --> K-pi+pi0) is determined with an accuracy comparable to the latest world average value.

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the detection of colorectal liver metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS Pre-operative MRI scanning of the liver was performed by a single radiologist and the size and number of definite liver metastases were recorded. Patients then underwent hepatectomy with routine intra-operative ultrasonography (IOUS) and resected specimens were sent for histopathology. Pathology findings were compared with those of MRI scans to determine the sensitivity of this imaging modality. Exclusions were patients undergoing hepatic resection more than 4 weeks after the MRI scan, those undergoing chemotherapy at the time of the scan, and those with conglomerate unilobar metastases. RESULTS Complete data were available for 84 patients. There was total agreement between MRI, IOUS and histology in 79 patients (101 metastases). MRI missed 5 metastases in 5 patients that were found on IOUS (or palpation of superficial lesions) and subsequently confirmed by histological examination. These measured 5 mm or less (4 patients) and 7 mm (one patient). The sensitivity of MRI in the detection of colorectal liver metastases was thus 94% for all lesions and 100% for lesions 1 cm or larger in diameter. CONCLUSIONS MRI of the liver is a non-invasive technique with an extremely high degree of sensitivity in the detection of colorectal liver metastases and should be considered as the ‘gold standard’ in the pre-operative imaging of these patients.

63. Naturally ordered regular semigroups with an inverse monoid transversal

The notion of an inverse transversal of a regular semigroup is well-known. Here we investigate naturally ordered regular semigroups that have an inverse transversal. Such semigroups are necessarily locally inverse and the inverse transversal is a quasi-ideal. After considering various general properties that relate the imposed order to the natural order, we highlight the situation in which the inverse transversal is a monoid. The regularity of Green’s relations is also characterised. Finally, we determine the structure of a naturally ordered regular semigroup with an inverse monoid transversal.

KS 0 KS 0 production in two-photon collisions has been studied using a 397.6 fb-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- collider. For the first time the cross sections are measured in the two-photon center-of-mass energy range between 2.4 GeV and 4.0 GeV and angular range | cos θ* | < 0.6. Combining the results with measurements of γ γ → K+ K- from Belle, we observe that the cross section ratio σ (KS 0 KS 0) / σ (K+ K-) decreases from ∼0.13 to ∼0.01 with increasing energy. Signals for the χc 0 and χc 2 charmonium states are also observed. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report measurements of the charmless semileptonic decays B0 → π- / ρ- l+ ν and B+ → π0 / ρ0 l+ ν, based on a sample of 2.75 × 108B over(B, ) events collected at the Υ{hooked} (4 S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- asymmetric collider. In this analysis, the accompanying B meson is reconstructed in the semileptonic mode B → D(*) l ν, enabling detection of the signal modes with high purity. We measure the branching fractions B (B0 → π- l+ ν) = (1.38 ± 0.19 ± 0.14 ± 0.03) × 10-4, B (B0 → ρ- l+ ν) = (2.17 ± 0.54 ± 0.31 ± 0.08) × 10-4, B (B+ → π0 l+ ν) = (0.77 ± 0.14 ± 0.08 ± 0.00) × 10-4 and B (B+ → ρ0 l+ ν) = (1.33 ± 0.23 ± 0.17 ± 0.05) × 10-4, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to form factor uncertainties, respectively. For each mode we also present the partial branching fractions in three q2 intervals: q2 < 8, 8 ≤ q2 < 16, and q2 ≥ 16 GeV2 / c2. From our partial branching fractions for B → π l ν and recent results for the form factor from unquenched Lattice QCD calculations, we obtain values of the CKM matrix element | Vu b |. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. An ordered pair (e,f) of idempotents of a regular semigroup is called a skew pair if ef is not idempotent whereas fe is idempotent. Previously [1] we have established that there are four distinct types of skew pairs of idempotents. We have also described (as quotient semigroups of certain regular Rees matrix semigroups [2]) the structure of the smallest regular semigroups that contain precisely one skew pair of each of the four types, there being to within isomorphism ten such semigroups. These we call the derived Rees matrix semigroups. In the particular case of full transformation semigroups we proved in [3] that TX contains all four skew pairs of idempotents if and only if |X| ≥ 6. Here we prove that TX contains all ten derived Rees matrix semigroups if and only if |X| ≥ 7.

We have searched for neutrinoless τ lepton decays into lhh or l V0, where l stands for an electron or muon, h for a charged light hadron, π or K, and V0 for a neutral vector meson, ρ0, K* (892)0 and φ{symbol}, using a 158 fb-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- collider. Since the number of events observed are consistent with the expected background, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of (1.6 - 8.0) × 10-7 for various decay modes at the 90% confidence level. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. We have searched for the lepton flavor violating decays τ- → l- KS 0 (l = e or μ), using a data sample of 281 fb-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- asymmetric-energy collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes, and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B (τ- → e- KS 0) < 5.6 × 10-8 and B (τ- → μ- KS 0) < 4.9 × 10-8 at the 90% confidence level. These results improve the previously published limits set by the CLEO Collaboration by factors of 16 and 19, respectively. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have measured the branching fractions for the exclusive decay modes B→χc1(2)K(K∗)B→χc1(2)K(K∗) using a 140 fb−1140 fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e+e− collider. The measured branching fractions for B+→χc1K+B+→χc1K+, B0→χc1K0B0→χc1K0, B0→χc1K∗0B0→χc1K∗0 and B+→χc1K∗+B+→χc1K∗+ decay modes are (4.5±0.2±0.5)×10−4(4.5±0.2±0.5)×10−4, (3.5±0.3±0.5)×10−4(3.5±0.3±0.5)×10−4, (3.1±0.3±0.7)×10−4(3.1±0.3±0.7)×10−4 and (4.1±0.6±0.9)×10−4(4.1±0.6±0.9)×10−4, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic. We do not observe statistically significant signals for the B→χc2K(K∗)B→χc2K(K∗) decay modes and set upper limits at the 90% confidence level. We also study the helicity distribution for B→χc1K∗B→χc1K∗ decay mode and show that the longitudinal polarization component is dominant.

Using kaon secondary interactions in the material of the Belle detector, we search for both inclusive and exclusive production of the Θ(1540) +. We set an upper limit of 2.5% at the 90% C.L. on the ratio of the Θ(1540)+ to Λ(1520) inclusive production cross sections. We also search for the Θ(1540)+ as an intermediate resonance in the charge exchange reaction K+n→pKS 0. We set an upper limit of ΓΘ+

- Abstract
The Collins effect connects transverse quark spin with a measurable azimuthal dependence in the yield of hadronic fragments around the quark's momentum vector. Using two different reconstruction methods, we find evidence of statistically significant azimuthal asymmetries for charged pion pairs in e(+)e(-) annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 10.52 GeV, which can be attributed to a transverse polarization of the primordial quarks. The measurement was performed using a sample of 79 x 10(6) hadronic events collected with the Belle detector.

Performance tests of some aspects of the CMS ECAL were carried out on modules of the "barrel" sub-system in 2002 and 2003. A brief test with high energy electron beams was made in late 2003 to validate prototypes of the new Very Front End electronics. The final versions of the monitoring and cooling systems, and of the high and low voltage regulation were used in these tests. The results are consistent with the performance targets including those for noise and overall energy resolution, required to fulfil the physics programme of CMS at the LHC. We have searched for τ lepton decays, τ-→Λπ- and τ-→Λπ-, that simultaneously violate the conservation of the lepton (L) and baryon (B) number using a data sample of 154 fb-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. No evidence for a signal was found in either of the decay modes and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(τ-→Λπ-)

We present measurements of the branching fraction, the polarization parameters and CP-violating asymmetries in B0→D*+D *- decays using a 140 fb-1 data sample collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e+e- collider. We obtain B(B0→D*+D*-)=[0. 81±0.08(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10-3, R⊥=0.19±0. 08(stat)±0.01(syst), R0=0.57±0.08(stat)±0.02(syst), S=-0.75±0.56(stat)±0.12(syst) and A=-0.26±0.26(stat) ±0.06(syst). Consistency with Standard Model expectations is also discussed.

We have measured π + π − and K + K − production in two-photon collisions using 87.7 fb −1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the asymmetric energy e + e − collider KEKB. The cross sections are measured to high precision in the two-photon center-of-mass energy ( W ) range between 2.4 GeV W 4.1 GeV and angular region | cos θ ∗ | 0.6 . The cross section ratio σ ( γ γ → K + K − ) / σ ( γ γ → π + π − ) is measured to be 0.89 ± 0.04 ( stat. ) ± 0.15 ( syst. ) in the range of 3.0 GeV W 4.1 GeV , where the ratio is energy-independent. We observe a sin −4 θ ∗ behavior of the cross section in the same W range. Production of χ c 0 and χ c 2 mesons is observed in both γ γ → π + π − and γ γ → K + K − modes.

We have searched for the lepton-flavor-violating decay τ → e γ using a data sample of 86.7 fb−1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e + e − collider. No evidence for a signal is obtained, and we set an upper limit for the branching fraction B ( τ → e γ ) 3.9 × 10 −7 at the 90% C.L.

We report measurements of radiative B decays with K η γ final states, using a data sample of 253 fb −1 recorded at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − storage ring. We observe B + → K + η γ for the first time with a branching fraction of ( 8.4 ± 1.5 (stat) −0.9 +1.2 (syst) ) × 10 −6 for M K η 2.4 GeV / c 2 , and find evidence of B 0 → K 0 η γ . We also search for B → K 3 ∗ ( 1780 ) γ .

An algebra 𝒜 has the endomorphism kernel property if every congruence on 𝒜 different from the universal congruence is the kernel of an endomorphism on 𝒜. We first consider this property when 𝒜 is a finite distributive lattice, and show that it holds if and only if 𝒜 is a cartesian product of chains. We then consider the case where 𝒜 is an Ockham algebra, and describe in particular the structure of the finite de Morgan algebras that have this property.

Basic Linear Algebra is a text for first year students, working from concrete examples towards abstract theorems, via tutorial-type exercises. The book explains the algebra of matrices with applications to analytic geometry, systems of linear equations, difference equations, and complex numbers. Linear equations are treated via Hermite normal forms, which provides a successful and concrete explanation of the notion of linear independence. Another highlight is the connection between linear mappings and matrices, leading to the change of basis theorem which opens the door to the notion of similarity. The authors are well known algebraists with considerable experience of teaching introductory courses on linear algebra to students at St Andrews. This book is based on one previously published by Chapman and Hall, but it has been extensively updated to include further explanatory text and fully worked solutions to the exercises that all 1st year students should be able to answer.

IT, as it is often said, mathematics is the queen of science then algebra is surely the jewel in her crown. In the course of its vast development over the last half-century, algebra has emerged as the subject in which one can observe pure mathe matical reasoning at its best. Its elegance is matched only by the ever-increasing number of its applications to an extraordinarily wide range of topics in areas other than'pure'mathematics. Here our objective is to present, in the form of a series of five concise volumes, the fundamentals of the subject. Broadly speaking, we have covered in all the now traditional syllabus that is found in first and second year university courses, as well as some third year material. Further study would be at the level of'honours options'. The reasoning that lies behind this modular presentation is simple, namely to allow the student (be he a mathematician or not) to read the subject in a way that is more appropriate to the length, content, and extent, of the various courses he has to take. Although we have taken great pains to include a wide selec tion of illustrative examples, we have not included any exer cises. For a suitable companion collection of worked examples, we would refer the reader to our series Algebra through practice (Cambridge University Press), the first five books of which are appropriate to the material covered here.

We show that every subdirectly irreducible Ockham chain belongs to the generalised variety Kω and is countable. Consideration of three particular types of finite Ockham chains, together with their order duals, leads to a determination of the structure of all finite subdirectly irreducible Ockham chains. These belong necessarily to the Berman classes K1,q and we show that there are precisely 6q+2 such chains in K1,q. We also show that there are precisely 14 subdirectly irreducible Ockham chains whose endomorphism semigroup is regular, such chains having at most 5 elements.

Here we initiate an investigation into the class eO of extended Ockham algebras, namely bounded distributive lattices endowed with a commuting pair of unary operations, one of which is an endomorphism and the other is a dual endomorphism. A consideration of the subdirectly irreducible algebras leads, via Priestley duality, to a description of all finite subdirectly irreducible eO-algebras. In particular, we show that there are precisely nine non-isomorphic subdirectly irreducible symmetric extended de Morgan algebras, all of which are simple. We also describe the corresponding lattice of varieties.

CMS is a general purpose experiment, designed to study the physics of pp collisions at 14 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It currently involves more than 2000 physicists from more than 150 institutes and 37 countries. The LHC will provide extraordinary opportunities for particle physics based on its unprecedented collision energy and luminosity when it begins operation in 2007. The principal aim of this report is to present the strategy of CMS to explore the rich physics programme offered by the LHC. This volume demonstrates the physics capability of the CMS experiment. The prime goals of CMS are to explore physics at the TeV scale and to study the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking—through the discovery of the Higgs particle or otherwise. To carry out this task, CMS must be prepared to search for new particles, such as the Higgs boson or supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model particles, from the start-up of the LHC since new physics at the TeV scale may manifest itself with modest data samples of the order of a few fb-1 or less. The analysis tools that have been developed are applied to study in great detail and with all the methodology of performing an analysis on CMS data specific benchmark processes upon which to gauge the performance of CMS. These processes cover several Higgs boson decay channels, the production and decay of new particles such as Z' and supersymmetric particles, Bs production and processes in heavy ion collisions. The simulation of these benchmark processes includes subtle effects such as possible detector miscalibration and misalignment. Besides these benchmark processes, the physics reach of CMS is studied for a large number of signatures arising in the Standard Model and also in theories beyond the Standard Model for integrated luminosities ranging from 1 fb-1 to 30 fb-1. The Standard Model processes include QCD, B-physics, diffraction, detailed studies of the top quark properties, and electroweak physics topics such as the W and Z0 boson properties. The production and decay of the Higgs particle is studied for many observable decays, and the precision with which the Higgs boson properties can be derived is determined. About ten different supersymmetry benchmark points are analysed using full simulation. The CMS discovery reach is evaluated in the SUSY parameter space covering a large variety of decay signatures. Furthermore, the discovery reach for a plethora of alternative models for new physics is explored, notably extra dimensions, new vector boson high mass states, little Higgs models, technicolour and others. Methods to discriminate between models have been investigated. This report is organized as follows. Chapter 1, the Introduction, describes the context of this document. Chapters 2–6 describe examples of full analyses, with photons, electrons, muons, jets, missing ET, B-mesons and τ's, and for quarkonia in heavy ion collisions. Chapters 7–15 describe the physics reach for Standard Model processes, Higgs discovery and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Here we give a description of the structure of the lattice of congruences of a subdirectly irreducible algebra in dpk 1,1.

For an algebra in pK ωwe show that the compact congruences form a dual Stone lattice and use this to determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a principal congruence to be complemented. We also describe the lattice of subvarieties of pK 1,1identifying therein the biggest subvariety in which every principal congruence is complemented, and the biggest subvariety in which the intersection of two principal congruences is principal.

Given an ordered set P and an antitone map g : P → P, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an odd positive integer k such that gk is isotone. The results obtained have a natural application to the dual space of an Ockham algebra. In particular, we determine the cardinality of the endomorphism semigroup of a finite subdirectly irreducible Ockham algebra.

We consider an ordered regular semigroupS in which every elementx has a biggest inversexo and Green’s relations ℒ, ℜ are weakly regular. We show that ife, f are idempotents ofS such thate ≤f, then the subsemigroup 〈e, f, eo, fo〉 is a principally ordered band with at most 24 elements. We give a complete description of this band and show how it simplifies in natural special cases.
