Abstract

This contribution explores modern and traditional approaches to the decipherment of ancient writing systems. It surveys methods used by paleographers and epigraphers and state-of-the art applications of computational linguistics, such as models based on neural networks. It frames the contextual problems scholars encounter in dealing with ancient codes, the situations and preconditions of the unknown codes, their idiosyncrasies and peculiarities, and the potential solutions afforded by both traditional and novel methods of investigation.

54. Constraining the Generalized Uncertainty Principle with the light twisted by rotating black holes and M87

Abstract

We test the validity of the Generalized Heisenberg's Uncertainty principle in the presence of strong gravitational fields nearby rotating black holes; Heisenberg's principle is supposed to require additional correction terms when gravity is taken into account, leading to a more general formulation also known as the Generalized Uncertainty Principle. Using as probes electromagnetic waves acquiring orbital angular momentum when lensed by a rotating black hole, we find from numerical simulations a relationship between the spectrum of the orbital angular momentum of light and the corrections needed to formulate the Generalized Uncertainty Principle, here characterized by the rescaled parameter beta(0), a function of the Planck's mass and the bare mass of the black hole. Then, from the analysis of the observed twisted light due to the gravitational field of the compact object observed in M87, we find new limits for the parameter beta(0). With this method, complementary to black hole shadow circularity analyses, we obtain more precise limits from the experimental data of M87*, confirming the validity of scenarios compatible with General Relativity, within the uncertainties due to the experimental errors present in EHT data and those due to the numerical simulations and analysis.

These patterns for Italian are strongly rooted in Conversation Analysis and are adaptable and portable into different domains. The platform used for the implementation is Dialogflow CX.

Abstract

This paper presents work in progress for the creation of a Large Vocabulary Automatic Speech Recogniser for Italian using NVIDIA NeMo. Thanks to this package, we were able to build a reliable recogniser for adults' speech by fine tuning the English model provided by NVIDIA and rescoring it with powerful neural language models, obtaining very good performances. The lack of a standard, reliable and publicy available baseline for Italian motivated this work.

Abstract

A timely diagnosis of the prodromal stages of dementia remains a big challenge for healthcare systems: many assessment tools have been proposed over recent years, but the commonest screening instruments are largely unreliable for detecting subtle changes in cognition. The scientific literature contains a rising number of reports about language disturbances at the earliest stages of dementia, a clinical syndrome known as “Mild Cognitive Impairment" (MCI). Here we take advantage of these findings to develop a novel NLP method capable of identifying cognitive frailty at a very early stage by processing Italian spoken productions. This study constitutes a first step in the creation of an automatic tool for non-intrusive, low-cost dementia screening exploiting linguistic biomarkers. Our findings show that acoustic features (i.e., fluency indexes and spectral properties of the voice) are the most reliable parameters for MCI early identification. Moreover, lexical and syntactic features, grabbing the erosion of verbal abilities caused by the pathology, emerge as statistically significant and can support speech traits in the classification process.

Abstract

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:\ud We estimated the cost consequence of Italian National Health System (NHS) investment in direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy according to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment access policies in Italy.\ud \ud METHODS:\ud A multistate, 20-year time horizon Markov model of HCV liver disease progression was developed. Fibrosis stage, age and genotype distributions were derived from the Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies (PITER) cohort. The treatment efficacy, disease progression probabilities and direct costs in each health state were obtained from the literature. The break-even point in time (BPT) was defined as the period of time required for the cumulative costs saved to recover the Italian NHS investment in DAA treatment. Three different PITER enrolment periods, which covered the full DAA access evolution in Italy, were considered.\ud \ud RESULTS:\ud The disease stages of 2657 patients who consecutively underwent DAA therapy from January 2015 to December 2017 at 30 PITER clinical centres were standardized for 1000 patients. The investment in DAAs was considered to equal €25 million, €15 million, and €9 million in 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively. For patients treated in 2015, the BPT was not achieved, because of the disease severity of the treated patients and high DAA prices. For 2016 and 2017, the estimated BPTs were 6.6 and 6.2 years, respectively. The total cost savings after 20 years were €50.13 and €55.50 million for 1000 patients treated in 2016 and 2017, respectively.\ud \ud CONCLUSIONS:\ud This study may be a useful tool for public decision makers to understand how HCV clinical and epidemiological profiles influence the economic burden of HCV.

Abstract

Objective: We estimated the cost consequence of Italian National Health System (NHS) investment in direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy according to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment access policies in Italy. Methods: A multistate, 20-year time horizon Markov model of HCV liver disease progression was developed. Fibrosis stage, age and genotype distributions were derived from the Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies (PITER) cohort. The treatment efficacy, disease progression probabilities and direct costs in each health state were obtained from the literature. The break-even point in time (BPT) was defined as the period of time required for the cumulative costs saved to recover the Italian NHS investment in DAA treatment. Three different PITER enrolment periods, which covered the full DAA access evolution in Italy, were considered. Results: The disease stages of 2657 patients who consecutively underwent DAA therapy from January 2015 to December 2017 at 30 PITER clinical centres were standardized for 1000 patients. The investment in DAAs was considered to equal €25 million, €15 million, and €9 million in 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively. For patients treated in 2015, the BPT was not achieved, because of the disease severity of the treated patients and high DAA prices. For 2016 and 2017, the estimated BPTs were 6.6 and 6.2 years, respectively. The total cost savings after 20 years were €50.13 and €55.50 million for 1000 patients treated in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Conclusions: This study may be a useful tool for public decision makers to understand how HCV clinical and epidemiological profiles influence the economic burden of HCV.

69. Twisted light, a new tool for general relativity and beyond - Revealing the properties of rotating black holes with the vorticity of light

Abstract

We describe and present the first observational evidence that light propagating near a rotating black hole is twisted in phase and carries orbital angular momentum. The novel use of this physical observable as an additional tool for the previously known techniques of gravitational lensing allows us to directly measure, for the first time, the spin parameter of a black hole. With the additional information encoded in the orbital angular momentum, not only can we reveal the actual rotation of the compact object, but we can also use rotating black holes as probes to test general relativity.

Abstract

Soil phosphorus (P) remains an ever-increasing topic of importance, notably for its key role as a nutrient for driving food production but with parallel concerns over damaging water quality, all against a backdrop of uncertainty of long-term rock phosphate supplies. Soil is a key interface that holds P and regulates its onward flow to plants or leakage to waters. Often overlooked are a ubiquitous group of P compounds that exist in alternative oxidation states to that of phosphate (+5). Redox cycling, and the behaviour that chemically reduced P compounds exhibit in soils, introduces alternative routes of cycling P that may become more important as the soil system itself alters, especially due to the external pressures of climate change, bringing about critical dynamics in rainfall and runoff and also wetting and drying. All of these factors are known to affect soil redox potential and consequently the oxidation state of soil P. This review considers the chemically reduced species in the P cycle, exploring their sources and sinks, while considering their importance within the primary global biogeochemical cycling of P and how this may be impacted by climate change in the temperate climate of the northern hemisphere. Highlights: This paper addresses how climate change will affect soil phosphorus cycling. This review is novel as it considers the reduced phosphorus forms when discussing P transfer in soils. Climate change is likely to increase prevalence of reduced P and free phosphate in northern hemisphere temperate soils. Phosphorus cycling relies partly on redox P processes. Their importance will increase as climate alters soils.

Abstract

Text summarization has gained a considerable amount of research interest due to deep learning based techniques. We lever- age recent results in transfer learning for Natural Language Processing (NLP) using pre-trained deep contextualized word embeddings in a sequence-to-sequence architecture based on pointer-generator networks. We evaluate our approach on the two largest summarization datasets: CNN/Daily Mail and the recent Newsroom dataset. We show how using pre-trained contextualized embeddings on Newsroom improves significantly the state-of-the-art ROUGE-1 measure and obtains comparable scores on the other ROUGE values.

Abstract

We study how language use differs between dialogue partners in a visually grounded reference task when a referent is mutually identifiable by both interlocutors vs. when it is only available to one of them. In the latter case, the addressee needs to disconfirm a proposed description – a skill largely neglected by both the theoretical and the computational linguistics communities. We consider a number of linguistic features that we expect to vary across conditions. We then analyze their effectiveness in distinguishing among the two conditions by means of statistical tests and a feature-based classifier. Overall, we show that language mirrors different grounding conditions, paving the way to future deeper investigation of referential disconfirmation.

Abstract

We discuss, in the relativistic limits, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle for the electromagnetic orbital angular momentum (OAM) of monochromatic fields. The Landau and Peierls relativistic approach applied to the Heisenberg indetermination between the azimuthal angle Delta phi and the OAM state Delta l, when a limit speed is present, exposes the conceptual limits of a possible formulation of the uncertainty principle for OAM states as it leads to the Ehrenfest's paradox of the rotation of a rigid disk in special relativity (SR). To face this problem, in a way similar to Einstein's discussion of a rotating rigid disk, one has to adopt a general relativistic approach and include the limits from smallest and largest scales present in nature, such as the Planck scale and the Hubble horizon.

Abstract

Due to the spread of social media-based applications and the challenges posed by the treatment of social media texts in NLP tools, tailored approaches and ad hoc resources are required to provide the proper coverage of specific linguistic phenomena. Various attempts to produce this kind of specialized resources and tools are described in literature. However, most of these attempts mainly focus on PoS-tagged corpora and only a few of them deal with syntactic annotation. This is particularly true for the Italian language, for which such a resource is currently missing. We thus propose the development of PoSTWITA-UD, a collection of tweets annotated according to a well-known dependency-based annotation format: the Universal Dependencies. The goal of this work is manifold, and it mainly consists in creating a resource that, especially for Italian, can be exploited for the training of NLP systems so as to enhance their performance on social media texts. In this paper we focus on the current state of the resource.

Abstract

This paper presents a new approach for building Language Models using the Quantum Probability Theory, a Quantum Language Model (QLM). It mainly shows that relying on this probability calculus it is possible to build stochastic models able to benefit from quantum correlations due to interference and entanglement. We extensively tested our approach showing its superior performances, both in terms of model perplexity and inserting it into an automatic speech recognition evaluation setting, when compared with state-of-the-art language modelling techniques.

Abstract

Social media texts have been widely used in recent years for various tasks related to sentiment analysis and opinion mining; nevertheless, they still feature a wide range of linguistic phenomena that have proved to be particularly challenging for automatic processing, especially for syntactic parsing. In this paper, we describe a recently started project for the development of PoSTWITA-UD, a novel Italian Twitter treebank in Universal Dependencies. In particular, the paper focuses on its development steps, and on the challenges such work entails, both for automatic systems and human annotators, by discussing the errors produced, by parsers in particular, and the guidelines we adopted for manual revision of annotated tweets. Such guidelines aim to bring to the reader’s attention the most critical cases (in themselves, but also in a UD perspective) encountered so far and stemming from the specific characteristics of the texts we are dealing with.

86. A method to analyse the isotopic composition of oxygen associated with organic phosphorus in soil and plant material

Abstract

The isotopic composition of oxygen bound to phosphorus (P) in phosphate (δ18O-P) has been used to improve our understanding of P cycling in the soil–plant system. The determination of δ18O-P in the inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) soil P pools obtained from soil sequential extractions would further our knowledge. Although methods exist for the purification of inorganic soil P pools, there is no published method for organic P at present. Without this information, it is impossible to determine the signature of the inorganic P released by enzyme hydrolysis. In this paper, we present a protocol for the separation and purification of the organic and inorganic P extracted by NaOH-EDTA in sequential extraction. The procedure was tested on different reference compounds as well as soil and plant materials from temperate and tropical climates. We assessed the efficiency of separation between inorganic and organic P, and of the ultraviolet (UV) hydrolysis of organic P, and the effect of possible interfering compounds. Overall, the protocol enables 30–80% of organic P extracted by NaOH-EDTA to be purified. The measured δ18O-P of organic P ranged from 12.7 to 20.3‰ in soils and from 17 to 27‰ in plants. Although the method provides the signature of a fraction only of soil bulk organic P, it represents the best approach to assess the contribution of enzyme hydrolysis to the inorganic P pools, and it completes the set of purification schemes required to characterize δ18O-P in soil inorganic and organic P. Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the relation between negated adjectives and antonyms in English using Distributional Semantics methods. Results show that, on the basis of contexts of use, a negated adjective (e.g., not cold) is typically more similar to the adjective itself (cold) than to its antonym (hot); such effect is less strong for antonyms derived by affixation (e.g., happy - unhappy).

Abstract

A better use of the increasing functional capabilities of home automation systems and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to support the needs of users with disability, is the subject of a research project currently conducted by Area Ausili (Assistive Technology Area), a department of Polo Tecnologico Regionale Corte Roncati of the Local Health Trust of Bologna (Italy), in collaboration with AIAS Ausilioteca Assistive Technology (AT) Team. The main aim of the project is to develop experimental low cost systems for environmental control through simplified and accessible user interfaces. Many of the activities are focused on automatic speech recognition and are developed in the framework of the CloudCAST project. In this paper we report on the first technical achievements of the project and discuss future possible developments and applications within and outside CloudCAST.

Abstract

Regularities in position and level of prosodic prominences associated to patterns of Information Structure are identified for some Italian varieties. The experiments' results suggest a possibly new structural hypothesis on the role and function of the main prominence in marking information patterns. (1) An abstract and merely structural, “topologic” concept of Prominence location can be conceived of, as endowed with the function of demarcation between units, before their culmination and “description”. This may suffice to explain much of the process by which speakers interpret the IS of utterances in discourse. Further features, such as the specific intonational contours of the different IS units, may thus represent a certain amount of redundancy. (2) Real utterances do not always signal the distribution of Topic and Focus clearly. Acoustically, many remain underspecified in this respect. This is especially true for the distinction between Topic-Focus and Broad Focus, which indeed often has no serious effects on the progression of communicative dynamism in the subsequent discourse. (3) The consistency of such results with the law of least effort, and the very high percent of matching between perceptual evaluations and automatic measurement, seem to validate the used algorithm.

Abstract

Background: The dynamics of phosphorus (P) in the environment is important for regulating nutrient cycles in natural and managed ecosystems and an integral part in assessing biological resilience against environmental change. Organic P (Po) compounds play key roles in biological and ecosystems function in the terrestrial environment being critical to cell function, growth and reproduction. Scope: We asked a group of experts to consider the global issues associated with Po in the terrestrial environment, methodological strengths and weaknesses, benefits to be gained from understanding the Po cycle, and to set priorities for Po research. Conclusions: We identified seven key opportunities for Po research including: the need for integrated, quality controlled and functionally based methodologies; assessment of stoichiometry with other elements in organic matter; understanding the dynamics of Po in natural and managed systems; the role of microorganisms in controlling Po cycles; the implications of nanoparticles in the environment and the need for better modelling and communication of the research. Each priority is discussed and a statement of intent for the Po research community is made that highlights there are key contributions to be made toward understanding biogeochemical cycles, dynamics and function of natural ecosystems and the management of agricultural systems.

Abstract

In the last years, advances in diagnosis and new treatments of cancer patient have increased the life expectancy of children, adolescent and women with cancer. Unfortunately, the ovaries are very sensitive to chemio-radiotharapy that may induce the loss of ovarian function and fertility with consequent Premature Ovarian Failure. The different cryopreservation options available for fertility preservation in cancer patients are embryo cryopreservation, oocyte cryopreservation and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. The choice depends on different parameters: the type and timing of cancer treatment, the type of disease, the patient’s age. The advances in reproductive technology have made fertility preservation a real possibility for patients whether they are girls or young women whose gonadal function is threatened by natural premature menopause, or by cancer therapy or surgical sterilisation.
