In this third paper of the MOVES (Multiwavelength Observations of an eVaporating Exoplanet and its Star) programme, we combine Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations with XMM–Newton / Swift X-ray observations to measure the emission of HD 189733 in various FUV lines, and its soft X-ray spectrum. Based on these measurements we characterize the interstellar medium towards HD 189733 and derive semisynthetic XUV spectra of the star, which are used to study the evolution of its high-energy emission at five different epochs. Two flares from HD 189733 are observed, but we propose that the long-term variations in its spectral energy distribution have the most important consequences for the environment of HD 189733b. Reduced coronal and wind activity could favour the formation of a dense population of Si2+ atoms in a bow-shock ahead of the planet, responsible for pre- and in-transit absorption measured in the first two epochs. In-transit absorption signatures are detected in the Lyman α line in the second, third, and fifth epochs, which could arise from the extended planetary thermosphere and a tail of stellar wind protons neutralized via charge-exchange with the planetary exosphere. We propose that increases in the X-ray irradiation of the planet, and decreases in its EUV irradiation causing lower photoionization rates of neutral hydrogen, favour the detection of these signatures by sustaining larger densities of H0 atoms in the upper atmosphere and boosting charge-exchanges with the stellar wind. Deeper and broader absorption signatures in the last epoch suggest that the planet entered a different evaporation regime, providing clues as to the link between stellar activity and the structure of the planetary environment. Context. Globular clusters (GCs) host multiple populations of stars that are well-separated in a photometric diagram - the chromosome map - built from specific Hubble Space Telescope (HST) filters. Stars from different populations feature at various locations on this diagram due to peculiar chemical compositions. Stars of the first population, with field star-like abundances, sometimes show an unexpected extended distribution in the chromosome map. Aims. We aim to investigate the role of binaries and chromospheric emission on HST photometry of globular clusters' stars. We quantify their respective effects on the position of stars in the chromosome map, especially among the first population. Methods. We computed atmosphere models and synthetic spectra for stars of different chemical compositions, based on isochrones produced by stellar evolution calculations with abundance variations representative of first and second populations in GCs. From this we built synthetic chromosome maps for a mixture of stars of different chemical compositions. We subsequently replaced a fraction of stars with binaries, or stars with chromospheric emission, using synthetic spectroscopy. We studied how the position of stars is affected in the chromosome map. Results. Binaries can, in principle, explain the extension of the first population in the chromosome map. However, we find that given the binary fraction reported for GCs, the density of stars in the extended part is too small. Another difficulty of the binary explanation is that the shape of the distribution of the first population in the chromosome map is different in clusters with similar binary fractions. Also, the decrease of the binary fraction with radius is not mirrored in the shape of the chromosome map. Additionally, we find that the contribution of chromospheric emission lines to the HST photometry is too small to have an observable impact on the shape of the chromosome map. Continuum chromospheric emission has an effect qualitatively similar to binaries. Conclusions. We conclude that binaries do have an impact on the morphology of the chromosome map of GCs, but they are unlikely to explain entirely the shape of the extended distribution of the first population stars. Uncertainties in the properties of continuum chromospheric emission of stars in GCs prevent any quantitative conclusion. Therefore, the origin of the extended first population remains unexplained. Context. Studying chromospheric activity of contact binaries is an effective way of revealing the magnetic activity processes of these systems. One efficient but somewhat neglected method for this purpose is to follow the changes of the Hff line profiles via optical spectroscopy. Aims. Our goal is to perform a comprehensive preliminary analysis based on the optical spectral signs of chromospheric activity on the largest sample of contact binaries to date. Methods. We collected optical echelle spectra on 12 bright contact binaries in 17 nights. We derived new radial velocity curves from our observations. For quantifying the apparent chromospheric activity levels of the systems, we subtracted self-constructed synthetic spectra from the observed ones and measured the equivalent widths of the residual Hff-profiles at each observed epoch. Our wellsampled data set allowed us to study the short-term variations of chromospheric activity levels as well as to search for correlations between them and some basic physical parameters of the systems. Results. Fitting the radial velocity curves, we re-determined the mass ratios and systemic velocities of all observed objects. We found that chromospheric activity levels of the studied systems show various changes during the orbital revolution: we see either flat, onepeaked, or two-peaked distributions of equivalent width vs. the orbital phase. The first case means that the activity level is probably constant, while the latter two cases suggest the presence of one or two active longitudes at the stellar surfaces. Our correlation diagrams show that mean chromospheric activity levels may be related to the orbital periods, B-V color indices, inverse Rossby numbers, and temperature differences of the components. At the same time, no clear trend is visible with respect to the mass ratios, inclinations, or fill-out factors of the systems. We determine the exact physical parameters of the four Hyades cluster K giants, using their parallaxes and atmospheric modelling of our red-channel TIGRE high-resolution spectra. Performing a comparison with well-tested evolutionary tracks, we derive exact masses and evolutionary stages. At an age of 588 (±60) Myr and with a metallicity of Z  = 0.03 (consistent with the spectroscopic abundances), we find HD 27371 and HD 28307, the two less bright K giants, at the onset of central helium burning, entering their blue loops with a mass of 2.62 M⊙, while the slightly brighter stars HD 28305 and HD 27697 are already exiting their blue loop. Their more advanced evolution suggests a higher mass of 2.75 M⊙. Notably, this pairing coincides with the different activity levels, which we find for these four stars from chromospheric activity monitoring with TIGRE and archival Mount Wilson data as well as from ROSAT coronal detections. The two less evolved K giants are the far more active pair, and we confidently confirm their rotation with periods of about 142 d. This work therefore provides some first, direct evidence of magnetic braking during the 130 Myr lasting phase of central helium-burning, similar to what has long been known to occur to cool main-sequence stars. The aim of the current study is the computation of the magnetic flux tube wave energies and fluxes generated in the convection zone of Procyon A. This is a subgiant of spectral type F5 IV-V showing chromospheric and coronal activities. The mechanisms responsible for the generation of different wave modes include the interaction of the thin and vertically oriented magnetic flux tube embedded in magnetic-free regions with turbulence in the convection zone of Procyon A. We are considering longitudinal, transverse, and acoustic wave modes. Turbulence in the convection zone is modelled by the extended Kolmogorov turbulent energy spectrum and the modified Gaussian frequency factor. Different magnetic flux tube models with different degrees of magnetic activities were considered. The current approach takes the non-linear effects into consideration. The results show that there is enough wave energy in the three different forms to heat the outer layers of the star. The obtained acoustic wave energies are larger than those of the longitudinal tube wave energies compared to the solar case. This can be explained by the relatively low magnetic field strength. On the other side, our computations show the importance of the transverse wave energies compared to the energies carried by the longitudinal waves. The former waves carry energy several (between 2 and 14) times higher than the latter. The obtained wave energies are essential for constructing time-dependent model chromospheres and for the predictions of atmospheric oscillations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stellar magnetic activity decays over the main-sequence life of cool stars due to the stellar spin-down driven by magnetic braking. The evolution of chromospheric emission is well studied for younger stars, but difficulties in determining the ages of older cool stars on the main sequence have complicated such studies for older stars in the past. Here, we report on chromospheric Ca  ii H and K line measurements for 26 main-sequence cool stars with asteroseismic ages older than a gigayear and spectral types F and G. We find that for the G stars and the cooler F-type stars that still have convective envelopes the magnetic activity continues to decrease at stellar ages above 1 Gyr. Our magnetic activity measurements do not show evidence for a stalling of the magnetic braking mechanism, which has been reported for stellar rotation versus age for G- and F-type stars. We also find that the measured |$R^{\prime }_{\mathrm{ HK}}$| indicator value for the cool F stars in our sample is lower than predicted by common age–activity relations that are mainly calibrated on data from young stellar clusters. We conclude that, within individual spectral type bins, chromospheric magnetic activity correlates well with stellar age even for old stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Chromospheric activity cycles are common in late-type stars; however, only a handful of coronal activity cycles have been discovered. ι Hor is the most active and youngest star with known coronal cycles. It is also a young solar analog, and we are likely facing the earliest cycles in the evolution of solar-like stars, at an age (~600 Myr) when life appeared on Earth. Aims. Our aim is to confirm the ~1.6 yr coronal cycle and characterize its stability over time. We use X-ray observations of ι Hor to study the corona of a star representing the solar past through variability, thermal structure, and coronal abundances. Methods. We analyzed multi-wavelength observations of ι Hor using XMM-Newton, TESS, and HST data. We monitored ι Hor throughout almost seven years in X-rays and in two UV bands. The summed RGS and STIS spectra were used for a detailed thermal structure model, and the determination of coronal abundances. We studied rotation and flares in the TESS light curve. Results. We find a stable coronal cycle along four complete periods, more than covered in the Sun. There is no evidence for a second longer X-ray cycle. Coronal abundances are consistent with photospheric values, discarding any effects related to the first ionization potential. From the TESS light curve we derived the first photometric measurement of the rotation period (8.2 d). No flares were detected in the TESS light curve of ι Hor. We estimate the probability of having detected zero flares with TESS to be ~2%. Conclusions. We corroborate the presence of an activity cycle of ~1.6 yr in ι Hor in X-rays, more regular than its Ca II H&K counterpart. A decoupling of the activity between the northern and southern hemispheres of the star might explain the disagreement. The inclination of the system would result in an irregular behavior in the chromospheric indicators. The more extended coronal material would be less sensitive to this effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The quiet M2.5 star GJ 436 hosts a warm Neptune that displays an extended atmosphere that dwarfs its own host star. Predictions of atmospheric escape in such planets state that H atoms escape from the upper atmosphere in a collisional regime and that the flow can drag heavier atoms to the upper atmosphere. It is unclear, however, what astrophysical mechanisms drive the process. Aims. Our objective is to leverage the extensive coverage of observations of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of GJ 436 obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) to search for signals of metallic ions in the upper atmosphere of GJ 436 b, as well as study the activity-induced variability of the star. Methods. We analyzed flux time-series of species present in the FUV spectrum of GJ 436 and successfully performed geocoronal contamination removal in the COS Lyman-α profiles obtained near the Earth's night-side. Results. GJ 436 displays flaring events with a rate of ~10 d−1. There is evidence for a possibly long-lived active region or longitude that modulates the FUV metallic lines of the star with amplitudes up to 20%. Despite the strong geocoronal contamination in the COS spectra, we detected in-transit excess absorption signals of ~50 and ~30% in the blue and red wings, respectively, of the Lyman-α line. We rule out a wide range of excess absorption levels in the metallic lines of the star during transit. Conclusions. The large atmospheric loss of GJ 436 b observed in Lyman-α transmission spectra is stable over the timescale of a few years, and the red wing signal supports the presence of a variable hydrogen absorption source besides the stable exosphere. The previously claimed in-transit absorption in the Si III line is likely an artifact resulting from the stellar magnetic cycle. The non-detection of metallic ions in absorption could indicate that the escape is not hydrodynamic or that the atmospheric mixing is not efficient in dragging metals high enough for sublimation to produce a detectable escape rate of ions to the exosphere. Context. We study temporal variations of the emission lines of Hα, Hɛ, H and K CaII, D1 and D2 NaI, He4026, and He5876 in the HARPS spectra of Proxima Centauri across an extended time of 13.2 yr, from May 27, 2004 to September 30, 2017. Aims. We analyse the common behaviour and differences in the intensities and profiles of different emission lines in flare and quiet modes of Proxima activity. Methods. We compare the pseudo-equivalent widths (pEW) and profiles of the emission lines in the HARPS high-resolution (R ~ 115 000) spectra observed at the same epochs. Results. All emission lines show variability with a timescale of at least 10 min. The strength of all lines except He4026 correlate with Hα. During strong flares the "red asymmetry" appears in the Hα emission line indicating the infall of hot condensed matter into the chromosphere with velocities greater than 100 km s−1 disturbing chromospheric layers. As a result, the strength of the CaII lines anti-correlates with Hα during strong flares. The HeI lines at 4026 and 5876 Å appear in the strong flares. The cores of D1 and D2 NaI lines are also seen in emission. During the minimum activity of Proxima Centauri, CaII lines and Hɛ almost disappear while the blue part of the NaI emission lines is affected by the absorption in the extending and condensing flows. Conclusions. We see different behaviour of emission lines formed in the flare regions and chromosphere. Chromosphere layers of Proxima Cen are likely heated by the flare events; these layers are cooled in the "non-flare" mode. The self-absorption structures in cores of our emission lines vary with time due to the presence of a complicated system of inward and outward matter flows in the absorbing layers. While most of the exoplanets have been found orbiting around solar-type stars, low-mass stars have recently been recognized as ideal exo-life laboratory. Currently, stellar activity is one of the limiting factors for the characterization of Earth-twins and for assessing their habitability: understanding the activity of M dwarfs is thus crucial. In this contribution I present the spectroscopic analysis of the quiet early-M dwarfs monitored within the HADES (HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey) radial velocity survey. The spectra allow us to analyze simultaneously the Ca ii H&K doublet and the Hydrogen Balmer series, while the intensive follow up gives us a large number of spectra (100) for each target. We complement this dataset with ground-based follow-up photometry and archival X-ray data. I present our results on the activity-rotation-stellar parameters and flux-flux relationships, and discuss the correlation of emission fluxes at low activity levels and the evolution timescales of active regions. We present high-precision light curves of several M- and K-type, active detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), recorded with 2-minute cadence by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Analysis of these curves, combined with new and literature radial velocity (RV) data, allows to vastly improve the accuracy and precision of stellar parameters with respect to previous studies of these systems. Chromospheric modeling of observed differences in stellar activity lines is imperative to fully understand the upper atmospheres of late-type stars. We present one-dimensional parametrized chromosphere models computed with the atmosphere code PHOENIX using an underlying photosphere of 3500 K. The aim of this work is to model chromospheric lines of a sample of 50 M2–3 dwarfs observed in the framework of the CARMENES, the Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs, exoplanet survey. The spectral comparison between observed data and models is performed in the chromospheric lines of Na I D2, Hα, and the bluest Ca II infrared triplet line to obtain best-fit models for each star in the sample. We find that for inactive stars a single model with a VAL C-like temperature structure is sufficient to describe simultaneously all three lines adequately. Active stars are rather modeled by a combination of an inactive and an active model, also giving the filling factors of inactive and active regions. Moreover, the fitting of linear combinations on variable stars yields relationships between filling factors and activity states, indicating that more active phases are coupled to a larger portion of active regions on the surface of the star. We use spectra from CARMENES, the Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs, to search for periods in chromospheric indices in 16 M0–M2 dwarfs. We measure spectral indices in the Hα, the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), and the Na I D lines to study which of these indices are best-suited to finding rotation periods in these stars. Moreover, we test a number of different period-search algorithms, namely the string length method, the phase dispersion minimisation, the generalized Lomb–Scargle periodogram, and the Gaussian process regression with quasi-periodic kernel. We find periods in four stars using Hα and in five stars using the Ca II IRT, two of which have not been found before. Our results show that both Hα and the Ca II IRT lines are well suited for period searches, with the Ca II IRT index performing slightly better than Hα. Unfortunately, the Na I D lines are strongly affected by telluric airglow, and we could not find any rotation period using this index. Further, different definitions of the line indices have no major impact on the results. Comparing the different search methods, the string length method and the phase dispersion minimisation perform worst, while Gaussian process models produce the smallest numbers of false positives and non-detections. This study reports the synchronization between the chromospheric and photometric variability at time-scale of about 1.6–1.8 yr as observed for the young, rapidly rotating solar analogue HD 30495. In addition, HD 30495 may be presenting evidence of surface differential rotation at time-scales of about 11 d and 21 d, as well as the sunspot-like decadal cycles at 11–12 yr or so. We apply a new gapped wavelet method of time–frequency analysis for studying the variability in a new composite of the chromospheric S -index (1967–2018) and the longest photometric Δ(b + y)/2 index (1993–2018). We discuss and interpret our results in relation to other observed mid-term periodicities roughly of the same time-scales that had been found recently from not only chromospheric and photospheric activity indices but also from coronal X-ray emissions as observed in a considerably large set of stellar samples including those young Sun analogues from the Kepler satellite project. Thus, there is an apparent universality of such mid-term activity modulation time-scales as this solar-stellar magnetic phenomenon is well observed directly for a host of solar activity related indices covering the photopsheric, chromospheric, coronal, and even the heliospheric (utilizing the measures of incoming galactic cosmic rays as a probe of activity variations) activity records. This is why we made a further attempt to interpret the results in search of a realistic generation mechanism as well as spatio-temporal persistency of the phenomenon under a wide scenario of dynamo simulations. M stars are ideal targets to search for Earth-like planets. However, they usually have high levels of magnetic activity, which could affect their habitability and make difficult the detection of exoplanets orbiting around them. Unfortunately, long-term variability of dM stars has not been extensively studied, due to their low intrinsic brightness. For this reason, in 1999 we started the HKα project, which systematically observes the spectra of a large number of stars, in particular dM stars, at the Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO). In this work, we study the long-term activity of the young active dM1 star AU Microscopii. We analyse the Mount Wilson index S derived from CASLEO spectra obtained between 2004 and 2016, which we complement with the S -index derived from HARPS, FEROS, and UVES public spectra. We also analyse the simultaneous photometric counterpart provided by the ASAS public data base for this star between 2000 and 2009, and our own photometry. In both totally independent time series, we detect a possible activity cycle of period ∼5 yr. We also derived a precise rotation period for this star P rot = 4.85 d, consistent with the literature. This activity cycle reflects that an αΩ dynamo could be operating in this star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have examined ultraviolet (UV) and optical UB spectra of 20 UV-emitting Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars of various variability classes to study the intensity of the continuum and emission lines as a function of stellar visual magnitude to shed light on the origin of their UV emission. A significant fraction (60 per cent) of these stars show Fe  i and Fe  ii emission lines and ∼1/4 show Balmer lines in emission. The emission in the GALEX [FUV] and [NUV] bands is dominated by continuum emission, with a limited (≤36 per cent) contribution from emission lines. The UV spectra of sources with multiple GALEX or IUE observations reveal short-term (of a few days or less) variability, which does not follow the pulsation cycle. The intensity of the Mg  ii λ2800 doublet, a classical diagnostic of chromospheric activity, is anticorrelated with the spectral slope in the near-UV that could be partially attributed to temperature variations in a stellar chromosphere. We observed that the intensity of Mg  ii λ2800 in o Cet has a sharp maximum at the phase ϕ ≃ 0.35 after the light curve maximum. Other LPV stars (T Cet and R Com) show strong UV Fe  ii emission lines near this same phase and, like the Mg  ii doublet, their excitation can be driven by pulsation. Our results suggest that far-UV emission from AGB stars might be external (hot companion, accretion disc), but contemporary photometric and spectral UV observations covering the whole pulsation period are required to ascertain its true origin. Context. Spectroscopically determined lithium abundances of metal-poor turn-off dwarfs are known to be nearly constant (Spite plateau), but manifestly lower than the primordial value expected from the standard cosmological model. However, abundance determination by using conventional model atmospheres may not necessarily be correct since the existence of high-temperature chromosphere even in very old stars has been confirmed. Aims. The aim of this study is to examine how the extra UV flux possibly irradiated from the chromosphere could affect the formation of the Li I 6708 line, and whether or not its influence might lead to a solution of the Li abundance discrepancy. Methods. A simple model chromosphere of a uniform thin gray slab emitting only thermal radiation is assumed, characterized by optical thickness and temperature. By taking into account this incident radiation in the surface boundary condition, non-local thermodynamical equilibrium calculations for neutral Li atoms are carried out in order to see how the equivalent widths and the resulting abundances are affected by these parameters. Results. If the parameters are appropriately chosen, the strength of the Li I 6708 line can be reduced by a factor of ~2–3 due to overionization caused by enhanced UV radiation, leading to an apparent lowering of the abundance by ~0.3–0.5 dex, which is consistent with the discrepancy in question. Moreover, the observed slight metallicity-dependent trend of the plateau can also be reproduced as a result of the change in atmospheric transparency. Conclusions. Superficial underestimation of Li abundances due to considerable overionization caused by chromospheric radiation may be regarded as a ponderable interpretation for the cosmological Li problem. The touchstone to verify this model would be to check the existence of significantly enhanced UV radiation in these Spite plateau stars, which should be detected if this scenario is valid, although very few such UV spectrophotometric observations have been done to date. We present the results of time-resolved high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the very active RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) star SZ Piscium (SZ Psc), obtained during two consecutive observing nights on 2011 October 24 and 25. Several optical chromospheric activity indicators are analysed using the spectral subtraction technique, which show the remarkably different behaviour between two nights. Gradually blue-shifted and strengthened excess absorption features presented in the series of the subtracted spectra (especially for the Hα, |$\rm{He\,{\small I}}$| D3, and Hβ lines), as a result of active stellar prominence that is rising its height along the line of our sight, was detected in the observations on October 24. This prominence activation event was probably associated with the subsequently occurred optical flare, and part of that flare decay phase was hunted in the observations on October 25. The flare was characterized by the prominent |$\rm{He\,{\small I}}$| D3 line emission, as well as stronger chromospheric emission in the Hα, Hβ, and other active lines. The gradual decay of flare was accompanied by an obviously developmental absorption feature in the blue wing of the Hα and other active lines, which could be explained as cool post-flare loops which projected against the bright flare background. Therefore, a series of possibly associated magnetic activity phenomena, including flare-related prominence activation, optical flare, and post-flare loops, were detected during our observations. Previous studies have revealed a 120 day activity cycle in the F-type star τ Boo, which represents the shortest activity cycle discovered until now. The question arises as to whether or not short-term activity cycles are a common phenomenon in F-type stars. To address this question, we analyse S-index time series of F-type stars taken with the TIGRE telescope to search for periodic variations with a maximal length of 2 years using the generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram method. In our sample, we find four F-type stars showing periodic variations shorter than one year. However, the amplitude of these variations in our sample of F-star type stars appears to be smaller than that of solar-type stars with well-developed cyclic activity, and apparently represents only a part of the total activity. We conclude that among F-stars, the time-behaviour of activity differs from that of the Sun and cooler main sequence stars, as short-term cyclic variations with shallow amplitude of the cycle seem to prevail, rather than cycles with 10+ years periods and a larger cycle amplitude. At radio wavelengths, solar-type stars emit thermal free–free and gyroresonance, gyrosynchrotron, and impulsive coherent emission. Thermal free–free emission originates at layers where the optical depth is close to unit, while high brightness temperature and variable emission can be due to flares via gyrosynchrotron emission. We observed the |$\alpha \,$| Cen  system with the Australian Telescope Compact Array at 2 GHz for three days and 17 GHz for one day. Both stars have been detected at 17 GHz, while only an upper limit has been obtained at low frequency despite the longer integration time. The brightness temperatures are consistent with the temperature of the upper chromosphere of the Sun. Inverting the formulae of the free–free emission, the average electron density of the plasma has been inferred. The same procedure was applied to the data in the millimetre recently acquired with ALMA. A comparison with the atmospheric solar models reveals a higher level of activity in |$\alpha \,$| Cen B rather than in |$\alpha \,$| Cen A, even if still at quiescent level. The non-detection at 2 GHz allows us to put a lower limit in the filling factor of active regions. The claimed detection of an Earth-sized planet in close orbit to |$\alpha \,$| Cen B, although doubtful, opens the opportunity to check the existence of Star–Planet Magnetic Interaction. We present an empirical study of the strength of magnetic stellar activity among cool giant stars on the red and asymptotic giant branches using the Ca ii H&K chromospheric emission strength measured in the context of the Mount Wilson project. Because we consider only stars with a parallax error smaller than 10 per cent, the stars can be accurately placed into an empirical Hertzsprung–Russell diagram and their evolutionary status can be reliably assessed from a comparison with calibrated evolutionary tracks. We find that S -index values among evolved giants redder than 1.5 in B − V and with luminosity classes I and II are larger than those found among the progenitor K giants with luminosity class III and B − V < 1.3. Converting the measured S -indices into physical chromospheric surface fluxes, we find that chromospheric heating undergoes a remarkable reversal and revival as giant luminosity increases. UV radiation plays a critical role in the chemistry of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around evolved stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). However, the effects of all potential sources of UV radiation have not been included in models. We present preliminary results of adding an internal source of UV to the CSE chemistry and predict large enhancements of atomic and ionic species arising from photo-destruction of parent species. Observations of atomic carbon towards the UV-bright AGB star o Cet are consistent with the modelling. In addition, we calculate the precise depth dependence of the CO photodissociation rate in an expanding CSE. We incorporate this within a chemical network active in the outflows of AGB stars, which includes 933 species and 15182 reactions. Our results show that the CO envelope size is about 30% smaller at half abundance than the most commonly used radius reported by Mamon et al. (1988). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stellar activity is ubiquitously encountered in M dwarfs and often characterised by the Hα line. In the most active M dwarfs, Hα is found in emission, sometimes with a complex line profile. Previous studies have reported extended wings and asymmetries in the Hα line during flares. We used a total of 473 high-resolution spectra of 28 active M dwarfs obtained by the CARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-Earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) spectrograph to study the occurrence of broadened and asymmetric Hα line profiles and their association with flares, and examine possible physical explanations. We detected a total of 41 flares and 67 broad, potentially asymmetric, wings in Hα. The broadened Hα lines display a variety of profiles with symmetric cases and both red and blue asymmetries. Although some of these line profiles are found during flares, the majority are at least not obviously associated with flaring. We propose a mechanism similar to coronal rain or chromospheric downward condensations as a cause for the observed red asymmetries; the symmetric cases may also be caused by Stark broadening. We suggest that blue asymmetries are associated with rising material, and our results are consistent with a prevalence of blue asymmetries during the flare onset. Besides the Hα asymmetries, we find some cases of additional line asymmetries in He I D3, Na I D lines, and the He I line at 10 830 Å taken all simultaneously thanks to the large wavelength coverage of CARMENES. Our study shows that asymmetric Hα lines are a rather common phenomenon in M dwarfs and need to be studied in more detail to obtain a better understanding of the atmospheric dynamics in these objects. We perform, for the first time, a detailed long-term activity study of the binary system ζ Ret. We use all available HARPS spectra obtained between the years 2003 and 2016. We build a time series of the Mount Wilson S index for both stars, then we analyse these series by using Lomb-Scargle periodograms. The components ζ¹ Ret and ζ² Ret that belong to this binary system are physically very similar to each other and also similar to our Sun, which makes it a remarkable system. We detect in the solar-analogue star ζ² Ret a long-term activity cycle with a period of ~10 yr, similar to the solar one (~11 yr). It is worthwhile to mention that this object satisfies previous criteria for a flat star and for a cycling star simultaneously. Another interesting feature of this binary system is a high ~0.220 dex difference between the average log(R'HK) activity levels of both stars. Our study clearly shows that ζ¹ Ret is significantly more active than ζ² Ret. In addition, ζ¹ Ret shows an erratic variability in its stellar activity. In this work, we explore different scenarios trying to explain this rare behaviour in a pair of coeval stars, which could help to explain the difference in this and other binary systems. From these results, we also warn that for the development of activity-age calibrations (which commonly use binary systems and/or stellar clusters as calibrators) the whole history of activity available for the stars involved should be taken into account. We use the LAMOST spectra of member stars in Pleiades, M34, Praesepe, and Hyades to study how chromospheric activity varies as a function of mass and rotation at different age. We measured excess equivalent widths of Há, Hâ, and Ca II K based on estimated chromospheric contributions from old and inactive field dwarfs, and excess luminosities are obtained by normalizing bolometric luminosity, for more than 700 late-type stars in these open clusters. Results indicate two activity sequences in cool spot coverage and Há excess emission among GK dwarfs in Pleiades andMdwarfs in Praesepe and Hyades, paralleling with well-known rotation sequences. A weak dependence of chromospheric emission on rotation exists among ultrafast rotators in saturated regime with Rossby number Ro ≲ 0.1. In the unsaturated regime, chromospheric and coronal emission show similar dependence on Ro, but with a shift towards larger Ro, indicating chromospheric emission gets easily saturated than coronal emission, and/or convective turnover time-scales based on X-ray data do not work well with chromospheric emission. More interestingly, our analysis shows fully convective slow rotators obey the rotation-chromospheric activity relation similar to hotter stars, confirming the previous finding. We found correlations among Há, Hâ, and Ca II K emissions, in which Há losses are more important than Ca II K for cooler and more active stars. In addition, a weak correlation is seen between chromospheric emission and photospheric activity that shows dependence on stellar spectral type and activity level, which provides some clues on how spot configuration varies as a function of mass and activity level. The LAMOST spectral survey provides a rich databases for studying stellar spectroscopic properties and chromospheric activity. We cross-matched a total of 105,287 periodic variable stars from several photometric surveys and databases (CSS, LINEAR, Kepler, a recently updated eclipsing star catalogue, ASAS, NSVS, some part of SuperWASP survey, variable stars from the Tsinghua University-NAOC Transient Survey, and other objects from some new references) with four million stellar spectra published in the LAMOST data release 2 (DR2). We found 15,955 spectra for 11,469 stars (including 5398 eclipsing binaries). We calculated their equivalent widths ( EWs ) of their H α , H β , H γ , H δ and Ca ii H lines. Using the H α line EW, we found 447 spectra with emission above continuum for a total of 316 stars (178 eclipsing binaries). We identified 86 active stars (including 44 eclipsing binaries) with repeated LAMOST spectra. A total of 68 stars (including 34 eclipsing binaries) show chromospheric activity variability. We also found LAMOST spectra of 12 cataclysmic variables, five of which show chromospheric activity variability. We also made photometric follow-up studies of three short period targets (DY CVn, HAT-192-0001481, and LAMOST J164933.24+141255.0) using the Xinglong 60-cm telescope and the SARA 90-cm and 1-m telescopes, and obtained new BVRI CCD light curves. We analyzed these light curves and obtained orbital and starspot parameters. We detected the first flare event with a huge brightness increase of more than about 1.5 magnitudes in R filter in LAMOST J164933.24+141255.0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Star formation in the solar neighborhood is mainly traced by young stars in open clusters, associations, and in the field, which can be identified, for example, by their X-ray emission. The determination of stellar parameters for the optical counterparts of X-ray sources is crucial for a full characterization of these stars. Aims. This work extends the spectroscopic study of the RasTyc sample, obtained by the cross-correlation of the Tycho and ROSAT AllSky Survey catalogs, to stars fainter than V = 9.5 mag and aims to identify sparse populations of young stars in the solar neighborhood. Methods. We acquired 625 high-resolution spectra for 443 presumably young stars with four different instruments in the northern hemisphere. The radial and rotational velocity (vsin i) of our targets were measured by means of the cross-correlation technique, which is also helpful to discover single-lined (SB1), double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2), and multiple systems. We used the code ROTFIT to perform an MK spectral classification and to determine the atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and vsin i of the single stars and SB1 systems. For these objects, we used the spectral subtraction of slowly rotating templates to measure the equivalent widths of the Hα and Li I 6708 Å lines, which enabled us to derive their chromospheric activity level and lithium abundance. We made use of Gaia DR1 parallaxes and proper motions to locate the targets in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram and to compute the space velocity components of the youngest objects. Results. We find a remarkable percentage (at least 35%) of binaries and multiple systems. On the basis of the lithium abundance, the sample of single stars and SB1 systems appears to be mostly (∼60%) composed of stars younger than the members of the UMa cluster. The remaining sources are in the age range between the UMa and Hyades clusters (∼20%) or older (∼20%). In total, we identify 42 very young (PMS-like) stars, which lie above or very close to the Pleiades upper envelope of the lithium abundance. A significant percentage (∼12%) of evolved stars (giants and subgiants) is also present in our sample. Some of these stars (∼36%) are also lithium rich (A(Li) > 1.4). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. HD 189733 is an exoplanetary system consisting of a transiting hot Jupiter and an active K2V-type main sequence star. Rich manifestations of a stellar activity, like photometric spots or chromospheric flares were repeatedly observed in this system in optical, UV and X-rays. Aims. We aim to use VLT/UVES high resolution (R = 60 000) echelle spectra to study a stellar flare. Methods. We have performed simultaneous analyses of the temporal evolution in several chromospheric stellar lines, namely, the Ca ii H & K lines (3933, 3968 Å), H α (6563 Å), H β (4861 Å), H γ (4341 Å), H δ (4102 Å), H ϵ (3970 Å), the Ca ii infrared triplet lines (8498, 8542 and 8662 Å), and He i D3 (5875.6 Å). Observations were carried out with a time resolution of approximately 1 min for a duration of four hours, including a complete planetary transit. Results. We determine the energy released during the flare in all studied chromospheric lines combined to be about 8.7 × 1031 erg, which puts this event at the upper end of flare energies observed on the Sun. Our analysis does not reveal any significant delay of the flare peak observed in the Balmer and Ca ii H & K lines, although we find a clear difference in the temporal evolution of these lines. The He i D3 shows additional absorption possibly related to the flare event. Based on the flux released in Ca ii H & K lines during the flare, we estimate the soft X-ray flux emission to be 7 × 1030 erg. Conclusions. The observed flare can be ranked as a moderate flare on a K-type star and confirms a rather high activity level of HD 189733 host star. The cores of the studied chromospheric lines demonstrate the same behavior and let us study the flare evolution. We demonstrate that the activity of an exoplanet host star can play an important role in the detection of exoplanet atmospheres, since these are frequently discovered as an additional absorption in the line cores. Aims. Previous studies have shown that, for late-type stars, activity indicators derived from the Ca II infrared-triplet (IRT) lines are correlated with the indicators derived from the Ca II H&K lines. Therefore, the Ca II IRT lines are in principle usable for activity studies, but they may be less sensitive when measuring the rotation period. Our goal is to determine whether the Ca II IRT lines are sufficiently sensitive to measure rotation periods and how any Ca II IRT derived rotation periods compare with periods derived from the "classical" Mount Wilson S-index. Methods. To analyse the Ca II IRT lines' sensitivity and to measure rotation periods, we define an activity index for each of the Ca II IRT lines similar to the Mount Wilson S-index and perform a period analysis for the lines separately and jointly. Results. For eleven late-type stars we can measure the rotation periods using the Ca II IRT indices similar to those found in the Mount Wilson S-index time series and find that a period derived from all four indices gives the most probable rotation period; we find good agreement for stars with already existing literature values. In a few cases the computed periodograms show a complicated structure with multiple peaks, meaning that formally different periods are derived in different indices. We show that in one case, this is due to data sampling effects and argue that denser cadence sampling is necessary to provide credible evidence for differential rotation. Aims. Although observational data unequivocally point to the presence of chromospheres in red giant stars, no attempts have been made so far to model them using 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres. We therefore compute an exploratory 3D hydrodynamical model atmosphere for a cool red giant in order to study the dynamical and thermodynamic properties of its chromosphere, as well as the influence of the chromosphere on its observable properties. Methods. Three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations are carried out with the CO5BOLD model atmosphere code for a star with the atmospheric parameters (Teff ≈ 4010 K, log g = 1:5, [M=H] = 0:0), which are similar to those of the K-type giant star Aldebaran (α Tau). The computational domain extends from the upper convection zone into the chromosphere (7:4 ⩾ log τRoss ⩾ -12:8) and covers several granules in each horizontal direction. Using this model atmosphere, we compute the emergent continuum intensity maps at diαerent wavelengths, spectral line profiles of Ca ii K, the Ca ii infrared triplet line at 854.2 nm, and Hα, as well as the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the emergent radiative flux. Results. The initial model quickly develops a dynamical chromosphere that is characterised by propagating and interacting shock waves. The peak temperatures in the chromospheric shock fronts reach values of up to 5000 K, although the shock fronts remain quite narrow. Similar to the Sun, the gas temperature distribution in the upper layers of red giant stars is composed of a cool component due to adiabatic cooling in the expanding post-shock regions and a hot component due to shock waves. For this red giant model, the hot component is a rather flat high-temperature tail, which nevertheless aαects the resulting average temperatures significantly. Conclusions. The simulations show that the atmospheres of red giant stars are dynamic and intermittent. Consequently, many observable properties cannot be reproduced with static 1D models, but require advanced 3D hydrodynamical modelling. We report the discovery of a super-Earth orbiting at the inner edge of the habitable zone of the star GJ 625 based on the analysis of the radial-velocity (RV) time series from the HARPS-N spectrograph, consisting of 151 HARPS-N measurements taken over 3.5 yr. GJ 625 b is a planet with a minimum mass Msin i of 2.82 ± 0.51 M⊕ with an orbital period of 14.628 ± 0.013 days at a distance of 0.078 AU from its parent star. The host star is the quiet M2 V star GJ 625, located at 6.5 pc from the Sun. We find the presence of a second radial-velocity signal in the range 74-85 days that we relate to stellar rotation after analysing the time series of Ca II H&K and Hα spectroscopic indicators, the variations of the FWHM of the CCF, and the APT2 photometric light curves. Context. Studies of the formation and evolution of young stars and their disks rely on knowledge of the stellar parameters of the young stars. The derivation of these parameters is commonly based on comparison with photospheric template spectra. Furthermore, chromospheric emission in young active stars impacts the measurement of mass accretion rates, a key quantity for studying disk evolution. Aims. Here we derive stellar properties of low-mass (M⋆≲ 2 M⊙) pre-main sequence stars without disks, which represent ideal photospheric templates for studies of young stars. We also use these spectra to constrain the impact of chromospheric emission on the measurements of mass accretion rates. The spectra are reduced, flux-calibrated, and corrected for telluric absorption, and are made available to the community. Methods. We derive the spectral type for our targets by analyzing the photospheric molecular features present in their VLT/X-shooter spectra by means of spectral indices and comparison of the relative strength of photospheric absorption features. We also measure effective temperature, gravity, projected rotational velocity, and radial velocity from our spectra by fitting them with synthetic spectra with the ROTFIT tool. The targets have negligible extinction (AV< 0.5 mag) and spectral type from G5 to K6, and from M6.5 to M8. They thus complement the library of photospheric templates presented in our previous publication. We perform synthetic photometry on the spectra to derive the typical colors of young stars in different filters. We measure the luminosity of the emission lines present in the spectra and estimate the noise due to chromospheric emission in the measurements of accretion luminosity in accreting stars. Results. We provide a calibration of the photospheric colors of young pre-main sequence stars as a function of their spectral type in a set of standard broad-band optical and near-infrared filters. The logarithm of the noise on the accretion luminosity normalized to the stellar luminosity is roughly constant and equal to ~−2.3 for targets with masses larger than 1 solar mass, and decreases with decreasing temperatures for lower-mass stars. For stars with masses of ~ 1.5 M⊙ and ages of ~ 1−5 Myr, the chromospheric noise converts to a limit of measurable mass accretion rates of ~ 3 × 10-10M⊙/yr. The limit on the mass accretion rate set by the chromospheric noise is of the order of the lowest measured values of mass accretion rates in Class II objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. A large number of Calcium infrared triplet (IRT) spectra are expected from the Gaia and CARMENES missions. Conversion of these spectra into known activity indicators will allow analysis of their temporal evolution to a better degree. We set out to find such a conversion formula and to determine its robustness. Methods. We have compared 2274 Ca II IRT spectra of active main-sequence F to K stars taken by the TIGRE telescope with those of inactive stars of the same spectral type. After normalizing and applying rotational broadening, we subtracted the comparison spectra to find the chromospheric excess flux caused by activity. We obtained the total excess flux, and compared it to established activity indices derived from the Ca II H and K lines, the spectra of which were obtained simultaneously to the infrared spectra. Results. The excess flux in the Ca II IRT is found to correlate well with R' HK and R+ HK, as well as SMWO, if the B -- V-dependency is taken into account. We find an empirical conversion formula to calculate the corresponding value of one activity indicator from the measurement of another, by comparing groups of datapoints of stars with similar B -- V. We present the solar S-index record of cycle 24, obtained by the Telescopio Internacional de Guanajuato, Robotico Espectroscopico robotic telescope facility and its high-resolution spectrograph HEROS (R ≈ 20 000), which measures the solar chromospheric Ca II H&K line emission by using moonlight. Our calibration process uses the same set of standard stars as introduced by theMountWilson team, thus giving us a direct comparison with their huge body of observations taken between 1966 and 1992, as well as with other cool stars. Carrington cycle 24 activity started from the unusually deep and long minimum 2008/2009, with an S-index average of only 0.154, 0.015 deeper than the one of 1986 (〈S〉 = 0.169). In this respect, the chromospheric radiative losses differ remarkably from the variation of the coronal radio flux F10.7 cm and the sunspot numbers. In addition, the cycle 24 S-amplitude remained small, 0.022 (cycles 21 and 22 averaged: 0.024), and so resulted in a very low 2014 maximum of 〈S〉 = 0.176 (cycles 21 and 22 averaged: 0.193). We argue that this find is significant, since the Ca II H&K line emission is a good proxy for the solar far-ultraviolet (far-UV) flux, which plays an important role in the heating of the Earth's stratosphere, and we further argue that the solar far-UV flux changes with solar activity much more strongly than the total solar output. Context. The Mg i 4571 Å line and the b triplet are denoted in the literature as diagnostics of solar and stellar activity since their formation is in the low chromosphere. Aims. We aim to investigate the potential of these four spectral lines as diagnostics of chromospheric activity in solar-like stars, studying the dependence of the intensity of these lines from local atmospheric changes by varying atmospheric models and stellar parameters. Methods. Starting with Next-Gen photospheric models, we build a grid of atmospheric models including photosphere, chromosphere and transition region and solve the radiative transfer to obtain synthetic profiles to compare with observed spectra of main-sequence, solar like stars with effective temperatures in the range 4800–6400 K, solar gravity and solar metallicity. Results. We find that the Mg i 4571 Å line is significantly sensitive to local changes in the atmospheric model around the minimum temperature. Conversely, the lines of the b triplet do not show significant responses to changes on the local atmospheric structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the activity-induced signals related to rotation and magnetic cycles in late-type stars (FGKM) and analyse the Ca II H&K, the Hα and the radial velocity time series of 55 stars using the spectra from the HARPS public data base and the light curves provided by the All Sky Automated Survey. We search for short-term and long-term periodic signals in the time series of activity indicators as well as in the photometric light curves. Radial velocity data sets are then analysed to determine the presence of activity-induced signals. We measure a radial velocity signal induced by rotational modulation of stellar surface features in 37 stars, from late-F-type to mid-M-type stars.We report an empirical relationship, with some degree of spectral type dependency, between the mean level of chromospheric emission measured by the log10(R′ HK) and the measured radial velocity semi-amplitude. We also report a relationship between the semi-amplitude of the chromospheric measured signal and the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity-induced signal, which strongly depends on the spectral type. We find that for a given strength of chromospheric activity (i.e. a given rotation period), M-type stars tend to induce larger rotation-related radial velocity signals than G- and K-type stars. In this work, we use the semi-empirical atmospheric modelling method to obtain the chromospheric temperature, pressure, density and magnetic field distribution versus height in the K2 primary component of the RS CVn binary system HR 7428. While temperature, pressure and density are the standard output of the semi-empirical modelling technique, the chromospheric magnetic field estimation versus height comes from considering the possibility of not imposing hydrostatic equilibrium in the semi-empirical computation. The stability of the best non-hydrostatic equilibrium model implies the presence of an additive (towards the centre of the star) pressure that decreases in strength from the base of the chromosphere towards the outer layers. Interpreting the additive pressure as magnetic pressure, we estimated a magnetic field intensity of about 500 G at the base of the chromosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have conducted a photometric survey of the globular cluster NGC 6397 in a search for variable stars. We obtained ~11 h of time-resolved photometric images with one European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope using the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph imager distributed over two consecutive nights. We analysed 8391 light curves of stars brighter than magnitude 23 with the 465-nm filter, and we identified 412 variable stars, reaching ~4.8 ± 0.2 per cent of variability with time-scales between 0.004 and 2 d, with amplitudes variation greater than ±0.2 mag. Detailed knowledge of stellar activity is crucial for understanding stellar dynamos, as well as pushing exoplanet radial-velocity detection limits towards Earth analogue confirmation. We directly compare archival High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher spectra taken at the minimum in α Cen B's activity cycle to a high-activity state when clear rotational modulation of logR' HK is visible. Relative to the inactive spectra, we find a large number of narrow pseudo-emission features in the active spectra with strengths that are rotationally modulated. These features most likely originate from plage, spots or a combination of both. They also display radial velocity variations of ~300 m s-1 - consistent with an active region rotating across the stellar surface. Furthermore, we see evidence that some of the lines originating from the 'active immaculate' photosphere appear broader relative to the 'inactive immaculate' case. This may be due to enhanced contributions of, for example, magnetic bright points to these lines, which then causes additional line broadening. Aims. A homogeneous determination of basic stellar parameters of young stellar object (YSO) candidates is needed to confirm their pre-main sequence evolutionary stage and membership to star forming regions (SFRs), and to get reliable values of the quantities related to chromospheric activity and accretion. Methods. We used the code ROTFIT and synthetic BT-Settl spectra for the determination of the atmospheric parameters (Teff and log g), veiling (r), radial (RV), and projected rotational velocity (v sin i) from X-shooter spectra of 102 YSO candidates (95 of infrared Class II and seven Class III) in the Lupus SFR. The spectral subtraction of inactive templates, rotationally broadened to match the v sin i of the targets, enabled us to measure the line fluxes for several diagnostics of both chromospheric activity and accretion, such as Hα, Hβ, Ca II, and Na I lines. Results. We have shown that 13 candidates can be rejected as Lupus members based on their discrepant RV with respect to Lupus and/or the very low log g values. At least 11 of them are background giants, two of which turned out to be lithium-rich giants. Regarding the members, we found that all Class III sources have Hα fluxes that are compatible with a pure chromospheric activity, while objects with disks lie mostly above the boundary between chromospheres and accretion. Young stellar objects with transitional disks display both high and low Hα fluxes. We found that the line fluxes per unit surface are tightly correlated with the accretion luminosity (Lacc) derived from the Balmer continuum excess. This rules out that the relationships between Lacc and line luminosities found in previous works are simply due to calibration effects. We also found that the Ca II-IRT flux ratio, FCaII8542/FCaII8498, is always small, indicating an optically thick emission source. The latter can be identified with the accretion shock near the stellar photosphere. The Balmer decrement reaches instead, for several accretors, high values typical of optically thin emission, suggesting that the Balmer emission originates in different parts of the accretion funnels with a smaller optical depth.
