Information is given on the distribution and ecology of amphibians in the Pollino National Park, based on a summary of the data contained in the Herpetology Laboratory database at the Ecology Department (University of Calabria) and updated with information obtained during recent sampling. A total of 412 stations was monitored revealing the presence of 11 amphibian species. Two of these (Bombina pachypus, Salamandrina terdigitata) are included in annex II and six (Rana italica, R. dalmatina, Hyla intermedia, Bufo viridis, Triturus italicus, T. carnifex) in annex IV of the ‘Habitat’ directive. Some species represent interesting Italian (T. carnifex, H. intermedia), Apennine (B. pachypus, R. italica, S. terdigitata) and southern Italian (T. italicus) endemisms, which further valorize the heritage of the Park's fauna. For each species the state of conservation was checked and evaluated in order to propose suitable strategies for protection.

Labial and maxillary palps in 22 species of ground beetle larvae revealed the presence of four different types of sensilla: sensilla digitiformia, sensilla campaniformia, sensilla basiconica and sensilla chaetica. Using transmission electron microscopy techniques, the role of most of them was defined: sensilla campaniformia and sensilla chaetica are mechanoreceptors; while sensilla basiconica are chemoreceptors. Sensilla digitiformia can be both mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors, though hygroreception may also be postulated on the basis of their abundance on the mouthparts of some hygrophilous species that depend on damp or wet patchy biotopes/seasons. The number and location of the sensory structures has been found to vary among the investigated taxa. The differences are related to the larval behavioural types, and are an adaptive response to different lifestyles, feeding habits and use of space.

The relationship of morphometrical and androgen receptor evaluations of the main testicular interstitium cellular element (Leydig cells) in the domestic pig provided interesting numerical and morphological features during the different aging stages. As early as 25 days (a period in which the pig is sexually immature) there was a low number of Leydig cells (1.46 x 10(8)) with respect to a 78% and 35% increase in the adult (2.48 x 108) and aged (1.78 x 10(8)) animal, respectively. Interestingly, when the volume density of Leydig cells was considered, the average volume of these cells seemed to be high (75%) in the aged pig with respect to the young immature animal whereas a lower increase (27%) was observed for the adult animal. Moreover, the evaluation of testosterone receptor binding sites in the testis at the various stages of development also displayed a differentiated pattern since elevated testosterone receptor binding levels of the high dissociation affinity type were obtained for the adult pig. Thus, from the combined morphological variations of Leydig cells and testosterone receptor binding activity, it appears that this androgenic receptor component exerts distinct autocrine effects on the different functional features of some testicular tissue constituents at the different aging stages of the domestic pig.

The embryonic development of Triturus italicus was observed at different temperatures. Normal development occurred between 10°C and 22.5°C. In this range of temperatures an hyperbolic relationship between development time and temperature was confirmed.

Bilecenoglu [et al.], Based on recent biodiversity studies carried out in different parts of the Mediterranean, the following 19 species are included as new records on the floral or faunal lists of the relevant ecosystems: the green algae Penicillus capitatus (Maltese waters); the nemertean Amphiporus allucens (Iberian Peninsula, Spain); the salp Salpa maxima (Syria); the opistobranchs Felimida britoi and Berghia coerulescens (Aegean Sea, Greece); the dusky shark Carcharhinus obscurus (central-west Mediterranean and Ionian Sea, Italy); Randall’s threadfin bream Nemipterus randalli, the broadbanded cardinalfish Apogon fasciatus and the goby Gobius kolombatovici (Aegean Sea, Turkey); the reticulated leatherjack Stephanolepis diaspros and the halacarid Agaue chevreuxi (Sea of Marmara, Turkey); the slimy liagora Ganonema farinosum, the yellowstripe barracuda Sphyraena chrysotaenia, the rayed pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata and the Persian conch Conomurex persicus (south-eastern Crete, Greece); the blenny Microlipophrys dalmatinus and the bastard grunt Pomadasys incisus (Ionian Sea, Italy); the brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus (north-eastern Levant, Turkey); the blue-crab Callinectes sapidus (Corfu, Ionian Sea, Greece). In addition, the findings of the following rare species improve currently available biogeographical knowledge: the oceanic pufferfish Lagocephalus lagocephalus (Malta); the yellow sea chub Kyphosus incisor (Almuñécar coast of Spain); the basking shark Cetorhinus maximus and the shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus (north-eastern Levant, Turkey).

Endosulfan is an organochlorine pesticide that was recently labeled as a persistent organic pollutant, but it is still widely employed, particularly in developing countries. The goal of this study is to evaluate the acute (LC(50)) and chronic effects (developmental and behavioural traits) of this insecticide on Rana dalmatina tadpoles after exposure to ecologically relevant concentrations (0.005, 0.01, and 0.05 mg/L) by applying video-tracking techniques to evaluate the quantitative effect of endosulfan on amphibian behavioural patterns. The 96 h LC(50) value was 0.074 mg endosulfan/L. Tadpoles chronically exposed to 0.01 and 0.05 mg endosulfan/L underwent high mortality rate, decreased larval growth, delayed development, and increased incidence of malformations, and they did not reach metamorphosis by the end of the experiment. Moreover, tadpoles exposed to these concentrations exhibited several abnormalities in swimming patterns, such as shorter distance moved, swirling, resting, and unusual use of space. The exposure to 0.005 mg endosulfan/L did not cause any significant effects on behaviour, larval growth, or development, but we observed a significant decrease in both survival and time to metamorphosis. We showed that developmental abnormalities are dose-dependent and that the pesticide effects could differ depending on the endosulfan concentration and the species tested. We also validated the hypothesis that behavioural analysis, along with the use of new analytical methods, could be a useful tool in amphibian ecotoxicological studies.

During the 2000-2009, a survey study on the spatiotemporal patterns of distribution of large predatory sharks was carried out in the Calabria region. A total of 12 species were recorded and among them the blue shark Prionace glauca and the bluntnose sixgill shark Hexanchus griseus were the most common ones. Also of interest was the frequency of species such as Carcharodon carcharias, Sphyrna zygaena and Cetorhinus maximus. 57% of all reported records derived from the Tyrrhenian side of the region and 43% on the Ionian side. A significant relationship between season of the year versus number of records was found, but this could be related to the small number of observers that were active during the winter months. The presence of Sphyrna lewini is reported for the study area; this species was previously recorded only in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. This paper also provides evidence of the second and first documented accounts of white shark predation upon Tursiops truncatus and Stenella coeruleoalba, respectively, in the Mediterranean Sea. The recovering of Ionian Sphyrna zygaena populations and the declining of Lamna nasus populations were also noted., U razdoblju od 2000 do 2009, provedeno je istraživanje prostorno-vremenskih obrazaca raspodjele velikih grabežljivih morskih pasa u talijanskoj regiji Calabria. Ukupno je zabilježeno 12 vrsta, te su među njima najčešće bili zastupljeni morski pas modrulj Prionace glauca i glavonja Hexanchus griseus. Zanimljiva je i učestalost vrsta kao što su velika bijela psina Carcharodon carcharias, mlat Sphyrna zygaena i psina golema Cetorhinus maximus. Od svih prijavljenih nalaza 57% je ostvareno na Tirenskoj strani regije, a 43% na Jonskoj strani. Ustanovljena je značajna povezanost između godišnjih doba u odnosu na broj zapisa, ali to bi moglo bi se moglo odnositi na mali broj promatrača koji su bili aktivni tijekom zimskih mjeseci. Prisutnost Sphyrna lewini je ustanovljena na istraživanom području: ova vrsta je prethodno bila zabilježena samo u zapadnom dijelu Sredozemnog mora.U radu se također navodi prvi i drugi dokumentirani nalaz bijelog morskog psa kao grabežljivca vrste dobrog dupina Tursiops truncatus i plavobijelog dupina Stenella coeruleoalba u Sredozemnom moru. Također je primjećen oporavak jonske populacije mlata Sphyrna zygaena i pad populacije kučine Lamna nasus.

Three alien algae are included, namely Codium taylorii reported for the first time from the Aegean and Turkey (Izmir Gulf), Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea (Karpathos and Chalki Isl., Aegean Sea) and Ganonema farinosum (Karpathos Isl., Aegean Sea). As far as animals are concerned, Litarachna divergens (Acari: Hydrachnidia) was recorded (Side, Eastern Mediterranean) and represents a new amendment at genus level for Turkish fauna. Other invertebrates include alien species such as the crabs Dyspanopeus sayi (Lago Fusaro, SW Italy), Percnon gibbesi (Larnaca, Cyprus; Karpathos and Chalki Isl., Aegean Sea) and Callinectes sapidus (Voda estuary, NAV Greece), the nudibranch Aplysia dactylomela (Boka Kotorska Bay, Montenegro), the gastropod Conomurex persicus (Karpathos and Chalki Isl., Aegean Sea) and the bryozoan Electra tenella (Livorno harbour and Messina Straits area). The alien fish Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Fistularia commersonii, Sphyraena chrysotaenia and Sargocentron rubrum are also reported from the islands of Karpathos and Chalki, and Pteragogus pelycus from Heraklion Bay, Crete. In addition, new localities for four rare Mediterranean inhabitants are given: the cephalopod Thysanoteuthis rhombus (NW Sardinia) and the fish: Lampris guttatus (Calabria, S Italy), Petromyzon marinus (Gokova Bay) and Remora australis (Saronikos Gulf), while the opisthobranch gastropod Cerberilla bernadettae is reported for the first time from the E Mediterranean (Cyprus). Finally, three species of the Aegean ascidiofauna are recorded for the first time: Lissoclinum perforatum, Ciona roulei and Ecteinascidia turbinata. Furthermore, it was established that Phallusia nigra has extended its distributional range to the north of the Aegean Sea. Calcific aortic stenosis is a progressive disease characterized by massive fibrosis andmineralization of the valve leaflets. The aim of this study was to determine whether the onset of native calcific aortic stenosis is associated primarily with matrix remodelling events, and particularly with elastin degradation.The immunohistochemical expression profile of matrix degradating enzymes and tenascin-C was investigated in both healthy and native calcified aortic valves. Collagen and elastic tissue were studied by light microscopy and electron microscopy. Immunophenotypic analysis of inflammatory cells was carried out by using monoclonal antibodies to macrophages, T and B lymphocytes. Immunoreactivity for tenascin-C and matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12) was associated with areas of dense mineralization, which were characterized by fibrosis, fragmentation and calcification of elastic fibres a positive reaction was also found around small islands of calcification. MMP-11 was not detected in the diseased valves. Osteopontin and osteonectin were also found at sites of mineralization. All calcified valves examined showed inflammatory cell infiltration.Our results demonstrate the direct involvement of MMP-12 in native aortic valve stenosis. MMP-mediated degradation of elastic fibres might contribute actively to valve mineralization by inducing calcium deposition onto fragmented elastin.

Morphology and ultrastructure of the skin of Lissotriton italicus (previously named Triturus italicus ) have been described in different phases of its biological cycle: larval stage, metamorphic stage and adult stage with emphasis on modifications occurring between aquatic and terrestrial adults. In the present study, light microscopy and both scanning and transmission electron microscopy were employed to analyze the histological and cytological remodelling that occurs in the skin of L. italicus during metamorphosis. The ultrastructure of the larval epidermis is arranged into three principal layers comprising an external layer of pavement cells, a basal layer and 1–3 intermediate layers consisting of Leydig cells along with accessory cells and mitochondria-rich cells. By the onset of metamorphosis, morphological changes of the skin include stratification and flattening of epidermal layers and disappearance of typical larval cells. In both aquatic and terrestrial adult phases the thin, cornified epidermis shows the same general arrangement as found in other vertebrates with an external stratum corneum and a variable number of intermediate cell layers. During the terrestrial adult phase, the skin is characterized by the presence of numerous tubercles; moreover, the lower epithelium is thicker than in the aquatic phase. Ultrastructural analysis revealed no substantial differences in the cellular composition of the skin between aquatic and terrestrial phases.

The word autophagy broadly refers to the cellular catabolic processes that lead to the removal of damaged cytosolic proteins or cell organelles through lysosomes. Although autophagy is often observed during programmed cell death, it may also serve as a cell survival mechanism. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species within tissues and cells induces various defense mechanisms or programmed cell death. It has been shown that, besides inducing apoptosis, oxidative stress can also induce autophagy. To date, however, the regulation of autophagy in response to oxidative stress remains largely elusive and poorly understood. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the ratio between oxidative stress and autophagy in macrophages after oxidant exposure (AAPH) and to investigate the ultrastructural localization of beclin-1, a protein essential for autophagy, under basal and stressful conditions. Our data provide evidence that oxidative stress induces autophagy in macrophages. We demonstrate, for the first time by immunoelectron microscopy, the subcellular localization of beclin-1 in autophagic cells.

Endosulfan sprayed on agricultural fields accumulates in temporary pools due to surface runoff or sediment transport and may result in high water concentrations in spring and summer, coinciding with breeding and crucial stages of amphibian larval development. In the present study, Bufo bufo tadpoles were exposed to three different concentrations of endosulfan (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/L) until they reached complete metamorphosis. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of endosulfan, at environmentally relevant concentrations on gill morphology and ultrastructure. Modifications in ultrastructure and cell composition were observed at all concentrations after 96 h. The main gill effects recorded in treated animals were: mucous secretion, the appearance of tubular vesicles cells (TVC) and a degeneration phenomenon. Comparing these results with our previous findings in which we used growth, developmental rate and behaviour as endpoints, we also demonstrated that the first effect of endosulfan on Bufo bufo was gill alteration, thus supporting the role of a morphological approach in toxicological studies. This study provides additional information on the role of morphological studies in demonstrating the effects of exposure to environmental pollutants. In this context, the use of amphibian gills, as effective biomarkers, is a valuable approach in evaluating exposure to agrochemicals.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe bone disorder traditionally associated with periodontal disease, local malignancy, chemotherapy, glucocorticoid therapy, or trauma. Recently a growing number of publications reported the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients undergoing treatment with bisphosphonates. The mechanism by which bisphosphonates might contribute to the development of osteonecrosis of the jaw is far from being fully elucidated. Suppression of bone turnover, infection, tissue hypoxia and cellular toxicity were proposed as possible mechanisms by which bisphosphonates may exert adverse effects on bone metabolism. Here, we studied 25 consecutive patients treated with bisphosphonates for osteoporosis or tumoral pathologies. We provide good evidence of hyperactive osteoclastic bone resorption and suggest a direct cytotoxic effect of bisphosphonates on bone tissue through induction of osteocyte cell death. We also demonstrate that bisphosphonates only have limited adverse effects on bone vascular network.

Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies were conducted on the gill epithelium of the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis). We analysed the immunolocalisation of aquaporin 3 (AQP3) and aquaporin 1 (AQP1) in the gills using confocal microscopy. The ultrastructural features of the gill were investigated using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The C. julis gill apparatus showed structural characteristics typical for Teleostei. Immunolocalization revealed differential localization of AQP1 and AQP3 in the gill epithelium. Double immunolabelling for Na+/K+ ATPase with AQP1or AQP3 revealed that AQP1 is localised in chloride cells, whereas AQP3 is localized in both the chloride cells and the accessory cells. This result suggests an active role of these cells in water/glycerol transport in saltwater fish.

Gill morphology and ultrastructure are described for Triturus carnifex and Salamandrina terdigitata with emphasis on differences occurring between two species that inhabit different aquatic biotopes. The morphology and ultrastructure have been studied using light microscopy and both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The general organization of the gills is similar in the two species and shows the characteristics of Urodela larvae in which the gills consist of three tufts of filaments supported by gill arches III, IV and V. However, some differences are noticeable in the length of the main filament and in the number of secondary lamellae: in T. carnifex, a pond‐dwelling salamander, the main filaments are long and rich in secondary lamellae; in the stream‐type larva of S. terdigitata, the main filaments are shorter and show a lower number of secondary lamellae, located in its proximal portion. Background Nitric oxide has been proven to play an important role in the maintenance of vascular tone and structure. Impairment of nitric oxide production is an early indicator of atherosclerosis, but not much is known about the real mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Methods In the present study, immunocytochemical methods have been used to analyze the patterns of expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and inducible nitric oxide synthase proteins in healthy and atherosclerotic human aortae using both confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscopy. Results Induction of the expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and inducible nitric oxide synthase proteins was observed in smooth muscle cells of atherosclerotic human aortae. Altered nitric oxide synthase expression was reported in atheromatous plaques and in apparently normal vascular tissues adjacent to the lesions. Conclusions Our data confirm and extend previous findings of a direct relationship between dysregulation of nitric oxide pathway and atherosclerosis, suggesting another possible mechanism by which nitric oxide synthase system abnormalities may promote vascular dysfunction during human atherogenesis. Changes in nitric oxide production might be the primary step in the development of atheroma.

Abstract Based on more than 1100 samples of Emys orbicularis and E. trinacris, data on mtDNA diversity and distribution of haplotypes are provided, including for the first time data for Armenia, Georgia, Iran, and the Volga, Ural and Turgay River Basins of Russia and Kazakhstan. Eight mitochondrial lineages comprising 51 individual haplotypes occur in E. orbicularis, a ninth lineage with five haplotypes corresponds to E. trinacris. A high diversity of distinct mtDNA lineages and haplotypes occurs in the south, in the regions where putative glacial refuges were located. More northerly parts of Europe and adjacent Asia, which were recolonized by E. orbicularis in the Holocene, display distinctly less variation; most refuges did not contribute to northern recolonizations. Also in certain southern European lineages a decrease of haplotype diversity is observed with increasing latitude, suggestive of Holocene range expansions on a smaller scale.

In summer 2010 and summer 2011, weekly cetacean surveys were undertaken in “passing mode”, using ferries as platform of opportunity, along the “fixed line transect” between Catania and Civitavecchia (Southern Italy). Of the 20 species of cetaceans confirmed for the Mediterranean sea, 8 were sighted within the survey period: 7 species represented by Mediterranean subpopulations ( Balaenoptera physalus, Physeter macrocephalus, Stenella coeruleoalba, Delphinus delphis, Grampus griseus, Tursiops truncatus and Ziphius cavirostris ) and one considered visitor ( Steno bredanensis ). We had a total of 220 sightings during the 2010 and a total of 240 sightings in the 2011. The most frequent species was S. coeruleoalba. By the comparison of the data from the two sampling seasons, a significant increase of D. delphis sightings and a decrease of sightings of B. physalus and P. macrocephalus was observed from 2010 to 2011. While all the other species were observed in both sampling seasons, Z. cavirostris and Steno bredanensis were observed only during 2011. The presence of mixed groups of odontocetes was documented too: we sighted groups composed by S. coeruleoalba and D. delphis , by S. coeruleoalba and T. truncatus , and by S. coeruleoalba and G. griseus . The results of this research add useful information on cetacean species in a very poorly known area and highlight the need to standardize large scale and long term monitoring programs in order to detect variation in presence, abundance and distribution of cetaceans populations and understand the effect of anthropogenic factors.

In the present study we compared the proliferation behavior, the ultrastructural morphology and the glycolitic metabolism of K562 cells irradiated by low-power wide-band millimeter waves, with those of sham-exposed K562 cells (control), maintained in the same culture conditions. The gigaHertz radiation treatments, performed between 53-78 10(9) Hz, induced a noticeable inhibition of the cell proliferation that could be related to relevant ultrastructural changes. Such effects brought the irradiated cell system to lose the homeostasis and to trigger defense/reparatory mechanisms in order to reestablish a new steady state. (13)C-Nuclear magnetic resonance data on the kinetic of glucose metabolism demonstrated that the irradiated cells enhanced the glycolitic aerobic pathway, indicating that such system need to produce an extra-bioenergy. Most of the ATP synthesized served probably to perform the above processes resulting in a significant decrease of the proliferation rate without significant cell death increment.

Our previous work showed that low-power wide-band millimeter waves (MMW) inhibit the growth of the MCF-7 human breast carcinoma cell line, also causing a marked reduction of the density of microvilli at the apical membrane of the MCF-7 cells, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The aim of the present work was to investigate the ultrastructural changes induced by such electromagnetic radiations on this cell line. A transmission electron microscopy study was performed on MCF-7 cells irradiated under the same experimental conditions previously adopted. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed several ultrastructural features of the MMW-irradiated cells pertinent to cells subjected to sublethal injury. The antiproliferative effect of the millimeter radiation was confirmed. MMW, in the 52-78 GHz frequency range, act as stress factor on the cells that survive in a non-steady low-mitogenetic metabolic state.

We analyzed the skin of Triturus italicus (Amphibia, Urodela) histologically during the larval, pre-metamorphic and adult phases in parallel with the immunohistochemical evaluation of the expression of two nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms, i.e. the inducible NOS (iNOS) and the endothelial NOS (eNOS). Our results indicate that, during the larval and adult phases, substantial changes in the intensity and localization of both iNOS and eNOS are present. In contrast, the pre-metamorphic newts show a labelling pattern similar to that found in the skin of adult individuals. These data suggest an involvement of the NOS system in the larval epidermis during functional maturation phase starting at the climax and preceding structural rearrangements during metamorphosis, emphasizing the putative functional importance of differential isoform expression related to a distinct phase of the biological cycle.

Geographic variation in the mtDNA haplotypes (cytochrome b gene) of 127 European pond turtles from Italy was investigated. Thirty-eight of the Italian samples were also studied by nuclear fingerprinting (ISSR PCR) and compared with samples from other parts of the range representing all nine currently known mtDNA lineages of Emys orbicularis. Our genetic findings were compared against morphological data sets (measurements, colour pattern) for 109 adult turtles from southern Italy. Italy is displaying on a small geographical scale the most complicated variation known over the entire distributional area of Emys (North Africa over Europe and Asia Minor to the Caspian and Aral Seas). The Tyrrhenic coast of the Apennine Peninsula, the Mt. Pollino area and Basilicata are inhabited by Emys orbicularis galloitalica, a subspecies harbouring a distinct mtDNA lineage. The same lineage is also found in Sardinia. Along the Adriatic coast of Italy and on the Salentine Peninsula (Apulia, southern Italy), another morphologically distinctive subspecies (Emys orbicularis hellenica) occurs, which also bears a different mtDNA lineage. A higher diversity of mtDNA haplotypes in the south of the Apennine Peninsula suggests that the glacial refugia of E. o. galloitalica and E. o. hellenica were located here. A further refuge of E. o. hellenica probably existed in the southern Balkans. The west coasts of the Balkans and Corfu have probably been colonized from Italy and not from the geographically closer southern Balkanic refuge. In Sicily, a third mtDNA lineage is distributed, which is sister to all other known lineages of Emys. Morphologically, Sicilian pond turtles resemble E. o. galloitalica. However, nuclear fingerprinting revealed a clear distinctiveness of the Sicilian taxon, whereas no significant divergence was detected between representatives of the other eight mtDNA lineages of Emys. Furthermore, nuclear fingerprinting provided no evidence for current or past gene flow between the Sicilian taxon and the mainland subspecies of E. orbicularis. Therefore, Sicilian pond turtles are described here as a species new to science. Some populations in Calabria and on the Salentine Peninsula comprise individuals of different mtDNA lineages. We interpret this as a natural contact. However, we cannot exclude that these syntopic occurrences are the result of human activity. For example, in other parts of Italy, the natural distribution pattern of Emys is obscured by allochthonous turtles. This could also be true for southern Italy. The discovery of the complex taxonomic differentiation in southern Italy requires reconsidering conservation strategies.

To extend the study on bird spermiogenesis we have observed by electron microscopy the mature testis of the cuculiform Crotophaga am. During nucleus elongation the chromatin condenses in dense granules and the nucleoplasm is reducing. The Golgi apparatus starts the developing of the acrosomal vesicle. The elongating nucleus drives the acrosomal vesicle against the cell membrane. At the opposite side the flagellum arises from the distal centriole and comes out from the cell at a very early stage. While the cytoplasm is reducing, the mitochondria arrange themselves around the distal centriole and around the fore part of the axoneme. The elongating spermatid does not have a microtubular manchette or a microtubular bundle, as seen in other birds. It is entirely surrounded by a Sertoli cell, which shows many microtubules scattered in the cytoplasm. These microtubules are arranged parallel to the axis of elongating spermatids. Linalool, a small monoterpene molecule, is used widely for its flavoring and fragrant properties in many cosmetic products. In this work, we investigated the antiproliferative effect of two different linalool solutions on RPMI 7932 human melanoma and NCTC 2544 normal keratinocites cell lines using the trypan blue method. Morphological changes in cells were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, apoptosis was evaluated using caspase 3-antibody. Linalool showed a selective inhibitory effect on the growth of melanoma cells in a concentration-dependent manner, inducing several morphological changes, as revealed by SEM and TEM analysis. Moreover, the labelling for caspase-3 is abundant in the melanoma cells and almost absent in the normal keratinocites cells. The results suggest that linalool could be used as drug and/or as model drug for developing potential therapeutic agents for melanoma.

Endosulfan sprayed on agricultural fields accumulates in temporary pools due to surface runoff or sediment transport and may result in high water concentrations in spring and summer, coinciding with breeding and crucial stages of amphibian larval development. In the present study, Bufo bufo tadpoles were exposed to three different concentrations of endosulfan (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/L) until they reached complete metamorphosis. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of endosulfan, at environmentally relevant concentrations on gill morphology and ultrastructure. Modifications in ultrastructure and cell composition were observed at all concentrations after 96 h. The main gill effects recorded in treated animals were: mucous secretion, the appearance of tubular vesicles cells (TVC) and a degeneration phenomenon. Comparing these results with our previous findings in which we used growth, developmental rate and behaviour as endpoints, we also demonstrated that the first effect of endosulfan on Bufo bufo was gill alteration, thus supporting the role of a morphological approach in toxicological studies. This study provides additional information on the role of morphological studies in demonstrating the effects of exposure to environmental pollutants. In this context, the use of amphibian gills, as effective biomarkers, is a valuable approach in evaluating exposure to agrochemicals.

This paper reports information about the presence of three allochthonous reptiles species in Calabria: Testudo marginata, Trachemys scripta elegans and Chamaeleo chamaeleon. The first one was found in three sites located in the Catena Costiera Massif and in the Crati Valley (Northern Calabria). The slider turtle was found in seven different sites throughout all the region. It massively colonised the Angitola artificial lake: here, this turtle lives in natural conditions and its reproduction was confirmed by the presence of nests, eggs and hatchlings. C. chamaeleon is present in sandy coastal habitats near Palmi and Gioia Tauro (Southern Calabria). From a conservationistic point of view, serious damages to autochtonous species could be caused by the spreading of T. scripta elegans: this species has already determined the local extinction of Angitola’s Emys orbicularis populations., Acta Herpetologica, Vol 5 No 2 (2010)

Recent studies suggest that in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, pathological changes occur in the subsynovial connective tissue. Such changes are non-inflammatory synovial fibrosis and vascular proliferation. Thickening of the tendon sheet may cause an increase of canal pressure and damages to the median nerve in the wrist; however, the causes of such events still remain to be clarified. We examined synovial specimens from 26 patients operated on for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome. Analysis included histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical examination in order to establish a pathological underlying pattern. An explanation for the pathogenesis of the found changes suggested. Our data confirm the presence of a non-inflammatory fibrosis with irregular bundles of collagen. De novo blood vessel formation was also noted. Interestingly the neo-angiogenesis consists of anomalous vessels and may be triggered from various cell types secreting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), including macrophage-like elements similar to endothelial progenitor cells. Therefore, we believe that in the future a non-surgical management of carpal tunnel syndrome might be conjecturable via anti-VEGF drugs.
