Abstract

Background & Aims: We aimed to clarify the features of resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) after failure of multiple interferon (IFN)-free regimens in HCV genotype 1b infections. Methods: A total of 1,193 patients with HCV for whom direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment had failed were enrolled from 67 institutions in Japan. The RASs in non-structural protein (NS)3, NS5A, and NS5B were determined by population sequencing. Results: Failure of 1, 2, and 3 regimens was observed in 1,101; 80; and 12 patients, respectively. Among patients with failure of 1 regimen, Y56H and D168V in NS3 were more frequently detected after failure of paritaprevir, whereas D168E was more frequently detected after failure of regimens including asunaprevir. R30H and L31-RAS in NS5A were frequently detected after failure of regimens including daclatasvir. The prevalence of Y93-RAS was high irrespective of the regimen. Abstract

We show that the effective potentials for the Polyakov loops in finite temperature SU$(N)$ gauge theories obey a certain scaling relation with respect to temperature in the large-$N$ limit. This scaling relation strongly constrains the possible terms in the Polyakov loop effective potentials. Moreover, by using the effective potentials in the presence of imaginary chemical potentials or imaginary angular velocities in several models, we find that phase transitions to $Z_m$-type deconfinement phases ($Z_m$ phase) occur, where the eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop are distributed $Z_m$ symmetrically. Physical quantities in the $Z_m$ phase obey the scaling properties of the effective potential. The models include Yang-Mills (YM) theories, the bosonic BFSS matrix model and ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric YM theory on $S^3$. Thus, the phase diagrams of large-$N$ gauge theories with imaginary chemical potentials are very rich and the stable $Z_m$ phase would be ubiquitous. Monte-Carlo calculations also support this. Abstract

Abstract In recent years the complex Langevin method (CLM) has proven a powerful method in studying statistical systems which suffer from the sign problem. Here we show that it can also be applied to an important problem concerning why we live in four-dimensional spacetime. Our target system is the type IIB matrix model, which is conjectured to be a nonperturbative definition of type IIB superstring theory in ten dimensions. The fermion determinant of the model becomes complex upon Euclideanization, which causes a severe sign problem in its Monte Carlo studies. It is speculated that the phase of the fermion determinant actually induces the spontaneous breaking of the SO(10) rotational symmetry, which has direct consequences on the aforementioned question. In this paper, we apply the CLM to the 6D version of the type IIB matrix model and show clear evidence that the SO(6) symmetry is broken down to SO(3). Our results are consistent with those obtained previously by the Gaussian expansion method.

Abstract In this paper, we study the finite-temperature matrix quantum mechanics with chemical potential term linear in the single trace of U(N) matrices, via Monte Carlo simulation. In the bosonic case, we exhibit the existence of the Gross-Witten-Wadia (GWW) type third-order phase transition. We also extend our studies to the model with the fermionic degrees of freedom employing the non-lattice simulation via Fourier expansion, and explore the possibilities that there is a phase transition between the gapped and ungapped phase both in the absence and presence of the chemical potential term. We make a comparison of the phase diagram between the bosonic and fermionic cases.

Abstract

When using the propensity score method to estimate the treatment effects, it is important to select the covariates to be included in the propensity score model. The inclusion of covariates unrelated to the outcome in the propensity score model led to bias and large variance in the estimator of treatment effects. Many data-driven covariate selection methods have been proposed for selecting covariates related to outcomes. However, most of them assume an average treatment effect estimation and may not be designed to estimate quantile treatment effects (QTE), which is the effect of treatment on the quantiles of outcome distribution. In QTE estimation, we consider two relation types with the outcome as the expected value and quantile point. To achieve this, we propose a data-driven covariate selection method for propensity score models that allows for the selection of covariates related to the expected value and quantile of the outcome for QTE estimation. Assuming the quantile regression model as an outcome regression model, covariate selection was performed using a regularization method with the partial regression coefficients of the quantile regression model as weights. The proposed method was applied to artificial data and a dataset of mothers and children born in King County, Washington, to compare the performance of existing methods and QTE estimators. Abstract

Causality is fundamental in human cognition and has drawn attention in diverse research fields. With growing volumes of textual data, discerning causalities within text data is crucial, and causal text mining plays a pivotal role in extracting meaningful patterns. This study conducts comprehensive evaluations of ChatGPT's causal text mining capabilities. Firstly, we introduce a benchmark that extends beyond general English datasets, including domain-specific and non-English datasets. We also provide an evaluation framework to ensure fair comparisons between ChatGPT and previous approaches. Finally, our analysis outlines the limitations and future challenges in employing ChatGPT for causal text mining. Specifically, our analysis reveals that ChatGPT serves as a good starting point for various datasets. However, when equipped with a sufficient amount of training data, previous models still surpass ChatGPT's performance. Additionally, ChatGPT suffers from the tendency to falsely recognize non-causal sequences as causal sequences. These issues become even more pronounced with advanced versions of the model, such as GPT-4. In addition, we highlight the constraints of ChatGPT in handling complex causality types, including both intra/inter-sentential and implicit causality. The model also faces challenges with effectively leveraging in-context learning and domain adaptation. We release our code to support further research and development in this field.

Abstract

We extend a certain type of identities on sums of $I$-Bessel functions on lattices, previously given by G. Chinta, J. Jorgenson, A. Karlsson and M. Neuhauser. Moreover we prove that, with continuum limit, the transformation formulas of theta functions such as the Dedekind eta function can be given by $I$-Bessel lattice sum identities with characters. We consider analogues of theta functions of lattices coming from linear codes and show that sums of $I$-Bessel functions defined by linear codes can be expressed by complete weight enumerators. We also prove that $I$-Bessel lattice sums appear as solutions of heat equations on general lattices. As a further application, we obtain an explicit solution of the heat equation on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ whose initial condition is given by a linear code.

Abstract

This paper presents an optimal construction of $N$-bit-delay almost instantaneous fixed-to-variable-length (AIFV) codes, the general form of binary codes we can make when finite bits of decoding delay are allowed. The presented method enables us to optimize lossless codes among a broader class of codes compared to the conventional FV and AIFV codes. The paper first discusses the problem of code construction, which contains some essential partial problems, and defines three classes of optimality to clarify how far we can solve the problems. The properties of the optimal codes are analyzed theoretically, showing the sufficient conditions for achieving the optimum. Then, we propose an algorithm for constructing $N$-bit-delay AIFV codes for given stationary memory-less sources. The optimality of the constructed codes is discussed both theoretically and empirically. They showed shorter expected code lengths when $N\ge 3$ than the conventional AIFV-$m$ and extended Huffman codes. Moreover, in the random numbers simulation, they performed higher compression efficiency than the 32-bit-precision range codes under reasonable conditions., Comment: submitted to IEEE Trans.
