Abstract

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the ability of colonies of the eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma Americanum (Lepidoptera:Lasiocampidae), to abandon long-lived pheromone trails to depleted feeding sites and to follow the most direct and shortest of pathways between their tent and new food-finds. For the first of these studies, the caterpillars in all but one of fourteen colonies quickly abandoned well established trails to sites depleted of leaves after discovering and feeding at unexploited patches elsewhere. Interval-sampling of video frames of caterpillars moving over three-choice mazes between their tent and feeding sites in the second study showed that the caterpillars strongly favored trials that directly connected their tents and feeding sites, largely abandoning spur trails laid down during the exploratory phase of the contemporary foray. In the third study, all of the caterpillars in sixteen of seventeen colonies selected the shorter of two pathways between their tent and a feeding site on their first return trip to the new food-find or after one or more additional forays. Together, these studies indicate that the caterpillar's bi-level, trail-based foraging system enables colonies to efficiently navigate the expansive three-dimensional complex of long-persistent trails that lie between their communal tent and distant food-finds. In criminology, various theories are used to develop interpretations; many come from sociology. One of them corresponds to the model of Concentric Circles, proposed by Ernest Burgess in 1925; forming part of the ecological approaches coming from the Chicago School. It sought to explain the social divisions of the space around the city center and although it received harsh criticism, it must be recognized that there are very valuable elements in the model, which are rescued with this research. The objective is to describe the situation on the border strip between Brazil and Venezuela, specifically in the Pacaraima municipality; which is assumed to be Zone Number 2 of the Burgess model, also called Transition Zone. Locating it in the place where the arrival of Venezuelan migrants occurs; that is, on Brazil's federal highway BR174, starting at the border - commonly called "The Line" - to the height of the La Casa Blanca inn hotel. In this area and its surroundings, there are people living in tents on public roads; some in United Nations shelters and others joining Brazilian criminal groups such as the "Primeiro Comando da Capital" (PCC) and the "Comando Vermelho" (CV). Abstract

Mycelium-based materials have seen a surge in popularity in the manufacturing industry in recent years. This study aims to build a lab-scale experimental facility to investigate mycelium growth under a well-controlled temperature and humidity environment and explore how substrates of very different chemical and mechanical properties can affect the microscopic morphology of the mycelium fibers during growth. Here, we design and build a customized green tent with good thermal and humidity insulation for controlling the temperature and humidity and monitor the environmental data with an Arduino chip. We develop our procedure to grow mycelium from spores to fibrous networks. It is shown that a hydrogel substrate with soluble nutrition is more favorite for mycelium growth than a hardwood board and leads to higher growing speed. We take many microscopic images of the mycelium fibers on the hardwood board and the hydrogel substrate and found no significant difference in diameter (∼3 μm). This research provides a foundation to explore the mechanism of mycelium growth and explore the environmentally friendly and time-efficient method of its growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since the early period of humanity, "shelter" has been one of the basic needs of humans. "Tent", one of the forms of shelter, whose functions change over time according to the societies. "Tent", which positions itself in mythical perception and cultural codes as well as its functions in the daily life of the Turks, has been used in many literary works in different ways and meanings. In this study, text scanning and text-centered folklore functionality methods were used. It was tried to determine in what ways and meanings the word "tent" was used and what functions it had in the language works of historical Turkish dialects from the 8th to the 18th centuries. With the data obtained, it was aimed to understand the Turks' perception of tents in the cultural memory of urban and rural individuals and, accordingly, the naturalness or artificiality of their relationship with nature, and to analyze their social and cultural codes in the context of folklore, based on the meanings of the word "tent". Abstract

Homelessness remains a significant public health issue across the United States, particularly in urban areas. Individuals become and remain homeless for multifaceted and complex reasons that are linked to well-being. The aim of this study was to understand the well-being of persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) and living in tent camps using Aaron Antonovsky’s salutogenic model of health (SMH). To address well-being, we conducted a basic qualitative study with thirty adults over age 18 who self-identified as homeless and living in tent camps within the city of Minneapolis. With a semi-structured interview guide that centered on the SMH, we analyzed data using Johnny Saldaña’s qualitative coding method. Sources of stress themes, including (1) “family trauma” (depression/trauma related to the death of a loved one and drugs, imprisonment, and abuse), (2) “mental health” (depression/trauma related to the death of a loved one, loneliness living in tent camps, substance use, mental illness), and (3) “change and threats” (constant fear of aggression, lack of stability of the tent camp, bad people causing problems, cliques in the camp). Themes of general resistance (GRRs) resources (coping with stress), or GRRs emerged, including (1) “systems knowledge,” (2) “coping strategies,” (3) “sense of community,” (4) “camp stability,” and (5) “human dignity” emerged during data collection and analysis. These findings can inform policy decisions related to increasing services to exit homelessness, funding for sustainable tent camps, and sweeps of tent camps in the city of Minneapolis and beyond.
