59. Effect of Mode of Representation on Visual Humor

Abstract

24 photographs representing four types of humor (aggression, superiority, incongruity, and the unexpected) were redrawn as cartoons and rated by 361 college students. Photographs were judged more humorous than cartoons, with additional effects related to type of humor and sex. The belief that an event really occurred, as found in photographs, may be important for effective visual humor.

60. Funny Women: Social Change and Audience Response to Female Comedians

Abstract

It is generally acknowledged that gender stereotypes have hindered the development and recognition of women's humor. In the face of rapid expansion of opportunities for women in the comedy field, previous social science analyses may be obsolete. The present researcher assessed response to male and female comedians in the mid-1970s and again in the early 1980s. Comparison of results revealed considerable change in contemporary evaluations of women comedians, whose ratings now equal those of male comics. As both men and women showed enhanced appreciation for comedians of their own gender, it is suggested that reference groups and social perception provide a basis for understanding the role exerted on humor appreciation by gender.

Abstract

This document combines four elements: a review of the socio-demographic context of citizen science, a literature review of learning in relation to citizen science, a community survey of training needs and a detailed analysis of a set of training resources. These four activities identified five distinct clusters of training needs/gaps: 1. Scientific Training: topic-specific training that targets scientific methodologies and issues. 2. Volunteer Management Training: topic-specific training that targets the engagement, maintenance and management of volunteer participants. 3. Critical / Reflexive / New Possibilities Training: is training for unrepresented & critical agendas as well as the inclusion of marginalised groups in citizen science such as art and culture, activism & social justice, ethics and legal questions as well as practical crafting and ‘making’ skills. 4. Schools Training: audience-specific training that is the most tightly focused training in that is targets teachers and young people in formal education. 5. Practical / Operational Training: training that covers the practical and operations processes, methods and tools required to run and communicate citizen science projects. The majority of the training material analysed requires at least one hour of training with some requiring more than a day to complete, which is a significant time investment. This research sets the foundations for a typology of citizen training needs that will be presented in forthcoming deliverable D5.2.

Abstract

This report aims to enhance our understanding of stakeholder mapping for co-created citizen science initiatives. It presents and discusses findings from an international two-day stakeholder mapping workshop with researchers, event organizers, communication experts, and artists realizing citizen science activities. Participants identified examples of co-creation in their work and mapped stakeholders for three co-creation initiatives from the "Doing It Together Science" project. For each case, we provide an overview of the stakeholder groups involved and the lessons derived from identifying actual and potential stakeholders in different phases of each activity and using different ways for mapping them. We demonstrate that not only stakeholder mapping can be diverse, but it may take different angles depending on the characteristics and project timescales, nevertheless adding significant value to any project. We argue that a better understanding of stakeholder involvement may contribute to more effective stakeholder communication, more successful implementation, and a greater impact for citizen science initiatives.

Abstract

Research efforts aimed at improving the crystal quality of solution-processed Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) absorbers have largely employed delicate pre- and postprocessing strategies, such as multistep selenization, heat treatment in mixed chalcogen atmospheres, and multinary extrinsic doping that are often complex and difficult to reproduce. On the other hand, understanding and tuning chemical interactions in precursor inks prior to the thin-film deposition have received significantly less attention. Herein, we show for the first time how the complexation of metallic and chalcogen precursors in solution have a stark influence on the crystallization and optoelectronic quality of CZTSSe absorbers. By varying thiourea to metal cation ratios (TU/M) in dimethylformamide (DMF) and isopropyl alcohol (IPA)-based inks, we observed the formation of nanoscale metal-organic complexes and submicron size aggregates which play a key role in the morphology of the precursor layers obtained by spin-coating and drying steps. We also identify the primary cations in the complexation and assembling processes in solution. The morphology of the precursor film, in turn, has an important effect on grain growth and film absorber structure after the reactive annealing in the presence of Se. Finally, we establish a link between metal complexes in precursor solutions and device performance, with power conversion efficiency increasing from approximately 2 to 8% depending on the TU/M and Cu/(Zn + Sn) ratios.
