Physical activity is important for the health of all individuals, however, the determinants of physical activity behaviour for women who are overweight remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this investigation was to explore a range of factors that influence participation in physical activity for a group of women who are overweight. Participants were 30 women, aged 25-71 years, with a mean age of 46.8 years (+12.95) and an average BMI of 31.2kg/m(2) (+5.6). Self-reported level of physical activity, perceived barriers and facilitators of physical activity, attitudes, intentions and perceived behavioural control to physical activity were measured. Seventeen participants were generally active, with self-reported moderate physical activity of 218.53min (+/-113.82) in the last 7 days; whereas 13 participants were reportedly less active 43.46 (+/-42.98)min. Active participants were more likely to identify social reasons for participating in physical activity, while inactive participants perceived that their laziness prevented them from being physically active. There were no significant differences between active and inactive overweight women for attitude, intention or subjective norm for moderate-intensity physical activity. There was a significant difference between these women in perceived behavioural control (p=.014) for moderate-intensity physical activity, as women who felt more in control of their physical activity behaviour were more likely to engage in physical activity than inactive women. These guidelines were commissioned by the British Association of Dermatologists guidelines and therapeutics subcommittee. These guidelines have been prepared for dermatologists on behalf of the British Association of Dermatologists and the U.K. Cutaneous Lymphoma Group (UKCLG) and reflect the best data available at the time the report was prepared. Caution should be exercised in interpreting the data; the results of future studies may require alteration of the conclusions or recommendations in this report. It may be necessary or even desirable to depart from the guidelines in special circumstances. Just as adherence to guidelines may not constitute defence against a claim of negligence, so deviation from them should not be necessarily deemed negligent. These guidelines for the management of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma have been prepared for dermatologists on behalf of the British Association of Dermatologists and the U.K. Cutaneous Lymphoma Group. They present evidence-based guidance for treatment, with identification of the strength of evidence available at the time of preparation of the guidelines, and a brief overview of epidemiological aspects, diagnosis and investigation. The article describes the case of a 49-year-old Caucasian homosexual first presented to St. John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in 1979 at the age of 40 years. At that time he had a purple nodule on the left ear which clinically resembled a pyogenic granuloma. Excision of this lesion revealed the typical histological features of Kaposi's sarcoma comprising a dermal tumour with spindle-cell proliferation and numerous slit-like spaces containing red blood cells. The slight impairment of monocyte phagocytosis and evidence of cutaneous anergy may represent a state of mild immunosuppression, not manifested by measurement in other parameters, which could account for the benign course of the Kaposi's sarcoma in this AIDS-risk patient.

Thirteen patients were entered into an uncontrolled pilot study to investigate the response to, and toxicity of, a combination of cisplatinum (20 mg/m2) and bleomycin (6 mg/m2) infused daily for 5 days and repeated every 21 days up to a maximum of 4 cycles, in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the bronchus. This regimen was subsequently followed by a split course of local irradiation. All patients have been followed to death. Six patients showed a partial response to chemotherapy while 7 showed no response or progressive disease. The median survival was 5 months. The median survival of the responders was 15 months and that of the nonresponders 3 months. Two patients developed the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion from which one died. The longest survivor, who died 26 months after the commencement of chemotherapy, had severe mediastinal and pulmonary fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of extensive cutaneous necrosis in a patient with tumour-stage mycosis fungoides is described. Skin biopsies showed a lymphomatous infiltrate, and thrombosis of dermal blood vessels. Investigation revealed the presence of anticardiolipin antibodies, a lupus anticoagulant, and low free protein S, which contributed to a prothrombotic state. Antiphospholipid antibodies have been detected in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but clinical manifestations are uncommon. Such autoantibodies may be produced by neoplastic lymphoid cells. The frequency with which antiphospholipid antibodies occur in mycosis fungoides is currently unknown. \ [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
