Recent advancements in biotechnology forged the path for clinical trials in dish (CTiDs) to advance as a popular method of experimentation in biomedicine. CTiDs play a fundamental role in translational research through technologies such as induced pluripotent stem cells, whole genome sequencing, and organs-on-a-chip. In this review, we explore advancements that enable these CTiD biotechnologies and their applications in animal testing, disease modeling, and space radiation technologies. Furthermore, this review dissects the advantages and disadvantages of CTiDs, as well as their regulatory considerations. Background: Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection seen in endemic areas. Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is rarely reported. Purpose: To describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of musculoskeletal hydatid disease and to highlight the specific findings in the diagnosis of hydatid cysts. Material and Methods: The MRI scans of 29 cases diagnosed as musculoskeletal hydatid disease between 2000 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The localization, size, appearance (unilocular or multilocular), signal characteristics, rim sign, presence of internal septa and membrane, and gadolinium enhancement pattern of hydatid cysts were evaluated. Results: A total of 29 patients diagnosed with hydatid cyst were included in the study. Of the lesions, 18 were localized in bone and 11 were in soft tissue. The bone hydatid cysts on MRI showed heterogeneous low to intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images in the medullary bone. In 15/18 patients, there was also cortical destruction and extension into the adjacent soft tissue planes. In 8/11 cases where the cyst was located in muscle tissue, the "cyst or cysts within a cyst" appearance was observed on MRI. The rim sign was observed in 7/11 cases and the "water lily" sign was noted in 2/11 cases. Conclusion: MRI provides valuable information for the diagnosis of hydatid disease with its distinctive imaging features. Introduction Warfighters are issued hard body armor designed to defeat ballistic projectiles. The resulting backface deformation can injure different thoracoabdominal organs. Developed over decades ago, the behind armor blunt impact criterion of maximum 44 mm depth in clay continues to be used independent of armor type or impact location on the thoracoabdominal region covered by the armor. Because thoracoabdominal components have different energy absorption capabilities, their mode of failures and mechanical properties are different. These considerations underscore the lack of effectiveness of using the single standard to cover all thoracoabdominal components to represent the same level of injury risk. The objective of this pilot study is to conduct cardiac impact tests with a live animal model and analyze biomechanical injury candidate metrics for behind armor blunt trauma applications. Materials and Methods Live swine tests were conducted after obtaining approvals from the U.S. DoD. Trachea tubes. An intravenous line were introduced into the swine before administering anesthesia. Pressure transducers were inserted into lungs and aorta. An indenter simulating backface deformation profiles produced by body armor from military-relevant ballistics to human cadavers delivered impact to the heart region. The approved test protocol included 6-hour monitoring and necropsies. Indenter accelerometer signals were processed to compute the velocity and deflection, and their peak magnitudes were obtained. The deflection-time signal was normalized with respect to chest depth along the impact axis. The peak magnitude of the viscous criterion, kinetic energy, force, momentum and stiffness were obtained. Results Out of the 8 specimens, 2 were sham controls. The mean total body mass and soft tissue thickness at the impact site were 81.1 ± 4.1 kg and 3.8 ± 1.1 cm. The peak velocities ranged from 30 to 59 m/s, normalized deflections ranged from 15 to 21%, and energies ranged from 105 to 407 J. The range in momentum and stiffness were 7.0 to 13.9 kg-m/s and 22.3 to 79.9 N/m. The maximum forces and impulse data ranged from 2.9 to 11.7 kN and 1.9 to 5.8 N-s. The peak viscous criterion ranged from 2.0 to 5.3 m/s. One animal did not sustain any injuries, 2 had cardiac injuries, and others had lung and skeletal injuries. Conclusions The present study applied blunt impact loads to the live swine cardiac region and determined potential candidate injury metrics for characterization. The sample size of 6 swine produced injuries ranging from none to pure skeletal to pure organ trauma. The viscous criterion metric associated with the response of the animal demonstrated a differing pattern than other variables with increasing velocity. These findings demonstrate that our live animal experimental design can be effectively used with testing additional samples to develop behind armor blunt injury criteria for cardiac trauma in the form of risk curves. Injury criteria obtained for cardiac trauma can be used to enhance the effectiveness of the body armor, reduce morbidity and mortality, and improve warfighter readiness in combat operations. Le Fort I (LFI) osteotomy is commonly performed by orthognathic surgeons; however, postoperative changes in nasolabial morphology are of concern. Several factors influence such changes, but it is difficult to accurately predict the postoperative results. This study evaluated the three-dimensional (3D) morphological changes in the nasal region according to the different directions of maxillary movement during LFI osteotomy. Forty-one patients who underwent LFI osteotomies were included. All patients were divided into maxilla-up (Group U: 20 patients) and maxilla-forward (Group F: 21 patients) groups. Soft tissue morphologies were determined preoperatively and 3 or 6 months postoperatively using an optical 3D scanner. All datasets were evaluated in terms of volume changes in nine subregions and changes in linear measurements around the nasal area. Both groups exhibited increased nasal volumes after surgery in the order of the three upper, three central, and three lower subregions. The change in volume of the central nasal region tended to be greater in Group U than that in Group F. We evaluated 3D morphological changes in the nasal region according to the direction of maxillary movement during LFI osteotomy. Introduction: With the advancements in chemotherapy for malignant bone tumors, the number of patients eligible for limb salvage surgery has increased. Surgeons face a subsequent challenge in limb-sparing resection due to the need for reconstructing soft tissue coverage. The aim of this review is to focus on the present state of the field in these areas, highlighting recent advancements. Methods: A literature research was conducted using keywords such as "soft tissue", "integration", "reconstruction", "megaprosthesis", and "soft tissue coverage", on different databases, and following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) criteria, a total of 35 studies were selected. Results: In recent times, there has been a growing emphasis on different techniques such mesh application, allograft-prosthesis composites, allograft reconstruction, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) tube, prosthesis itself and certain metals utilized for implant coatings are used in soft tissue reconstruction. Conclusion: While tissue-engineered constructs and advancements in biological and cellular approaches have shown potential for enhancing osseointegration and interactions with soft tissues and implants, the actual clinical outcomes have frequently fallen short of expectations. Regeneration of soft tissues, especially those requiring complex vascularization, is a major challenge in the field of tissue engineering. The current types of tissue engineering scaffolds include sponges, electric spinning silk, hydrogels, and 3D printed biomaterials. Among them, hydrogels have the unique property of mimicking extracellular matrix (ECM), which can provide a relatively stable microenvironment for cellular activities and facilitate cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation; thus, have become a promising scaffold. In this paper, we present a review of the commonly used types of natural hydrogels and their applications as scaffolds in tissue vascularization. First, we enumerate the importance and advantages of several types of commonly used hydrogels of natural origin in terms of fabricating vascularized tissues or organs. Second, we discuss two different formation modalities of blood vessels, as well as natural hydrogel-based vascularization strategies, including carrying growth factors, stem cell delivery, special scaffold structures and pharmaceutical-enhanced strategy. In addition, we describe the crosslinking strategies of hydrogels as scaffolds for regeneration of vascularized soft tissues, as well as the factors affecting it. Ultrasound (US) is the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of superficial palpable lesions. A large proportion of these lesions have characteristic sonographic appearance and can be confidently diagnosed with US without the need for biopsy or other intervention. The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) recently published a Consensus Conference Statement on superficial soft tissue masses. The goal of this manuscript is (a) to serve as a sonographic pictorial review for palpable lesions based on the SRU statement, (b) present the typical sonographic features of palpable lesions that can be confidently diagnosed with US, and (c) provide an overview of other palpable lesions with a framework to interpret the US studies and advise on appropriate further management. Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is rare and can be located anywhere but most commonly the bone and muscles of the spine, pelvis, then the lower limbs. Imaging is essential for its diagnosis, performing the pre-therapeutic assessment, guiding possible percutaneous treatments, and providing post-therapeutic follow-up. Musculoskeletal hydatidosis can take several forms that may suggest other infections and tumors or pseudotumors. MRI and CT are superior for its diagnosis but ultrasound and radiography remain the most accessible examinations in developing countries where this parasitosis is endemic. In this review, we provide an overview of this disease and describe its different imaging patterns in soft tissue and bone involvement that should be sought to support the diagnosis. Objectives: The objective of this study was to enhance the visibility of soft tissues on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using a CycleGAN network trained on CT images. Methods: Training and evaluation of the CycleGAN were conducted using CT and CBCT images collected from Aichi Gakuin University (α facility) and Osaka Dental University (β facility). Synthesized images (sCBCT) output by the CycleGAN network were evaluated by comparing them with the original images (oCBCT) and CT images, and assessments were made using histogram analysis and human scoring of soft-tissue anatomical structures and cystic lesions. Results: The histogram analysis showed that on sCBCT, soft-tissue anatomical structures showed significant shifts in voxel intensity toward values resembling those on CT, with the mean values for all structures approaching those of CT and the specialists' visibility scores being significantly increased. However, improvement in the visibility of cystic lesions was limited. Conclusions: Image synthesis using CycleGAN significantly improved the visibility of soft tissue on CBCT, with this improvement being particularly notable from the submandibular region to the floor of the mouth. Although the effect on the visibility of cystic lesions was limited, there is potential for further improvement through refinement of the training method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate and compare the soft tissue chin (STC) thickness at different chin levels with different vertical growth patterns among the adult patients in a sample from Egyptian population. Patients and methods: One hundred eighty pretreated lateral cephalograms of Egyptian orthodontic patients of both sexes with class Ι malocclusion (ANB 2°–4° according to Aboul-Azm and colleagues) and different vertical skeletal patterns. With age ranging from 16 to 22 years old. The enrolled cases were divided into three groups based on their vertical skeletal patterns using angular measurements of Steiner analysis (SN-GoGn). High angle SN-MP angle more than 37, low angle SN-MP angle less than 27, and average angle SN-MP angle 27–37. The STC thicknesses were measured at pogonion (Pog), gnathion (Gn), and menton (Me). Group differences were evaluated with two-way analysis of variance and Students t test. The Pearson product moment correlation gauged associations between parameters. Results: The STC values were greater in men than women (P < 0.04) and were smaller in the high group (9.06 ± 1.28 mm) than in all other groups at Gn (mean values 20.672 m; P = 0.001) and at Me (high group 8.22 ± 1.94 mm; other groups 10.18 ± 3.56 mm, STC 9.11 ± 2.37 mm; P = 0.001). Conclusion: The STC thickness had the highest measurements in the hypodivergent group at pogonion, gnathion, and menton and the lowest being in the hyperdivergent group. This differential thickness warrants focused research as it implies that it is possible. The STC thickness apparently adapts to severe hyperdivergence through increased stretching of the STC thickness with progressive increase in facial divergence. The possibility that more advancement genioplasty to achieve better chin projection may be needed in patients with severe hyperdivergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: High-energy heavy ions generated by accelerators utilized in industrial and medical uses. Ar, C, and He heavy ions have been used in the treatment of cancer. In this research, it was tried to calculate the radioactive elements production in healthy tissues around tumors by heavy ions spallation process in the direct usage of highenergy ions for the treatment of cancerous tumors. Materials and Methods: The radioactive elements production in body tissues irradiated with heavy ions was calculated by Monte Carlo N Particle X-version (MCNPX) code based on the Monte Carlo method. The F8 tally card with FT8 command was utilized to derive the activation and spallation data in the range of Z1 to Z2 atomic numbers. Results: A wide range of radioactive elements was created in healthful tissues in Ne, C, Ar, and He heavy ions therapy. Results show that 10Be,14C, 26Al, 36Cl, 39Ar, 40K, 39Ar, 32Si, 22Na, and 36Cl radioactive materials were produced for high-energy heavy ions spallation in healthy soft tissue. Conclusion: The results of this research show that due to using directly high-energy ions to treat internal tumors, healthy soft tissue is activated. Also, by irradiated Ne, C, Ar, and He ions, the radioactive elements are produced with high gains and long half-lives. Therefore, in the therapy of cancerous tumors with high-energy ions, due to the production of radioactive agents, healthy tissues are at high risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to assess clinical and radiographic outcomes, including implant survival, marginal bone loss, and patient satisfaction, in individuals with severe bone atrophy treated using a newly developed system of short and extra-short implants. A total of 44 implants (37 short and 7 extra-short) were placed with immediate loading in 11 patients. The patients were followed up at between 6 and 24 months. Bone changes, keratinized mucosa, bleeding on probing, probing depth, crown-to-implant ratio, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. An implant survival and success rate of 100% was observed. The peri-implant bone condition showed no significant associations between marginal bone loss (MBL) and gingival recession. In extra-short implants, the crown-to-implant ratio did not affect MBL in the evaluated times. However, short implants showed a statistically significant inverse correlation between mesial measurement and crown-to-implant ratio (p = 0.006) and between distal measurement and crown-to-implant ratio (p = 0.004) over six months. Plaque was present in the mesiobuccal regions in 38.64% of the implants, with extra-short implants having the highest relative frequency (71.4%). Bleeding was observed in 18.9% of the short implants in the mesiolingual region and 14.3% of the extra-short implants. There was a statistically significant association between bleeding on probing in the mesiobuccal region and the type of implant (p = 0.026). The analysis of probing depth showed no difference between the types of implants. Within the limits of this study, short and extra-short implants presented similar clinical and radiographic behavior of soft and hard tissues in the evaluated times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives This study aimed to determine the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors in the phenotypic variation of the soft tissue facial profile during the mixed dentition and the permanent dentition stages. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, standardized facial profile photographs of 139 twin pairs (55 monozygotic and 84 dizygotic) were obtained from archival records at the Adelaide Dental School. Photographic analysis used 12 angular and 14 linear facial profile measurements from the mixed dentition (7–11 years) to the permanent dentition (12–17 years) stages. A genetic analysis was performed using a univariate structural equation model adhering to the normal assumptions of a twin model. Results In the mixed dentition stage, the additive genetic (A) and unique environment (E) model, AE model, was the most parsimonious in explaining the observed phenotypic variance for all 26 facial traits with the narrow-sense heritability estimates ranging between 0.38 and 0.79. In the permanent dentition, the AE model was the most parsimonious for 20 out of 26 traits, however, the variance of six traits, particularly those in the lower third of the face, was best explained by the shared environmental and unique environmental factors. Limitations This study exclusively included twins of European ancestry. Conclusions The soft tissue facial profile demonstrated dynamic genetic and environmental influences with a greater additive genetic influence during the mixed dentition and the early stages of the permanent dentition. Myoepithelioma is an exceptionally rare tumor, primarily arising in glandular tissues but occasionally found in soft tissues, including the hand. Its occurrence in the hand is particularly uncommon, presenting unique clinical challenges due to the limited number of documented cases and the unusual location. We conducted a literature review in June 2024, with the aim to evaluate the current understanding of hand myoepithelioma, recent diagnostic advances, treatment options, and the diverse presentations of this neoplasm. Articles confirmed that patients present with a painless, slow-growing mass in the hand, often misdiagnosed as more common soft tissue tumors like lipomas or fibromas. Imaging, particularly MRI and ultrasound, aids in assessing the tumor, but definitive diagnosis relies on histopathology, including immunophenotyping. Managing spindle cell myoepithelioma in the hand requires a multidisciplinary approach, with surgical excision being the primary treatment. Achieving clear margins is critical yet challenging due to the hand's complex anatomy. In some cases, adjuvant therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy may be necessary. The prognosis depends on factors like tumor size, location, and the success of surgical removal, with complete excision typically leading to a favorable outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a novel approach to tissue regeneration is emerging as a valuable tool to enhance healing in numerous dental and oral surgery procedures. The aim of present study is to evaluate the efficacy of Platelet Rich Fibrin on soft tissue healing in the experimental group in contrast to the control group and to compare the rate of soft tissue healing between the two groups and to assess the presence or absence of infection. 30 patients (15 patients each as case and control smokers) following tooth extraction. The patients were split into two groups, 15 patients in each Group A: Experimental group: Immediately after extraction, PRF was placed and wound secured with sutures. Group B: Control group: Immediately following extraction, the wound was secured with sutures. Follow up was done on day 3, day 7 and day 15. Both the groups showed statistically significant healing over time (days 3 through 15). Healing on days 3 and 7, between both the groups was not statistically significant and showed no difference. However, on day 15, the healing in the case group was much better. In conclusion, this study has shown the efficacy of PRF in wound healing following tooth extraction in smokers. In fixed prosthodontic treatment of the maxillary anterior region, where high esthetics are required, it is crucial not only to achieve a successful prosthesis but also to form symmetrical and natural gingiva. To achieve esthetic gingiva, it is necessary to adjust the subgingival contour of the temporary prosthesis or to modify the base of pontic. However, during the transition from temporary to definitive prosthesis, the conventional method of removing the temporary prosthesis and taking an impression after gingival retraction often fails to accurately reproduce the gingival profile. In such cases, the gingiva is arbitrarily trimmed on the model to fabricate the definitive prosthesis, which reduces the predictability of esthetic treatment outcomes. This case report introduces methods to transfer the subgingival contour and the pontic base formed with the temporary prosthesis to the final model and definitive prosthesis through two cases. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC)originates from the epithelial cells of the intrahepatic bile ducts, with insidious onset and strong invasiveness, and most of the cases are found in the advanced stage, with extremely poor prognosis. In advanced stages, distant metastases to the lungs, bones, and brain are common, but distant soft tissue (subcutaneous and skeletal muscle) and breast metastases are rare, and simultaneous metastases to all three rare sites had not been reported. We report a 69-year-old woman with right upper abdominal pain who underwent a plain and enhanced CT scan of the upper abdomen, which revealed an intrahepatic space-occupying lesion, as well as subcutaneous and peritoneal nodules in the abdomen. To further evaluate the presence of other metastases, an 18F-FDG PET/CT scan was performed, which showed abnormal FDG uptake in the liver, peritoneum, left upper femur, right breast, subcutaneous tissues of the thoracic and abdominal regions, and skeletal muscle, while the corresponding CT densities of part of the skeletal muscle and the left upper femur did not show any significant abnormality. Pathologic confirmation of ICC with multiple metastases was obtained by puncture biopsy of the liver and subcutaneous nodes. This case demonstrates the advantages of 18F-FDG PET/CT in comprehensively evaluating systemic metastasis of ICC and detecting occult metastases, which is of great significance in its clinical diagnosis and staging.

An 84-year-old lady presented with 1 day history of sudden onset generalized abdominal pain, fevers, and peritonism. Computed tomography was suggestive of a mid-small bowel perforation associated with a distal ovoid soft tissue density structure without pneumobilia. An urgent laparotomy demonstrated two areas of jejunal diverticula necrosis and perforation associated with a 3 cm luminal mass in the proximal ileum, and proximal small bowel dilatation. A 100 cm small bowel resection incorporating the mass and perforated jejunal diverticula and primary stapled anastomosis were performed. Histopathology surprisingly demonstrated cholelithiasis consistent with a gallstone ileus and necrotic, perforated jejunal diverticulitis. The patient had no recurrent symptoms at 6 weeks follow-up. The authors report an uncommon and unexpected occurrence of small bowel diverticulitis perforation as a rare complication of gallstone ileus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 27-year-old male with insidious right arm swelling was diagnosed with a hematoma secondary to a partial biceps tear, later identified as a rhabdomyosarcoma. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) may present with misleading patient histories and nonspecific symptoms, resulting in misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. One of the classic masqueraders of soft tissue sarcomas is hematomas secondary to trauma. Obtaining a prudent history with careful scrutiny of appropriate imaging often helps establish the correct diagnosis. Ultimately, tissue biopsy can resolve any ambiguous cases and prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the performance of machine learning-augmented MRI-based radiomics models for predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in soft tissue sarcomas.MethodsForty-four subjects were identified retrospectively from patients who received NAC at our institution for pathologically proven soft tissue sarcomas. Only subjects who had both a baseline MRI prior to initiating chemotherapy and a post-treatment scan at least 2 months after initiating chemotherapy and prior to surgical resection were included. 3D ROIs were used to delineate whole-tumor volumes on pre- and post-treatment scans, from which 1708 radiomics features were extracted. Delta-radiomics features were calculated by subtraction of baseline from post-treatment values and used to distinguish treatment response through univariate analyses as well as machine learning-augmented radiomics analyses.ResultsThough only 4.74% of variables overall reached significance at p ≤ 0.05 in univariate analyses, Laws Texture Energy (LTE)-derived metrics represented 46.04% of all such features reaching statistical significance. ROC analyses similarly failed to predict NAC response, with AUCs of 0.40 (95% CI 0.22-0.58) and 0.44 (95% CI 0.26-0.62) for RF and AdaBoost, respectively.ConclusionOverall, while our result was not able to separate NAC responders from non-responders, our analyses did identify a subset of LTE-derived metrics that show promise for further investigations. Future studies will likely benefit from larger sample size constructions so as to avoid the need for data filtering and feature selection techniques, which have the potential to significantly bias the machine learning procedures.

Soft tissue elasticity is directly related to different stages of diseases and can be used for tissue identification during minimally invasive procedures. By palpating a tissue with a robot in a minimally invasive fashion force-displacement curves can be acquired. However, force-displacement curves strongly depend on the tool geometry which is often complex in the case of medical tools. Hence, a tool calibration procedure is desired to directly map force-displacement curves to the corresponding tissue elasticity.We present an experimental setup for calibrating medical tools with a robot. First, we propose to estimate the elasticity of gelatin phantoms by spherical indentation with a state-of-the-art contact model. We estimate force-displacement curves for different gelatin elasticities and temperatures. Our experiments demonstrate that gelatin elasticity is highly dependent on temperature, which can lead to an elasticity offset if not considered. Second, we propose to use a more complex material model, e.g., a neural network, that can be trained with the determined elasticities. Considering the temperature of the gelatin sample we can represent different elasticities per phantom and thereby increase our training data.We report elasticity values ranging from 10 to 40 kPa for a 10% gelatin phantom, depending on temperature.

Abstract Ballistic impacts on human thorax without penetration can produce severe injuries or even death of the carrier. Soft tissue finite element models must capture the non-linear elasticity and strain-rate dependence to accurately estimate the dynamic human mechanical response. The objective of this work is the calibration of a visco-hyperelastic model for soft tissue simulants. Material model parameters have been calculated by fitting experimental stress–strain relations obtained from the literature using genetic algorithms. Several parametric analyses have been carried out during the definition of the optimization algorithm. In this way, we were able to study different optimization strategies to improve the convergence and accuracy of the final result. Finally, the genetic algorithm has been applied to calibrate two different soft tissue simulants: ballistic gelatin and styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene. The algorithm is able to calculate the constants for visco-hyperelastic constitutive equations with high accuracy. Regarding synthetic stress–strain curves, a short computational time has been shown when using the semi-free strategy, leading to high precision results in stress–strain curves. The algorithm developed in this work, whose code is included as supplementary material for the reader use, can be applied to calibrate visco-hyperelastic parameters from stress–strain relations under different strain rates. The semi-free relaxation time strategy has shown to obtain more accurate results and shorter convergence times than the other strategies studied. It has been also shown that the understanding of the constitutive models and the complexity of the stress–strain objective curves is crucial for the accuracy of the method.

Introduction: Foreign body (FB) injuries constitute an important part of admission to emergency and orthopedic clinics in daily practice. The localization and removal of FBs can be difficult. Ultrasound (USG) plays an important role in the localization of FBs. In this study, we aimed to present the results of patients who underwent US-guided FB extraction. Methods: Fifty-seven patients who were admitted to the emergency service and orthopedic outpatient clinic due to FB trauma to soft tissue were retrospectively evaluated. USG-guided removal was performed under local anesthesia. The number, size, shape, structure, distance to the skin, and integrity of the FB were determined using USG guidance. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with Roles-Maudsley score. Results: The mean duration of surgery was 7 min (range; 5 to 20 minutes), and the mean incision size was 11 mm (range; 5 to 25 mm). Forty-seven of the patients underwent an outpatient procedure and were discharged on the same day. No postoperative complications were observed. Fifty one of 57 (89.5%) were very satisfied with the surgery. Conclusion: Consequently, USG-guided FB extraction is a safe, fast, and comfortable option for the patient and the physician. Orthopedic physicians should receive USG training starting from their assistantship, and its use in daily practice should be increased.

Soft tissue myxomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms typically found in the intramuscular components of the proximal extremities. However, soft tissue myxomas in the chest wall are rare. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman with soft tissue myxoma who presented with a slowly growing, palpable lump on her left anterior chest wall that has been present for several years. Mammography revealed an oval, circumscribed, and hyperdense mass in the retromammary fat layer of the upper inner quadrant of the left breast. Ultrasonography revealed an oval, circumscribed, and hypoechoic mass with internal echoes and multiple microcystic spaces. A triangular hyperechoic area adjacent to the pole of the mass and peripheral hyperechoic rim were also detected. The patient underwent surgical excision and was diagnosed with soft tissue myxoma with subcutaneous manifestation.

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor (OFMT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor of uncertain histogenesis with intermediate malignant potential presenting commonly in the fifth to sixth decade in the proximal limb and limb girdle. A 65-year-old male patient presented with a slow-growing gluteal mass. Wide local excision performed showed a well-defined tumor in the subcutaneous plane with a partially hard outer shell. Microscopy showed a moderately cellular tumor having cords and nests of round to ovoid cells with moderate cytoplasm and bland nuclei embedded in a myxo-hyaline matrix. Background: The changes in the elasticity of the abdominal skin, subcutaneous tissues and muscles after lipoabdominoplasty are still unknown. The aim of this study was to provide an objective assessment of tissue elasticity after lipoabdominoplasty using ultrasound elastography. Methods: A total of 21 female patients (31–41 years old) who underwent lipoabdominoplasty from Oct 2019 to Mar 2022 were included in this retrospective study. The elastography values of the skin, subcutaneous tissues and abdominal muscles were obtained with the ultrasound shear wave elasticity imaging system pre-operation (Pre) and 6 months post-operation (Post) at four different points. Results: Twenty-one female patients were included. The elasticity of the abdominal skin, subcutaneous tissues, rectus abdominis and external oblique abdominis significantly increased at 6 months post-operation. The improvements in abdominal soft tissue elasticity were not uniform across the examined points. Conclusions: Significant changes in the elasticity of the abdominal skin, subcutaneous tissues and muscles were observed after lipoabdominoplasty. Ultrasound elastographic assessment was objective and feasible for evaluating the effect of lipoabdominoplasty on abdominal soft tissue. ABSTRACT Background Methods Results Conclusion The treatment of the medial infraorbital region also termed the tear trough has become increasingly popular by the use of soft tissue fillers in a minimally invasive approach using a cannula.A total of 246 tear troughs were injected and investigated originating from 123 study participants. The clinical outcome was evaluated 6 months after the treatment by independent observers based on standardized frontal images and the procedure was documented by ultrasound imaging.On average, 0.26 (0.1) cc [range: 0.08–0.32] of soft tissue filler material was injected per tear trough. Tear trough depth was before the treatment rated as 2.12 (0.4), whereas after the treatment it was 1.15 (0.4) (p < 0.001). Hyperpigmentation score was 2.19 (0.4) before the treatment, whereas after the treatment it was 1.31 (0.5) (p < 0.001). Intraorbital fat pseudo‐prolapse severity was rated before the treatment 1.88 (0.7), whereas it was rated after the treatment 1.14 (0.3) (p < 0.001). Wrinkle severity of the lower eyelid was rated before the treatment 1.51 (0.6), whereas it was rated after the treatment 1.12 (0.3) (p < 0.001).The results of this retrospectively investigated case series revealed that the conducted injection technique for treating the tear trough for medial infraorbital hollowing with a cannula provided statistically significant clinical improvement with a limited adverse events profile. Context: Children sustain facial skeletal and soft-tissue injuries, which are often seen in the preschool age; however, severe facial injuries involving facial bones occur in ages above 11 years. There have been several postulated reasons for the reduction in the incidence of skeletal fractures in children. These include sutural pliability of pediatric facial bones, increased subcutaneous fat, and a greater ratio of cranial to facial bones. Aims: The study aimed to report our institutional experience of the pattern of presentation in pediatric maxillofacial trauma and report its main etiologies. Methods and Materials: Clinical and demographic information was retrieved from the maxillofacial registers, day clinics, and pathology registers. The etiology of the trauma and associated injuries were also noted. Statistical Analysis: Descriptive statistics were performed on demographic variables such as age, gender, and location of trauma. Categorical variables were analyzed in frequencies and proportions. Association analyses across variables were done using student t -test, ANOVA, and Pearson's Chi-square after normality test had been conducted. Dunn's test and Tukey's post-hoc analysis were conducted after significant observations. Results: The mean age observed in the study was 7.3 years ± 5.3 SD (range: 2.6 months–16 years). There was a slight male predilection with 58.6%. Falls were the most common etiology in the ≤5-years group. RTC accounted for most injuries in children above 11 years. Soft-tissue-only injuries were observed in 51.4% of all cases. In facial bone fractures, mandibular fractures accounted for 40% of all cases. Conclusion: Male children experienced the greatest impact from maxillofacial trauma. The primary factor contributing to this was falls among preschool children. Ultrasound imaging (USI) is the gold standard in the clinical diagnosis of thyroid diseases. Compared with two-dimensional (2D) USI, three-dimensional (3D) USI could provide more structural information. However, the unstable pressure generated by the hand-hold ultrasound probe scanning can cause tissue deformation, especially in soft tissues such as the thyroid. The deformation is manifested as tissue structure being compressed in 2D USI, which results in structural discontinuity in 3D USI. Furthermore, multiple scans apply pressure in different directions to the tissue, which will cause relative displacement between the 3D images obtained from multiple thyroid scans. In this work, we proposed a framework to minimize the influence of the variation of pressure in thyroid 3D USI. To correct pressure artifacts in a single scanning sequence, an adaptive method to smooth the position of the 2D ultrasound (US) image sequence is adopted before performing volumetric reconstruction. To build a whole 3D US image including both sides of the thyroid gland, an iterative closest point (ICP) based registration pipeline is adopted to eliminate the relative displacement caused by different pressure directions. Our proposed method was validated by in vivo experiments, including healthy volunteers and volunteers with thyroid nodules at different grading levels. The thyroid gland and nodule are rendered intelligently in the whole scanning region to facilitate the observation of 3D USI results by the doctor. BACKGROUND: Early complications in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) associated with modern robotics platforms integrated with digital balancing technology have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to compare 90-day complication rates between a manual technique and a modern robotic-assisted ligament balancing TKA platform. METHODS: 895 primary TKA procedures from a single surgeon were retrospectively reviewed (614 manual TKA, 281 using a modern robotics platform with an integrated digitally controlled ligament balancing device). Post-operative complications within the 90-day episode of care were recorded by the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative. Differences in complication rates between techniques were further divided into inpatient hospital, outpatient hospital, and ambulatory surgery center (ASC) cohorts. RESULTS: In the pooled hospital cohort and inpatient hospital cohort, 'Return to OR' was significantly lower for the robotic assisted group (1.3% vs 5.2% and 0% vs 4.9%, respectively, p < 0.0370). Specifically, the need for manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) was reduced for the robotics group (0.0% vs 2.5%, p = 0.0352). No differences in overall complication rate or cause of complication was found between manual and robotics cases for the hospital outpatient and ASC cohorts (p ⩾ 0.68). CONCLUSION: Within the hospital setting, robotic assisted ligament balancing technology was associated with reduced 90-day postoperative complications for 'Return to OR' and MUA. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) and photobiomodulation (PBM) applications, which have been repeatedly reported to be superior to control groups, in terms of pain, soft tissue and bone healing in tooth extraction sockets. Materials and methods: This double-blind, randomized clinical study was completed with 34 patients, who had an indication for extraction of their bilaterally impacted teeth. The right and left teeth of the patients were randomly divided into L-PRF and PBM groups. L-PRF group was treated with the blood product centrifuged for 12 min at 2700 rpm, and the PBM group was treated with a diode laser at different points for 60 s with a wavelength of 940 nm in repeated sessions. Postoperative pain was evaluated using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), soft tissue healing with Landry Index (LI), tissue healing in the distal region of mandibular second molar by probing depth measurement, and bone healing via panoramic x-ray using the Image J program. Results: No statistically significant difference was found for any variable compared between the groups. Conclusion: L-PRF and PBM applications provide similar support in the healing of extraction sockets. Nevertheless, the advantages and disadvantages of both methods determine their usage areas. Background: Trabectedin is an antineoplastic drug approved for patients (pts) with advanced soft tissue sarcomas (STS). Interestingly, the radiological evaluation of response during trabectedin therapy is peculiar. Methods: The aim of this single-center retrospective study is to analyze the concordance of response assessment according to RECIST compared with Choi criteria in patients with STS treated with trabectedin between 2009 and 2020 at Regina Elena National Cancer Institute in Rome. Results: We present the preliminary data collected in the last 2 months (mos) on 37 pts who received the diagnosis between 2015 and 2020, with a median age of 52.5 years (range 32–78). The median number of trabectedin cycles administered was four (range 2–50) for a median follow up of 5.83 months (range 1–60). Histological subtypes of STS were five (13.5%) leiomyosarcoma, 14 (37.8%) liposarcoma, nine (24.3%) undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, three (8.1%) synovial sarcoma, and six (16.2%) other rare histological subtypes. Eight pts (21.6%) received trabectedin in the first line setting, 21 (56.8%) in the second line, and seven (18.9%) received it in subsequent lines. One pt received trabectedin as neoadjuvant therapy in a clinical trial (ISG-STS 1001). Median progression-free survival was 3.6 months (CI95% 2.7–4.6); median overall survival was 34.3 months (CI95% 0–75.4). The radiological responses were evaluated with both RECIST and Choi criteria; responses matched in 33 pts (89.2%) but not in four (10.8%). The best responses obtained according to RECIST criteria were two (5.4%) partial response (PR), 13 (35.1%) stable disease (SD), and 22 (59.5%) progressive disease (PD). Instead, two (5.4%), 13 (35.1%), and 22 (59.5%) pts obtained PR, SD, and PD respectively, according to Choi criteria. Cohen’s kappa coefficient of concordance was 0.792 (p-value <0.002). A specialized radiologist performed all imaging examinations using a dedicated workstation in the same center. Conclusion: In this first analysis, the concordance between RECIST and Choi assessments demonstrates no statistically significant difference. Responses did not match for four pts. Recent research in the medical field has increasingly focused on tissue repair, tumor detection, and associated therapeutic techniques. A significant challenge in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is the loss of direct tactile sensation by surgeons, as they cannot physically feel the organs they operate on. Tactile feedback enhances patient safety by tissue differentiation and reducing inadvertent damage risks. Addressing this challenge, this study introduces a novel tactile sensor designed for compliance detection to enhance tactile feedback in MIS. The sensor operates on a 2-Degree-of-Freedom (2-DOF) vibration absorber system, utilizing a piezoelectric actuator with a calibrated stiffness of 188 N/m. It interprets tissue stiffness regarding a spring constant, Ko, and measures changes in soft tissue stiffness by analyzing variations in the vibration absorber frequency, specifically at the frequency which causes the first mass to exhibit zero amplitude. The effectiveness of this sensor was evaluated through tests on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) specimens, which were engineered to replicate varying stiffness found in human organ tissues. Young's modulus of these specimens was determined using a universal testing machine, showing a range from 10.12 to 226.89 kPa. Additionally, the sensor was applied to measure the stiffness of various chicken tissues - liver, heart, breast, and gizzard with respective Young's moduli being 1.97, 9.47, 19.55, and 96.36 kPa. This sensor successfully differentiated between tissue types non-invasively, without requiring substantial deformation or penetration of the tissues. Given its piezoelectric nature, the sensor also holds significant potential for miniaturization through Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems technology (MEMS), broadening its applicability in surgical environments. Objective: To assess submental-cervical soft tissue changes after en bloc mandibular U-shaped osteotomy and examine alterations in the anterior belly of digastric muscle (ABDM). Methods: A retrospective study analyzed 20 patients who underwent en bloc mandibular U-shaped osteotomy from 2018 to 2023. Preoperative (Tp) and long-term follow-up (Tf) CT data were collected for analysis, measuring mandibular volume, soft tissue thickness at menton (Mes) and cervicale (C), and ABDM parameters (length, cross-sectional area (CSA), volume, distance from centroid point to the mandibular margin). Correlation analyses were performed to investigate the connection between soft tissue thickness changes, ABDM changes, and mandibular osteotomy volume. Results: Long-term follow-up revealed a significant increase in soft tissue thickness at the Mes and C points after U-shaped mandibular osteotomy, especially at the C point. The adaptive length of ABDM decreased, CSA increased, and volume decreased, but the ABDM centroid point shifted downward relative to the mandibular margin, indicating drooping protrusion. The increment of soft tissue thickness was moderately positively correlated with the amount of osteotomy, and the decrement of ABDM length and volume were slightly positively correlated with the amount of osteotomy. Conclusion: The degree of soft tissue relaxation after U-shaped osteotomy is related to the extent of osteotomy. Notably, the protrusion of ABDM relative to the mandibular margin affects submental-cervical contour aesthetics. Prior to U-shaped osteotomy, it is crucial to assess the soft tissue condition of the patient's lower face, and the individualized design of the osteotomy volume should be carried out cautiously and safely. In minimally invasive surgery, the tendency for human tissue to adhere to the electrosurgical scalpel can complicate procedures and elevate the risk of medical accidents. Consequently, the development of an electrosurgical scalpel with an anti-sticking coating is critically important. Drawing inspiration from nature, we identified that the leaves of Setaria Virids exhibit exceptional non-stick properties. Utilizing this natural surface texture as a model, we designed and fabricated a specialized anti-sticking surface for electrosurgical scalpels. Employing nanosecond laser direct writing ablation technology, we created a micro-nano textured surface on the high-frequency electrosurgical scalpel that mimics the structure found on Setaria Virids leaves. Subsequently, a TiO2 coating was deposited onto the ablated scalpel surface via magnetron sputtering, followed by plasma-induced hydrophobic modification and treatment with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) to enhance the surface's affinity for silicone oil, thereby constructing a self-lubricating and anti-sticking surface. The spreading behavior of deionized water, absolute ethanol, and dimethyl silicone oil on this textured surface is investigated to confirm the effectiveness of the self-lubrication mechanism. Furthermore, the sticking force and quality are compared between the anti-sticking electrosurgical scalpel and a standard high-frequency electrosurgical scalpel to demonstrate the efficacy of the nanosecond laser-ablated micro-nano texture in preventing sticking. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the impact of soft tissue structure on the psychosocial effects of malocclusions in women and men. Material and Methods: The severity of malocclusion was determined in 84 individuals with a Class I skeletal pattern. The Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire was administered to determine the malocclusion perceptions of the patients. Arnett's soft tissue analysis was performed to determine the soft tissue structure. The difference between the sociodemographic factors and severity of malocclusion averages of men and women was statistically examined. Subsequently, the impact of Arnett's soft tissue analysis parameters on the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire scores of each gender was evaluated. Results: No statistically significant association was observed between women and men related to the sociodemographic factors and the severity of malocclusions. The number of Arnett's soft tissue analysis parameters affecting the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire scores was higher in men than women. Women were more psychologically affected by malocclusions, while men were affected by soft tissue structure changes, and women were affected by dental factors. Background: Fine‐needle aspiration specimens from soft tissue tumors are complicated by lack of tissue architecture and limited material for ancillary testing. There are little data on the feasibility of next‐generation sequencing techniques for fusion detection on soft tissue cytology specimens. This study explored the role of an anchored multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)‐based gene fusion assay in aiding the diagnosis of mesenchymal neoplasms on cytology samples. Methods: The laboratory information system was queried for cytology specimens that had undergone testing by anchored multiplex PCR. After exclusion of epithelial and hematolymphoid neoplasms, clinical and pathologic information was collected on the remaining cases. Results: There were 1609 cytology specimens tested with anchored multiplex PCR. Of these, 48 (3%) were cytology specimens from mesenchymal tumors. Anchored multiplex PCR was positive for a reportable fusion transcript in 14 of 48 cases (29%); there was no fusion detected in 32 cases (67%), and there was insufficient tissue for analysis in two cases (4%). The detectable fusion partners included ALK (n = 4), STAT6 (n = 4), EWSR1 (n = 3), and one each of SS18, YAP1, and PHF1. Of the cases in which a fusion partner was detected, eight of 14 were disease‐defining on cytology preparation, and six of 14 provided molecular confirmation of a metastatic focus of a previously diagnosed tumor. Conclusions: The anchored, multiplex PCR‐based gene fusion assay is a powerful orthogonal tool in helping diagnose mesenchymal neoplasms on cytology specimens. The material obtained for cytologic analysis yields sufficient quality/quantity of tissue in the majority of cases tested. Background/Aim: Benign and tumor-like lesions of the hindfoot and ankle are common, whereas malignant entities are rare. Accurate evaluation and timely management of these lesions can be challenging, making it crucial to understand their incidence and anatomic localization. This study retrospectively analyzed the distribution of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors in the hindfoot and ankle. Patients and Methods: This study included patient data from a single center, such as age, sex, histologic diagnosis, and anatomic location over a 12.5 year period. Results: Of the 105 cases reviewed, 19 cases (18.1%) were osseous lesions and 86 cases (81.9%) were soft tissue lesions. The latter were divided into 77 benign and 9 malignant cases, resulting in an overall malignancy rate of 8.6%. The most common osseous lesion was the intraosseous ganglion (n=12). The majority of benign soft tissue lesions (75.3%) were located in the hindfoot, with TGCT, schwannoma, and ganglion cysts being the most common types. The nine malignant cases were distributed among seven entities and were evenly distributed among both regions and sexes. Malignant cases had a higher mean age (59.2 years) compared to benign cases (40.8 years; p=0.001). Conclusion: Tumors, tumor-like lesions, and pseudotumors represent an important aspect of ankle pathology. The majority of focal masses and swellings are benign soft tissue or osseous lesions, but malignant entities can occur and may be mistaken for benign conditions. Experimental protocols are fundamental for quantifying the mechanical behaviour of soft tissue. These data are crucial for advancing the understanding of soft tissue mechanics, developing and calibrating constitutive models, and informing the development of more accurate and predictive computational simulations and artificial intelligence tools. This paper offers a comprehensive review of experimental tests conducted on soft aortic tissues, employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, based on the Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE, Google Scholar and PubMed databases. This study includes a detailed overview of the test method protocols, providing insights into practical methodologies, specimen preparation and full-field measurements. The review also briefly discusses the post-processing methods applied to extract material parameters from experimental data. Background: The diagnostic work-up of musculoskeletal tumors is a multifactorial process. During the early phase, differential diagnoses are made using basic radiological imaging. In this phase, part of the decision making is based on the patient's age, as well as the incidence and predilection sites of different entities. Unfortunately, this information is based on older and fragmented data. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated all soft-tissue and bone tumors around the knee in children treated at our tertiary center in the last 20 years, with the aim of verifying the data used today. Methods: In this retrospective study, the databank of our tertiary center was used to give an overview of treated tumors around the knee in children. Results: We were able to include 224 children with bone and soft-tissue tumors around the knee. The cohort consisted of 184 bone tumors, of which 144 were benign and 40 malignant. The 40 soft-tissue tumors comprised 30 benign and 10 malignant masses. The most common lesions were osteochondromas (88) in the bone and tenosynovial giant-cell tumors (12) in the soft tissue. Objective: To identify the different uses and modalities of digital technologies to diagnose, plan and monitor peri‐implant soft tissue conditions and aesthetics. Methods: A comprehensive narrative review of pertinent literature was conducted, critically appraising key digital technologies that may assist peri‐implant soft tissue augmentation and assessment. An electronic search on four databases including studies published prior to 1st July 2023 was performed and supplemented by a manual search. Results: Predominantly, tools such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanning (iOS), intraoral ultrasonography and digital spectrophotometry were commonly to assess and monitor peri‐implant soft tissues. The main clinical and research applications included: (i) initial assessment of mucosal thickness, supra‐crestal tissue height and keratinized mucosa width, (ii) evaluation of peri‐implant soft tissue health and inflammation, (iii) monitoring profilometric changes and midfacial mucosal margin stability over time and (iv) aesthetic evaluation through colour assessment. While evidence for some digital tools may be limited, the integration of digital technologies into peri‐implant soft tissue management holds great promise. These technologies offer improved precision, comfort and speed in assessment, benefiting both patients and clinicians. Conclusion: As digital technologies progress, their full potential in peri‐implant soft tissue augmentation and their value will become more evident with ongoing research. Methods of modelling the female torso during physical activity often neglect the position and movement of the breast. This novel investigation compares three female torso modelling approaches that differ in complexity (integrated breast, fixed breast, dynamic breast) to determine the effect on spinal joint moments during running and jumping. The commonly used integrated breast model distributed breast mass within the torso, the fixed breast model attached the mass of the breasts to fixed positions on the anterior of the torso, and a new dynamic breast model enabled relative motion between the breasts and anterior torso. Key findings demonstrated minimal differences in lumbar spine moments (<0.05 Nm/kg; 4%) between integrated breast and fixed breast models but greater differences, up to 0.86 Nm/kg (68%) during running and 0.89 Nm/kg (82%) during jumping, when breast motion was included. Thoracic spine moments revealed similar patterns with minimal differences (<0.05 Nm/kg; 11%) between integrated breast and fixed breast models and greater differences, up to 0.48 Nm/kg (92%) during running and 0.63 Nm/kg (66%) during jumping, with the dynamic breast model. Future female musculoskeletal models should consider including breast mass and motion to avoid mis-representing spinal loading in females during running and jumping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tessier number 10 cleft is one of the rarest facial clefts. Surgical treatment of this type of cleft is challenging due to the complexity of periorbital and temporal soft tissue deformities. A 23-year-old male patient presented with typical facial deformities of Tessier number 10 cleft. The surgical procedure involved using a free anterolateral thigh flap to reconstruct the eye socket, while the superficial temporal artery pedicle scalp flap was used to reconstruct the eyebrow deformity. The patient had no complications and 16 months after surgery, the patient had good aesthetic results. A hair-bearing scalp flap with a pedicle of the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery combined with an anterolateral thigh-free flap can effectively resolve most soft tissue deformities of Tessier number 10 cleft and reconstruct the orbital socket in a single surgery. Elbow dislocation is frequently associated with bony and osteochondral posterolateral capitellar lesions that are often under-reported. We aim to examine the radiologic signs of posterolateral lesions on computed tomography (CT). A retrospective analysis of CT scans was performed. Patients were classified into 4 groups: (1) simple elbow dislocation, (2) elbow dislocation with a fracture of the coronoid tip, (3) elbow dislocation with coronoid tip fracture and a radial head fracture inferior or equal to the anterior third, and (4) terrible triad defined as elbow dislocation with concomitant coronoid and radial head fracture with a more important involvement. Patients with a more complex fracture pattern were excluded. The presence of POsteroLateral Engagement of Soft Tissue And Radial head (POLESTAR) patterns was analyzed and subclassified as impaction type or fragmentation type. Fifty-one CT scans met the inclusion criteria. POLESTAR lesions were identified in 48 cases (94%): 46% impaction-type and 54% fragmentation-type POLESTAR. Analyzing patients from grade 1 to 4, impaction-type POLESTAR was found, respectively, from 40% to 57%, whereas fragmentation type was present from 60% to 43%. This study shows a high incidence of POLESTAR lesions (94%) that can be present as impaction type or fragmentation type. Based on our preliminary results, impaction type is more common in grades 3 and 4, whereas fragmentation type is more frequent in grades 1 and 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ballistic impacts on human thorax without penetration can produce severe injuries or even death of the carrier. Soft tissue finite element models must capture the non-linear elasticity and strain-rate dependence to accurately estimate the dynamic human mechanical response. The objective of this work is the calibration of a visco-hyperelastic model for soft tissue simulants. Material model parameters have been calculated by fitting experimental stress–strain relations obtained from the literature using genetic algorithms. Several parametric analyses have been carried out during the definition of the optimization algorithm. In this way, we were able to study different optimization strategies to improve the convergence and accuracy of the final result. Finally, the genetic algorithm has been applied to calibrate two different soft tissue simulants: ballistic gelatin and styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene. The algorithm is able to calculate the constants for visco-hyperelastic constitutive equations with high accuracy. Regarding synthetic stress–strain curves, a short computational time has been shown when using the semi-free strategy, leading to high precision results in stress–strain curves. The algorithm developed in this work, whose code is included as supplementary material for the reader use, can be applied to calibrate visco-hyperelastic parameters from stress–strain relations under different strain rates. The semi-free relaxation time strategy has shown to obtain more accurate results and shorter convergence times than the other strategies studied. Introduction: Foreign body (FB) injuries constitute an important part of admission to emergency and orthopedic clinics in daily practice. The localization and removal of FBs can be difficult. Ultrasound (USG) plays an important role in the localization of FBs. In this study, we aimed to present the results of patients who underwent US-guided FB extraction. Methods: Fifty-seven patients who were admitted to the emergency service and orthopedic outpatient clinic due to FB trauma to soft tissue were retrospectively evaluated. USG-guided removal was performed under local anesthesia. The number, size, shape, structure, distance to the skin, and integrity of the FB were determined using USG guidance. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with Roles-Maudsley score. Results: The mean duration of surgery was 7 min (range; 5 to 20 minutes), and the mean incision size was 11 mm (range; 5 to 25 mm). Forty-seven of the patients underwent an outpatient procedure and were discharged on the same day. No postoperative complications were observed. Fifty one of 57 (89.5%) were very satisfied with the surgery. Conclusion: Consequently, USG-guided FB extraction is a safe, fast, and comfortable option for the patient and the physician. PURPOSE. The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of cement, bonding pretreatment, and ceramic abutment material on the overall color results of CAD-CAM ceramic crowns bonded to titanium-based hybrid abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For single implant restoration of a maxillary lateral incisor a total of 51 CAD-CAM-fabricated monolithic lithium disilicate crowns were fabricated and subsequently bonded onto 24 lithium disilicate Ti-base abutments, 24 zirconia Ti-base abutments and 3 resin abutment replicas as a control group. The 48 copings were cemented with three definitive and one provisional cement on both grit-blasted and non-blasted Ti-bases. The color of each restoration and surrounding artificial gingiva was measured spectrophotometrically at predefined measuring points and the CIELAB (ΔEab) color scale values were recorded. RESULTS. The color outcome of ceramic crowns bonded to hybrid abutments and soft tissues was affected differently by cements of different brands. Grit-blasting of Ti-bases prior to cementing CAD-CAM copings affected the color results of allceramic crowns. There was a significant difference ( P = .038) for the median ΔE value between blasted and non-blasted reconstructions at the cervical aspect of the crown. Full-ceramic crowns on zirconia Ti-base abutments exhibited significantly lower ΔE values below the threshold of visibility (ΔE 1.8). In all subcategories tested, the use of a highly opaque temporary cement demonstrated the lowest median ΔE for both the crown and the artificial gingiva. CONCLUSION. Various cements, core ceramic materials and airborne particle abrasion prior to bonding can adversely affect the color of Ti-base supported ceramic crowns and peri-implant soft tissue. Medical image analysis gains huge advancements with deep learning approaches which boosts the computational capability and accurate prediction. An expert in the field analyzes the feature representation, and an intelligent model helps to categorize and forecast diseases. The MRI images from cancer imaging archives are used to give a novel learning approach for soft tissue diagnosis. This work suggests a Type-2 fuzzy model that chooses local and maximum absolute value to handle the data. According to the experimental investigation, the predicted model works better than several current strategies. Deep convolutional neural networks built on the VGG-16 architecture and the Adam optimizers are used to pre-train the proposed model. The classification accuracy is anticipated based on the experimentation, demonstrating the need for complementary information for learning systems. The goal is to forecast the depth of knowledge extraction by boosting pre-trained CNN's ability to be fine-tuned by improving the accuracy of soft tissue classification. The proposed model improves performance and validates the significance of the network model by categorizing the tissues as benign or cancerous. The proposed model attains 96.8% accuracy and 9% for depths of 5 and 8 mm and 93% for 10 mm. Similarly, the model attains 96.8% without inclusion, 100% with inclusion and an average outcome of 99%.
