59. On shock waves and the role of hyperthermal chemistry in the early diffusion of overdense meteor trains

Abstract

Studies of meteor trails have until now been limited to relatively simple models, with the trail often being treated as a conducting cylinder, and the head (if considered at all) treated as a ball of ionized gas. In this article, we bring the experience gleaned from other fields to the domain of meteor studies, and adapt this prior knowledge to give a much clearer view of the microscale physics and chemistry involved in meteor-trail formation, with particular emphasis on the first 100 or so milliseconds of the trail formation.We discuss and examine the combined physicochemical effects of meteor-generated and ablationally amplified cylindrical shock waves that appear in the ambient atmosphere immediately surrounding the meteor train, as well as the associated hyperthermal chemistry on the boundaries of the high temperature post-adiabatically expanding meteor train. We demonstrate that the cylindrical shock waves produced by overdense meteors are sufficiently strong to dissociate molecules in the ambient atmosphere when it is heated to temperatures in the vicinity of 6000 K, which substantially alters the considerations of the chemical processes in and around the meteor train.We demonstrate that some ambient O2, along with O2 that comes from the shock dissociation of O3, survives the passage of the cylindrical shock wave, and these constituents react thermally with meteor metal ions, thereby subsequently removing electrons from the overdense meteor train boundary through fast, temperature-independent, dissociative recombination governed by the second Damköhler number. Possible implications for trail diffusion and lifetimes are discussed. © 2017 The Authors.

Abstract

Objective parameters are needed to quantify cerebral dysfunction following cardiac surgery in outcome and comparative studies. In this investigation we assessed the value of the late auditory evoked potentials N100 and P300 to measure the neuropsychological deficit after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). N100, an exogenous potential is influenced by the stimulus pattern (frequency, intensity and stimulus presentation rate). P300, an endogenous potential, depends on the cognitive processing invoked by the stimulus. With approval of the Human Investigation Committee and the patients' consents, 52 subjects undergoing elective CABG were enrolled. Operation, extracorporal circulation, anesthesia and postoperative intensive care were standardized. Twenty-channel recordings of N100 and P300 were obtained for off-line analysis. P300 was elicited using an oddball paradigm with rare target tones interspersed among frequent non-target tones. Additionally, neuropsychological tests (syndrome short test SKT and letter cancellation test) were carried out. Neurological examination and all tests were compared preoperatively and one week postoperatively. A significant deterioration in cerebral function was documented by the SKT score (P = 0.04), an increase in P300 latency (P = 0.004) and an increase of mistake rate in counting the P300 target tone (P = 0.02). No differences between preoperative and postoperative testing were found for letter cancellation, P300 amplitude and any N100 parameter. No correlation was found between the preoperative/postoperative changes in SKT score and P300 latency. P300 was proved to be an objective neurophysiological parameter that allows for the quantification of cerebral function after CABG.

Abstract

Peste des petits ruminants ( PPR) is a contagious and often fatal disease affecting sheep and goats. Currently, it is endemic in Africa, the Middle and Near East, the Indian subcontinent and China. Understanding the molecular epidemiology and evolution of PPR virus ( PPRV) can assist in the control of the transboundary spread of this economically important disease. We isolated PPRV from pathological and swab samples collected 42 years apart (1969 and 2011) in Benin, West Africa, and sequenced the full genome of two isolates (Benin/B1/1969 and Benin/10/2011). Phylogenetic analysis showed that all of the characterized isolates clustered within viral lineage II and that the 2011 isolates fell into two distinct subgroups. Comparison of the full genome sequences revealed a 95.3% identity at the nucleotide level, while at the protein level, the matrix protein was the most conserved between the two viruses with an identity of 99.7% and only one amino acid substitution over the 42-year sampling period. An analysis of specific amino acid residues of known or putative function did not identify any significant changes between the two viruses. A molecular clock analysis of complete PPRV genomes revealed that the lineage II viruses sampled here arose in the early 1960s and that these viruses have likely persisted in Benin since this time. Faktoren, die die funktionelle Erholung von hibernating myocardium nach aortokoronarem Venen Bypass (ACVB) beeinflussen, werden gegenwärtig untersucht. Von 3/2000 bis 3/2003 untersuchten wir prospektiv 41 Patienten mit einer linksventrikulären Ejektionsfraktion (LVEF), Objectives: Factors that influence functional recovery of hibernating myocardium after coronary artery bypass grafting are at present under investigation. Methods: From 3/2000 to 3/2003 we prospectively analyzed 41 patients with ejection fraction (EF) 15% during DE in group I preoperatively; the increase was < 15% in group II. MRI hyperenhancement was measured with a mean of 16,7±11,6% of the left ventricle in group I compared to a mean of 27,4±14,4% in group II (p 19µm) in group I than in group II (< 17µm).
