56. Adoption of Response Surface Methodology for Optimization of Benzotriazole Additive in Ester Fluids as Transformer Insulant

Abstract

This paper reports the critical investigation on the streaming current of ester fluids towards power transformer. The optimization of benzotriazole (BTA) additive is tested based on the streaming current analysis considering its influence with and without the temperature. From the experimental results, the BTA concentration of 130 ppm on ester fluids observed a negative streaming current. The influence of temperature increases the streaming current of ester fluids. Only a minimal change is noticed in the viscosity of ester fluids with the addition of BTA but to the contradict, an increased dissipation factor is observed. The Response surface methodology (RSM) algorithm is being utilized as an optimization algorithm to identify the permissible level of BTA under transformer standstill and normal operating temperature conditions.

64. Rheological Analysis of Thermally Aged Natural Ester Fluid Using Nonlinear Least Square Technique

Abstract

In the present study, rheological studies dealing with the flow behavior of thermally aged natural ester fluid under laboratory-controlled conditions are performed. Visual observation of gelling is witnessed due to thermal aging. An enhancement in viscosity of about 188% is observed with the 500-h aged fluid compared to the nonaged fluid. It is estimated that the flow behavior altered by gel follows non-Newtonian behavior with a shear-thinning effect on applied shear rate conditions. The dependency of storage and loss modulus to amplitude and frequency sweep under oscillatory shear flow was investigated. The viscous state of gel dominates over its initial elastic state, beyond the gel point. The flow models that govern the behavior of the gel were applied, adopting nonlinear least square methods to investigate the rheological parameters in terms of flow behavior index and yield stress. The results of the thermally aged natural ester fluid demonstrate a positive correlation with Bingham’s model and Mizrahi–Berk’s model based on the yield stress and flow behavior index, respectively. The phase transition of gel investigated in the present study can be used as a time-based preventive measure, by the transformer manufacturer, in the heat transfer performance of natural ester-filled transformers.

65. Performance Evaluation of Thermally-Aged RTV Silicone Rubber/TiO2 Nanocomposites in Mineral Oil for Transformer Bushings

Abstract

The room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber is regarded as a coating material for power transformer bushings. However, the performance of silicone rubber may get severely degraded in the event of leakage of mineral oil from the transformer. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to exploring the viability of silicone rubber nanocomposites in retarding transformer oil-induced damages. Therefore, this article investigates the effect of mineral oil on silicone rubber material doped with Titania (TiO $_{{2}}{)}$ nanofillers. Silicone rubber nanocomposites with 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% of nano-TiO2 were synthesized and thermally aged in transformer oil at 80 °C for 18 h. Performance evaluation was done based on the experimental outcomes of 3-D microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle, corona inception voltage (CIV), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared (IR) thermography, surface potential, and water diffusion tests. Finally, based on the experimental investigations, 5 wt% nanocomposite was found to be superior in performance against transformer oil-induced degradation.

98. Role of energy and gas pressure on phase evolution of nano-alumina in wire explosion process

Abstract

Phase control of alumina nanoparticles (NPs) is successfully shown by wire explosion process under gas ambient. Aluminium wire was exploded at different levels of energy in oxygen ambient under pressures of 20 and 180 kPa. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the 20 kPa tests yield δ-alumina while 180 kPa tests yield γ-alumina NPs with an appropriate value of energy. Spherical NPs were obtained as visualised from SEM and TEM micrographs. Size of NPs decreased with an increase in energy and/or a decrease in pressure of oxygen. The formation mechanism of different phases and sizes of NPs are detailed in this paper.
