Inspired by the kinetics of wave phenomena in reaction-diffusion models of biological systems, we propose a novel grid-forming control strategy for control of three-phase DC/AC converters in power systems. The ($\lambda-\omega$) virtual oscillator control or (lambda-omega) VOC is a natural increment on ideas from virtual oscillator dynamics rotating at a fixed nominal frequency to adaptive, angle-based frequency function. We study a network of identical three-phase DC/AC converters interconnected via $\Pi$ transmission lines. For this, we prove almost global asymptotic stability for a reduced (time-scale separated) version of the model, associated to a well-defined set of controller gains and system parameters. Additionally, we link the (\lambda-\omega) VOC to well-studied controllers in the literature, e.g. droop control. Motivated by the penetration of converter-based generation into the electrical grid, we revisit the classical log-linear learning algorithm for optimal allocation {of synchronous machines and converters} for mixed power generation. The objective is to assign to each generator unit a type (either synchronous machine or DC/AC converter in closed-loop with droop control), while minimizing the steady state angle deviation relative to an optimum induced by unknown optimal configuration of synchronous and DC/AC converter-based generation. Additionally, we study the robustness of the learning algorithm against a uniform drop in the line susceptances and with respect to a well-defined feasibility region describing admissible power deviations. We show guaranteed probabilistic convergence to maximizers of the perturbed potential function with feasible power flows and demonstrate our theoretical findings via simulative examples of power network with six generation units., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

This paper concentrates on the collaborative target tracking control of a pair of tracking vehicles with formation constraints. The proposed controller requires only distance measurements between tracking vehicles and the target. Its novelty lies in two aspects: 1) the elliptic coordinates are used to represent an arbitrary tracking formation without singularity, which can be deduced from inter-agent distances, and 2) the regulation of the tracking vehicle system obeys a binocular coordination principle, which simplifies the design of the control law by leveraging rich physical meanings of elliptic coordinates. The tracking system with the proposed controller is proven to be exponentially convergent when the target is stationary. When the target drifts with a small velocity, the desired tracking formation is achieved within a small margin proportional to the magnitude of the target's drift velocity. This paper is concerned with a formation shaping problem for point agents in a two-dimensional space, where control avoids the possibility of reflection ambiguities. One solution for this type of problems was given first for three or four agents by considering a potential function which consists of both the distance error and the signed area terms. Then, by exploiting a hierarchical control strategy with such potential functions, the method was extended to any number of agents recently. However, a specific gain on the signed area term must be employed there, and it does not guarantee the global convergence. To overcome this issue, this paper provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the global convergence, subject to the constraint that the desired formation consists of isosceles triangles only. This clarifies the admissible range of the gain on the signed area for this case. We investigate the stability properties of a multi-converter power system model, defined on a high-order manifold. For this, we identify its symmetry (i.e., rotational invariance) generated by a static angle shift and rotation of AC signals. We characterize the steady state set, primarily determined by the steady state angles and DC power input. Based on eigenvalue conditions of its Jacobian matrix, we show asymptotic stability of the multi-converter system in a neighborhood of the synchronous steady state set by applying the center manifold theory. We guarantee the eigenvalue conditions via an explicit approach. Based on stochastic differential equations (SDEs), we analyse the overall performance of heterogeneous power systems network, subject to spatially distributed and correlated noise with random initial conditions. We determine bounds on the H_2 norm of the heterogeneous system based on a closed-form of the norm of the homogeneous power system. Then, we formulate possible scenarios for performance optimization and link these to applications for network design and control problems in power systems. In this paper, a novel design scheme is introduced to solve the optimal control problem for nonlinear systems with unsymmetrical and state-dependent input constraints. By introducing an initial stabilizing control policy as the baseline of the constructed optimal control policy, we remove the assumption in the current study for the adaptive optimal control, that is, the internal dynamics should hold zero when the state of the system is in the origin. Particularly, nonlinear control systems with partially-unknown dynamics are investigated and the procedure to acquire the corresponding optimal control policy is presented. The stability for the closed-loop dynamics and the optimality of the obtained control policy are both proved. Besides, we apply the proposed control design framework to solve the optimal circumnavigation problem based on the accumulative Fisher information for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The control performance of our algorithm is compared with that of the existing circumnavigation control policy in a numerical simulation.

Efficient and effective learning is one of the ultimate goals of the deep reinforcement learning (DRL), although the compromise has been made in most of the time, especially for the application of robot manipulations. Learning is always expensive for robot manipulation tasks and the learning effectiveness could be affected by the system uncertainty. In order to solve above challenges, in this study, we proposed a simple but powerful reward shaping method, namely Dense2Sparse. It combines the advantage of fast convergence of dense reward and the noise isolation of the sparse reward, to achieve a balance between learning efficiency and effectiveness, which makes it suitable for robot manipulation tasks. We evaluated our Dense2Sparse method with a series of ablation experiments using the state representation model with system uncertainty. The experiment results show that the Dense2Sparse method obtained higher expected reward compared with the ones using standalone dense reward or sparse reward, and it also has a superior tolerance of system uncertainty.

This work considers the distributed computation of the one-to-one vertex correspondences between two undirected and connected graphs, which is called \textit{graph matching}, over multi-agent networks. Given two \textit{isomorphic} and \textit{asymmetric} graphs, there is a unique permutation matrix that maps the vertices in one graph to the vertices in the other. Based on a convex relaxation of graph matching in Aflalo et al. (2015), we propose a distributed computation of graph matching as a distributed convex optimization problem subject to equality constraints and a global set constraint, using a network of multiple agents whose interaction graph is connected. Each agent in the network only knows one column of each of the adjacency matrices of the two graphs, and all agents collaboratively learn the graph matching by exchanging information with their neighbors. The proposed algorithm employs a projected primal-dual gradient method to handle equality constraints and a set constraint. Under the proposed algorithm, the agents' estimates of the permutation matrix converge to the optimal permutation globally and exponentially fast. This paper presents a class of event-triggering rules for dynamical control systems with guaranteed positive minimum inter-event time (MIET). We first propose an event-based function design with guaranteed control performance under a clock-like variable for general nonlinear systems, and later specify them to general linear systems. Compared to the existing static and dynamic triggering mechanisms, the proposed triggering rules hold the robust global event-separation property, and can be easily implemented on practical digital platform. Namely, it is shown that the minimum inter-event time can be flexibly adapted to the various hardware limitations. In this paper, we develop a hybrid distance-angle rigidity theory that involves heterogeneous distances (or unsigned angles) and signed constraints for a framework in the 2-D and 3-D space. The new rigidity theory determines a (locally) unique formation shape up to a translation and a rotation by a set of distance and signed constraints, or up to a translation, a rotation and additionally a scaling factor by a set of unsigned angle and signed constraints. Under this new rigidity theory, we have a clue to resolve the flip (or reflection) and flex ambiguity for a target formation with hybrid distance-angle constraints. In particular, we can completely eliminate the ambiguity issues if formations are under a specific construction which is called \myemph{signed Henneberg construction} in this paper. We then apply the rigidity theory to formation shape control and develop a gradient-based control system that guarantees an exponential convergence close to a desired formation by inter-neighbor measurements. Several numerical simulations on formation shape control with hybrid distance-angle constraints are provided to validate the theoretical results.

We investigate local convergence of identical DC/AC converters interconnected via identical resistive and inductive lines towards a synchronous equilibrium manifold. We exploit the symmetry of the resulting vector field and develop a Lyapunov-based framework, in which we measure the distance of the solutions of the nonlinear power system model to the equilibrium manifold by analyzing the evolution of their tangent vectors. We derive sufficient and fully decentralized conditions to characterize the equilibria of interest, and provide an estimate of their region of contraction. We provide ways to satisfy these conditions and illustrate our results based on numerical simulations of a two-converter benchmark., Comment: 6 pages

We study the problem of distance-based formation shape control for autonomous agents with double-integrator dynamics. Our considerations are focused on exponential stability properties. For second-order formation systems under the standard gradient-based control law, we prove local exponential stability with respect to the total energy by applying Chetaev's trick to the Lyapunov candidate function. We also propose a novel formation control law, which does not require measurements of relative positions but instead measurements of distances. The distance-only control law is based on an approximation of symmetric products of vector fields by sinusoidal perturbations. A suitable averaging analysis reveals that the averaged system coincides with the multi-agent system under the standard gradient-based control law. This allows us to prove practical exponential stability for the system under the distance-only control law.

This paper addresses forward motion control for trajectory tracking and mobile formation coordination for a group of non-holonomic vehicles on SE(2). Firstly, by constructing an intermediate attitude variable which involves vehicles' position information and desired attitude, the translational and rotational control inputs are designed in two stages to solve the trajectory tracking problem. Secondly, the coordination relationships of relative positions and headings are explored thoroughly for a group of non-holonomic vehicles to maintain a mobile formation with rigid body motion constraints. We prove that, except for the cases of parallel formation and translational straight line formation, a mobile formation with strict rigid-body motion can be achieved if and only if the ratios of linear speed to angular speed for each individual vehicle are constants. Motion properties for mobile formation with weak rigid-body motion are also demonstrated. Thereafter, based on the proposed trajectory tracking approach, a distributed mobile formation control law is designed under a directed tree graph. The performance of the proposed controllers is validated by both numerical simulations and experiments.

This paper discusses cooperative stabilization control of rigid formations via an event-based approach. We first design a centralized event-based formation control system, in which a central event controller determines the next triggering time and broadcasts the event signal to all the agents for control input update. We then build on this approach to propose a distributed event control strategy, in which each agent can use its local event trigger and local information to update the control input at its own event time. For both cases, the triggering condition, event function and triggering behavior are discussed in detail, and the exponential convergence of the event-based formation system is guaranteed.

Controlled invariant set and viability regulation of dynamical control systems have played important roles in many control and coordination applications. In this paper we develop a temporal viability regulation theory for general dynamical control systems, and in particular for control affine systems. The time-varying viable set is parameterized by time-varying constraint functions, with the aim to regulate a dynamical control system to be invariant in the time-varying viable set so that temporal state-dependent constraints are enforced. We consider both time-varying equality and inequality constraints in defining a temporal viable set. We also present sufficient conditions for the existence of feasible control input for the control affine systems. This paper considers a collaborative tracking control problem using a group of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with constant and non-identical speeds. The dynamics of fixed-wing UAVs are modelled by unicycle-type equations with nonholonomic constraints, assuming that UAVs fly at constant altitudes in the nominal operation mode. The controller is designed such that all fixed-wing UAVs as a group can collaboratively track a desired target's position and velocity. We first present conditions on the relative speeds of tracking UAVs and the target to ensure that the tracking objective can be achieved when UAVs are subject to constant speed constraints. We construct a reference velocity that includes both the target's velocity and position as feedback, which is to be tracked by the group centroid. In this way, all vehicles' headings are controlled such that the group centroid follows a reference trajectory that successfully tracks the target's trajectory. A spacing controller is further devised to ensure that all vehicles stay close to the group centroid trajectory. Trade-offs in the controller design and performance limitations of the target tracking control due to the constant-speed constraint are also discussed in detail. We consider the problem of feasible coordination control for multiple homogeneous or heterogeneous mobile vehicles subject to various constraints (nonholonomic motion constraints, holonomic coordination constraints, equality/inequality constraints etc). We develop a general framework involving differential-algebraic equations and viability theory to describe and determine coordination feasibility for a coordinated motion control under heterogeneous vehicle dynamics and different types of coordination constraints. If a solution exists for the derived differential-algebraic equations and/or inequalities, a heuristic algorithm is proposed for generating feasible trajectories for each individual vehicle. In case studies on coordinating two vehicles, we derive analytical solutions to motion generation for two-vehicle groups consisting of car-like vehicles, unicycle vehicles, or vehicles with constant speeds, which serve as benchmark coordination tasks for more complex vehicle groups. We show several simulation experiments on multi-vehicle coordination under various constraints to validate the theory and the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

This paper investigates the stability of distance-based \textit{flexible} undirected formations in the plane. Without rigidity, there exists a set of connected shapes for given distance constraints, which is called the ambit. We show that a flexible formation can lose its flexibility, or equivalently may reduce the degrees of freedom of its ambit, if a small disturbance is introduced in the range sensor of the agents. The stability of the disturbed equilibrium can be characterized by analyzing the eigenvalues of the linearized augmented error system. Unlike infinitesimally rigid formations, the disturbed desired equilibrium can be turned unstable regardless of how small the disturbance is. We finally present two examples of how to exploit these disturbances as design parameters. The first example shows how to combine rigid and flexible formations such that some of the agents can move freely in the desired and locally stable ambit. In this paper, we discuss quantization effects in rigid formation control systems when target formations are described by inter-agent distances. Because of practical sensing and measurement constraints, we consider in this paper distance measurements in their quantized forms. We show that under gradient-based formation control, in the case of uniform quantization, the distance errors converge locally to a bounded set whose size depends on the quantization error, while in the case of logarithmic quantization, all distance errors converge locally to zero. A special quantizer involving the signum function is then considered with which all agents can only measure coarse distances in terms of binary information. In this case, the formation converges locally to a target formation within a finite time. This paper considers a formation shape control problem for point agents in a two-dimensional ambient space, where the control is distributed, is based on achieving desired distances between nominated agent pairs, and avoids the possibility of reflection ambiguities. This has potential applications for large-scale multi-agent systems having simple information exchange structure. One solution to this type of problem, applicable to formations with just three or four agents, was recently given by considering a potential function which consists of both distance error and signed triangle area terms. However, it seems to be challenging to apply it to formations with more than four agents. This paper shows a hierarchical control strategy which can be applicable to any number of agents based on the above type of potential function and a formation shaping incorporating a grouping of equilateral triangles, so that all controlled distances are in fact the same.
