Abstract

International audience; The influence of the size and the air-filling fraction of the inner microstructure on the first HOM confinement in Yb-doped LMA PCFs under different heat load values has been investigated with a full-vector modal solver based on the finite element method, used also to solve the steady-state heat equation. In particular, the air-cladding inner dimension and the air-hole diameter in Symmetry-Free PCFs and Large Pitch Fibers have been modified in order to study which conditions facilitate the coupling between HOM and cladding modes, thus improving the delocalization of the former and making the fiber single-mode behavior more robust.

This paper describes a method to analyze open or closed elliptical structures with constant axial ratio by a Body-of-Revolution (BoR) Finite Element Method (FEM). The method is based on Transformation Optics, a coordinate transformation that maps the elliptical shape to a circular shape, for which BoR-FEM represents a greatly efficient tool for the analysis. Abstract

Le antenne integrate attive (AIA), rappresentano la nuova frontiera nella progettazione dei moderni sistemi a radiofrequenza e ad onde millimetriche, sia per applicazioni militari che per applicazioni commerciali. Negli ultimi anni, la progettazione dell’antenna, oltre al raggiungimento dei requisiti sul diagramma di irradiazione, sul guadagno e sull’adattamento di impedenza, richiede una forte integrazione dell’elemento radiante nel sistema. Infatti, nei sistemi di trasmissione, ed in special modo in quelli mobili, è di fondamentale importanza ridurre al minimo la dissipazione di potenza in continua, per aumentare la durata delle batterie e per ridurre il peso e l’ingombro dell’intera unità, riducendo sia le dimensioni dei sistemi di alimentazione che dei sistemi di raffreddamento. Fattori cruciali nelle scelte progettuali saranno quindi l’efficienza, le dimensioni e la larghezza di banda, oltre al controllo delle interferenze elettromagnetiche tra i vari sottosistemi. Allo scopo di investigare questi nuovi concetti e sviluppare strutture innovative, è stato proposto e finanziato il progetto PRIN’05 dal titolo “Antenne Integrate Attive per Terminali Mobili ad Alta Efficienza”. Il progetto di ricerca si pone come obiettivo lo sviluppo di un’antenna integrata attiva per terminali mobili ad alta efficienza per applicazioni in banda Ku. Gli aspetti innovativi proposti riguardano la possibilità di integrazione dell’elettronica di front-end con l’elemento radiante, al fine di migliorare le prestazioni dell’intero trasmettitore. Le problematiche di rilievo sono l’integrazione dello stadio di potenza con il singolo elemento radiante, lo sviluppo di oscillatori VCO basati su1 concetto di injection locking per l’implementazione di array fasati e lo studio delle problematiche di sviluppo di array ad alta efficienza. Per quanto riguarda lo stadio di potenza integrato con l’elemento radiante, l’idea è stata quella di usare quest’ultimo anche come carico armonico per l’ottimizzazione delle prestazioni dello stadio di potenza.

When Courant prepared the text of his 1942 address to the American Mathematical Society for publication, he added a two-page Appendix to illustrate how the variational methods first described by Lord Rayleigh could be put to wider use in potential theory. Choosing piecewise-linear approximants on a set of triangles which he called elements, he dashed off a couple of two-dimensional examples and the finite element method was born. … Finite element activity in electrical engineering began in earnest about 1968-1969. A paper on waveguide analysis was published in Alta Frequenza in early 1969, giving the details of a finite element formulation of the classical hollow waveguide problem. It was followed by a rapid succession of papers on magnetic fields in saturable materials, dielectric loaded waveguides, and other well-known boundary value problems of electromagnetics. … In the decade of the eighties, finite element methods spread quickly. In several technical areas, they assumed a dominant role in field problems. P.P. 83. Dispersion engineering of highly nonlinear chalcogenide suspended-core fibers

Abstract

Chalcogenide optical fibers are currently undergoing intensive investigation with the aim of exploiting the excellent glass transmission and nonlinear characteristics in the near- and mid-infrared for several applications. Further enhancement of these properties can be obtained, for a particular application, with optical fibers specifically designed that are capable of providing low effective area together with a properly tailored dispersion, matching the characteristics of the laser sources used to excite nonlinear effects. Suspended-core photonic crystal fibers are ideal candidates for nonlinear applications, providing small-core waveguides with large index contrast and tunable dispersion. In this paper, the dispersion properties of As2S3 suspended-core fibers are numerically analyzed, taking into account, for the first time, all the structural parameters, including the size and the number of the glass bridges. The results show that a proper design of the cladding struts can be exploited to significantly change the fiber properties, altering the maximum value of the dispersion parameter and shifting the zero-dispersion wavelengths over a range of 400 nm.

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 3098-3100, The aim of this paper is to present the activity of the FP7 EU funded ALPINE project whose research core is the development of fiber laser systems for scribing photovoltaic modules realized by using two of the most appealing technologies, that is CdTe and CIS or CIGS based thin films. The project consortium focuses its work on lasers realized by means of a new generation of optical fibers, that is photonic crystal fibers, which assure high brilliance, high efficiency and premium beam quality. These fibre lasers are intended to optimize all of the three laser scribing steps, P1, P2 and P3, for both photovoltaic substrate or superstrate configurations.
