The excitation energy of deformed intruder states (specifically the 2p2h bandhead) as a function of proton number Z along N=20 is of interest both in terms of better understanding the evolution of nuclear structure between spherical Ca40 and the Island of Inversion nuclei, and for benchmarking theoretical descriptions in this region. At the center of the N=20 Island of Inversion, the npnh (where n=2,4,6) neutron excitations across a diminished N=20 gap result in deformed and collective ground states, as observed in Mg32. In heavier isotones, npnh excitations do not dominate in the ground states but are present in the relatively low-lying level schemes. With the aim of identifying the expected 2p2h - s1/2+ state in P35, the only N=20 isotone for which the neutron 2p2h excitation bandhead has not yet been identified, the S36(d,He3)P35 reaction has been revisited in inverse kinematics with the HELical Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS). While a candidate state has not been located, an upper limit for the transfer reaction cross section to populate such a configuration within a 2.5 to 3.6 MeV energy range provides a stringent constraint on the wave function compositions in both S36 and P35.

Excited states in Gd160 were populated via β decay from the low- and high-spin isomers in Eu160. The high-spin, Kπ=5- state feeds several two-quasiparticle levels, as well as a sequence associated with a γ vibration and a Kπ=4+, hexadecapole vibrational structure. The decay scheme was significantly improved with the observation of new transitions and states when compared with the two competing level schemes from over four decades ago. Configuration assignments for some of the multiquasiparticle levels have been suggested, based upon decay properties, systematics from neighboring nuclei, and comparisons with theoretical calculations. In addition, 15 new low-spin states and approximately 60 new transitions were observed resulting from the decay of the low-spin Eu160 isomer.

International audience; High spin states of Ar37, populated through the Al27(C12,np)Ar37 reaction with a 40 MeV C12 beam, were studied using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) facility. The existing level scheme has been extended up to 10.5 MeV by adding some new levels and transitions. The spins and parities of the new levels were assigned from RDCO, RADO, and linear polarization measurements. The spins and parities of the existing levels also were modified or confirmed in the present experiment. The multipole mixing ratios (δ) for most of the transitions were measured and compared with the earlier measurements wherever available. Large basis shell model calculations with different particle restrictions in sd and pf orbitals were performed to understand the microscopic origin of these levels. A simple two-level mixing calculation was also performed to extract the amount of multiparticle multihole configuration mixing for a few levels.

International audience; The nuclear structure exhibits transitional behaviour in the A'125 mass region as the nuclei lie between the spherical (Sn, Z=50) and deformed (Ce, Z=58) structures. Here exists a unique parity intruder subshell, h11/2, which can be accessed by both the protons and the neutrons. These h11/2 nucleons have opposite deformation driving effects which lead to an interplay of prolate, oblate or triaxial nuclear shapes[1].

Using a hybrid Gammasphere array coupled to 25 LaBr3(Ce) detectors, the lifetimes of the first three levels of the yrast band in ¹¹⁴Pd populated via ²⁵²Cf decay, have been measured. The measured lifetimes are τ₂+=103(10)ps, τ₄+=22(13)ps, and τ₆+≤10ps for the 2⁺₁, 4⁺₁, and 6⁺₁ levels, respectively. Palladium-114 was predicted to be the most deformed isotope of its isotopic chain, and spectroscopic studies have suggested it might also be a candidate nucleus for low-spin stable triaxiality. From the lifetimes measured in this work, reduced transition probabilities B(E2;J→J−2) are calculated and compared with interacting boson model, projected shell model, and collective model calculations from the literature. The experimental ratio RB(E₂)=B(E2;4⁺₁→2⁺₁)/B(E2;2⁺₁→0⁺₁)=0.80(42) is measured for the first time in ¹¹⁴Pd and compared with the known values RB(E₂) in the palladium isotopic chain: the systematics suggest that, for N=68, a transition from γ-unstable to a more rigid γ-deformed nuclear shape occurs.

Two opposite parity dipole sequences (DB I and DB II) in $^{142}$Eu have been investigated using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA), and heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reaction, $^{116}$Cd($^{31}$P, 5n) at ELab = 148 MeV. The Configurations of these bands are assigned on the basis of tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (TAC-CDFT) calculations. The measured B(M1) and B(E2) rates of the DB I and DB II, have been well reproduced within the shears mechanism with the principal axis cranking model (SPAC) calculations leading to the conclusion that these bands have been based on the shears mechanism. The large B(E1) transition rates between DB I and DB II indicate the existence of octupole correlation in $^{142}$Eu that has also been corroborated through microscopic multidimensionally-constrained covariant density functional theory (MDC-CDFT) calculations. Thus, the present investigation leads to the novel observation of the presence of octupole correlation between two shears band.

The neutron-rich Ni isotopes have attracted attention in recent years because of the occurrence of shape or configuration coexistence. We report on the difference in population of excited final states in Ni70 following γ-ray tagged one-proton, one-neutron, and two-proton knockout from Cu71, Ni71, and Zn72 rare-isotope beams, respectively. Using variations observed in the relative transition intensities, signaling the changed population of specific final states in the different reactions, the role of neutron and proton configurations in excited states of Ni70 is probed schematically, with the goal of identifying those that carry, as leading configuration, proton excitations across the Z=28 shell closure. Such states are suggested in the literature to form a collective structure associated with prolate deformation. Adding to the body of knowledge for Ni70, 29 new transitions are reported, of which 15 are placed in its level scheme.

Employing the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer and the implantation-decay-decay correlation technique, a weak 0.50(21)% proton decay branch was identified in $^{108}$I for the first time. The $^{108}$I proton-decay width is consistent with a hindered l=2 emission, suggesting a d52 origin. Using the extracted $^{108}$I proton-decay Q value of 597(13) keV, and the Qα values of the $^{108}$I and $^{107}$Te isotopes, a proton-decay Q value of 510(20) keV for $^{104}$Sb was deduced. Similarly to the $^{112,113}$Cs proton-emitter pair, the Qp(I108) value is lower than that for the less-exotic neighbor $^{109}$I, possibly due to enhanced proton-neutron interactions in N≈Z nuclei. In contrast, the present Qp(Sb104) is higher than that of $^{105}$Sb, suggesting a weaker interaction energy. For the present Qp(Sb104) value, network calculations with the one-zone X-ray burst model Mazzocchi et al. (2007) [18] predict no significant branching into the Sn-Sb-Te cycle at $^{103}$Sn.

The second-phonon (nω=2) wobbling band has been established in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr. Conclusive evidence for its wobbling nature comes from the ΔI=1, E2 character of the transitions between the new band and the previously identified transverse wobbler band (nω=1) in this nucleus. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the quasiparticle triaxial rotor and triaxial projected shell models are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

International audience; The decay scheme of 160Yb nucleus populated in the 148Sm(16O, 4n)160Yb reaction at 90 MeV has been studied. The gamma-coincidence data have been collected by using Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) composed of twenty Compton-suppressed Clover-germanium detectors. Compared to the prior publications, the level scheme has been significantly modified owing to the observation of triple γ-coincidences and the measurements of γ intensities, R θ (asymmetry ratio), directional correlation of oriented states and integrated polarisation directional correlation of oriented states ratios. Theoretical results relevant for the exotic shape-coexistence related to the present context are presented and discussed. They illustrate the consequences of the fact that 160Yb is expected to be a doubly-magic (Z = 70 and N = 90) tetrahedral-symmetry nucleus as predicted by other authors. The historical criteria of identification of such a symmetry in nuclei are critically revisited in the context of the actual measurement and interpretation of its results and the precise new criteria are formulated employing recent results of the Fukuoka-Strasbourg collaboration. The experimental results are interpreted and discussed in detail. Limiting values of branching ratios for transitions observed by other authors but unseen in the present work are estimated. The population criteria of the β and γ vibration bands are revisited and discussed. Although no indication of the presence of the stable tetrahedral configuration has been obtained, arguments are given towards the possible presence of the Y 32 (‘tetrahedral component’) vibrations around the ground-state equilibrium. With the improvement of the spectroscopic information provided by the new data the way is opened for designed experiment(s) based on the unambiguous identification criteria of tetrahedral symmetry presented in this article.

In contrast, the present Q p (Sb104) is higher than that of 105 Sb, suggesting a weaker interaction energy. For the present Q p (Sb104) value, network calculations with the one-zone X-ray burst model Mazzocchi et al. (2007) [18] predict no significant branching into the Sn-Sb-Te cycle at 103 Sn.

Cellulose nanopapers are the strongest polymeric material known to us, and in the near future, they are likely to be a backbone of numerous functional materials. Cellulose nanopapers have gained much attention due to qualities such as their environmentally friendly nature, renewable raw material source and biodegradability. Additionally, they offer an industrially adaptable, water-based processing route, which is similar to current paper production. Functionally, besides being tougher than any known plastic, cellulose nanopapers remain foldable like a paper. Despite their fascinating properties, cellulose nanopapers are still far from commercialisation — mainly due to two obstacles. Firstly, it can take up to hours to prepare a nanopaper due to poor draining of cellulosic nanofibres. Secondly, cellulose nanopapers have extremely poor water and humidity resistance, as up to 90% of their stiffness is lost in the presence of water. The purpose of this dissertation is to address both obstacles and suggest an eco-friendly yet industrially relevant solution. Two approaches are employed: increasing the hydrophobicity of cellulose nanofibres with lactic acid and ultrasonication (Paper I and II), and combining cellulose nanofibres with hydrophobic materials, such as polyurethane (Paper III) and lignin-rich entities (Paper IV). By using these methods, the preparation time was improved by 75% (Paper II) and by 70% (Paper IV) respectively. All reported nanopapers were significantly more tolerant of water and moisture than the reference nanopaper. The mechanical properties were also improved in Paper I and IV. Additionally, all reported nanopapers were thermally stable. This thesis also discusses the importance of quick draining in cellulose nanofibre-reinforced paper products. The results of this study are likely to aid the commercialisation of cellulose nanopapers in practical applications and the use of cellulose nanofibres in other materials, such as reinforcing paperboards. All methods used in this thesis are water-based. Tiivistelmä Selluloosapohjaiset nanopaperit ovat lujimpia tunnettuja polymeerimateriaaleja ja lähitulevaisuudessa niiden voidaan odottaa luovan perustan useille funktionaalisille materiaaleille. Nanopaperit ovat saaneet paljon huomiota ympäristöystävällisyytensä, uusiutuvan raaka-aineensa ja biohajoavuutensa ansiosta. Lisäksi niiden valmistusprosessi on vesipohjainen ja samankaltainen kuin tavallisen paperin valmistukseen käytetty teollinen prosessi. Käyttöominaisuuksiltaan ne ovat erinomaisia, sillä vaikka niiden sitkeys on parempi kuin tunnetuilla muoveilla, ovat ne silti paperin tavoin taiteltavia. Kiehtovista ominaisuuksistaan huolimatta selluloosapohjaiset nanopaperit ovat kuitenkin vielä kaukana kaupallistamisesta ja tähän vaikuttavat pääosin kaksi tekijää. Tärkein syy on selluloosananokuitujen kuivattamisen ja näin ollen nanopaperin muodostamisen vaatima huomattavan pitkä aika. Nykyisillä menetelmillä nanopaperin valmistaminen kestää useita tunteja. Toinen syy on niiden erittäin huono veden- ja kosteudenkestävyys. Ne menettävät jopa 90 % jäykkyydestään veden vaikutuksesta, mikä rajoittaa niiden käyttöä kosteissa ja vesiroiskeille alttiissa kohteissa. Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen päätavoitteena on löytää ekologisesti kestävä ja teollisuudessa hyödynnettävissä oleva menetelmä molempien edellä mainittujen ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi. Työssä noudatetaan kahta eri lähestymistapaa: lisätään selluloosananokuitujen hydrofobisuutta maitohapon ja ultrasonikoinnin avulla (Artikkelit I ja II), ja yhdistetään selluloosananokuituihin hydrofobisia materiaaleja, kuten polyuretaania (PU) (Artikkeli III) ja ligniinipitoisia yhdisteitä (Artikkeli IV). Näitä menetelmiä käyttämällä valmistusaikaa saatiin lyhennettyä 75 % (Artikkeli II) ja 70 % (Artikkeli IV). Kaikki valmistetut nanopaperit olivat huomattavasti veden- ja kosteudenkestävämpiä kuin verrokkinäytteet sekä osoittivat lämpöstabiiliutta. Lisäksi mekaanisia ominaisuuksia saatiin parannettua Artikkeleissa I ja IV. Tässä työssä käsitellään myös nopean kuivattamisen tärkeyttä selluloosananokuitulujitteisten paperituotteiden valmistuksessa. The High-spin states in $^{195}$Tl, populated through the $^{185,187}$Re($^{13}$C, xn) fusion evaporation reaction at the beam energy of 75 MeV, were studied using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA). More than 50 new γ transitions have been placed in the proposed level scheme which is extended up to the excitation energy of ≈ 5.6 MeV and spin=22.5ħ. Two pairs of degenerate bands based on two different quasi-particle configurations have been identified in this nucleus indicating the first observation of such bands in an odd-A nucleus in A∼190 region and signify the first evidence of multiple chiral bands in a nucleus in this region. The total Routhian surface calculations predict triaxial shapes for both the configurations and thereby, support the experimental observation. The importance of multiple neutron holes in the i13/2 orbital and the stability of shapes for these two configurations have been discussed.

In massive stars, the Ca41(n,α)Ar38 and K41(p,α)Ar38 reactions have been identified as the key reactions governing the abundance of Ca41, which is considered as a potential chronometer for solar system formation. So far, due to experimental limitations, the Ca41(n,α)Ar38 reaction rate is solely based on statistical model calculations. In the present study, we have measured the time-inverse Ar38(α,n)Ca41 and Ar38(α,p)K41 reactions using an active target detector. The reactions were studied in inverse kinematics using a 133-MeV Ar38 beam and He4 as the active-gas target. Both excitation functions were measured simultaneously in the energy range of 6.8≤Ec.m.≤9.3 MeV. Using detailed balance the Ca41(n,α)Ar38 and K41(p,α)Ar38 reaction rates were determined, which suggested a 20% increase in the Ca41 yield from massive stars.

The current work reports a novel, completely water based approach to prepare the water resistant modified cellulose nanopapers. Lactic acid in aqueous medium was attached on cellulose nanofibers surface with the aid of ultra-sonication and later oligomerized (polymerized) by compression molding under high temperature and pressure, to obtain the modified nanopapers with enhanced mechanical properties. The modified nanopapers showed an increase of 32% in the elastic modulus and 30% in the yield strength over reference nanopapers. Additionally, the modified nanopaper was hydrophobic in nature and had superior storage modulus under moist conditions. The storage modulus of wet modified nanopaper was three times (2.4 GPa) compared to the reference nanopapers (0.8 GPa) after 1 h immersion in water. Finally, the thermal stability of the modified nanopaper was also higher than reference nanopaper. The material reported is 100% bio-based.

A furan-based synthetic biopolymer composed of a bifuran monomer and ethylene glycol was synthesized through melt polycondensation, and the resulting polyester was found to have promising thermal and mechanical properties. The bifuran monomer, dimethyl 2,2′-bifuran-5,5′-dicarboxylate, was prepared using a palladium-catalyzed, phosphine ligand-free direct coupling protocol. A titanium-catalyzed polycondensation procedure was found effective at polymerizing the bifuran monomer with ethylene glycol. The prepared bifuran polyester exhibited several intriguing properties including high tensile modulus. In addition, the bifuran monomer furnished the polyester with a relatively high glass transition temperature. Films prepared from the new polyester also had excellent oxygen and water barrier properties, which were found to be superior to those of poly(ethylene terephthalate). Moreover, the novel polyester also has good ultraviolet radiation blocking properties.

The structure of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in the rare-earth region is of significant interest for both the astrophysics and nuclear structure fields. At present, a complete explanation for the observed peak in the elemental abundances at A∼160 eludes astrophysicists, and models depend on accurate quantities, such as masses, lifetimes, and branching ratios of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in this region. Unusual nuclear structure effects are also observed, such as the unexpectedly low energies of the first 2+ levels in some even-even nuclei at N=98. In order to address these issues, mass and β-decay spectroscopy measurements of the Eu97160 and Eu99162 nuclei were performed at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade radioactive beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Evidence for a gap in the single-particle neutron energies at N=98 and for large deformation (β2∼0.3) is discussed in relation to the unusual phenomena observed at this neutron number.

We report the first observation of the Xe108→Te104→Sn100 α-decay chain. The α emitters, Xe108 [Eα=4.4(2) MeV, T1/2=58-23+106 μs] and Te104 [Eα=4.9(2) MeV, T1/2

A beam containing a substantial component of both the Jπ=5+, T1/2=162 ns isomeric state of F18 and its 1+, 109.77-min ground state is utilized to study members of the ground-state rotational band in F19 through the neutron transfer reaction (d,p) in inverse kinematics. The resulting spectroscopic strengths confirm the single-particle nature of the 13/2+ band-terminating state. The agreement between shell-model calculations using an interaction constructed within the sd shell, and our experimental results reinforces the idea of a single-particle-collective duality in the descriptions of the structure of atomic nuclei.
