Search

A new type of solar neutron detector (SEDA-FIB) was launched on board the Space Shuttle Endeavor on July 16 2009, and began collecting data at the International Space Station (ISS) on August 25 2009. This paper summarizes four years of observations with the solar neutron detector SEDA-FIB (Space Environment Data Acquisition using the FIBer detector). The solar neutron detector FIB can determine both the energy and arrival direction of solar neutrons. In this paper, we first present the angular distribution of neutron induced protons obtained in Monte Carlo simulations. The results are compared with the experimental results. Then we provide the angular distribution of background neutrons during one full orbit of the ISS (90 minutes). Next, the angular distribution of neutrons during the flare onset time from 20:02 to 20:10 UT on March 7 2011 is presented. It is compared with the distribution when a solar flare is not occurring. Observed solar neutrons possibly originated from the M-class solar flares that occurred on March 7 (M3.7), June 7 (M2.5), September 24 (M3.0) (weak signal) and November 3 (X1.9) of 2011 and January 23 of 2012 (M8.7). This marked the first time that neutrons have been observed from M-class solar flares. The relationship between solar activity and the global climate is not only an academically interesting issue, but also an important problem for human beings. Lean and Rind have analyzed a considerable amount of climate data from around the world from 1889 to 2006. According to their analysis, the global effect was estimated to be 0.17 plus-minus 0.01K between the solar maximum and minimum. However, they noticed that the effect strongly appeared in the zones between 70N and 30N, and between 25S and 50S. At its peak latitude (near 40), the effect was estimated to be 0.5 K. Therefore, we analyzed a tree that survived at the Murooji temple in Nara prefecture (34d32mN, 136d2mE) Japan, for 391 years. Quite surprisingly, Fourier analysis of the annual growth rate identified two cycles with periodicities of 12 and 25 years during the Maunder minimum. We have continued the analysis, using different samples from the Nagusa shrine in Hyogo Prefecture, Itayanagi City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and from Yaku Island in Kyusyu, Japan. An evidence of solar activity was found in all of the samples. On March 7, 2011 from 19:48:00 to 20:03:00 UT, the solar neutron telescope located at Mt. Sierra Negra, Mexico (4,600m) observed a 8.8sigma enhancement. In this paper, we would like to try to explain this enhancement by a hypothesis that a few GeV gamma-rays arrived at the top of the mountain produced by the Sun. We postulate that protons were accelerated at the shock front. They precipitate at the solar surface and produced those gamma-rays. If hypothesis is confirmed, this enhancement is the first sample of GeV gamma-rays observed by a ground level detector., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

We measured the energy spectra of background neutrons over the SAA region and elsewhere, and found the typical trigger rates to be 20 counts/sec and 0.22 counts/sec, respectively. It is possible to identify solar neutrons to within a level of 0.028 counts/sec, provided that directional information is applied. Solar neutrons were observed in association with the M-class solar flares that occurred on March 7 (M3.7) and June 7 (M2.5) of 2011. This marked the first time that neutrons were observed in M-class solar flares. A two-dimensional electrodynamic model is used to study particle acceleration and non-thermal emission mechanisms in the pulsar magnetospheres. We solve distribution of the accelerating electric field with the emission process and the pair-creation process in meridional plane, which includes the rotational axis and the magnetic axis. By solving the evolutions of the Lorentz factor, and of the pitch angle, we calculate spectrum in optical through $\gamma$-ray bands with the curvature radiation, synchrotron radiation, and inverse-Compton process not only for outgoing particles, but also for ingoing particles, which were ignored in previous studies. We apply the theory to the Vela pulsar. We find that the curvature radiation from the outgoing particles is the major emission process above 10 MeV bands. In soft $\gamma$-ray to hard X-ray bands, the synchrotron radiation from the ingoing primary particles in the gap dominates in the spectrum. Below hard X-ray bands, the synchrotron emissions from both outgoing and ingoing particles contribute to the calculated spectrum. The calculated spectrum is consistent with the observed phase-averaged spectrum of the Vela pulsar. We show that the observed five-peak pulse profile in the X-ray bands of the Vela pulsar is reproduced by the inward and outward emissions, and the observed double-peak pulse profile in $\gamma$-ray bands is explained by the outward emissions., Comment: 26pages, 8figures, accepted to publish in MNRAS

We report here on the first pointed X-ray observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) G330.2+1.0. The X-ray morphology is characterized by an extended shell. Its X-ray spectrum is well represented by a single power-law function with a photon index of $\gamma\simeq 2.8$ and interstellar absorption of $n_{\rm H}\simeq2.6\times 10^{22}$[cm$^{-2}$]. We interpret this emission as synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons at the SNR shock, as seen in SN 1006. The surface brightness of the X-ray emission is anti-correlated with the radio emission, and the power-law spectrum is dominated at the western shell where the radio emission is weak. The co-existence of two distinct (radio bright/X-ray faint and radio faint/X-ray bright) shells in a single supernova remnant challenges our understanding of the particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms in different interstellar environments. The object may be a good target for searching TeV gamma-rays and molecular gas surrounding the blast shock. A two-dimensional electrodynamical model is used to study particle acceleration in the outer magnetosphere of a pulsar. The charge depletion from the Goldreich-Julian charge density causes a large electric field along the magnetic field lines. The charge particles are accelerated by the electric field and emit $\gamma$-rays via the curvature process. Some of the emitted $\gamma$-rays may collide with $X$-ray photons to make new pairs, which are accelerated again on the different field lines in the gap and proceed similar processes. We simulate the pair creation cascade in the meridional plane using the pair creation mean-free path, in which the $X$-ray photon number density is proportional to inverse square of radial distance. With the space charge density determined by the pair creation simulation, we solve the electric structure of the outer gap in the meridional plane and calculate the curvature spectrum. Because the two-dimensional model can link both gap width along the magnetic field line and trans-field thickness with the spectral cut-off energy and flux, we can diagnose both the current through the gap and inclination angle between the rotational and magnetic axes. We apply the theory to the Vela pulsar. By comparing the results with the $EGRET$ data, we rule out any cases that have a large particle injection at the outer boundary. We also suggest the inclination angle of $\alpha_{inc}\geq65^{\circ}$. During the period when the Sun was intensely active on October-November 2003, two remarkable solar neutron events were observed by the ground-based neutron monitors. On October 28, 2003, in association with an X17.2 large flare, solar neutrons were detected with high statistical significance (6.4 sigma) by the neutron monitor at Tsumeb, Namibia. On November 4, 2003, in association with an X28 class flare, relativistic solar neutrons were observed by the neutron monitors at Haleakala in Hawaii and Mexico City, and by the solar neutron telescope at Mauna Kea in Hawaii simultaneously. Clear excesses were observed at the same time by these detectors, with the significance calculated as 7.5 sigma for Haleakala, and 5.2 sigma for Mexico City. The detector onboard the INTEGRAL satellite observed a high flux of hard X-rays and gamma-rays at the same time in these events. By using the time profiles of the gamma-ray lines, we can explain the time profile of the neutron monitor. We investigate the electrodynamics of an outer gap in the meridional plane of the aligned-rotator. The charge depletion from the Goldreich-Julian charge density causes a large electric field along the magnetic field line. The electrons or the positrons are accelerated by the field-aligned electric field and radiate the $\gamma$-rays tangentially to the local magnetic field line. Some of such $\gamma$-rays collide with $X$-rays to materialize as the electron-positron pairs on different field lines from the field line on which they were emitted. As a result, the electric field structure is expected to change across the field lines. Including these trans-field effects, we solve the formation of the electric field self-consistently with the curvature radiation and the pair creation processes. The $\gamma$-ray emission and the pair creation are treated by use of Monte Carlo technique. We demonstrate that the distribution of the electric field along the field lines is affected by both the gap geometry and the external currents coming into the gap through the boundaries. In the electrodynamical model, it has been known that the solution disappears if the current density carried by the electron-positron pairs produced in the gap exceeds a critical value. We show that the critical current density is significantly increased when the trans-field structure is taken into account. We also find that the location of the inner boundary of the gap shifts toward the stellar surface from the conventional null surface as the current density increases. The reason for the shift is derived from the stability condition of the inner boundary. We also argue that the ideal-MHD condition holds outside of the gap only when the low energy particles coexist with the high energy particles migrating from the gap., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures. We present spectral analysis of the Crab Nebula obtained with the {\it Chandra} X-ray observatory. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a power-law whose index varies across the nebula. The variation can be discussed in terms of the particle injection from the pulsar in two different directions: the equatorial plane containing the torus and the symmetry axis along the jet. In the equatorial plane, spectra within the torus are the hardest, with photon index $\alpha \approx 1.9$, and are almost independent of the surface brightness. At the periphery of the torus, the spectrum gradually softens in the outer, lower surface brightness regions, up to $\alpha \approx 3.0$. This indicates that synchrotron losses become significant to X-ray emitting particles at the outer boundary of the torus. We discuss the nature of the torus, incorporating information from observations at other wavelengths. Spectral variations are also seen within the southern jet. The core of the jet is the hardest with $\alpha \approx$ 2.0, and the outer sheath surrounding the core becomes softer with $\alpha$ up to 2.5 at the outermost part. Based on the similarity between the spectra of the jet core and the torus, we suggest that the electron spectra of the particles injected from the pulsar are also similar in these two different directions. The brightness ratio between the near and far sides of the torus can be explained by Doppler boosting and relativistic aberration; however, the observed ratio cannot be derived from the standard weakly magnetized pulsar wind model. We investigate the $\gamma$-ray emission from a outer-gap accelerator, which is located in the outer-magnetosphere of a pulsar. The charge depletion from the Goldreich-Julian density causes a large electric field along the magnetic field lines. The electric field accelerates electrons and positrons to high energies. We solve the formation of the electric field self-consistently with the radiation and the pair-creation processes in one-dimensional geometry along the magnetic field lines, and calculate curvature spectrum to compare with the observations. We find that because the particles escape from the accelerating region with large Lorentz factors as $10^{7.5}$, curvature radiation from the outside of the gap, in which there is no electric field, still has a important contribution to the spectrum. Including the outside emission, the model spectra are improved between 100 MeV and 1 GeV for the Vela-type pulsars. Since the field line curvature close to the light cylinder affects the spectrum in several hundred MeV, there is a possibility to diagnose the field structure by using the spectrum in these bands. The difference found in the $\gamma$-ray spectra of the twin pulsars, PSR B0833-45 (Vela) and B1706-44, is deduced from the dimensionless electric current running through the gap. We present year-scale morphological variations of the Crab Nebula revealed by Chandra X-ray observatory. Observations have been performed about every 1.7 years over the 3 years from its launch. The variations are clearly recognized at two sites: the torus and the southern jet. The torus, which had been steadily expanding until 1.7 years ago, now appears to have shrunk in the latest observation. Additionally, the circular structures seen to the northeast of the torus have decayed into several arcs. On the other hand, the southern jet shows the growth of its overall kinked-structure. An axisymmetric model for the Crab Nebula is constructed to examine the flow dynamics in the nebula. The model is based on that of Kennel and Coroniti (1984), although we assume that the kinetic-energy-dominant wind is confined in an equatorial region. The evolution of the distribution function of the electron-positron plasma flowing out in the nebula is calculated. Given viewing angles, we reproduce an image of the nebula and compare it with Chandra observation. The reproduced image is not a ring-like but rather 'lip-shaped'. It is found that the assumption of toroidal field does not reproduce the Chandra image. We must assume that there is disordered magnetic field with an amplitude as large as the mean toroidal field. In addition, the brightness contrast between the front and back sides of the ring cannot be reproduced if we assume that the magnetization parameter $\sigma$ is as small as $\sim 10^{-3}$. The brightness profile along the semi-major axis of the torus is also examined. The non-dissipative, ideal-MHD approximation in the nebula appears to break down. We speculate that if the magnetic energy is released by some process that produce turbulent field in the nebula flow and causes heating and acceleration, e.g. by magnetic reconnection, then the present difficulties may be resolved (i.e. we can reproduce a ring image, and a higher brightness contrast). Thus, the magnetization parameter $\sigma$ can be larger than previously expected., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. accepted for publication in MNRAS

We construct an axisymmetric model for the Crab Nebula. The flow dyamics is based on the model by Kennel and Coroniti (1984), but we assume that the kinetic-energy-dominant wind is confined in the equatorial region. We reproduce spacially resolved spectra which agree well with the Chandra results. However, the reproduced image is not a ring but lip-shaped. In addition, brightness contrast between fore and back sides of the ring cannot be reproduced if we assumes that the sigma-parameter is as small as 10**-3. We suggest that the nebula field is highly disordered due to for instance magnetic reconnection. We study self-consistency for the pulsar polar cap model. In general, there will remain an unscreened electric field at the pair production front (PPF). We have derived the condition of electric field screening by pairs in the presence of returning particles. A previous belief that pairs with a density higher than the Goldreich-Julian density immediately screen out the electric field beyond PPF is unjustified. Pairs have little contribution on screening the electric field, and the geometrical screening is the only known way of getting a finite potential drop., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. This paper deals with the Crab Nebula problem to suggest that particle acceleration takes place not only at the inner shock but also over a larger region in the nebula with disordered magnetic field. Kennel and Cornoniti (1984) constructed a spherically symmetric model of the Crab Nebula and concluded that the pulsar wind which excites the nebular is kinetic-energy dominant (KED) because the nebula flow induced by KED wind is favorable to explain the nebula spectrum and expansion speed. This is true even with new Chandra observation, which provides newly the spatially resolved spectra. We study on the self-consistency of the pulsar polar cap model, i.e., the problem of whether the field-aligned electric field is screened by electron-positron pairs that are injected beyond the pair production front. We solve the one-dimensional Poisson equation along a magnetic field line, both analytically and numerically, for a given current density incorporating effects of returning positrons, and we obtain the conditions for the electric-field screening. The formula which we obtained gives the screening distance and the return flux for given primary current density, field geometry and pair creation rate at the pair production front. If the geometrical screening is not possible, for instance, on field lines with a super-Goldreich-Julian current, then the electric field at the pair production front is constrained to be fairly small in comparison with values expected typically by the conventional polar cap models. This is because (1) positive space charge by pair polarization is limited to a small value, and (2) returning of positrons leave pair electrons behind. A previous belief that pair creation with a pair density higher than the Goldreich-Julian density immediately screens out the electric field is unjustified at least for for a super Goldreich-Julian current density. We report the B band optical observations of an old (17.5 Myr) radiopulsar PSR B0950+08 obtained with the Suprime-Cam at the Subaru telescope. We detected a faint object, B=27.07(16). Within our astrometrical accuracy it coincides with the radio position of the pulsar and with the object detected earlier by Pavlov et al. (1996) in UV with the HST/FOC/F130LP. The positional coincidence and spectral properties of the object suggest that it is the optical counterpart of PSR B0950+08. Its flux in the B band is two times higher than one would expect from the suggested earlier Rayleigh-Jeans interpretation of the only available HST observations in the adjacent F130LP band. Based on the B and F130LP photometry of the suggested counterpart and on the available X-ray data we argue in favour of nonthermal origin of the broad-band optical spectrum of PSR B0950+08, as it is observed for the optical emission of the younger, middle-aged pulsars PSR B0656+14 and Geminga. At the same time, the optical efficiency of PSR B0950+08, estimated from its spin-down power and the detected optical flux, is by several orders of magnitude higher than for these pulsars, and comparable with that for the much younger and more energetic Crab pulsar. We cannot exclude the presence of a compact, about 1'', faint pulsar nebula around PSR B0950+08, elongated perpendicular to the vector of its proper motion, unless it is not a projection of a faint extended object on the pulsar position., Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, aa.cls style, 5 PS figures, submitted to A&A. ASCA's long look at the 288 millisecond radio pulsar, PSR J0631+1036, reveals coherent X-ray pulsation from this source for the first time. The source was first detected in the serendipitous Einstein observation and later identified as a radio pulsar. Possible pulsation in the gamma-ray band has been detected from the CGRO EGRET data (Zepka, et al. 1996). The X-ray spectrum in the ASCA band is characterized by a hard power-law type emission with a photon index of about 2.3, when fitted with a single power-law function modified with absorption. An additional blackbody component of about 0.14 keV increases the quality of the spectral fit. The observed X-ray flux is 2.1e-13 ergs/s/cm2 in the 1-10 keV band. We find that many characteristics of PSR J0631+1036 are similar to those of middle-aged gamma-ray pulsars such as PSR B1055-52, PSR B0633+17 (Geminga), and PSR B0656+14., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters

We investigate a stationary pair production cascade in the outer magnetosphere of a spinning neutron star. The charge depletion due to global flows of charged particles, causes a large electric field along the magnetic field lines. Migratory electrons and/or positrons are accelerated by this field to radiate curvature gamma-rays, some of which collide with the X-rays to materialize as pairs in the gap. The replenished charges partially screen the electric field, which is self-consistently solved together with the distribution functions of particles and gamma-rays. If no current is injected at neither of the boundaries of the accelerator, the gap is located around the conventional null surface, where the local Goldreich-Julian charge density vanishes. However, we first find that the gap position shifts outwards (or inwards) when particles are injected at the inner (or outer) boundary. Applying the theory to the Crab pulsar, we demonstrate that the pulsed TeV flux does not exceed the observational upper limit for moderate infrared photon density and that the gap should be located near to or outside of the conventional null surface so that the observed spectrum of pulsed GeV fluxes may be emitted via a curvature process. We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of PSR J0218+4232 which, for the first time, provides detailed information on the pulsar's temporal and spectral emission properties in the broad band 1-10 keV. We detected X-ray pulses with a pulsed fraction of 73 +/- 12 %. The pulse profile is characterized by two peaks phase separated by 0.47 +/-0.05. The pulsed spectrum is best described by a power-law of photon index 0.61 +/- 0.32 with an unabsorbed (2-10 keV) X-ray flux of 4.1E-13 erg/cm^2/s implying a luminosity of Lx = 1.3E32 Theta (d/5.7 kpc})^2 erg/s and an X-ray efficiency of 4.8E-4 Theta (d/5.7 kpc})^2 where Theta is the solid angle spanned by the emission beam., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication on A&A
