Background: Higher levels of physical activity (PA) after treatment are associated with beneficial effects on physical and psychosocial functioning of cancer survivors. However, survivors often do not meet the recommended levels of PA. In order to promote PA, we developed a closed internet-based program. The aim of the study is to evaluate the (cost-)effectiveness of an internet-based PA-promotion program, alone or combined with physiotherapy counselling, compared to usual care, on PA-levels of breast or prostate cancer survivors. In this multicenter randomised controlled trial (RCT), breast or prostate cancer survivors who completed their primary treatment 3-12 months earlier, will be randomised to either 6-months access to a fully-automated internet-based intervention alone, an internet-based intervention plus remote support by a physiotherapist, or a control group. The intervention is based on the Transtheoretical Model and includes personalized feedback, information, video's and assignments. Additionally, in a second arm, physiotherapy counselling is provided through monthly scheduled and on-demand telephone calls. The control group will receive usual care and a leaflet with PA guidelines. Methods: At baseline, 6 and 12 months, the primary outcome (PA) will be measured during 7 consecutive days by accelerometers. Secondary outcomes are self-reported PA, fatigue, mood, health-related quality of life, and costs. The group differences for primary and secondary outcomes will be analyzed using linear mixed models. Discussion: If proven to be (cost)effective, this internet-based intervention, either alone or in combination with telephone support, will be a welcome addition to previous RCT's. This study explores possible routes to improve the adaptive management of firms and proposes to view firms as social-ecological systems. We conceptualise three possible ways in which firms can frame their relation with the natural environment. The first is impact related: strategies for assessing and reducing the negative impact of business on the wider natural system. The second is dependency related: strategies in terms of dependency of the firms on the wider natural environment. The third is mutual dependency related: strategies that explicitly view firms as social-ecological systems, due to a mutual dependence between business and natural environment.Through a qualitative approach by means of ten case studies we analyse the current ways managers of firms frame their companies’ vis-à-vis the natural environment. The last strategy is still in an early stage within theory as well as practice as shown among the firms. Therefore we formulate five principles that managers could use to stimulate the last frame: businesses as social-ecological systems.

Zeewier is een potentieel belangrijke voedselbron en grote duurzame koolstofbron voor de biobased economy. Met de groeiende wereldbevolking is het noodzakelijk om voor ons voedsel meer te kijken naar de zee als ‘landbouwgebied’. Boeren op zee is een grote uitdaging. Het vereist grote investeringen in infrastructuur. Voordat ondernemers hierin kunnen investeren moeten realistische vooruitzichten zijn op kweekmogelijkheden en winstgevende eindproducten. Dit project had tot doel de verschillende schakels in de keten van zeewierproductie tot vermarkting tegen het licht te houden. Duurzaamheid van de productie is hierbij leidend geweest.

There is growing focus on multi-functional use of the marine environment. The solution presented is to combinedifferent economic activities in ‘multi-use platforms at sea’ (MUPS). An expanding body of literature focusses onthe economic, technical or social challenges that follow from combining these different functions at sea. CurrentDutch policy sees MUPS as a promising way to make the most out of scarce space available but present rules andregulations not supportive of MUPS.To find the right mode of governance for developing MUPS one needs a discourse coalition with a shareddefinition of (1) the problem tackled, (2) the solution it brings, (3) the solutions envisioned (including design anduser functions) and (4) the role of various actors in bringing about these solutions. In this article we present adiscourse analysis of the North Sea on the governance of MUPS.It shows that there is no single shared discourse but that there are contesting views on what MUPS are orshould be. Although some convergence of discourse takes place, the question whose problem is solved by MUPSremains unanswered: do they solve public problems such as nature conservation and spatial planning or areMUPS the solution to high Operation and Maintenance costs? This hampers the development of multi-useplatforms at sea with neither public nor private actors willing to take the lead.

In this paper a Methodology for Integrated Socio-Economic Assessment (MISEA) of the viability and sustainability of different designs of Multi-Use Offshore Platforms (MUOPs) is presented. MUOPs are designed for multi-use of ocean space for energy extraction (wind power production and wave energy), aquaculture and transport maritime services. The developed methodology allows identification, valuation and assessment of: the potential range of impacts of a number of feasible designs of MUOP investments, and the likely responses of those impacted by the investment project. This methodology provides decision-makers with a valuable decision tool to assess whether a MUOP project increases the overall social welfare and hence should be undertaken, under alternative specifications regarding its design, the discount rate and the stream of net benefits, if a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) is to be followed or sensitivity analysis of selected criteria in a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework. Such a methodology is also crucial for facilitating of the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD adopted in June 2008) that aims to achieve good environmental status of the EU's marine waters by 2020 and to protect the resource base upon which marine-related economic and social activities depend. According to the MSFD each member state must draw up a program of cost-effective measures, while prior to any new measure an impact assessment which contains a detailed cost-benefit analysis of the proposed measures is required.

Ondernemers in de melkveehouderij investeren in toenemende mate in de bodem vanuit de kringloopaanpak. De zuivelcoöperatie CONO Kaasmakers stimuleert deze aanpak via haar programma Caring Dairy. In december 2010 heeft CONO het KringloopKompas gelanceerd, waarbij de bedrijfsvoering van leden van CONO gescoord worden op aspecten van duurzaamheid. Het beoordelen van de kwaliteit van de bodem, bijvoorbeeld via een Visual Soil Assessment score, vormt een onderdeel daarvan.

In opdracht van het ministerie van EZ is een enquête uitgevoerd onder Nederlandse gemeenten om inzicht te krijgen in hoeveel gemeenten anno 2012 betrokken zijn bij regionale voedselinitiatieven en hoeveel gemeenten een actief voedselbeleid hebben ontwikkeld of dat van plan zijn te gaan doen. Uit de enquête blijkt dat 72% van de gemeenten initiatieven van Duurzaam Regionaal Voedsel ondersteunt, 10% van de gemeenten heeft een beleid of visie voor Duurzaam Regionaal Voedsel. Van de gemeenten die nog geen beleid hebben, zegt 26% dit in de toekomst te willen gaan doen. Kennisvragen die bij gemeenten spelen hebben vooral betrekking op de behoefte aan praktijkvoorbeelden over hoe gemeenten en private partijen gezamenlijk initiatieven van Duurzaam Regionaal Voedsel kunnen ontwikkelen en implementeren.

Het ontwikkelen van regionale voedselketens staat binnen de gemeenten, Nederland en Europa in de belangstelling. Voor een regio is het daarom belangrijk inzicht te hebben in het belang van de voedselketen binnen hun eigen regio, zodat daar actief beleid op kan worden gevoerd en dat overheden, ondernemers en onderwijsinstellingen acties kunnen ondernemen om de voedselketen te stimuleren en daarmee de economische activiteiten in de regio te behouden en/of te versterken. Deze studie analyseert de huidige en toekomstige waarde van voedselketens voor de Achterhoek. Hieruit blijkt dat de waarde van voedselketens hoog is, maar tegelijkertijd maakt het onderzoek duidelijk dat de waarde onder druk staat wat naast economische gevolgen, ook sociale en landschappelijke gevolgen met zich meebrengt. Dit rapport biedt ontwikkel strategieën om de waarde te behouden dan wel te versterken. Afgesloten wordt met conclusies en aanbevelingen voor ondernemers, overheden en onderwijsinstellingen om de waarde van voedselketens te versterken.

Graduated compression stockings have been advocated for prevention of lymphedema after inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) although scientific evidence of their efficacy in preventing lymphedema is lacking. The primary objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of class II compression stockings for the prevention of lymphedema in cancer patients following ILND. Secondary objectives were to investigate the influence of stockings on the occurrence of wound complications and genital edema, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and body image. Eighty patients (45 with melanoma, 35 with urogenital tumors) who underwent ILND at two specialized cancer centers were randomly allocated to class II compression stocking use for six months or to a usual care control group. Lymphedema of the leg and genital area, wound complications, HRQoL, and body image were assessed at regular intervals prior to and up to 12 months after ILND. No significant differences were observed between groups in the incidence of edema, median time to the occurrence of edema, incidence of genital edema, frequency of complications, HRQoL, or body image. Based on the results of the current study, routine prescription of class II graduated compression stockings after ILND should be questioned and alternative prevention strategies should be considered

Dit rapport verkent de relaties tussen ondernemen en natuur theoretisch en empirisch. Drie koplopers op het gebied van duurzaam ondernemen schuiven langzaam op van impactreductie, waarbij de natuurlijke omgeving zoveel mogelijk wordt ontzien, naar strategieën gericht op wederkerigheid. Bij wederkerigheid benutten ondernemers natuurlijke hulpbronnen niet alleen in hun bedrijfsvoering, maar investeren zij ook in het op peil houden of ontwikkelen van natuur. Obstakels die zij hierbij tegenkomen zijn: een gebrekkige beheersbaarheid van natuurlijke processen, een nadelige kosten-baten verhouding bij investeren in natuur, nadelige concurrentieverhoudingen, een gebrek aan kennis over de werking en bijdrage van wederkerigheid aan de natuurlijke omgeving en belemmerende regelgeving. Om deze obstakels te overwinnen passen ze, met wisselend succes, diverse governance strategieën toe. Kennisuitwisseling en samenwerking met andere ondernemers (zelf governance) en beïnvloeding van overheidsregulering voeren hierbij de boventoon. Ook elementen van markt-governance (certificering) en netwerk-governance (convenanten) zijn zichtbaar. Opvallend zijn de hoge verwachtingen die de ondernemers koesteren van aanpassing van overheidsregulering. Deze verwachtingen staan op gespannen voet met de terugtredende overheid die de verantwoordelijkheid voor natuur steeds meer bij de samenleving neerlegt.

This study focused on the potential of seaweed, cultivated in the North Sea, as a sustainable and profitable resource for feed and non-food applications. Seawood production can take place as part of multi-use platforms at sea (MUPS). A review of the state-of-the-art in seaweed production and its applications. Various economic, ecological and social challenges are identified, which need to be addressed to utilise this potential. Dit onderzoek richt zich op het potentieel van zeewier productie in de Noordzee, als een duurzaam uitgangsmateriaal voor productie in diervoeders en andere non-food toepassingen. Zeewier kan geteeld worden in zogenaamde multi-use platforms at sea (MUPS). Het onderzoek geeft een overzicht van kennis over zeewier productie en toepassingen. Resultaten laten zien dat Noordzee zeewier in potentie een duurzaam uitgangsmateriaal is. Diverse economische, ecologische en maatschappelijke uitdagingen zijn geformuleerd. Deze zullen geadresseerd moeten worden voordat het potentieel van zeewier ten volle benut kan worden.

This document deals with monitoring and evaluation aspects in Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) processes. Effective monitoring and evaluation is widely recognised as a fundamental component of maritime spatial management and needs to concentrate on the most important issues potentially affecting a maritime area. For measuring performance of an implemented plan it is important to set clear objectives. Progress and outcomes are then measured through the process of evaluation and monitoring against those objectives.

Anno 2012 bestaan ze in de verbeelding, op papier en als experiment: Multifunctionele platforms op zee of Multi Use Platforms on Sea (MUPS), waarop maritieme activiteiten met elkaar zijn geclusterd. De kern van het concept is om op een locatie op zee meerdere economische activiteiten te combineren en wel zo dat het ecosysteem en de mens er optimaal van kunnen profiteren zonder elkaar wederzijds te belemmeren.

Kringlooplandbouw is een vorm van landbouw waarbij de nadruk ligt op het gebruik van op het bedrijf aanwezige hulpbronnen en voorraden, en het behalen van voldoende inkomen over langere termijn met het behoud van de kwaliteit van natuurlijke ecosystemen. In Nationaal Landschap ‘Noardlike Fryske Wâlden’ (NFW) wordt in de melkveehouderij een vorm van kringlooplandbouw bedreven die zich onder andere kenmerkt door het voeren van de melkkoeien met een structuurrijk en eiwitarm dieet, minder gebruik van kunstmest, het bovengronds uitrijden van dierlijke mest en de focus op een hogere bodembenutting van stikstof (N) uit dierlijke mest. Bij deze vorm van kringlooplandbouw ligt de focus op levering van ecosysteemdiensten door de bodem, vanuit haar diverse functies. Belangrijke ecosysteemdiensten, waarbij door de bodem een aanzienlijke bijdrage wordt geleverd, zijn de voedsel- en biomassaproductie, de grondwaterkwaliteit, de opslag van koolstof en de regulering van nutriënten. De maatschappelijke doorwerking van kringlooplandbouw is in potentie zeer groot, en de belangstelling vanuit de maatschappij voor deze vorm van landbouw neemt toe.

Within the southern North Sea, several EU Member States are developing or have already implemented marine spatial plans for their EEZs. However, marine spatial p lanning (MSP) is usually carried out at the national level and largely ignores the possible mutual benefits of crossborder cooperation. The MASPNOSE project has facilitated two concrete, cross‐border MSP initiatives:  the Thornton Bank area on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands where crossborder coordination could used to address wind energy development, shipping and fisheries management  the Dogger Bank international fisheries management plan developed by the North Sea Regional Advisory Council (NSRAC). Here, cross‐border MSP was used to develop a stakeholder perspective on spatial management measures. The two case studies were in different stages of the cross‐border MSP process. In this paper we focus on the role of knowledge and research in these two planning initiatives. We describe the knowledge requirements that have been articulated (e.g. on ecosystem components, spatial‐temporal patterns, current and future human use, institutional setting) and how these requirements have been addressed through data workshops with stakeholders, analysis of policy documents and interviews. In the Thornton Bank case study the knowledge requirements focused on the institutional and administrative settings and the identification of policy priorities. In the Dogger Bank case study, stakeholder knowledge was combined with research knowledge to assess zoning options for the Dogger Bank area

De mariene systemen en de kustzones worden steeds intensiever gebruikt voor verschillende functies. Hierdoor ontstaan nieuwe 'competing claims' op deze ruimte. Deze variëren van claims van natuur en biodiversiteit (zee-reservaten), vanuit de economie (visreservaten voor de visserij) tot het ontwikkelen van zones voor windmolens, boorplatforms, zandwinning, scheepvaart etc. Dit rapport geeft een beschrijving van een relatief nieuw fenomeen dat in opkomst is: Multifunctionele Platforms op Zee waarop maritieme activiteiten met elkaar zijn geclusterd op zee. Aan de hand van twee case-studies: Maasvlakte 2 en Windmolenpark Q10, wordt geanalyseerd welk beleidsinstrumentarium door verschillende partijen is toegepast in deze cases en welke lessen hieruit geleerd kunnen worden voor de toekomstige ontwikkeling van MUPS. Verder wordt een doorkijk gegeven naar wat de overheid in de nabije toekomst mogelijk zou kunnen gaan doen op het gebied van beleid en beheer voor een ontwikkelingsgerichte benadering van de Noordzee

A detailed radial profile for the 14C concentration in tree stem cellulose, covering growth rings for the years 1962–1964, was obtained for a Sitka spruce of the US Pacific Coast using accelerator mass spectrometry. The tree cellulose 14C closely follows atmospheric 14CO2 concentrations, responding to changes with an apparent delay of 5 to 6 weeks. The delay in response is mostly due to the addition of between 13% and 28% of biospheric CO2 to the canopy-air CO2 used by the tree for stem cellulose. Delayed incorporation and the use of stored photosynthate of the previous fall appear less important.DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0889.1989.tb00131.x
